Absolutely loved my stay at YHA Melbourne Central. The location is perfect, right in the heart of the city with easy access to public transport, great cafes, and all the main attractions. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, which made it easy to meet other travellers. The staff were genuinely helpful and always happy to share local tips. The rooftop area was one of my favourite spots, ideal for unwinding or enjoying the city views. Everything was clean, secure, and well looked after. I’ll definitely be coming back next time I’m in Melbourne.

One of the best and friendliest hostels in Melbourne. The overnight staff Brock and Lucki are super nice and accommodating. I can definitely recommend :) i will definitely come back!

I have booked a single room in yha melbourne. It was nothing like Sydney YHAs I booked twice before. Why booking a hotel is better over YHA single room: 1. Yha could not accommodate even a 15 mins early checkin, with most hotels it is almost always possible for an early checkin. 2. Hotels provide basic toiletries. 3. Yha single room was absolutely not upto expectation. The lighting was poor and depressing, the carpet had a huge white stain, outsiders are not allowed into the rooms strictly, the noise coming into the building is horribly loud. 4. The price of a single room is almost nearly the same as a hotel room. 5. The common bathrooms are horrible and who applies a tap validation on a bathroom door. So if u forgot to take ur card or phone to bathroom, you cannot enter. So I entered the physically disabled bathroom and there the nightmare of one solitary plastic hook to hang clothes, ONE. Of everything being exhausted and requesting for an early booking and being denied tops it all. I wish I can upload the pics of the room I took here. But there is no option to do that here.

This hostel is very clean and well-maintained. The rooms and bathrooms are spotless, and the common areas are tidy and comfortable. Staff are friendly and helpful. A great stay overall—highly recommended for travelers who value cleanliness!

Reception staff were lovely. I stayed in a 4 bed female only room, it was a decent size, the bedding itself was nice and warm but the mattress was very well used which wasn't the most comfortable - massive sag/dent in the middle. I didn't use the kitchen, the continental breakfast feels slightly overpriced for what it offers but was still quite tasty. Bathroom facilities were very clean and in decent enough shape, each shower or toilet cubicle gives you lots of privacy. Didn't use any of the other facilities but overall a very clean place, felt safe. The trains passing nearby are quite loud - I'd recommend light sleepers bring earplugs!! The other guests were always very respectful of noise levels especially of an evening/morning.

Good Day

Very convenient location, close to the train and parking lot, about 10 minutes away。But the room I booked is the rooftop room,There are only two rooms where you can chat and barbecue with friends or lovers outside the room at night. After 10:00pm, only those staying on the top floor can go outside. After walking in the day, you can chat at night. Melbourne night view。

YHA Melbourne|Pros|1. Well located near food and groceries|2. Good kitchen, well equipped with pans, cutlery and fridges.|3. Common Area (level 0) has good vibes, most people seem to hang out here|4. Staff are helpful|5. Water pressure in the showers is good||Cons|1. Room assigned to us was very small (compared to other YHAs)|2. Can hear train sounds from the room throughout the night|3. Beds are squeaky so if you or your roommates are tossing/turning on it, they make a lot of noise|4. The laundry facilities could use improvement. The power resets at 10pm, which means if a cycle is running, it will pause until someone manually restarts it. Even when uninterrupted, our clothes didn’t dry fully. I was also a bit confused when a staff member reassured me I was “not in trouble” — I hadn’t done anything wrong, just reported an issue with the machine. I was also confused when this staff member said that they “don’t allow” people to do laundry after 10pm when we weren’t made aware of any such rule during check in, and no such rule actually existed… |5. we were given a clothes stand that was put in front of the heater. we didn’t think much of it. but on day3 of us living there an alarm went off in our room and we were told it was because the metal clothes stand got too hot…|6. sometimes there isn’t any hot water in the showers at night. hot water is a little bit inconsistent||For the cons, yes you can say that it’s just a youth hostel thing, but for the same company Youth Hostel Australia, YHA Sydney harbour and YHA Melbourne have wildly different standards. The Sydney harbour one was a dream to be at.

Don’t stay here!! The hostel is an old building with poor sound insulation and is situated right next to a major train line. I didn’t sleep both nights as it was soooooooo loud. The sound of the trains could even be heard through my ear plugs. The rooms themselves were also very cold in winter and it was hard to stay warm.

