I was here with a friend for 2 nights to see the Grampians National Park. Friendly wife and husband that run the hostel. They live on-site with their kids. Their man friend is a very lovely fellow. It was my first time staying in a hostel and I felt very safe there. I have heard a lot of negative things about hostels in general so this place did not have those negatives.
The women bathroom, kitchen, dining room, and bed room were kept clean. Big kitchen with 2 cooking areas, 2 microwaves, 2 refrigerators, plenty of shelving, 4 sinks, and 2 of everything else (e.g. set of plates, set of silverware, pots and pans). They have a reptile room filled with snakes, turtles, etc. for display. In the tv lounge area, there is a Pool table, air hockey table, a huge movie collection, and tons of board games. There is also a smaller tv lounge located near the bathrooms. There is a nearby grocery store (less than a 3 minute drive).
I think their shared rooms have 3 beds. I slept in a 3-bed dorm. It remains quiet during the night. The beds are comfortable to sleep on. There are lockers and a fan in the rooms. Guests leave in the morning usually by 10 am so the hostel stays pretty quiet and empty until the late afternoon. The reception has very limited trading hours. I did notice that people in groups/families tend to stick with their groups and had little to no interaction with others besides greeting one another.
You will likely see a mob of emus and troops of kangaroos adjacent to the hostel in the morning/afternoon. Never saw such animals in my life so it was pretty cool to see them up close and in action. They also have chickens walking around their surroundings looking for food.
I highly recommend this hostel for a stay within Halls Gap. No major complaints.
