On the Grid : Yesterday's News

"Yesterday's News is a little hunk of salvaged paradise on Court St. This place is filled to the brim with vintage furniture, decor and memorabilia items. The best pieces spill onto the sidewalk for passersby to slow down and take a look. Almost everything we've purchased from Yesterday's News has been found when we aren't expecting it as we're walking home from a day at work." - Ghostly Ferns

On the Grid : Antiques and Furniture Store

"Stopping by Park Slope's antiques and furniture store is almost like going to a museum, with a lot of religious art sold by the Prophecies Gallery owner. His antique furniture store is around the corner, on President St off the 5th Ave. The highlight however, is the owner himself, Lenny. Stop by, meet him and hear out his adventurous life stories." - Anna Griniuk

This is a great antique store! A lot of vintage stuff like beautiful mid-century furniture, clothes for men & women, decor items, jewelry, glassware, artwork postcards & other collectibles. The prices are reasonable, lots of options for everyone. Also, they have an amazing inventory! The place is welcoming & everything is well organize. Also the staff are always friendly & helpful! I totally recommend it!

Google
Yesterday’s News is a fun little antique shop to walk in and around and outside of. They seem to have something from every era. It almost feels like a museum and some of the coolest stuff, you’re allowed to buy. The staff is friendly, the shop is bright and clean. Not dusty like you might think. The items are clean and in great condition and they have stuff for all ages. I bought some vintage collectible trading cards because they had some of my favorite nerdy teams available. The prices aren’t too bad. Some stuff might be a little higher than anticipated but I don’t blame the shop, I blame the high rent rates that this shop must pay for so much floor space in this neighborhood. Will definitely stop by again soon!

Yesterday’s news is today’s treasure, or so the saying goes. Definitely come and shop with an open mind: it may have not been on your list, but it probably should go home with you: whether it is a vintage artwork, a colorful plate of glass or a one of a kind dress. The prices are nice here too.

Google
This isn’t just an antique store—it’s a place where every item carries a soul, a memory, and a past waiting to be shared. What truly sets this shop apart are the owners, who are not only incredibly kind and welcoming, but also deeply passionate about what they do. They don’t just sell antiques—they pass on stories. Each piece I’ve purchased has come with context, care, and a sense that I’m not just acquiring a piece of an object, but continuing a legacy.

Google
Any time I’m in the neighborhood I stop by. One of my favorite spots in all of BK! The family who run this place thoughtfully source every single piece and they will help you with so much kindness. Recommend following them on IG so you can see their hauls! You can also dm them to purchase things.

Google
Great selection, neat little vintage store . I first saw in the the street view. Packed with vintage curios, knickknack’s and furniture.I didnt have time to fully explore, but the prices weren't that out of the Manhattan . The variety seemed pretty good, tons if old cigar boxes, wood boxes, ammo boxes, signs, chairs and tables… many gorgeous stuff…

Google
Absolutely stunning and eclectic store with great finds. It is clear that all the items have been curated and collected with care. There were so many beautiful items that I wish would fit in my suitcase :( Cannot recommend more if you're looking for a hidden gem or something special for your home.

Google
I couldn’t find a better antique store in all Brooklyn! As a postcard collector, this place is a paradise! The staff is always friendly, and I always take my headphones off here because the music is wonderful and truly enhances the store’s atmosphere. You will definitely not leave empty-handed!

Yelp
This is a pretty cool antique place. It was fun to look at the items but this place is too pricey for me. There were some furniture pieces that i really liked but when noticing the price , I backed off a little. I do recommend going and perusing if you are by the area. You never know what you may find.

Yelp
Great antique store! It's not super huge, but I still spend a lot of time in here. Good (not huge) selection of clothes but they're all very cool pieces and it's definitely curated. Lots of other cool things throughout the store. Would recommend to any vintage shopper!

Steven P.

