Just got back from a fantastic short break at Whitby. The location of this hostel is phenomenal. We had a private, en suite room and chose to add breakfast each morning, we also managed to get parked in the hostels car park. For all of this we paid only £24 each per night. The breakfast was fantastic - freshly cooked to order and there was also cereals, pastries, toast, fruit, juices and teas and coffee to help yourself to as you please. We must give a special shout out to Tom who worked the bar both nights we visited - excellent, friendly customer service. Yes the rooms are basic but ours was very clean and perfect for what we needed it for. The only slight negative we had were doors slamming which shook our beds each time, and last night this happened constantly for nearly 2 hours. I understand, however, that this is an old building and it wouldn't stop us from coming back, I'll just pack ear plugs next time!

Geeta for overnight stay. The hostel gave us complimentary entry to the whitby abbey which made this a great value deal. We did not know that, so we were quite happy with it. The room was okay, with decent heating. It faced the parking lot, so not the best view. The cafe and common areas are amazing.

Got an 8 dormitory to ourselves which was unique. Very spacious and cozy for just the two of us. However, very cold, no heating and a window rattling all night which kept us awake all night. Upstairs dormitory above us accommodated a heard of elephants and children running round and screaming up until 9:30pm which was also annoying. |The building itself being 500 years old was showing its age in areas but a whole it was pleasant and kept very clean and tidy. Staff was accommodating and helpful. |Upon arrival, the building itself was strange to find leading through a small archway behind the Whitby Abbey museum. But eventually found our way once ringing YH customer services for directions. But this was our first stay. Overall experience was good for price however experiencing the above made it no so great.

Perched on top of the hill just a few yards from Whitby Abbey and a few yards from the 199 steps leading into whitby town centre. As well as this it's only a few yards off the Cleveland way. Amazing. Must visit. Very well priced and good food options for breakfast and evening meals.

Warnings:|- Walking up the 199 steps from the middle of Whitby to the hostel, with a week's worth of clothes in a rucksack, isn't easy! (but absolutely doable!)|- climbing up stairs to a top floor dorm, with rucksack, having just walked up the 199 steps in order to check in, was a little hard work. ||Having said those warnings, it was aboslutely worth it. We had:|- Comfy beds|- Comfy enough space in dorms for occupants & belongings|- Clean bathrooms|- the option of buying meals from the cafe/restaraunt if we wanted, with a reasonable menu.|- the self catering kitchen was decent enough. We've stayed at places wiith slightly better equipped self cater kitchens, however this one was absolutely fine. ||Views out of the windows depends on what side of the building you end up on - dorm M8 has windows both sides; one side you can see out over Whitby, the other over the hostel car park into the back of the Abbey museum but you can just about see the edge of the Abbey ruins.||We did get offered, and took up, the offer of vouchers for a free visit to the Abbey (literally next door) which we otherwise wouldn't have paid to get in to with not being English Heritage members.

YHA Whitby was such a lovely experience. The check in process easy and smooth. Always their staff friendly and helpful, offering the best information. The private rooms are spacious, bunk beds comfortable, communal areas nice. Self catering is very well equipped, maintained, and very clean.

Great place in a beautiful setting at the top of Whitby. The rooms are basic as you’d expect, but I was a solo guest and had a massive private room with three bunk beds to choose from.

Absolute gem of a place! Our youngest had previously been here on a residential trip with his school and really wanted us to go too. So on his recommendation we booked. We really weren't disappointed. Yes, the rooms are basic, but it's a Youth Hostel. They were clean though and the facilities in the hostel, like the cafe, living rooms etc are great too. It's right next to the Abbey and is in a great location for getting to the town centre. My only gripe would be that we had paid for tickets to the Abbey in advance of our visit, and once we checked in at the hostel we were told that tickets to the attraction were included in the price of our stay! Therefore, I think people should be made aware on booking or advertised as such on their website to save people wasting money on purchasing unrequited tickets.

Yelp
I would have given this place a fraction of a star or no stars if I could have. Avoid this place at all cost!!! I checked in, found they lied to me all this time when they said Wi-Fi throughout; I was told to get the Wi-Fi, sign up to the Cloud (sign up and give Sky marketing all my info, I expect emails and cold calls from Sky and anyone Sky sells that data to, now); The Wi-Fi worked, in the municipal TV room - the only place it worked. As for up in my room, no signal, no internet, nothing. As for the municipal TV room, the TV in there was meant to be Freeview but couldn't get a signal, so the 1 TV for everybody didn't work, so YHA provided a DVD player and a modest selection of DVDs; back to the main issue, I was assured Wi-Fi covered the entire building after booking upon finding out that the rooms don't have TVs in them; that claim was a bald-faced lie, what does this place expect the solo traveler to do in this day and age all night, sit alone with their thoughts, f' that! I am currently in the process of a full refund because I could not use the room I booked; I checked out, told them why, and am waiting for the outcome of if I get a full refund or if I have to sue the YHA for legal costs and the cost of the room which was the same price as a competent hotel in Whitby I ended up using that I should have used for this night all along, so I will update this review pending the outcome of the refund they owe me. The location isn't for those with vertigo or agoraphobia either, because it's on a cliff at the top of the famous 199 Steps; it gets windy up there, the sky is above you, the sea is there and you could see for miles, and it's high up. I was recommended this place by 2 idiots on YouTube on a channel called Travel Beans who seem to be traveling around England using YHAs all the time so are probably in the pay of the YHA, Travel Beans are idiots though, they spoke of a Full Yorkshire Breakfast too at a cafe in Whitby but failed hard when they didn't bother or care to share or divulge the information on which place in Whitby it was, I myself had to do my own detective work to figure out what place it was, so I should have known any business Travel Beans do recommend would be a ripoff and a con and a lie. This is the offending video that suckered me into this place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn8TvhwEguM
