Best Lake Vacations in the U.S.

"A scenic park lake with steady breezes and waterfront wildlife that makes it excellent for sailing; Bridge Bay Marina on the north shore provides launch ramps, floating docks, and a ranger station for boating permits, and sailors can overnight at special campsites on the roadless south shore. People have been cruising these waters since 1871 when the Hayden Expedition used a sail-powered rowboat to explore the lake." - Joe Yogerst Joe Yogerst Joe Yogerst is a writer, editor, and photographer with over three decades of experience covering travel. Lake Yellowstone is an absolute treasure within Yellowstone National Park. The lake's crystal-clear water, surrounded by majestic mountains and lush forests, creates a serene and picturesque setting. The sheer size of the lake is impressive, and the tranquility of the area makes it perfect for anyone seeking a peaceful escape into nature. Make sure to pack layers, as the weather can be unpredictable, and bring a camera to capture the jaw-dropping scenery. Whether you're into boating, fishing, or simply enjoying the views, Lake Yellowstone is a must-see destination that showcases the raw beauty of nature!

During our trip to the park, we drove around searching for a nice spot to see Yellowstone Lake. We finally found it when we arrived at the Fishing Bridge Visitor Center. This spot offers the opportunity to walk around the beautiful shoreline and enjoy the vastness of Yellowstone Lake. We were stunned by the size of the lake and its undeniable beauty. At this spot, you can see the endless blue lake stretching out before you, providing breathtaking scenery. Yellowstone Lake is the largest high-elevation lake (above 7,000 feet) in North America, covering approximately 136 square miles (352 square kilometers) with over 110 miles (177 kilometers) of shoreline. It sits at an elevation of about 7,732 feet (2,357 meters) above sea level. After seeing it for ourselves, it easily became a must-see destination that we would recommend to anyone visiting Yellowstone National Park.

So so many places to stop along this lake. Mountainous backgrounds, excellent sunrises and sunsets, and plenty of geysers and trails.

Yellowstone Lake was one of my favorite parts about Yellowstone National Park. It’s a huge lake, with very beautiful views. It reminded me of the California coast. There are lots of places to pull off along the coast with picnic tables. Some areas are thermal and you can see steam coming out on the shore.

Yellowstone lake cover 136 surface miles and it is the largest high elevation lake in North America. Interesting fact is that there is no fishing allowed from the “fishing bridge” since 1973. Yellowstone Lake runs through numerous parts of the park but we found the best view to be on East entrance road. I would highly recommend Steamboat Point picnic ground for awesome views of the water during a stop for lunch or dinner. Steamboat is just a mile or so east of the fishing bridge. Enjoy.

Lake Yellowstone is huge as a sea, cold as a ice. It is amazing experience, with the beautiful clear water. I saw thousands of the lakes, but this lake was something special. Wild, cold and tempting in same way. I will be back for sure...

There is nothing I could say that could better describe the beauty of this lake inside a beautiful park. Hard to miss if going through the park but make sure and stop.

Yelp
I drove through Yellowstone Lake as I was going to West Thumb Geyser Basin on the eastern portion of the park. It's a HUGE lake and it took me a while to drive down the road with the lake by my side. There are a lot of pulloffs that you can soak in the views or even go down to the lake and play in the water. It'll take you a while to drive around the entire lake and there are multiple parts of it. West Thumb and Grant Visitor Center will be closest to the main sections of the park and closest to Grand Loop Road. Although the South and Southeast arms of the lake are further away I imagine they're less crowded so you can have more peace doing all your fun activities.

Yelp
This lake is huge. We went to the part by the Fishing Bridge Visitors Center. We also enjoyed the lake from the West Thumb Geyser Basin. The lake shore at the visitor center was so serene. I highly recommend visiting it here. There were almost no people around. The West Thumb Geyser Basin was also pretty neat. It was cool that there was geothermal activity right on the lake. You'll likely drive by this lake while in Yellowstone at some point. You might as well stop for a bit to enjoy it.

Yelp
I love this beautiful lake in Yellowstone National Park. It's pretty large (136 sq mi) and has a few small islands. I stayed in Lake Village during my stay and spent some evenings enjoying the view of the lake from my front porch. If you are driving Yellowstone's Grand Loop, Yellowstone Lake is more toward the southern part of the drive. West Thumb Geyser Basin, Lake Yellowstone Hotel, Bridge Bay and the Fishing Bridge are a few spots you can stop at while driving along the shore. For animals, I saw quite a bit of bison and elk wandering near the lake. I think my favorite part about staying near Yellowstone Lake was observing a full moon cast a moonlight over the waters at night.

Yelp
Hey hey hey, Boo Boo- this lake is better than the average lake! Largest high elevation lake on the continent at 7,732 feet above sea level. This is such a picturesque lake. This mountain lake is something special though. In the wintertime, the top of the lake freezes over. Yellowstone gets some of the coldest temperatures in the continental United States. However, the lake never freezes over completely. Underwater geothermal fissures leak out volcanically heated water, which rises over the colder water, preventing water from freezing. There's several vantage points to check out the lake- depending on what you're looking to see. There's some geysers that offer great views over in the West Thumb Geyser area, right up next to the lake. There's the fishing bridge, with its big general store. That's a good place to do some fishing, obviously, but it also affords good chances to check out some bears here. The thing I don't understand is, with this huge awesome lake, why aren't there jet skis and pontoon and crazy amounts of motor boating going on out here? When I went, the lake was surprisingly quiet and placid. There were pelicans here when we went. Whoop. On the east side of the park, be sure to see the steep views for long distance views. Scenic!

Yelp
Great campground! So much wildlife to see. Easy access to all the attractions. Loved all of it!

Yelp
This is a Beautiful large lake but when we visited it it was still frozen i recommend you contact Yellowstone to see if it open for kayaking but there were other lakes that have defrosted to visit but Yellowstone is Still a very nice place after middle of may

Yelp
Picture perfect background that will literally take your breath away. My tip is to head to the Yellowstone Lake Hotel, walk through the hotel towards the back where they have a small patio that you can stand on to get the perfect picture. The water glistens and is so clear that it has a crystal clear reflection of the snow-capped mountains towering the lake. A must stop by if you're visiting Yellowstone National Park!

Yelp
This is a must see to me. It is the biggest lake of the area and serves as a beautiful backdrop. There are many options to see the lake, in my opinion, I liked the views best from West Thumb.

Yelp
Beautiful scenery!!! Love the vegetation and wildlife!! They have done a great job getting everyone back out there after the recent flood.

Yelp
This lake is beautiful from all angles. With the backdrop of the mountains and from some spots even of the Tetons, this lake is the perfect place to stop and take in breathtaking views or have a picnic.

Yelp
Beautiful high altitude alpine lake. Cool water, even in summer. It has many beach areas and over 100 miles of shoreline. I believe they let water craft on the lake.