Yelp
Poor customer service. When checking out, the clerk/owner decided to raise the price on an item I was buying by over $15 because they claimed it was too low. I'd look elsewhere and support an honest business. I wanted to like this place and would love to support local businesses, but places like this are disappointing. Save your money and buy online. Similar items are about 20-50% cheaper elsewhere. Most stuff here seemed to be new old stock or low quality costume jewelry.
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
This place is definitely interesting. It's the only store of its kind in Carroll Gardens and the surrounding areas. Each day that they're open, the store employees put a large selection of their items out on the sidewalk for potential buyers to peruse. That, alone, looks like so much work. Inside, they have an unimaginable amount of items to look through, as well. It ranges from plastic clothespins in a bowl, to mid century modern furniture, to old vintage dresses, and beyond. The staff can be a little abrasive at times, but I think it comes with the territory of being a really established small business that isn't particularly looking to please; they're just looking to provide. Honestly it adds to the charm of the store. I always stop to look at the vinyl records (they have some baskets of records for $1....amazing quality and value!). This is a really cool place to visit when you're in the neighborhood!

Yelp
It's been many, many years since I visited this store (I think I may have bought a coffee table here many moons ago, but it's a good 30 minutes' stroll away) and it took THE LOCKDOWN to rediscover them. I started following them on Instagram- after noticing their daily posts on their vintage treasures for sale. The prices are always reasonable and the items are always unique. They offer curbside pickup after you pay online. I stopped by this week to pick up a a pair of vintage 80's Monet earrings I bought for $10. I'm not exactly sure when I'll be wearing them in my quarantine life but who doesn't need more costume jewelry from the garish 80's?I happened to spy a cool mid-century planter in the window so I ended up buying that too. I can't wait to check out their shop and vintage goodies IRL when they re-open.

Yelp
Walked in for a weekday visit and saw that the owner has a few Donald Trump items prominently displayed by the register. I ignored it. We don't have to agree on politics. I just want to score some great vintage finds. That said, the way he stared at me while I browsed (it was Omicron and I was wearing a mask, he wasn't) and the two reviews from the people of color on this thread make me think there's something deeper going on here. I would avoid. It's mostly paper ephemera and old war stuff, anyway.

Yelp
Best vintage furniture store in NYC. I just bought my dining room chairs here.

Yelp
This is my go to place. Their variety and constant changing inventory makes me go back time and again. The staff is so friendly I've gotten to know them all. I frequently go into the city and this is on my route home and I'm always finding different and unusual things there. Love ya!

Yelp
Very disappointed with my experience at this store. I purchased an African braided hair band. As I proceeded to browse the store I was followed by a store manager(middle age white male) the whole time. Cute store. Avoid the anxiety of being followed and buy somewhere else or at least buy black.
google avatar

Yelp
There is this strange, but unsurprising phenomenon in NYC antique shops where they charge insane amounts of money for complete bullshit. Not here. Here they just have a lot of great furniture, kitchenware, posters, postcards, jewelry and more to discover. All of it is reasonably priced. And as an added bonus, they have an abundance of old Playboys, which appeals to the 12 year old boy in me.
google avatar

Yelp
I heart you, Yesterday's News! Though I'm never around the area, I am going to have to now because this is quickly turning into my favorite thrift shop. Wondering why? Oh, because the people are nice and not pushy. Plus, they have more than used bowls and charming costume jewelry; they've got vintage knickknacks that will make some squeal and furniture on the cheap side that will make others stop in their tracks to ask how much is for that dusty armchair. Usually the end result being cash thrown down and a happy camper skipping home with their newfound affordable love.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place. Extremely nice and cute antique items for a reasonable price. Got a very cute plant stand (well, I'm making it a plant stand) from here! :) They take all forms of payment and are currently open for business with masks required--if you're wondering.

Yelp
Definitely one of my favorite vintage stores to drop in around the neighborhood. They sell a nice selection of vintage furniture, jewelry (brooches, necklaces, earrings), a small selection of clothing, and general ephemera from the 1940s-1980s. And the prices are definitely reasonable when compared to some of the antique shops up on Atlantic Ave! It's kinda a small store, but packed to the brim with treasures. Somewhat narrow walking area inside the store, so those with claustrophobia need not step in. The stock rotates often (due to the reasonable prices) and new stuff is always flowing in. Say hi to Linda behind the counter--she's super friendly and loves to chitchat about vintage fashions!
google avatar

Tina E.