Yelp
I stayed here for 2 nights at the end of my Australia trip and was impressed by the location. I was in a triple room with a single bed and bunkbeds. Lots of space and plugs available. Storage is underbed and secured by using your own padlock. There is wifi and you can buy daily, 3 days or 7 day vouchers. The reception desk staff were friendly and welcoming and happy to help me out with buying bus vouchers for my airport transfer. There isnt that many common areas so i feel it would be hard to really meet people if you were there for a long period of time. Downstairs there is a 7/11 and there is a few food places around to either eat in or takeaway. The tram stops right outside and southern cross statiom is just around the corner. Showers were clean and spacious cubicles and i didnt have to wait very long for one. Overall it was a good base for a few days and i would stay here again.

Yelp
I was somewhat underwhelmed with Melbourne Central YHA given the central location in the city. The location was really good as far as exploring the city of Melbourne, however this hostel is organized in a very strange way! There are no good common areas to meet people and if you're expecting a nice shared kitchen you will be disappointed. The kitchen can fit maybe 5-10 people and there are always people trying to cook in the limited small kitchen. I stayed on the first level and the bathrooms were quite small with only 2 showers and toilets? If I come back to Melbourne I'm staying somewhere else.

Yelp
Good location. Next to Southern Cross Train station. The arrival destination for Sky bus from Melbourne airport. 4 to share room on 3rd floor. 2 bunk beds. Shared toilets and showers. Amenities are clean. Room had smell of unclean waste bin though. Alot of clutter around the room. Did not seem to be enough room locker space for other residents in the room. Luckily there was lockers for rent downstairs. $7 per day for a small locker. Add that to the $44 per day for the 4share bedroom.

Yelp
A nice hostel that is located in walking distance to the attractions in CBD. The staff is nice, and the main floor had a great atmosphere. My friend and I stayed here for 3 nights in a 3-bed all female dorm. The beds and room appliances were a little outdated, and the outlets were far away from the beds, making it hard for us to charge our phones right next to us in bed (which would've been useful since we had alarms programmed to wake us up in the mornings). Another downside is that there is only one bathroom for the whole floor, and in the bathroom, there are only 2 shower and 2 toilet stalls. The toilet paper ran out pretty frequently, and the bathrooms got crowded pretty fast. A nice feature of the bathrooms, however, was that it was pretty modernized, compared to the dorms. Overall, this is a decent place to sleep for the night if you're out exploring Melbourne during the day, but don't expect too much in terms of the amenities.

Yelp
Nice and clean hostel. Also very central location. Only issues is that the recharge power is in an inconvenient spot. So if you want to charge your phone overnight and set an alarm it might be hard to turn it off. Just be aware of this before you do so. Also be aware that Internet is pay per use (so bring your own wireless hotspot or fork out), and the common socializing areas are quite small. But still a great place if you're just concerned with a place to sleep for the night if you want to be in the CBD area (cheaper than most CBD AirBNBs at this time of writing).

Yelp
The location is great for meandering about town or heading down to St Kilda. It's very close to Southern Cross Station. There is only one elevator, which is incredibly hard to catch. As healthy as it is to take the stairs, sometimes you don't want to climb up four floors, especially if you have 25kg worth of luggage. THIS YHA IS NOT HANDICAP FRIENDLY. There was a smoke alarm and we had to evacuate, and a guy on the first floor got into an argument with staff because he wasn't supposed to use the elevator, but couldn't go down the stairs... The staff is friendly and helpful. However, I find the rambling on the intercom every morning to be really unprofessional and annoying. Yes, we know check out is at 10. I don't particularly want to be woken up after a late night by someone talking talking talking over the crackling PA system. The bathrooms. You've got 2 showers and two stalls (per floor), plus a private bathroom/shower combo for the private rooms up-front. It's not exactly ideal when you have ~20 rooms on floor. If one thing was fixed, another was no longer working. As an add on, and this is very specific to this period... the construction both inside and outside the hostel were insupportable. It starts early, and whether it's the rattling seeping in through the window (which you should keep open because it gets stuffy) or the music by the construction workers indoors... needless to say, sleep was not quite replenishing. I think once this hostel is finally fixed, with additional common areas that it severely lacks, it will be pleasant. That said, I found it very darkly painted and stuffy. Also, having to use your key three times to get into your room (elevator, room area, room door) is excessive. Especially when on the first floor you don't need to. First floor also has the only laundry room, which is often in use by cleaning staff. I hope they put another on in on another floor. Last, but not least, Freddy is one of the coolest people on staff. He was accommodating, and sought to put together activities, which, I hope, in time will catch on more. [ I was here a long time, which I think is why I noticed so many things. For a short stay though, I think this place is ideal. ]
