I found a great vintage Hawaiian shirt to buy as a gift! The cashier was very helpful and friendly, she even wrapped the gift up in a bow and made it look great. The selection in this shop was more unique and higher quality than the typical gift shops all over the island. They have a great selection of vintage Hawaiian shirts, local artwork, and interesting knick knacks. I'm recommending this place to my family members who will be in Kauai next month.

We went yesterday and met the nicest lady at the shop, I wish I got her name. She told us about history of pieces and has so much passion. We just adored her and the items at the shop! Bought a few things and wish we could take home more.

Google
This shop was one I had on my MUST SEE list while on the island. We literally just stumbled across it while shopping in Hanalei. They had a large selection of (legit) vintage Hawaiian clothing. I tried on a few that I liked and was pleasantly surprised I found one I couldn't live without! My boyfriend chatted with the what seemed to be the owner while I purchased the dress. Super nice guy, very clean store, and a great selection of nice vintage items. Super happy with my dress! Check them out!

I was interested in making an offer on a guitar and left my number with an extremely aggressive offer given the current market. The owner immediately sent a few rude responses without any consideration. That’s fine. What isn’t fine is that when I said my offer still stood if they changed their mind, they responded by saying they were blocking me. Extremely unprofessional and rude—grossly overpriced too, even for a remote island. Just glad I’m not having that horrible of a day.

Christina was awesome and helped us find lots of cute treasures. Love this shop! Definitely recommend you stop by if you like vintage style

Google
This is our second time visiting this store — we’ve been coming for almost 6 years now! Every time we visit we find a treasure. This visit was no exception. This family run shop is a great way to support local and be eco-conscious by buying vintage. Hang around to learn great suggestions on other places around the island where you can support local owned business. Our kids bought Hawaiian coloring books, we got a beautiful dish for our gallery wall and we even picked up a vintage “Primo Beer” shirt in a kids size for our “Primo”.

Google
What a cool store. Lots of high quality items including vintage, authentic Hawaiian shirts. I bought one that was made in the 60s, in super great shape. The gentleman who assisted us (I believe he was the owner Steven), was fantastic. He really showed his passion when speaking with us. I absolutely love talking to people that love what they do. It's super encouraging to me.

Google
Such a wonderful store right in Hanalei! We bought a nice honu from here which is made from coconut tree bark. Very high quality stuff right here in this shop. Must visit! The owner is so knowledgeable about the local Hawaiian culture and it was so enlightening to have a conversation with him.

Yelp
We walked into this shop and got a very nice greeting from the shop keeper (his family owns the shop). We even chatted for a while about the best coffee on the island! They mostly carried vintage clothing (and some new) and it was a nice selection. My sister purchased a pair of cotton shorts. Customer service was stellar! I'm really glad we stumbled in to this store.

Yelp
What a delightful shop, this family owned business specializes in vintage Hawaiian shirts. It was a pleasure to listen to the owner talk about the history of the Hawaiian shirt as well as share is treasures with us, their selection of vintage shirts were amazing, you can clearly see the time and passion in selecting them and preserving their integrity and character, this store takes the Hawaiian shirts to a whole new level. While your there pick up a book on the history of the shirts you will not regret it. Aloha!

Yelp
I stumbled upon this cute little store and fell in love with it! I needed a dress for dinner that night, which I neglected to bring with me, and I was happy with their selections and great prices. The quality of their clothing is exceptional.

Yelp
"Where is it?" I kept asking, looking for a store front visible from the road and somehow completely missing the sign with the big yellow fish on it. Once I found the front doors around the corner, I was delighted with what we saw! The mix of new art and quality vintage is excellent and I'm sure we would have taken far more home with us had our luggage situation allowed. They do offer shipping, as the helpful clerk told me, but we opted for the provided bubble wrap for our wares. Focusing heavily on Hawaiian vintage, the colors and selection are a great mix and put a smile on my face. I would definitely visit again!

Yelp
On our family vacation in Kauai, we stopped in Hanalei. My brother in law is very picky when it comes to clothing. It took us a whole morning to look for the right Hawaiian shirt until he spotted the one he was looking for at Yellowfish Trading Co. The purchase was done in a minute. The next few minutes were spent in a nice conversation with the friendly store owner. We then went to have lunch in a nearby Hanalei Bread restaurant. Few hours later we noticed that we lost the bag with a shirt and realized that it must have been left at the restaurant which was already closed for the day. We called Yellowfish Trading, explained what happened and asked for help. Next morning the owner went to the restaurant and recovered our bag which we picked up the same day. All the way, the owner was more than kind, helpful and friendly. Moreover, his store carries a very tasteful selection of unique clothing and souvenirs, well worth visiting. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Great place for Vintage Hawaiian clothes, lamps and houseware. Bought this reasonably priced romper there. It's worth the trip if you're into 50s, 60s and 70s Hawaiian

Yelp
Fantastic store with amazing vintage shirts, dresses and decor. Owner(?) was super friendly and we learned a lot about the shirts from him. Purchased a vintage silk shirt for around $50 for my partner and a vintage tiki bar promo plate for myself for $15. Amazing vintage advertising signs for sale as well at very decent prices.