Yelp
I admit that I only come here for the four for a dollar photos. They are kept in an old wash bin in the back of the store. Today I realized that looking at them is like viewing my own family photos. I have gone through them so many times that I recognize the subjects. This one goes to the beach and that one goes to church. This little boy is a boyscout and his dad is in the military. These people enjoy family picnics and boating. There are also nice furniture items and some eclectic kitchenware. Today I saw 6 collectors plates from my home state of Tennessee. It was strange to see them in Brooklyn and I chose to leave them behind. Cash and carry items are always available outside the store. These are usually wooden chairs, mirrors, end tables and the like. If you enjoy antiques with a little dust and no pretension stop here and give it a whirl.

Yelp
I absolutely love Yesterday's News! I've lived in the neighborhood for about 11 years and over the years have purchased an awesome, mid-century upholstered chair for $60, wonderful, sturdy hardwood oak dining chairs (from a nun's retreat!) for $30 each, a set of cool retro water glasses, vintage wooden crates/boxes, jewelry and other assorted odds and ends. The prices are incredibly good. At an upscale antique store the prices could easily be double (or more). Linda and Craig are staples in the neighborhood and ask me about my life and just make the experience wonderful. Most of the time I'm just walking by and window-shopping. Highly recommend browsing for treasures on a regular basis!

Yelp
I'd bought my first "grown up" piece of furniture here (a sewing cabinet), after years of vagabonding and living in furnished places. But it's not about me, it's about you, and what you can find at this NYC-priced-but-not-BK-Flea-shameful-markup antique shop. It's worth a stroll past to look at the furniture and items they have displayed on the sidewalk: usually pieces like tables, chairs, various houseware, and storage options from the 50s-70s, sourced by the proprietor(s) from estate sales in the tri-state. Inside the shop, there's more furniture (bigger pieces like cabinets), jewelry, household items, and paper goods like cards and stamps. Some great things I've seen but not purchased: typewriters, a school desk with ironworked curlicue sides, a flashy 1970s vanity with a mirrored top, all the better for your extracurriculars. Closed on Mondays and sometimes during rainy or bad weather.

Yelp
LOVE this store! It has great secondhand furniture at awesome prices. Everything is in very good condition. My roommate got a beautiful wooden chest for $140, which is basically the same price you would pay at IKEA for a cheap wood dresser. I got a beautiful side table to go in my living room for only $100. It is in great condition and has so much character! Linda the store clerk is an absolute gem, super helpful and even gave me a hug when I came to pick up my table. I will definitely shop here again soon!

Yelp
Hands down one of the best vintage/antique stores in New York City, the prices are great - they have wonderful finds, the staff is friendly and helpful. I always have a good time shopping here... heck I might make a trip tonight. I would highly recommend anyone visit this store.

Yelp
I have a love hate relationship with this place. i think their merchandise is cool, chabby chic and constantly revolving which is nice. What I have a problem with is their prices. I was looking for a dresser on craigslist and found one that was nice for $10. Unfortunately it was sold. To my surprise, the next day I saw the same dresser for sale at yesterday's news for $300! i understand that they have to make money but greedy is greedy and these people are as greedy as they get. No deals to be found here.

Ali C.

Yelp
I've been in the neighborhood for about 18 years and always like perusing this shop for bric a brac, tzochkies, and oddities. I just wish they didn't tack on an extra charge when you pay with a debit/credit card. I own a small business in Brooklyn, and it's standard that businesses, no matter how small, eat the cost for a paying customer's convenience. This practice is not only illegal, tacky, and passe, it's about as outdated as the register machine they use to ring you up. Be prepared to shop with cash if you don't want the annoyance of taking part in penny pinching.

