Where to Eat in Aspen

"This is the type of spot you’d expect to find in a hip big-city food hall. The menu features down-home specials like braised lamb and contemporary trends like Vietnamese noodle salads and Tamarind Chicken. Meat & Cheese also serves a heck of a good margarita." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Google
A MUST STOP if you're in Shipshewana! If you've never tried their Bourbon Glazed Pork Chops (available in store only) you're missing out on some of the most tender, flavorful pork chops of your life! I seriously couldn't believe how their house-made glaze soaked that delicious, rich bourbon flavor through the entire pork chop. There's just no comparison between big box and Yoder's when it comes to the quality and flavor of their steaks, sirloin burgers, and pork. It's absolutely worth a stop here not only for their meat but experience their entire store and staff. Everyone is always so friendly and helpful. I'm also probably going to gain weight thanks to the sheer amount of new kinds of Amish made cheeses I picked up to try. You can't go wrong with the smoked bacon gouda, and they'll even slice it for you at the deli counter! My kids also love the snack and candy aisle and beg to pick up the chocolate milk every time we go. I love to grab their kettle corn for the drive home, and I always make a trip to pick up dip mixes and soup mixes before the holidays.

Google
The place to get the best meats and cheeses. They are also the best place for butchering live stock too. Packaged nice, labeled, organized and will load in your vehicle too. Staff is amazing and very kind a great local owned shop to go to highly recommended.

kevin R.

Google
I could have spent 2 grand in this place! Instead I got some amazing jerky and some candy for the kids. I nice place to stop before you head into the flea market. Very friendly and helpful staff.

chad J.

Google
I buy the 2 filets pack one steak is huge and can't tell the top or bottom and one is literally one single bite? I been eatting filets for 40 years and never in my life as a butcher sell this as 2 steaks I guess my wife only gets one bite litterly a 1 or 2 oz piece. Mr.yoder if you were gonna buy you and your wife a steak would this be acceptable? I don't think you would think so.

Google
We stopped here while waiting to check in to our room. The selection of meats and cheeses is great. I got the wood fired pizza cheese curds and they were awesome. We live 4 hours away and are taking meats and cheeses home. The prices can not be beat.

Jason P.

Google
We stop buy here everytime we are in town. Unique and great selection!

Google
We weren't sure what to expect at an Amish Meat Market. It was similar to the markets in Chicago if there were such specialty store. There are a lot of home preserved goods with their own labels on them. We noticed that all the stores had an overabundance of candy. But the staff was so kind and helpful. The customer came first to everyone.

Samantha B.

Google
Such a fabulous selection of everything. Lots of meat, frozen or not, lots of cheese varieties and the best Homestyle Salted Butter Caramels that I have ever had, they just melt in your mouth. The staff is very friendly, my husband and I stopped in on our mini weekend getaway and we wish we had a store like this closer to home. We bought bacon, lamb chops, jams, mushroom popcorn kernels, raspberry vinegarette, and those caramels! We will be back!!!

Yelp
Imagine the specialty area of your local grocery store deli as a miniature grocery store. A HUGE variety of extra that are fleshed out. Every pickled thing you could imagine. Spices, dried fruit and vegetables, soup mixes, condiments. And the meats and cheese are a plenty. Smoked meat, deli meat, and the potato salad is out of this world. Bakery good as well. This is my kinda Old School Place.
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
A spacious shop with a wide variety of meats, cheese , bakery items, noodles, and other Amish items. The are aisles of preserved goods, canned vegetables, pickles, relishes, apple butter, salsa and spices. In the center of the store are coolers with locally made cheeses and meats. There is a large variety of brats and meats, all reasonably priced and good quality. Over the years we have tried many of their meat products and have never been disappointed. When you first walk in the store can be a bit chaotic because there are so many customers, but the check out process is quick and efficient. A must stop when in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Reasonably priced local fresh meats and cheeses. They did not have any more grass-fed beef, which was disappointing. I did purchase a 5lb bag of fresh ground beef and it was absolutely delicious! Their marinated butter garlic chicken is very good as well. Their store was very busy and somewhat crowded, but the checkout and deli were quick and efficient. The store is small but very clean and orderly. I will definitely go again!

