"Built on a series of caves under Nottingham Castle, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is the oldest inn in England, and allegedly served some famous historical clientele. According to legend, the pub was used as a refreshment stop for crusaders heading to Jerusalem in the 12th century. Some accounts even have knights, under the direction of King Richard the Lionheart, casually stopping by the pub for ale before heading out to fight the saracens, and whoever else got in their path. Situated at the base of the cliffs beneath Nottingham Castle, the pub began as a brewhouse in the 12th century to provide a sterile beverage for the people of Nottingham. Since that time, the pub has remained in the same place, tucked into the rock wall in front of the castle. Although the current building does not date back to the 12th century, the location is the same as the castle brewhouse. The Museum of Nottingham Life is within Brewhouse buildings adjacent to the “Trip” In the 12th century, the rock caves below the castle were the perfect environment for brewing, and the remnants of this original brewhouse can still be seen in the series of cellars and underground passages below the current pub. Evidence of its medieval use has also been found, including a speaking tube running from the castle to the brewhouse, where orders for ale could be placed. Although you can’t place your order by cave tube anymore, the pub remains a fixture of history and a major point of pride in Nottingham to this day." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
The oldest pub in England and by far one of the most interesting buildings out there! Steeped in history from 1189 and now owned by Greene King, this pub still retains an independent feel to it & has a decent selection of real ales on the bar. We only had a cheese toasty light bite for lunch but it was an ample size and was delicious. Being built into a rock face does make it quite dark inside and the lighting is fairly dim, but this is what gives it the authentic ‘olde worlde’ feel about the place. Definitely well worth a visit when you’re in Nottingham!

Google
Authentic feel of the cave however nice crowd, cheerful people. Lovely ambience. Nice menu fresh fries and sharer wings are too big to share 😊

Google
This is a gem, and a pub to put on your map of pub crawls and ale trails alike if you haven't already; great selection of beer (for a green king especially), nice menu, interior that gives a good ol' tavern feel to it, and as a bit of a unique element, a game of horn 🐮 (you can find out more inside...). 5 stars, this place was great.

Visiting the Old Trip to Jerusalem feels like stepping into a living history book. The blend of ancient rock walls and warm, inviting atmosphere creates a truly unique vibe. I particularly enjoyed the cozy nooks perfect for a quiet pint. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, making recommendations that enhanced my experience. Don’t miss the chance to explore the hidden corners of this gem—there’s a story in every shadow. A must-visit for anyone looking to soak in Nottingham’s rich heritage!

Google
Second time visiting but this time alone while staying in a hotel the night prior to a conference. I returned because I enjoyed my last group visit and it was familiar to me. First time eating. Found a table as you need the number for orders at the bar. Steak and chips were both really tasty cooked as requested! Gravy charged separately. Lively atmosphere but didn't spoil eating. Rooms for all tastes. Steeped in history. Cosy upstairs, definitely haunted right at the top room, and I think I have another review on a year ago about the cursed galleon in a glass case. Has outdoor areas, and nooks. I would not recommend for people who cannot climb stairs for seating if downstairs was full. Popular. Thanks!

Google
An interesting experience. Advertised as one of the oldest pubs in the UK and built into the caves underneath Nottingham Castle. Food is excellent.....was genuinely surprised at the quality. The interior is very different from normal pubs and includes wonky floors, sandstone walls and a few cobwebs which all add to the experience. Worth a visit if you're in Nottingham. Any geologists amongst you will particularly enjoy a pint here.

Google
An unusual Pub dug into the rocks below Nottingham Castle. It kept the spirit of the times, it should definitely be put on the list of visits. The staff were friendly. The Olde Trip beer we drank and the Fish & Chips food we ate were excellent. IN EXISTENCE SINCE 1189, YE OLDE TRIP IS CARVED OUT OF THE ROCK DIRECTLY UNDER NOTTINGHAM CASTLE AND FAMOUSLY SERVED THE CRUSADERS ON THEIR WAY TO JERUSALEM.

Simon

Google
You can feel the history when you enter this old pub. Loads of atmosphere and friendly staff. The food is good but I'd probably go for something different from the house burger next time. The chips were very good and the duck that my mate had looked nice. Well worth a visit but probably best to book a table.