Yelp
This place has the cutest mix of old and new stuff alike with such a welcoming atmosphere tucked away in a quite part of the building. They have some fun vintage Hawaiian shirts and old odds and ends that are sure to intrigue you. Did I mention the staff is super friendly!

Yelp
There are lots shops in Hanalei, but there's only one Yellowfish Trading Company. Yellowfish has been in Hanalei about twenty years. The goods here are mostly Hawaiian vintage mixed with modern surfer. The wares are fresh, full of a sense of style and humor. There are many vintage Hawaiiana items here, very 40's thrift shop-y but well-selected and well-curated. The antique items are pricey, but they are vintage and the modern mix of items (books, bags, signs) are standard spend-at-home prices. All items are artfully displayed and fun to look at. While my days of collecting have given way to simplifying and pairing down, and collecting experiences mainly, I could see finding room in the suitcase for a well selected coffee table book on with historical photos of longboard surfers like the Duke, or an adorable 40s Hawaiian rag doll with an intact grass skirt and a red flower behind her ear.

Yelp
This is a great little shop in Hanalei to find things you did not know you wanted, but once you see them in the store, you just might have to get them. Pricing is very fair. We found some great lampshades, and Vail helped us get the right ones with excellent service!

Yelp
This is a very cute store, selling a mix of new vintage-inspired items, as well as Hawaiian antiquities from the mid-century era. Check out the 70-year-old hand-woven grass skirts. I purchased some beautiful barkcloth cushion covers. This is, undoubtedly, the best store on the island, if you are looking for authentic and vintage items. It's not a huge place, but it's worth a visit. Hanalei is otherwise just a hodge podge of the typical tacky souvenirs you can find anywhere.

Yelp
Went here to purchase one of the lamps pictured in their advertising but they are just bait, not for sale and everything else was outrageously priced.

Yelp
This store is a little hard to find... go to BarACuda and then it is behind there on the left. A hidden gem in Hanalei. It has something for everyone. We collect salt and pepper sets, and there were so many to choose from, it took us two visits to make our pick. There are whimsical items and also some very high quality lamps. Worth a visit. Theme is Hawaiiana. The new owner is very nice and accommodating. We will make this a stop each time we visit Hanalei.

Yelp
This was the most interesting store I visited in Kauai. Everything there has a story. They sale retro Hawaiian shirts, along with classic/retro Hawaiian decor. We stopped to look for five minutes and were there for thirty. It was just so much fun to be there. Vail, the employee that evening was so much fun to talk with. She was helpful without being pushy in any way. Plus, she knew the back stories behind the products, which made what we were looking at all the more interesting. If you want something classy, with a story from the past--all price ranges, too--then visit Yellowfish Trading.

Yelp
Very, very cool store! Magaret ("Gritt") is a lovely lass who enjoys conversation with her customers and her shop is a great little find. The store carries hawaiian collectibles, as well as both antique & contemporary furnishings. Scattered among all of this are kitschy books, games, and gifts. The prices are high, but no more so than if this place was located in SF or LA.
google avatar

Cathy S.

Yelp
It is easy to spend a lot of time poking around this fabulous little store. I can't say I am a huge fan of contemporary Hawaiiana but I love the vintage stuff and Yellowfish is chock full of it. There is also a lot of non-Hawaiian kitsch, fun nice gift items and books. Yellowfish is a breath of fresh air after having wandered into one too many ABC-like stores.

Yelp
This store has more unique and vintage items than any other store I found during my trip!

Yelp
A very cute little shop. It's a shame that they've been having an issue with shoplifting. My Boyfriend and I really loved the vintage WWI 'Enlist in the Navy' poster they had framed on the wall- but at $1800 it was a bit stiff for us. I'm sure it's vintage- but if they had offered a reproduction at a lesser cost (even an inflated one) we would have bought it. Instead, we'll end up ordering it online. The shop owner seemed perturbed that what we liked about the poster were the serious homoerotic overtones (It's a bunch of guys in navy uniforms standing with their arms around each other- with awesome vintage style mustaches). They had some very nice vintage barkcloth pillows that I thought were very reasonably priced, and the quality of all of the items is very nice. I love the color palette of the store!