Yelp
An amazingly large shop in the middle of Amish Country. There was a large assortment of meats and cheese along with freshly baked breads and pies. The staff were exceptionally helpful and offered samples. The prices were low making me wish we could shop here regularly.
google avatar

Cyndi F.

Yelp
I have gone here for 25 years and I will no longer be giving them my service. I was told by a short dark haired woman who worked there that I could not use my cloth square bins to shop with. She said they do not allow them there even though they sell zipper bags there...hmmm?!! She was following me constantly around the store so much so that I had cut my shopping time short. Even when I checked out she was right there looking in my open bin. I even told the cashier that I felt uncomfortable and she didn't seem to care. So I would not recommend this store anymore to anyone.

Yelp
This place was like natural food porn! The displays rivaled that of Whole Foods or Erewhon (IYKYK). There is an entire section of canned and jarred things, similar to at farmer's markets, but the selection is vast. There were so many strange things, some of which sounded good, and others that you couldn't pay me enough to try. Check out that section for yourself. There was also a nice section of candies and sweets, that were all made by them. There was also a deli section with all kinds of prepared foods. But my favorite sections were the refrigerated case in the middle of the store. They had all kinds of meats and cheeses. This included smoked meat sticks and jerkys of all types of animals. Again, a unique selection, which gives this place its 5-star rating. We ended up getting some flavored milks in their glass bottle, which you get $1 back if you return the bottle clean once you are done.

Yelp
They had a power outage and we're not letting people in. Not their fault, but it was a drag. Shipshewana is a lovely little town, worth a visit.

Harold G.

Yelp
This is the 2nd time I've been ripped off by Yoders. Both times I bought what was labeled Garlic Ring Bolongna only to get home and find out it was some other kind of meat.
google avatar

Yelp
If you live in Indiana, Southern Michigan, or Western Ohio and you haven't been to Shipshewana & Middlebury, you're truly missing out. You definitely know you're in the Amish Country. Everything is quality made, including the food. This is quite the amazing market, with full service meat, deli, and the biggest variety of cheeses. They also have all kinds of sauces, pickles, canned fruits & veggies, frozen foods, spices, dips and more. And the prices are just right. I only wish they weren't so far from Indianapolis. But I definitely bought enough cheese to last me awhile. Definitely worth a trip if you live within a couple of hours!
google avatar

Peter P.

Yelp
It's called a meat shop, but there are a lot of dry and refrigerated foods for sale. It's basically a grocery store. It's quite large and, as expected, they have a huge selection of fresh meats.
google avatar

Susie R.

Yelp
Cheese samples galore, a large selection of giftable mixes, candies, jams, spices and other oddments, lots of sausages, a fresh meat case and a whole wall of frozen meats! This is where we get our buffalo burgers at a great price as well as frozen ground pork for burgers. And their fresh bacon rocks! All of their meats are Amish raised so there are no hormones or antibiotics. Shipshewana is only 30 minutes from our cottage so this is an easy trip for us. We have rarely been here that it wasn't packed with customers so be prepared for a crowd. And I have (wrongly) gotten more than one sample of a cheese or sausage and never been accosted by an employee. Still, a few rules: Use a toothpick, not your fingers. Do not double dip with your toothpick, always get a new one. Take only one piece of the samples as this isn't your lunch. Notes for the area: Traffic and parking can be awful. Please be patient. RESPECT the buggies and bicycles. Don't take photos of the Amish as most of them don't like that. YODER is a very common name in this area so be sure you go to Yoder's Meat and Cheese. They are closed on Sunday.

Yelp
We look forward to stocking up our fridge and freezer when we come through Shipshewanna. Brad at the butcher counter, along with the rest of the team members in the store, are always so helpful and offer new recommendations to us. The meat and cheeses are great, the spices are amazing, the butter, snacks, jams, homemade hand pies. I don't think you can go wrong here.

Tamara M.