Amy G.

Yelp
Very fun and nice history Food was okay Go for the ambiance/history Good beer selection

Tanner S.

Yelp
This place is great it's the history mixed with the drinking. The foods solid. The beers flowing. And the history is body shaking.

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Best sticky toffee pudding we tried in all of England! All the food was delicious, amazing atmosphere.

Mama S.

Yelp
Definitely going again beautiful Palestinian ppl went out of there way for us . You should all once in life go and you will realise how generous and polite they are

Ambrosine D.

Yelp
You HAVE to have a pint in here if you make the trip to Nottingham! It's the oldest pup in England, apparently, and to sit inside and soak up the history was enough for me.... Great pub. Guinness was perfect! I only had the chips so I can't really write a food review based on those, although they were delicious...

Jan Ban J.

Yelp
Great food. Great history! Had a good time at this place. It's great having experienced the oldest pub in England.

Jenn L.

Yelp
Great OLD pub! If you are in Nottingham (or driving through the area) stop here!! Good food and amazing prices and the coolest location!

Emil D.

Yelp
To begin with, I have to admit I only went to the Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem to say that I had been to the oldest (purportedly) pub in the islands. And I fully expected it to be a giant tourist trap, with a heavy dose of social distancing thrown in. After a pint I planned on heading over the Nottingham Castle and do some tourist stuff. And I certainly didn't plan to eat there. Well, that all changed after about 10 minutes in the place. What a pleasant surprise! I can honestly say I've never seen a pub grown out of the side of a cliff! And you feel like you could be an extra in a Band of Merry Thieves spot. The place is magnificent. I'm sorry if I can't remember how many ales I tried, but who's counting anyway. Since I knew I'd not likely be back around these parts any time soon, I went ahead and ordered the usual, Fish & Chips and Steak & Ale Pie. Both were fantastic, spot on. Although I'm always shocked to see how much the bar tab is in the UK (or Europe in general for that matter) compared to the food tab (alcohol is always at a premium). But that has nothing to do with the pub. In the end I never made it to the castle, but enjoyed the hell out of the locals and the staff. Do not miss the opportunity to check this place out!

Cosmo W.

Yelp
I love love love this place! I have been coming here so long that it SEEMS like I was here in 1189! Everything about this place is fantastic- the food, the ales, the history, the staff- I always feel like I am in my local pub every time I come here! Ask nicely and you may get a tour of the cellar. You could spend hours walking around, exploring every cubbyhole of this place. And make sure to give a go at the "Ring and Horn game"- and if you're lucky, there will be an expert there to show you how to do it. I cannot recommend this place too much!

Baz B.

Yelp
Unbelievable! Built into the promitory on which the old Nottingham Castle used to stand, this old pub has numerous rooms carved into the actual rock. The bar staff is extremely pleasant and ready to offer their recommendations on both food and drink. I certainly took them up on their generosity and had the house ale: Olde Trip. I found it to be a fantastic darker ale which went along nicely with their recommended house specialty: the beef and ale pie. Stop by, choose a room to relax in, and enjoy this AMAZING establishment!!

David H.

Yelp
Aweosme little tavern! We sat outside for a beverage then sat in the room/cavern near the bar with the bull hook and ring! We had a local show us and several others how to swing the hook and land it on the horn. The bar tenders were fun! They told us all about the old pumping style used for tap beer. The food was great! I had the pork belly. This place was built in 1189 the oldest tavern in England. If in Nottingham make time to stop by for a meal or beverage.

Senthil V.

Yelp
A must visit for anyone visiting Nottingham. Situated right by the Robinhood statue which itself gives a quaint castle like feel on a rainy day :) A small house beautifully converted to a bar with a decent spread of beer selections, but the place is more renowned for its history than the booze, IMHO.

Nick S.

Yelp
This is an amazing pub. The oldest in England and the world ( some conflict there) it is built into the walls of Nottingham Castle. Didn't eat there but the beer was good and the ambience amazing. Closed my eyes and imagined who had drank here hundreds of years before.

Lucy G.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our stay here a quiet little gem with excellent breakfast and awesome bbq space outside.

Sarah B.

