I loved staying here, even though going up the 199 steps with luggage can be challenging, it's really worth it. Most atmospheric location in Whitby right next to the Abbey. The staff are really helpful and welcoming, they even give you a free ticket to the Abbey. Bedroom was big with two windows and bedding and rest of facilities were clean. The building is a sort of big old house with lots of common spaces, reading room, kitchen... I loved it.

This is up there as one of the best youth hostels that the YHA has. Although when I stayed work was being done and the building was a bit quiet this building is incredible, if you are a fan of Dracula and the mythos this is a perfect pace to stay! Right by the Abbey and near the church, graves and the steps down to Whitby central this location provides the windswept spooky factor with STUNNING views. I will stay here again because this is a gem in YHA portfolio of locations.

Called in for Coffee today. Staff were really nice and friendly. The cakes looked amazing but we were put off because there were 3 chaps working there dealing with the food. 2 had long hair and 3 of them had long beards, but not a hair net in sight. We didn’t want to risk it. Sorry.

Good value but basic. £150 for a simple ensuite room. No room furniture apart from the bunk beds. I wish the so-called hot water was actually hot. I would say it is about 35°.Centigrade. I think to avoid legionella disease it needs to be at least 65°C? So be careful not to drink any of the tepid water. Bring your own towel (there’s no towel rai) and photo ID, a copy on your phone will do.

We stayed for two nights in an ensuite room, the room was clean and the shower was hot. Parking is in the courtyard outside which you have to drive through the stone arches to get to. There is also an overflow carpark before you enter the grounds.|As for the location, what a stunning place in fabulous surroundings.|The hostel is right at the top of the 199 steps, which means if you are able to, it's a quick way into and from town. We did it a few times and it was for us really convenient.|The cafe looked amazing and the tables outside have a fantastic view.|Another plus is the brewery across from the yha grounds, great beers and wood fired pizza.|You are also ideally based for the 6:5 mile walk to Robin Hoods Bay.|We walked there and took the bus back.|The yha suited our needs well and was the perfect spot for our trip.

I came as visiting the Abbey like most people. The cafe offers amazing views if sat outside. It is well worth a visit but coffee is out of a machine and service is okay. The menu is basic and well priced. If you want basic food and somewhere to stay close to Whitby they I would recommend

Booked a family room with private bathroom As soon as opened door to toilet and shower the smell was disgusting actually made me feel|Sick how they can get away with bathroom s with no ventilation is beyond me! The beds were okay but the rubber foam|Mattress made a noise every time you move! We had a cold drink in the outdoor area and so glad we bought them in the cafe/bar as the young lad serving from the out door sat picking his nose when reading his book for a good five minutes wiping it on his trousers so we never ate or drank in there again! We tried to check out at 9am a young man came in never spoke once or even acknowledged we were there he went behind the reception desk then appeared again with a couple signs saying hand room cards in to cafe and wondered off again! All in all don’t think was worth the £245 for 2 nights only good thing is the view!

Cafe & continental breakfast fine. Accommodation terrible & very expensive for a family of 4. (2 adults, 2 children.) £200 for one night! And that included a 'Hotdeal' discount of £50. Rubber covered mattresses that made you sweat, noisy, poor sleep. Room very basic. En suite bathroom, also very utilitarian & rusty metal fittings. Curtains hanging off the rails in the lounge. Community kitchen smelt & again very basic. A very uncomfortable & poor show Whitby YH! My grandsons were not impressed by their first experience of youth hostelling which was partly the purpose of our visit.

Yelp
I would have given this place a fraction of a star or no stars if I could have. Avoid this place at all cost!!! I checked in, found they lied to me all this time when they said Wi-Fi throughout; I was told to get the Wi-Fi, sign up to the Cloud (sign up and give Sky marketing all my info, I expect emails and cold calls from Sky and anyone Sky sells that data to, now); The Wi-Fi worked, in the municipal TV room - the only place it worked. As for up in my room, no signal, no internet, nothing. As for the municipal TV room, the TV in there was meant to be Freeview but couldn't get a signal, so the 1 TV for everybody didn't work, so YHA provided a DVD player and a modest selection of DVDs; back to the main issue, I was assured Wi-Fi covered the entire building after booking upon finding out that the rooms don't have TVs in them; that claim was a bald-faced lie, what does this place expect the solo traveler to do in this day and age all night, sit alone with their thoughts, f' that! I am currently in the process of a full refund because I could not use the room I booked; I checked out, told them why, and am waiting for the outcome of if I get a full refund or if I have to sue the YHA for legal costs and the cost of the room which was the same price as a competent hotel in Whitby I ended up using that I should have used for this night all along, so I will update this review pending the outcome of the refund they owe me. The location isn't for those with vertigo or agoraphobia either, because it's on a cliff at the top of the famous 199 Steps; it gets windy up there, the sky is above you, the sea is there and you could see for miles, and it's high up. I was recommended this place by 2 idiots on YouTube on a channel called Travel Beans who seem to be traveling around England using YHAs all the time so are probably in the pay of the YHA, Travel Beans are idiots though, they spoke of a Full Yorkshire Breakfast too at a cafe in Whitby but failed hard when they didn't bother or care to share or divulge the information on which place in Whitby it was, I myself had to do my own detective work to figure out what place it was, so I should have known any business Travel Beans do recommend would be a ripoff and a con and a lie. This is the offending video that suckered me into this place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn8TvhwEguM
