I came as visiting the Abbey like most people. The cafe offers amazing views if sat outside. It is well worth a visit but coffee is out of a machine and service is okay. The menu is basic and well priced. If you want basic food and somewhere to stay close to Whitby they I would recommend

The cafe, food & staff were really good & competitively priced & I would recommend. The accommodation however was overpriced & poor. Shabby, very basic & horrible sweaty rubber mattresses. Also very noisy through the night. Poor sleep. I hoped to show my grandsons the opportunities afforded by YHA. They were not impressed & we won't be back for more Whitby. You'll have to do better for £200 a night!

Stayed here recently so my wife could attend a dance competition at the Whitby Pavillion. Family of 4, 3 adults and 1 child. On arrival there was no parking directly outside so we were advised to park in the disabled bays just inside the gatehouse (they were empty, moved the car to an empty space outside the hostel the following morning after some guests had presumably checked out), The outer entrance archway is quite tight especially when the abbey is open and they've got a barrier up just outside the gatehouse. Check in was easy and friendly, surprised to get a free entry ticket for the abbey which we used on our last day before heading home. Given room 2 which was big, clean and overlooked the abbey. The building is old and a little dated in places but we actually like it that way. Had a meal in the cafe/restaurant, reasonably priced and good quality. Had breakfast on both mornings as well and this was also good value with good quality food and an excellent selection. We've stayed in Youth Hostels before so we'd also brought a pre-prepared meal which we cooked in the self catering kitchen which was busy but everyone took their turn and it was left clean and tidy by all who used it. Youth hostels may not be everyone's cup of tea but they're usually well located, reasonably priced and give you the flexibility to travel in larger groups and cater for yourself while staying. All the staff we encountered during our stay were friendly and helpful. I've looked at this hostel on numerous previous occasions but it has usually been fully booked so I am pleased we were able to stay this time and would probably stay again in the future.

Fantastic place to stay, been years since I stayed in YHA they have improved massively. Friendly helpful staff and what a fantastic location, views and setting are just stunning. |6 of us travelled on bikes we were welcomed and the clean tidy rooms did just what we needed.

We were met by the most welcoming and accommodating team, who did their best to make our group's stay memorable. The conservatory is propably Whitby's best kept secret. All in all it's impressive how such a large place can be administered with only a handfull of staff, who are amazing at being in chage of reception, café, classrooms and being friendly in spite of the demanding work they have. Thank you all for being such great hosts!

The rooms were excellent sizes and very convenient although there was a major issue with the radiator as it started to leak oil all over the floor, the beds nearly broke and we got told to run across the hall way to have a shower.the food for breakfast was extremely good however the tea wasn’t as great. We faced a white plain wall sat on a bench, sort of like a prison the food wasn’t the greatest but it could have been worse.altogether I would say it’s very pricey for what your given no I wouldn’t go again, maybe it was a one of But I would not recommend

Lovely little cafe with some great views out over Whitby. The food was well priced too. I had the vegetarian loaded fries, delicious! And my partner had just the normal fries and had a good amount. Would definitely go again next time we climb the steps!

Incredible location. Couldn’t ask for more. Situated pretty much in the grounds of Whitby abbey with incredible views over the town. Just a few minutes walk from a lovely brewery and a short walk into town via the 199 steps. Parking on site. Friendly and helpful staff. Free ticket to the abbey included. Incredible value. Couldn’t rate it highly enough for what we paid!

Yelp
I would have given this place a fraction of a star or no stars if I could have. Avoid this place at all cost!!! I checked in, found they lied to me all this time when they said Wi-Fi throughout; I was told to get the Wi-Fi, sign up to the Cloud (sign up and give Sky marketing all my info, I expect emails and cold calls from Sky and anyone Sky sells that data to, now); The Wi-Fi worked, in the municipal TV room - the only place it worked. As for up in my room, no signal, no internet, nothing. As for the municipal TV room, the TV in there was meant to be Freeview but couldn't get a signal, so the 1 TV for everybody didn't work, so YHA provided a DVD player and a modest selection of DVDs; back to the main issue, I was assured Wi-Fi covered the entire building after booking upon finding out that the rooms don't have TVs in them; that claim was a bald-faced lie, what does this place expect the solo traveler to do in this day and age all night, sit alone with their thoughts, f' that! I am currently in the process of a full refund because I could not use the room I booked; I checked out, told them why, and am waiting for the outcome of if I get a full refund or if I have to sue the YHA for legal costs and the cost of the room which was the same price as a competent hotel in Whitby I ended up using that I should have used for this night all along, so I will update this review pending the outcome of the refund they owe me. The location isn't for those with vertigo or agoraphobia either, because it's on a cliff at the top of the famous 199 Steps; it gets windy up there, the sky is above you, the sea is there and you could see for miles, and it's high up. I was recommended this place by 2 idiots on YouTube on a channel called Travel Beans who seem to be traveling around England using YHAs all the time so are probably in the pay of the YHA, Travel Beans are idiots though, they spoke of a Full Yorkshire Breakfast too at a cafe in Whitby but failed hard when they didn't bother or care to share or divulge the information on which place in Whitby it was, I myself had to do my own detective work to figure out what place it was, so I should have known any business Travel Beans do recommend would be a ripoff and a con and a lie. This is the offending video that suckered me into this place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn8TvhwEguM