Yelp
Awesome pub! Good food, good drinks and a gift shop. I love gift shops! The Trip is full of little rooms here and there, one of which is supposedly haunted. Mysterious breaking glasses and ghostly hands on your shoulder? Yes please! Tours of the cellars are also available for £2.50. But we learned the hard way you have to book 7 days in advance, as we were turned down because the tours were full. The pub claims to be the oldest inn in England, dating back to 1189AD. That is pretty damn old! The food is pretty good too, especially the fried halloumi and chips. This pub is a must if you visit Nottingham.

Melissa G.

Yelp
i really almost don't care about whether or not the food is good...because being able to sit in a cavernous pub that has been there since 1189.. YES 1189... is well worth it! Luckily, the standard pub fare was also good so there wasn't an issue there! phew! it's old, crickety, tons of levels, half levels, cursed model pirate ship (if you clean it, you die), tons of beer, food, and being able to say you ate in the oldest pub in england - - i feel like i've been inducted into some kind of 'cool kids' club. Tons of great ales to choose from - we tried some kind of Robin Hood ale (but of course!) and the Olde Trip. They were both really great. Olde Trip was as smooth as could be. Robin Hood had quite the bite to it. Had so much fun at this kitschy, yet seemingly-authentic, place!

Bindesh S.

Yelp
[+] - very charming old pub (claims to be there since 1189 AD - Decent selection of beer, try their hand pumped cask ale. - Decent bar food, excellent fish and chips. Note: buffalo chicken wings are boneless chicken tenders seven with side of Bacall sauce

Joe P.

Yelp
Wooo Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem was one of the first pubs I ever had real ale in, and I've certainly never looked back. Whether you're a local or a tourist (and most of the people here are tourists) you'll love the wee rooms carved into the rock, the selection of well kept beers and the gastropub-esque food options... not to mention the lovely courtyard space next to the toilets and the outdoor seating area perfect for a sunny day. If you're a visitor to Nottingham Castle you owe it to yourself to make this tiny detour to visit one of the oldest pubs in the world.

Carly R.

Yelp
Food was good but not great, and I feel as though it's just a touristy place. Go for a pint but don't bother with the food.

Christian S.

Yelp
There is no doubt that this is a tourist destination but in spite of that, it is a great pub with a truly charming ambience. The beer is very good. The environment truly historic and fun. I've had only some of the food but I can vouch for the steak and marrow pie. I'm a Canadian business traveller who spends a lot of time in the UK and I make a point to come to this particular Greene King pub. Are there pubs in Nottingham with a better beer selections? Absolutely. But this place hits a lot of key dimensions.

Brian G.

Yelp
You cannot go to Nottingham and not visit Ye Olde Trip (trip = old English word for resting place) for a drink or two. So full of character and charm, and the beer is good too! Very photogenic so bring a camera. It is within walking distance of Nottingham Castle and so you can easily spend a 1/2 day in this area and revel in real history!

Marije V.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! The pub has a sign saying it's the oldest pub of England! I don't know if that's true but you would definitely say so! The place is very cosy and gives you a feeling like you're back in the middle ages! It looks a bit like you're in a cave with how the walls look and the low ceiling. If you're tall you have to be careful with your head! My partner ordered a pasta and a bbq chicken dish and they were both really delicious! The staff was also very kind and we didn't have to wait long for our food. The toilets are clean and like what used to be common in old pubs, the toilets are outside! If you want to visit a pub in Nottingham I would really recommend you this place! It was absolutely lovely!

Craig E.

Yelp
Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem proclaims to be England's oldest pub and having seen the inside I wouldn't argue. The pub has bags of character and is a must see tourist attraction for anyone passing through Nottingham. It is built into the rock at the foot of Nottingham Castle and as a result, feels like you're drinking in a cave if you are downstairs. Upstairs is the more traditional pub-like surroundings although the rooms are tint and can only seat a limited number of patrons. As a result it doesn't need many people to feel crowded. Being a tourist attraction there are a few things you need to be tolerant of such as the constant flashing of cameras (including my own) and excited tourist type people who find every piece of junk on the wall fascinating. There are seats outside and a small courtyard. The toilets are housed on the opposite side of the courtyard which luckily is covered. Despite it's appearance, YOTtJ is an average pub behind the bar. The drinks selection is what you would expect anywhere else, as is the price. Sundays see home cooked roasts served up which is about as English as you can get. Parking near the venue is near impossible however as it is tucked away. It is signposted but check a map first to see where it is as if you're unfamiliar with Nottingham, it might be a touch difficult to find.

