This hotel is about a 3-minute walk to the Hawaii Convention Center. Upon first arriving, it looks a bit run down. The rooms are bare bones but fully functional. When I first checked in the lights in my room did not work. The desk clerk immediately put maintenance on it the next morning. (I had checked in late in the evening.) The place is clean, everything in the bathroom works well, and the bed is comfortable. The staff is friendly and efficient. There is a comfortable outdoor patio for relaxing, reading, etc. Be aware that there is no air conditioning, so you have to keep the windows open, and there is a LOT of street noise, especially motorcycles. My room faced Atkinson Ave with its tall buildings, which I think concentrated the noise. Possibly a room facing the back of the building could be quieter. The other residents are mostly old, somewhat disabled, or down and out, but they are all friendly. The YMCA does a criminal and sex registry background check when you make the reservation. The building is secure, and smoking and alcohol possession are prohibited. Across the street is the large Ala Moana shopping center with food courts, shops, and major stores, including a Target. Overall, the YMCA residences is a safe, comfortable, and inexpensive place to stay.