Yelp
I came back to visit Yellowfish Trading Co. this year after having visited years ago, and am delighted to say how much I reveled in the experience! Walking into this unique store feels as though you've taken a step into the past ... and the future at the same time! I drooled over the stunning antique lamps and tables, their teak benches, bark cloth pillows, panels and material ... then I was delighted by the spunky cocktail napkins, flirty postcards, beautiful journals, books on Kauai past and present, the stunning antique and new jewelry, and the delicious soaps and lotions. I learned that Yellowfish Trading Co's owner refreshes the inventory weekly so that each visit is a different experience! Cool! Which Kauai chain stores or boutiques can boast about that??!! I bought one-of-a-kind gifts (you can't come to Kauai and not buy gifts!) for my friends and family, which they'll be enjoying and talking about for years. Plan to spend some time here; you'll love the ambience, the shop's music and staff, and the total experience.

Yelp
There are lovely things in here, however the owner is rude, pompous, annoyed. I'm from Oahu and have visited this shop many times and found always the same snotty, stuck up attitude. Yesterday I had the distinct impression that she thought we were stealing the way she followed us out the door. My friend later said he felt the same way. We are just rather average looking middle aged professionals. We definitely should not have arroused such suspicion . She was even ultra annoyed with the lost dog that wandered in! Also, I've been collecting old silkies etc since the seventies, and worked in garment manufacturing in Honolulu in seventies and eighties. The REPOs she has in here are priced as though thery are original. 695 dollars for a repo! But lots of rich people stop in there so I'm sure they'll think nothing of paying it. I won't be going in there again.

Yelp
This is a really nicely curated gift shop with a wonderful mix of vintage and new. There's a great variety, and while the price points are pretty high, you can get some beautiful and unique things. Definitely check this place out.

Yelp
If you love vintage lamps and want to pay for them this is your place. Wonderful inventory but about 3 times what you can find vintage pottery for in California. Go if you have no budget!!

Yelp
Awesome store! You must stop by while in Hanalei.......we found a wonderful book of Kauai for $9 and a shell necklace for $12.

Yelp
This was one of two of my favorite shops during my two week stay in Kauai. There a lot of souvenir items here, but they are high quality and unique with is always a win. I snagged a huge tote bag that served me well during my trip (I will also use it on my boat this upcoming summer) and a magnet.
google avatar

Yelp
You know those people that collect souvenirs on vacation? Things like shot glasses or spoons? I am one of those people but I collect scarves. Every vacation and country I have visited, I have purchased a scarf. I had, up until the point I found Yellowfish Trading Co., not found any scarves worth buying in Hanalei. Trust me, I get that purchasing a scarf in Hawaii seems ridiculous. I walked in to a wall of beautiful sarongs and scarves; all in beautiful colors with tropical patterns. I ended up purchasing a blue and purple scarf that has been the bearer of many compliments. Anyway, it's a nice little store to visit for something nontraditional.

Yelp
Super cute shop run by a very interesting, kind lady. My husband and I really enjoyed just wandering the store and checking out her unique items. I really loved: antique postcards, ancient maps, varied books about Kauai (movies made here, folk tales, etc), as well as a bunch of interesting items. I ended up buying a fabulous tote bag with the islands on it (very unique that I did not see in other stores), a journal, and a really great book I intend to read to my children about Hawaiian folk legends.

Yelp
Wandering around Hanalei and wanting to get out of the sudden downpour, I followed a walkway that had construction all around. Sketchy I know-but it's how I roll on vacation. Low and behold, I was transported through a door into Hawaiiana Heaven!!! Eclectic, funky, and all things vintage I was instantly in love. With that being said, vintage/antique typically=way out of my price point. I was sad as I was ready to leave after basking in the yards and yards of beautiful hawaiiana fabrics, before I stumbled upon some vintage ads, that were turned into magnets. After pretty much pulling out every magnet out of the basket, the employee working that day pulled out some additional ones that were not put out on display. I ended up walking away with over 10 different varieties. I took over the register area in spreading everything out, but the employee working was so sweet and insisted I take as much space as I needed, after I apologized for making a mess. So do not fret! If you take your time as well, you'll be sure to find something within your price point from this quaint little shop. Whether it be vintage or modern, I think this little spot can fit your souvenir needs for those "special people" as well.

Yelp
Really fun, authentic wares. But gods is everything pricey! Beware the antiques; sure, it looks like a tiny old matchbox... how much could it cost? ALL THE MONEY.

Jay S.

Yelp
This is consistently one of my most favorite stores on Kauai, settled back from the main highway in Hanalei. They have a great assortment of collectables and Hawaiiana, always nicely presented and operated by pleasant local folks. Beautiful vintage bark cloth, framed colorful menu's and art, brick a brack, vintage tropical pottery, Bakelite jewery as well as classic Hawaiian furniture....simply not to be missed on any trip up to Hanalei. NYTimes says: This shop has a well-curated collection of old and new Hawaiiana: Art Deco teapots and furniture, vintage patterned textiles by the yard, fragile hand-colored photographs, and books and crafts by local writers and artists. Tasteful, accessibly priced items remind you of where you are: white cotton tea towels printed with maps of the Hawaiian Islands, chic woven basket purses, and a book about Hawaiian surfers by the legendary surf pioneer Tom Blake. Jewelry includes hand-carved Hawaiian fish hooks made out of cow bone and rainbow-hued bracelets made of 1940s Bakelite dice and mah-jongg tiles. Yellowfish is also rich with astonishing one-of-a-kind items, like a 1940s "trench art" lamp made by a World War II serviceman, painted with a tropical scene and trimmed with shells and military decorations.