Richard L.

Yelp
What an outstanding Pub!! Outstanding history 1189 you can't beat that! You might see sir Lockslee as Robin Hood's castle is above!! Try the warm cider and the local brew!! Had the Steak and Ale pie delicious!!

Todd L.

Yelp
Solid English pub that is worth a trip, it's fun, serious old English and a place locals hang out at. It's a funky weird layout so walk around in it to see all the rooms if you can't find a table. Staff is typical stiff local pub types, they don't seem to care if you're there when you walk in but warm up once you get talking. Talked to several locals which was fun. Food was descent, typical pub fare with no surprises. Beer was nice, several local options that were good with some standbys just in case you can't fInd something to your liking. Decor is eclectic and doubtful in authenticity but still fun and it's a cool place to have a beer in.

Tehya M.

Yelp
Drinks were good, staff was nice and loads of history behind it :) Glad I came down to visit

Peter M.

Yelp
Other reviewers have told you about the history and legends surrounding this place. Ye Knights of Olde were supposed to have gone about 100 yards out of Nottingham Castle before stopping off for a few pints, on their 2,000-mile trip to beat up Saluddin. Ah well, if you believe this you'll believe anything. Allegedly founded in 1189, Ye Olde Trip cetainly is old. So is the plumbing, and I'd recommend that you take your toilet break before going to the pub, and not in it. Most visitors sit outside or in the courtyard, and the smell of stale beer within is ample reason for this. Nevertheless, an excellent choice of real ales is available, with their own Brand 'Old Trip'. Clientele is mostly tourists; in a 25-minute stay I was asked by Argentinians and then Japanese to take photos of them. Bikers of the Hells Angels persuasion also seem to frequent the Trip - perhaps the smell appeals to them. An historical curiosity, but not a place to linger.

Thomas M.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, but rude waitress ruined my visit. I visited Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem for a second time in February 2015, after my first visit three years before. I immediately noticed that the real-ale selection in this Greene King pub has improved, there were just a couple of real ales available on hand-pump before. Unfortunately, my visit was ruined by a rude waitress who pulled faces to tell her colleague behind the bar about the customers whose(!) faces or attire she didn't appreciate. Unbeknownst to them - or so she tought! This is completely unacceptable and unprofessional behaviour. She was a younger, medium-height, somewhat mousey type. The bigger lady behind the bar, by contrast, was friendly and professional. This experience loses the place 2 stars. The decor is atmospheric and nicely quaint (if probably not entirely original). It's a tourist trap to be sure, but the prices for food and beer aren't outrageous, really. For lunch I had one of their "deals" - essentially, a dish and a beer at a slightly reduced price. My food was a flat-bed sandwich with warm pulled-pork (see picture). It was pretty good.

Dave D.

Yelp
You know what they say when in Rome. Well when your here you have to stop in for a beer. Great little piece of history.

Eric Y.

Yelp
The fish and chips were the best I had while in England. We were able to find a seat inside. Very busy, very popular.

Amy H.

Yelp
Great little pub, not too busy on Sundays. Roast was mint - with giant Yorkshire pudding!!

Parvinder H.

Yelp
This is very much a ye olde style British pub and when my friend said it was supposedly the oldest pub in Nottingham/the country I was definitely up for going. As we walked in, it was like we had been transported back in time. There were rickety passage ways, low ceilings with authentic beams, a funny smell, as well as the onset of my claustrophobia. There were plenty of talking points in the pub some of which included, a knights outfit and supposedly a fertility chair which I really wanted to see but couldn't, as it was close to closing time and they had already closed the upstairs. If that wasn't enough, on the night we came in there was also a Canadian lady who was on what seemed like a first date and she knew everything about everyone and anything. Listening into her conversations was a personal highlight. I wish we had gotten here sooner, it had a decent selection of real ale and seemed like a fun place. The staff weren't the friendliest but then again it is Britain! They had outdoor seating area which would be great on a hot summers perhaps to try some of their food. I would definitely come back.