Yelp
I pass by this antique shop a few times a month on my way to work and yesterday I saw they were selling a vintage produce crate with a blackface image on it. In this racially divided climate when so many in the public eye have come under fire for either wearing or defending blackface, I found this to be highly inappropriate and insensitive. Yes, blackface is a part of American history, but you can choose not to sell items that are offensive to many Americans. And I know African Americans who collect black memorabilia as a way to reclaim the stereotypes, but this is a predominantly white and Italian-American neighborhood. So by having this item visible in plain sight on the street to everyone who passes by, are the owners of this store sending a message that they endorse the sentiment behind blackface that mocks and degrades African Americans? Whatever the rationale, selling such items is in poor taste.
google avatar

Yelp
Jackpot. The prices are super reasonable. In fact I thought they'd be more expensive considering Brooklyn. I found a ton of bedroom furniture I wish I could lug on the plane ride home. Happily picked up a few vintage signs with awesome typography. Only $2 for 5! If I lived in town I'd visit frequently and develop a super dangerous habit.
google avatar

Yelp
If you are looking for something old and classy this may be the place for you to go. From typewriters to record players they have a little bit of everything. Even vintage copies of Playboy!!
google avatar

Susan N.

Yelp
This is probably my very favorite non-clothing vintage store in NYC so far. What I love about it is that even though, it's somewhat curated, you still have to dig a little to find hidden treasures. And when you find things, whether in plain view or hidden, the prices are more than reasonable. Heck, it's on par or even less than what Midwest dealers charge. That should tell you something. As I mentioned, you do have to dig a little. While it is curated, it's also a tiny space and not immaculately curated like a store in the city that would probably charge five times as much for the same pieces. That's part of this store's charm. They've got loads of cute vintage items for around the home... very few antiques (100 years or older), if you're looking for that, specifically. There's tchotchkes and some furniture inside, with the bulk of the furniture being outside. You can also find old metal milk crates and wood soda crates outside. It's like a rustic, industrial vintage paradise out there. The owner is also pretty nice in that gruff-Brooklyn kind of way. Also, extremely knowledgable. They sell old seltzer bottles for $20 - cheaper than anywhere else I've seen - and he was going into this story on how there's only one place in Brooklyn these days that does genuine seltzer refills. Seriously, he knows his stuff. The sad thing on my part is that despite having gone there a handful of times, I have yet to purchase anything from there. But hopefully they'll soon have the few items I'm looking for so I can buy them. This is really a store I want to support.

Yelp
One of the last " PICKERS" spots left . GREAT PRICES and new goods often . The neighborhood wouldn't be the same without this gem on the street .
google avatar

Jeanette E.

Yelp
I was seriously conflicted about writing this review. I mean, this might very well be the last place in Brooklyn where you can still get cheap, secondhand furniture that's in good shape. And every time i go there everything i love is already sold. It was a secret i wasn't sure i wanted to tell. But in the end, i want them to stick around and i want others to have a place where they can get a side table for $30 or an Art Deco style dresser for $150. They've got chairs, tables, wardrobes, odd gadgets, dishes, jewelry, posters, clocks, mirrors--general thrift shop finds. I go out of my way to stop in even if i don't need anything just to see what they've got b/c the prices ensure lots of turnaround, so there's often new stuff and it doesn't stick around long. I'm shocked (shocked!) that this place exists. I wish there were more places like it. P.S. These folks also run Brownstone Treasures, a few blocks away at 220 Court Street. Same great stuff.

Yelp
Great for old photos... I sat there for 2 hours looking through the giant piles. The nice lady gave me a discount when I didn't even ask for one. LOVE

Andrea D.

Yelp
I called looking for something specific which they assured me that they had. I traveled a great distance to buy the item hours later only to be told that they didn't have this item and never did. Awful.
google avatar

Abigail S.

Yelp
Love this store. They have really cool furniture at very fair prices. I've found everything from an antique rocking chair to an old piano bench that serves as a platform for the cats to eat on. Yesterday's News rotates merchandise fairly quickly, so if you see something you really like it's probably smart to buy it right away. The owner is very sweet and will give you a wintergreen LifeSaver if you pop in to look around. What more can you ask for in an antiques store?
google avatar

Judy Y.

Yelp
Sweet antique store full of old things in great quality and reasonably priced. Lots of home goods, some random things and a small clothing section. The couple who runs the shop is very friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Eva R.

