Nestled in a charming Victorian house with lush grounds, this YHA hostel offers cozy dorms and relaxing lounges, perfect for walkers and families alike.
This is typical YHA grand building with enthusiastic helpful staff. Lady checking us in really helpful as we were hiked in and wanted a rest day so we could also see Grasmere. She made an effort to juggle stuff so we could. Pizza were really nice. Place clean and tidy. Tom checking on guests very pleasant. YHA does have camping but only limited to 5 pitches. Walking tents could get more, so not sure on how much discretion. Overall lovely stay.

Great stay at YHA Grasmere. Check in was great, easy and friendly. The hostel is a good size, large sitting room and restaurant area and space to sit outside. The self service kitchen was very small but clean and adequate. ||Stayed for two nights in a two bed room. There were plenty of clean toilets and showers just outside our room. ||We ordered food, pizzas were large and yummy and priced well at £10.49. Served hot with friendly service. ||The hostel is only about 3 mins walk to the centre of the village of Grasmere. Plenty of cafes, restaurants, pubs and shops, including a co-op express open until 10pm. ||I would highly recommend this YHA.

We arrived to Grasmere after a shortish hike from Ambleside and were let in slightly early which was nice. The location was very nice if a bit sheltered from any great views by the trees. Sadly, our room overlooked the car park rather than the forested areas and therefore was a bit sad in that department. The food was tasty and service was fast, the rooms were clean but annoyingly had chargers above the bed with no where to put your phone while it charges, however this correlates with most YHA. All in all, for a YHA it was very nice! Would recommend and probably will come again.

We have stayed at Grasmere YHA before and at many YHA Hostels over a few decades, so regular customers of the YHA.
I'd booked a Saturday night at Grasmere , £36 (£40 less member Discount, dynamic pricing, as can be half that,) and I was most looking forward to staying again, but sadly I had to cancel, at short notice, due to illness.
No refund.
YHA HQ suggested that I claim on my travel insurance. No reply from the Hostel.
As YHA HQ knows, the excess on many a holiday insurance policy is far more than a night's hostel accommodation.
Every cloud, I hadn't pre booked breakfast, as I often do, else it looks like I would have lost that money too.
Disappointing that a 'credit note' or similar can't be issued for a future stay.
C'est la vie!
I hope to say at this Hostel and others later this year.

Having stayed in a number of YHAs over the past 18 months, Butharlyp Howe remains one of the best with a fantastic location in a beautiful building. The staff were all very friendly, the rooms clean and comfortable and the food was decent. Some excellent weather was also a massive bonus for a weekend at the Lakes. |Perhaps I am highlighting my ignorance on these matters but I feel that the total cost of £215 for two nights in a 4 bed dorm with no en suite and breakfast on one morning was just about on the right side of affordable for us, thanks to 15% off (5% young persons/ 10% members). Looking ahead for future weekends, it would be over £200 for the Saturday night on its own, which seems a lot for budget accommodation. I worry that YHA are pricing out families at their current weekend rates and, with our 2 children being the only under 18s at the hostel during the weekend, perhaps that is already happening and seems counter to their mission. |Overall we had a brilliant stay at a fantastic hostel, but unless we can manage a night midweek when it is significantly cheaper, weekend stays might well be beyond our budget.

Lovely hostel in a wonderful location. The only downside was the too small self catering facilities on this visit. Family friendly with lovely lounges and workspace. Easy to walk from the hostel to many great spots.

Absolutely love it here. It’s such a good location for loads of walks, swims or just relaxing. |The staff are friendly. It’s clean. There’s lots of facilities. They’re obviously improving things too with more storage for self catering. |We stayed a night camping and a night in the dorm room. Ideal location for a walk up to easedale tarn or into abide via rydal. ||Of course will be back again very soon.

Experienced a great weekend in Grasmere, easy to find, easy to park and our room with 3 bunks was all the you expect from the YHA. We paid for a full breakfast both mornings and the service and food were spot on.