Erin G.

Yelp
Ok seriously if I had only time to do one thing in Nottingham I would pass on the Nottingham Castle and come here. My friend has passed through here many years ago and told me I would find it very interesting. There is a lot of history here; King James was supposed to have run the Crusades from out of here. All I know there is a lot of different rooms (caves), so don't grab a seat inside immediately but go explore. So my experience with pubs back in the States is that their food usually is not the best. But their version of bangers and mash (sausage and potatoes) was very good. They had a nice selection of cold beers (England what is up with terrible warm beers) and then even had a few selections from the States. Staff was nice and everyone in their seemed like a local and were willing to help give advice on local tourist attraction. Overall I found this place very nice. It is right below the castle, which to be honest I was not impressed with. The castle was more like a museum than a castle, although it did say that on the outside, but I was hoping to see more of what it used to look like, again the reason to come here if you had to choose. Glad my friend made this recommendation, don't want to miss this place.

Kay R.

Yelp
I have to give "The Trip" 5 stars because: a) I go there every single time I'm in the UK b) It's hewn out of solid rock. Did you hear me? Solid fucking rock! c) It has several little rooms which you have to crawl around on all fours to find. Well, you don't have to crawl, but there are several rooms. d) The beer is great. The food is good. A bit heavy but good. e) The history gets into your pores it's so intense. Feel how the Crusaders (they were pretty short guys not Hollywood hunks like the movies portray - check out the height of the door frames) must have felt having a drink before they set out to wreak carnage on the Holy Land. I would take a star away if I could because there are always loud American tourist making me feel a little embarrassed about my adopted homeland - but I can't because I'm usually responsible for taking them there. Damn.

Audrey L.

Yelp
Caves? Beer? Together? YES! This is a must do for any first timer in Nottingham and a staple for locals as well! The bar is small and it does get packed easily so not the best for a big group but its kitchy and fun never the less. Drink prices are reasonable and there is a tiny outside as well which helps when it gets too crowded. There is a nice menu as well which features cultural staples and some nice sandwiches that I have yet to try but from what I have seen and smelled go out to those eating around me it all looks really good. Overall a fantastic way to spend some time in Nottingham.

Chris F.

Yelp
Hard to give this pub less than five given the pub and given its setting. As long as they serve a few different beers well, which they do..in fact they have quite a wide selection, then they cannot go wrong. I got myself a pint of Crazy Like a Fox and took it into as many of the different rooms as I could before settling out in the courtyard, where a beer festival was occurring. Simply put - it's an essential Nottingham pub and you should make it your first port of call in this city! Heed my words!

Becky M.

Yelp
This is a totally cool place and a must see for any Nottingham tourist that enjoys a good pint. It's the oldest pub in England, built into the side of a hill, kind of like a cave. The food is standard pub fare, not out of this world, but it will fill you up and satisfy. Every pint I've had is excellent and the staff pouring them have been equally excellent. I just think the whole place is charming and interesting.

Ashley G.

Yelp
Great "pubby" atmosphere. Oldest inn in England and it certainly shows in its nooks and crannies. Best fish and chips I've ever had! Definitely worth going to!

Georgia N.

Yelp
Really love the fact this pub is literally caved into the cliff face. And it is the oldest pub in Britain apparently, it certainly smells it inside! The exterior and interior were absolutely amazing, steeped in history and glowing with architectural triumph. I loved looking, sitting and being inside the pub. The ales were amazing, so many wonderful locally brewed ales and more to try. I didn't think much of the food. It was surprisingly, pub like, which from the decor and atmosphere of the place I wouldn't have expected. Thats not to say the food wasn't good, it just wasn't as good as I'd have hoped from such a beautiful historical pub. The desserts were definitely lacking and it takes an age to get served and ordered anyway. If you aren't a fan of stairs though or are planning getting obscenely drunk in this pub, i'd maybe find another (flatter) pub to visit!

Raechel W.