Yelp
You know what I love about this place? It's the only decent antiques store I know of in NYC where you can buy cool, old stuff that isn't ridiculously overpriced. They've got new stuff to look at every time I stop in, the people that work there are nice, but they don't harass you too much either. If you see something you like, better snap it up quick! There's pretty fast turnover here.
google avatar

Lucy M.

Yelp
This is the sister store to Brownstone Treasures, which is further north on Court St in Cobble Hill. This location is about twice the size of Brownstone Treasures, though the Cobble Hill location seems to get the more prime furniture pieces as far as I can tell. Like the other location, there is pretty good turnover in the store, and a good variety of pieces. This may not be the place to find that rare Louis 14th dining set, but they have a lot of great looking, very affordable items. It's definitely one of the best priced antique stores I've been in in NY. My favorite are the lovely wooden wardrobes that are actually cheaper than the fiberboard Ikea ones.
google avatar

Sovi P.

Yelp
Love this little antique spot. I love looking at all of the new items that come in or going for a specific piece. They will also tell you everything you need to know about whatever you are purchasing.
google avatar

Yelp
You can find less expensive, higher quality antiques at city flea markets or small town thrift stores. All sales are final at Yesterday's News, so if you realize your antique is in bad shape when you get home, you're out of luck. I purchased a 19.5" x 23" mirror there. It's probably from the '70's. The heavy, wood frame was a bit beat up (like all their wooden furniture), but It was pretty enough for the $50 they were asking. The mirror itself was very dusty since they display their mirrors outside. When I went home and dusted it off, I realized that the mirror had a rusty patch behind it, and the left side was warped. It was also generally dull (the reflective metal behind the glass is wearing away/beginning to rust). In other words, the important part was not worth $50. I carried the mirror back to the store two weeks after I bought it, but the nice woman that worked there said sorry, I couldn't even exchange it. She was nice about it, but we both knew I was getting ripped off. I believe the owner (who is not the lady that works there) has an all-sales-final policy because he knows a lot of his inventory isn't good. That's why I say, unless you're just there to browse, you're really better off at a flea market or small town thrift store.

Peter D.

Yelp
As a small antique dealer myself (from Massachusetts), I'm always on the lookout for neat shops. This place is one of my favorites--a very nice collection of vintage and antiques for the common man. You won't find pretentious $2,500 furniture pieces here; you WILL find a variety of collectible ephemera, small furniture, vintage photos, antique & vintage devices, post cards and more. PLUS terrific nice people and very reasonable prices. Definitely go to this place!!
google avatar

Stay S.

Yelp
This place has a great selection of goods / furniture. Knowing when you really really like something and can find a version of it here is pretty awesome. Not a fan of mass produced particle board - you can find old wood made well enough to last. I have yet to buy a large item but the things i've looked at have been mid- high priced. Considering it's on court street I understand.
google avatar

Gena R.

Yelp
It should be called "Grandma's Basement," because that's what it feels like browsing in here. Incredibly low prices, fun, interesting finds (last time I was there they had a big stack of old rock music fan magazines from the late 60s-early 70s), and the older woman at the counter is always welcoming and friendly. A must for lovers of vintage kitsch.
google avatar

Giovanna A.

Yelp
This place had so much fun to look through! Some items were so old, so vintage, so antique that I didn't think anyone would carry them. They have cards/postcards/magazines from past years and some were even addressed to people. I'm a postcard collector so when I saw all the postcards they had, I was enchanted. I ended up buying two postcards of old Brooklyn, which were really neat. What I liked about the store is every time you thought you were done looking somewhere, you opened a drawer and a whole new world unfolded. It can get overwhelming, so make sure you have enough time to browse. They have some pieces displayed outside of the store, which unfortunately the one I liked was already sold. There were so many items to look at and so little time. Staff was super friendly and knew the neighbors pretty well. I would definitely go back!

Danielle C.

