OUR FAVOURITE HOSTEL! We have stayed at over 50 different hostels in the UK, Denmark, Germany, France, USA and Canada and The Sill tops the list. It is modern, clean, WARM and well run - a wonderful place to stay in the AMAZING Northumbrian landscape.||We had a 4 bed private en-suite room which was very comfortable. Typical YHA mattresses and bedding but all on the newer side and everything spotlessly clean. The shower in the room was nice to have with good water pressure. Bring your own towel or rent from the front desk.||We cooked all our own meals and found the self-catering kitchen clean, spacious and well stocked. There is plenty of fridge and shelf storage space.||Lee and his team are the most relaxed, friendly yet competent staff we have come across recently and the customer service standard is very high. There are so many nice touches in this hostel. The poetry artworks in the common room are stunning and we had a blast doing the eagle treasure hunt activity for ‘kids of all ages.’||It’s an ideal base from which to explore the many Roman ruins scattered around this area. We especially love the AD122 bus service that travels from Hexham to Greenhead, stopping at many of the major sites, including right outside the door of this hostel.||From the hostel door, you can walk 10 minutes and be on Hadrian’s Wall and the pathway that travels the length of it. Sycamore Gap is only 1.4 miles away turning east on the trail. The hostel staff have put together printed walking guides that include OS map segments and details of each trail.||The Sill Visitor Centre is housed in the same building and definitely worth a look (free entry). Hexham is a very cute nearby town which is also worth at least a half day trip. It was cloudy when we were there but we’ve heard the telescope comes out at the Twice Brewed pub next door and we’ll definitely be back for that!||There is something magical about this place. We love it and we’ll definitely be back for more.||10 out of 10 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Booked an ensuite room for an overnight stay to break a long car trip. The only slight negative was not being able to check in till about 4:30 pm. Room was basic but v clean and shower worked well. Other facilities including the cooked breakfast were good. I had prebooked a table at the pub next door for dinner. ||The location is great for walking, cycling and visiting the Roman sites nearby. Vindolanda was fascinating.

Visited the sill this November with my work colleagues. We had the place to ourselves! The heated floor kept my toes toasty and the stacked hostel warden organized some fun activities for us to do in the evening. We went to the local pub and had a fantastic night out star gazing in the dark skies aria. The views of Jupiter gave me a feeling of insignificance that comforted me. Lee and Phill were very friendly at the hostel. The place was spotless and I would recommend a trip here in the winter to contemplate the universe and our place in it. 10/10

Superb facilities, stayed whilst visiting Vindolanda with 6 year old. Room was fantastically clean and quiet. The bed was comfortable enough but it seems we are a family of princes/ses only happy in our own beds, I was glad to bring my own pillow though as they were a bit firm.|The hostel is clean, kitchen clean and well run (food stickers! Our 2nd YHA this year and the last was not a patch). |We ate at the YHA for one evening meal which was great, and again superior to what we got at our previous YHA stay. In the evening they had a great selection of board games which we enjoyed. |It’s a great spot for exploring, we took the recommendation of one walk to Windshields Crag, and enjoyed a meal at the Twice Brewed Inn. Would definitely stay again.

Absolutely amazing staying at The Sill! I would highly recommend this brilliant youth hostel to anyone of any age. The staff were kind, helpful and friendly. The all you can eat breakfast was excellent, with vegetarian and vegan choices available. Our room was spotlessly clean with comfortable beds, great views and the private en suite shower and toilet were especially appreciated. The Sill is situated for great walks and the Twice Brewed Pub ( next door) has an excellent restaurant if you want to eat dinner outside of The Sill.|There were four of us staying at The Sill and we all agreed it was one of the best experience we have had. Thank you to The Sill, Lee and Anna for making our stay so special.

Excellent hostel, we paid £35 for an ensuite room for two which was spacious and clean with a great shower. The staff were lovely and helpful, we also had an evening meal where we received a better service than I've experienced in most restaurants. The continental breakfast was also good with the highlight being the homemade yoghurt and fruit compote. Would highly recommend and will definitely stay again if the opportunity arises!

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights while walking The Hadrian’s Wall Path. This is a new Youth Hostel with excellent facilities. We had a clean and comfortable ensuite room for two – as good as many hotels. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Dinner was just the job after a day’s walking and cooked breakfast set you up for the next day. The AD122 bus stops in the car park just outside the door so it is possible to use this for 2 or 3 days walking ‘The Wall’ from here.