Yelp
So my friends and I were starving when we arrived in Nottingham so we decided to give in and eat at what we assumed would be a tourist attraction with expensive bad food... but not so! I ordered a Yorkshire beef wrap from this pub and got quite a surprise. It was wonderfully tasty and everything I wanted in a pub lunch. It wasn't as cheap as a student such as me would prefer, but worth what I paid for. The ambiance of being able to eat in an 800 year old pub is also quite exciting. This pub also is able to boast a good selection of ales if you fancy a pint.

Richard L.

Yelp
1189. It's not the address, it's the year of establishment. over 800 years old. It has a good range of ales, and a normal range of other drinks. They have their own ale which is definitely worth sampling. It can be a little 'touristy' at times, but on a quiet evening it is a nice place to unwind with pint. It's definitely worth a visit if you are in Nottingham.

Stefan M.

Yelp
Absolutely lovely pub- incredible looks and feeling as soon as you walk in the door, I really recommend the visit. Some lovely local drinks, couldn't ask for much more really!

Keira L.

Yelp
How could I not give the oldest Inn in England 5 stars??? This place is cool. Nottingham is touted as "Shottingham" by some. Funny nickname, hell yes, but I never felt unsafe. My mom was the one who suggested this place. Cool points for life from my sister and I. First, the old caves were great. I found myself examining everything. Looking up, down and all around. We had some great beers but more importantly for 3 American girls, GOOD FOOD! The sliders were delicious. Best meal we had in all of Lincolnshire! Service was friendly and accommodating. Went in during lunch time but would love to spend a few nighttime hours there to see what unfolds. Love Ye Olde Trip! Hope to visit again some day soon!

Alan N.

Yelp
There are already some detailed reviews on here so, suffice to say, if you are visiting Nottingham, you should definitely patronise this pub at least once. 800 years of history, dramatic setting & decent ales.

Qype User (Templa…)

Yelp
The pub sign says 1189ad and it claims to be the oldest pub in Britain. Legend says that the Crusaders stopped off at the Inn at the foot of the Castle for refreshments on their way to the Holy Land. It is partly cut out of the rock under the castle and has caves for cellers. The flagstone floors are uneven and it is tiny and twisty with little bars and an upstairs cave area with a wonderful wooden bar. Also a museum. The rock lounge and snug are said to be haunted. Good food although they sell out of the veggie alternative early. Bikers seem to go there in good weather and lounge outside on the grass with their bikes and pints. There are also a few seats and tables outside. They have medieval food nights and story telling nights but never managed to get to one, The food at the special nights is cheapish..around £8. They also have beer festivals. You can even buy a crusader cross tea shirt and books. Well worth a visit if only to look at this amazingly curious place.

The Olde Trip to Jerusalem is apparently the oldest pub in Britain. Its set into a rock face and there are loads of caves beneath the pub. There's also a well cut out of the floor so you can look straight down in to the caverns under the pub. Its very popular with tourists but its a large pub with lots of different rooms so it didn't feel too packed. I would recommend this unique pub to any visitors to Nottingham.

Yelp
If you like them traditional i.e. REALLY old, then you can't do much better than this place. You see, Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem is so called because legend states that Crusaders, before commencing on their brave (but ultimately, doomed) efforts to claim back the Holy Land from the Saracens, topped up on that old Dutch courage - like pious camels - in here firstly (priorities and all that etc). Not sure what prices were back then - perhaps a sack of wheatsheafs or potatoes, but in any event, you can now make out like Richie the Lion Heart and get pissed in here before dealing with infidels. I must say, you can get comfy in here, so you may find you'll struggle to find the legs to get to Nottingham Castle, let alone venture as far as the Middle East. It's all about preserving tradition in here - it is a living museum after all - so don't expect cocktails and pina coladas and Mexican waiters. Food is average, but the place is so small you probably won't be staying in that long anyway.

Yelp
Love it. Quaint little pub. If you like a bit of history, and that feeling of old but loved this is the pub for you.

Yelp
Not been to this pub for quite a while but have been a few times in the past! Really like the atmosphere definitely worth a visit if you are on a short break or holidays. It's found very near to Nottingham castle. When I have been to Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem there has been a man come into the pub selling little pots of seafood (cockles, prawns etc). Not sure if this still happens but I thought it was quite unique. This place has lots and lots of character!