Yelp
I love this place so much that, recently, I have vowed to stop by less frequently for fear that I will buy more jewelry or furniture, neither of which I "need" any more of ("want" is a whole different story). I have bought wall mirrors ($50, $100), 2 etageres ($50, $75), some frames, old photos, a beautiful old level (that every handyman/contractor comments on), and loads of kitchenware, including antique appliances, a handful of old, beautiful bowls, a set of silverware ($40), an antique teapot for gifting ($30) and all these great, old kitchen utensils. I have also bought scads of costume/sterling jewelry (my weakness) to the point that I finally had to buy an old jeweler's work desk from them to use as my jewelry armoire. I have to admit, when I first started passing this place years ago, neither the furniture nor jewelry items they sold seemed to be my style. Either their style has changed or mine has (I'm thinking the latter). Linda, who works at the store on weekends, is the best. You should chat her up when you are in the store. Linda is smart and funny and has led a very interesting life. She would likely be embarrassed if I told you some of her personal accomplishments (though do look for her being quoted in the NYT frequently) so I will just say that I'm blessed to be able to now call her my friend. I miss Browntone Treasures, their sister store (RIP), but am glad this place still exists, (for now). The neighborhood is changing fast, though, so get there before this place turns into a Gap.
google avatar

Elaine M.

Yelp
As everyone else here has said, this seems to be the only nice antiques store in the borough that doesnt seem ridiculously overpriced, which is probably why they don't hang out at the overrated Brooklyn Flea. Glad this place exists.
google avatar

Joey M.

Yelp
If you are looking for some magical relic - whether it be a set of dishes your grandma used to own, some 1960s greeting cards, a faux wood plug-in beer sign, life magazines from WWII, or a coffee table straight out of laverne and shirley - this understated antique store probably has it! A great (and seriously inexpensive) collection. Definitely worth a look & more than definitely worth a purchase.
google avatar

Kathryn H.

Yelp
Yesterday's News is so much fun! I wish I had more time to walk around an explore every box, record, card, and picture. The staff is really friendly. I'll definitely back to explore some more!
google avatar

Christine J.

Yelp
Such a cute find in Williamsburg while my friends and I walked around Court St. There are boxes full of records, shelves full of old Playboy magazines, cabinets full of knick knacks and some cool postcards of Brooklyn back in the day. I really loved all the old photographs of people's weddings and families. I ended up purchasing an old photograph of the Williamsburg Bridge being built. I would definitely come back or visit their other location to purchase more items.

T B.

Yelp
Have been going to this place for years! Their inventory is constantly changing and the prices are very reasonable. Here's the secret: Go on weekends --- that's when Linda is there. She is a pillar of our neighborhood and the nicest lady you will ever meet!

Krystal C.

Yelp
Wonderful selection, great prices! Will return! Closed on Mondays (at least the one Mon I tried to go)...
google avatar

LORI F.

Yelp
Great prices for NYC. They have everything from little nik naks to furniture. Only thing to be aware of is if it is raining they close shop usually since they can't put their access furniture outside. Call before you come. They are friendly and helpful. I'll be back for sure!

Mike E.

Yelp
Best place to go in the Brooklyn for anything vintage. The owner is a awesome guy and very knowledgeable about the products he sells. Their prices are some of the best in the vintage business. I can recommend this place to anyone looking for retro furniture or just some cool with some history to it!

Pia A.

Yelp
A gem. I've gotten everything from great vintage postcards to a VFW trash can to a '30s-era tabletop pinball game, all at a fraction of what other stores would charge. JP, the owner, is awesome. Craig, his friendly employee, is eager to discuss his workout regime. At length.

Holly B.

Yelp
We picked out many items we wanted to buy. Mostly wooden crates for kitchen storage. Went inside to take a peek at a display case. IT WAS JUST WHAT I NEEDED! The man behind the counter was so offensively rude by his words and tone. How was I to know that an imaginary line was drawn between items for sale and items that were off limits. Brooklyn has changed for the better in some cases but not in this particular store. Gonna stick to NYC for special finds.

Yelp
one of my favourite shops i've found in brooklyn! i've had many awesome finds & the prices are awesome. big bin of old maps, tons of old postcards, vintage birthday cards, old photos, amazing furniture, jewelery. every time i go (which is often) they have new furniture.
