New Zealand Road Trip Itinerary: 2-4 Weeks (Updated 2025)

"I stayed at Juno Hall near the glowworm caves and enjoyed the on-site swimming pool and tennis court, a large kitchen, and an outdoor grill for barbecuing, which made it a convenient base for exploring Waitomo." - Matthew Kepnes

The 7 Best Hostels in New Zealand (2025 Edition)

"Clean and well-kept, this hostel is ideally located near the glow worm caves and even has a pool and tennis court on-site. There’s a large, well-kept kitchen and an outdoor grill for barbecuing, the staff are welcoming and ensure a comfortable stay, and it’s super affordable — just note the mattresses aren’t that thick (beds aren’t super comfy) and there are no reading lights or individual sockets." - Matthew Kepnes

We didn’t stay at this accommodation but we did visit after our trip with Spellbound. Very generous to allow us to come bottle feed the lambs, feed Snowdrop, and meet the pigs. It was a highlight of our trip and we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to come visit. Premises were clean and organized. Would imagine a stay here would have been very wonderful. Unfortunately we already had a paid reservation prior to our arrival in the Waitomo area. Amazing experience to have visited and would recommend a stay!

Offers comfortable beds and a well-equipped kitchen, complete with all the utensils, a fridge, and a freezer. The cozy lounge area features a fireplace, perfect for relaxing, and is stocked with a great selection of board games, books, and movies. You can also make use of the on-site tennis courts with rackets provided. While the pool was closed for the season, it looks like a lovely spot for warmer months. Dave is a great host that knows nearly everything going on in the area. He's a good chat and quiet a character (Ask him about his time in the navy). His dog, George, and lamb, (I think named) Le Pew, are super cute.

The staff here was so lovely and welcoming and made our stay one to remember. The facilities were clean the beds were comfortable. There were also bonus pigs, lambs and a deer who we got to feed which was a lot of fun. The YHA was also in a great location being only a 5 minute drive away from the glow worm caves

The place is absolutely spotless. Lovely setting right across the road from legendary black water rafting and surrounded by animals including George the cutest dog who belongs to the very friendly and helpful care taker. Recommend

We just stayed for one night as we wanted to do the glowworm cave ( meeting point for the activity is just down the road) but it was lovely and we got the chance to feed baby sheeps. Kitchen has everything you need, everything is clean and the living room is very cosy ( got boardgames, DVDs, books). The lady at the reception was friendly and helpful. Would definitely go back there.

Fantastic place to stay, excellent value. Generously equipped. Family friendly (we stayed in our campervan), but lots of activities for little ones including feeding the lambs. Fantastic kitchen facilities. Great host. Loved the cosy wood fire.

Very cozy common area, kitchen and bathroom are very clean and well equiped and there is lots of charging points for caravans. Also there are lots of cute animals, lambs, pigs, horses and a lovely dog named George :) 100% recommend

We had a motor home but welcomed to use the very well equipped kitchen and the lounge which felt like you were at home - comfy couches, roaring log burner, books games tv. It’s winter so it was only occupied by two other groups. Reception very helpful and friendly. What I would call a wee gem and definitely worth staying