Yelp
Finally found a store that isn't the run of the mill tourist shop! Very beautifully and eclectically curated antiques along side new items. Could have spent hours in there and came back 3 times! Bought some fun kitchen towels, flower pumice stones and a children's book that was locally written. Magical and well done!

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful store! Beautiful selection of unique Hawaiian products, both new and vintage. It's where I found all of my best souvenirs on a recent trip to Kauai.

Yelp
Giving one star because 0 stars isn't an option. Being rude to my dad is the fastest way to make me furious. We came into the store this evening after dinner. My dad, a Mason and a Shriner, saw the fez at the front of the shop. Interested, he went to the front desk to ask about it. The woman at the desk, my brother says her name was Barbara, very rudely grunted out, "Are you talking to me?" Yes, shopkeep, he was talking to you. When a customer is asking something in your direction, they are generally inquiring about the goods you are selling. Shockingly *SARCASM* she didn't know much about the fez. My dad proceeds to look up on his phone where the fez was from. Hoping to better inform the woman about the goods she is selling, he attempted to tell her. She almost slammed into him running to look in a chest of linens. She very rudely barked at him, "I'll be with you in a minute!" He turned on his heel and was out the door with his wallet. My mother and sister had somehow managed to find some tchotchkes in the store, but because of the worker's hateful attitude, we chose to not buy. Also, the store and everything in it with a porous surface REEKED of whatever that smell is. Also, word to the wise, a sticker promoting a divisive politician in the window of your store is a great way to turn away business.

Irene A.

Yelp
Amazing store, ONLY one you will find with true Hawaiiana Antiques and great finds. Ladies there are nice. Always a must stop on my Kauai trips. Didn't want to YELP them because it is my favorite store, but JUST BE CAREFUL when shipping back to the mainland, the prices are outrageous and you are not informed of the fee until it shows up on your credit card two months later. Take an empty luggage or bite the bullet.
google avatar

Suzanne O.

Yelp
Love this store! We found some very cute items and lugged them back to San Francisco with us. Dangerous place, as you may end up bringing so much stuff back with you that you have to buy another piece of luggage.
google avatar

Janet D.

Yelp
Every time I come to Hanalei, I make a point to stop in this store. You have to look for it as it's tucked away in the back of the main shopping center. It's packed with island treasures with a retro touch...like Bakelite jewelry, unique books, linens, etc.. Not your typical cheesy tourist junk...and, while some items are expensive, in general the prices are reasonable.
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
This shop was very hard to find but I found an amazing lamp that I loved. I was charged too much on shipping and the owner refunded me. How honest and sweet was that. The lamp arrived in one piece and I am so excited about my beautiful lamp from Hanalei Hawaii. An honest good shop!
google avatar

Yelp
The owner contacted me regarding our bad experience with one of the employees. Great to see an owner that cares!
google avatar

Thomas D.

Yelp
My family and I had previously had an awful experience here, but the owner contacted us via email to apologize and give us a $50 gift card. The fact that she cares about her customers nets this place a few more stars.

Liane C.

Yelp
I have been shopping at this store since it first opened years ago. I pick up vintage art pottery, fabulous panels of 1940's barkcloth drapery, antique lamps and super cool furniture. Every thing in there is discovered and collected by Grit herself. She has an impeccable eye for the best in vintage home decor and vintage Hawaiiana . This is one of my favorite stores on the planet. Thank you Grit !
google avatar

Susan P.

Yelp
This store never lets me down! One of my two favorite stores on the island! Hawaiiana! Unique, quirky and festive items for everyone! The help is always so friendly and patient. And...they ship will your gifts home (for a fee, of course), but how convenient is that?! I've shopped here for over 15 years!

Yelp
Fantastic store!!! I had so much fun looking around at all the new and vintage items in this store, what a delight!!! I actually came back to the store a few times during my week long stay in Kaua'i. I was always able to find something i wanted each time i went in! My boyfriend even found some doodads he enjoyed purchasing, which is a rare thing. I was very impressed with the vintage Hawaiian fabric that they've got there, very cool if you wanted to create a souvenir of your own. Highly recommended store for anyone who travels through Hanalei.

Byron S.

Yelp
Great store and very friendly!!..amazing gifts at reasonable prices..i found so many things that i have not seen anywhere else.