Yelp
I have been going to Yoders for several years and spend quite a bit of money here and other area stores. I bought cherry sausage, it was so bad... it was old and not edible. This was the first time we ever had bad meat so I tried again and bought sage breakfast sausage.... Again it was old tasting, not fresh at all and not edible. we usually make a day out of it and I wanted to try it 1 more time. This time I bought a huge stewing chicken to make homemade chicken noodle soup. When boiling the chicken there wasnt a foul odor at all but when we all tasted it it was tough and freezer burnt taste almost game. so disappointed , I really didn't want to have to find a new butcher shop but cannot afford to keep throwing meat away. I am sorry but I tried 3 x and 3 strikes your out!
google avatar

Jennifer F.

Yelp
They have a vast selection of frozen meat at a reasonable price. I also enjoy looking through all the wonderful cheeses.
google avatar

Richard F.

Yelp
If you want the freshest, finest meats and cheeses this is where you want to stop. There is also a wide variety of jams, jellies sauces and crackers of all kinds. We had to stop in here to load up on all our favorites. They have samples out of almost every flavor of meat and cheese. All you need to do is take a clean toothpick for each sample. Unfortunately many don't and some were even taking with their fingers.
google avatar

Morgan H.

Yelp
I'm tired of stocking up on meat from the freezer and it being bad. I didn't mind paying high prices when the quality was good. The last few months quality has been a big disappointment and Im tired of throwing away spoiled meat or buying a cut and ending up with a totally different cut all together and sometimes even the wrong animal. I'm so done with buying meat from Yoders. I will still continue to shop for cheese when I have a need.
google avatar

Diane D.

Yelp
Say Cheeeese and lots of it , great selection at a pretty good price , the also have a wonderful choice of different sausages flavors are great ! Bakery, jams, pies, all kinds of wonderful foods a must to visit !!
google avatar

Karen A.

Yelp
You could get lots of cuts of meat frozen or not. Pork, chicken and beef. We tried ground ribeye patties and they were good. We bought some deli hard salami that was delicious, I wanted to go back for more. Lots of locally made jams and jellies. Deli meat and cheese. Many varieties of block cheeses. Prices were reasonable, we expected it to be higher considering their tourist location and notoriety. Was fun shopping. Definitely recommend adding this to your list of places to check out while in Shipshewana.
google avatar

Yelp
Yoder's meat and cheese shoppe was like cheese Mecca. There was a huge assortment of meat, cheese, and other various goodies. Despite the deceivingly small size of the store, I must have spent a good, long while looking at everything and deciding what goodies I wanted to try besides meat and cheese. I ended up getting various cheese, cheese curds, strawberry milk, some snacks, and beef jerky. Nothing has disappointed yet.

Yelp
We visited Shipshewana on our way home from Michigan, where we had spent a couple weeks visiting family. Had been a long-term goal of mine to spend a couple of days in the area as I was very curious about the Amish lifestyle. I had always admired the furniture they had built and heard a lot about the delicious homestyle cooking they did. It seemed as though every time we would've had an opportunity we were always on such a tight schedule as I was not retired. I absolutely intend to go back, hopefully with my daughter and/or granddaughters to visit again as we all love shopping and respect the handmade products. We stopped in at Yoders meat and cheese on our second day in Shipshewana. They had a complete meat and cheese section that was deli style where you could order up as little or as much of any meats and cheeses you wanted to try. We did not ask for any sampling because of the Covid situation. Everyone was very friendly and very helpful. They also had many cases full of meats and cheeses that were prepackaged, sliced and done sliced so very easy to shop. Was there more than meat and cheese to be had?? You bet there was. There were a lot of home canned jams and jellies, pickled products. Lots of breads and crackers and candies and fudge. I even purchased some spices that were touted to be really handy and could be utilized in many different meats, poultry and fish. I have indeed used them since returning home. They have proven very helpful in making what I have used them on quite tasty. They also had a large area in the back where you could purchase frozen meat products. In addition to some smoked meat and a couple of different types of cheese (including the Amish Swiss cheese which is my favorite) I purchased several different styles of packaged homemade dried noodles, And a pint of some local, farm fresh, Chocolate Milk. Honestly, I would've loved to spend a week in this community (or even longer) but I really enjoyed the time that I had here. I would highly recommend you spend as much time as you have available at all the different shops including Yoders meat and cheese. Their products are delicious and not full of the average amount of preservatives etc.

