Warm, welcoming and the epitome of graciousness!
My partner and I were looking to spend a night "away" before the birth of our daughter in May, and figured that if we couldn't exactly swing a trip out of town (we're from the Detroit area), we could still use our passports and at least FEEL like we'd traversed a great distance.
Found Ye Old Walkerville B&B on a travel site, and booked it as soon as we saw what charm could be found by spending essentially the same cash as a swanky riverfront hotel. I am so very glad that we did.
We were welcomed by Larry, one of the proprietors of the B&B. A more jovial and friendly human being we'd yet to encounter - until we met his wife, Joyce, that is! We were shown to our room and given a rundown of the area, as well as maps, guides and helpful suggestions. The room itself (the Samantha suite on the topmost floor of the turn-of-the-century home) was all things cozy. Fireplace, soft rugs, the most well-stuffed down comforter on the planet atop the king-size bed. Oh, and the bath!! My partner is a towering 6'5" and can NEVER fit in a bath tub with all his extremities submerged - but here he could! Loads of hot water, fluffy towels and built-in soaps and shampoos. Truly lovely.
The location is terrific, with easy access to many shops, restaurants and bars, but in a very quiet neighborhood. You get the best of both worlds this way.
All else pales in comparison with what we discovered the next morning, however. We sleepily trudged down the stairs for our 8:30 breakfast date and found the dining room to be laid out beautifully, with Larry and Joyce busy at making breakfast. Larry served us tea, coffee and juice, while Joyce chatted happily at us from the kitchen. She knew from our welcome email that I have issues with gluten, and so had prepared a special breakfast that even I could enjoy! As Larry regaled us with stories, Joyce brought our first course to us: a beautifully poached Bosq pear nestled in lavender-sprinkled sour cream with fresh cranberries and maple syrup. Divine. Once the remainder of the B&Bs guests joined us, we were served beautiful veggie frittatas with sauteed spinach, roasted tomato slices and crisp bacon. My favorite part? Joyce had tried her hand at a gluten-free blueberry biscuit recipe - and they were WONDERFUL. Sweet, delicately salty, doughy and with a wonderful outer crustiness. I was so touched that she went out of her way to do this - and was sort of awed by how delectable they were. Noticing my enthusiasm, she came out of the kitchen brandishing a bag of the remaining dough and instructed me to take it home! Which I did. And I am happily coating my keyboard in the crumbs from that second batch of biscuits as I type this. =)
If you're looking for a peaceful nights sleep, preceded by an easy walk to a night out and followed by one of the most beautifully thought-out, delicious breakfasts you've ever had...go see Larry and Joyce at Ye Old Walkerville. It was truly rejuvenating...and we'll be back to introduce our tiny human to our new friends!