Yelp
Yoder's is amish gem!! We drive over from chicago to do our shopping. They sell the finest meats and cheeses. And many other fine Amish homemade foods you can't get anywhere else. I give this little shop my highest rating. The workers are super friendly, and always are happy to help if need something with no problem it's that Amish hospitality it's the best. Also very reasonable prices can't bet the prices it's worth the drive. 100% recommend!

Pappy B.

Yelp
We drive from western Kentucky to get meat at Yoders. Very good meat for very good prices.
google avatar

Jamie W.

Yelp
I am a frequent customer at Yoders meat shop and have been shopping here for years. I visit this butcher about once every month or two, and I swear they are the best butcher in the Michiana area! I have no affiliation with the owners or this business, however you might think I do marketing for them with the amount of bragging I do on them. My favorite buys are the frozen ground beef, ground turkey, ground chicken, ground sausage, hamburger patties and fresh bacon. These are staples that I normally buy and freeze to use over the next few months. Their meat comes from grass fed cattle and I never have to drain it, the quality is awesome. Once you taste their meat it will be hard for you to buy meat from a supermarket chain, because it's just not the same and there's no comparison with the taste. Plus, they are more affordable than the supermarket. You will get much better meat while paying less!
google avatar

Stanley C.

Yelp
Awesome butcher for beef. They have a vast selection of cuts and you can choose between grass fed and grain fed cows. They even sell American wagyu cuts of beef. My favorite cut from this shop is their grain fed ribeye cut. It packs a lot of flavor and has good marbling. Really recommend the place!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Yoders is a great place for meat and cheese. Bring a cooler and load up. The staff is very friendly.

Yelp
I've been coming to the Shipshewana Flea Market since I was a baby, and some things never change. Such as the fact that I still go almost every year, and we still always stop at Yoder's before we head back home. This is a great little shop. Its greatness is intensified if you come here AFTER wandering the market outside- because it's air-conditioned and it feels amazing after a day in the sun! As the name implies: it's all about the meats. Bacons, sausages, chops, you name it and they sell it. There's also a great variety of cheeses. What's awesome about Yoder's is that they always have samples out of various products, so you know what you're in for before you buy. Personally, I'd recommend the beef sticks and white cheddar cheese curds. They make a perfect in-the-car snack for the long drive ahead of us. Perhaps my favorite part of this store, however, is the endless aisle of candy. Call me a kid at heart, but it is impossible to go that aisle without nabbing at least one container. This trip, it was a container of mini dark chocolate buckeyes (about $4 for a little less than half a pound). Worth it. Sadly, they were out of molasses cookies (a must-have), but I opted to get Holstein Cookies instead, which came 6 to a bag. They're half chocolate, half chocolate chip, and all delicious. They might be a new favorite. There's also a pretty neat section of "old-fashioned" bottled sodas. There are classics like root beer and cream soda, but also some new favorites like Raspberry Chocolate Truffle ($1.79 a bottle) or Cucumber. It's pretty cool and worth checking out. If you're in town, don't pass this place up. It has a lot of variety, helpful staff, and is always clean and air-conditioned.

Yelp
Bring a cooler! If you are within driving distance of this wonderful establishment, bring a cooler! Our little family had the pleasure of visiting for the very first time recently, and this place is wonderful. We stocked up on meat and cheeses. Everything is upscale, and very fresh. Lots of canned goods, and we bought many of those too. Everyone who works here is incredibly friendly and helpful. Service at Yoder's Meat & Cheese is certainly a 10/10.
google avatar

Eva P.

Yelp
After spending the day at Shipshewana flea market we enjoyed stopping in at this delightful store. It is run by the Amish people in the Michigan area. They had fresh cheese, meat, bacon, kettle corn, all things delicious and incredibly fresh. They had samples of Gouda, smoked Gouda cheese along with many others. They had free samples of the different types of fudge as well. The people were super friendly, super nice and very helpful. We almost everyone with a bag of kettle corn so we thought we'd better but some. It was So good! And if you've never tried pumpkin butter (like me) it alone was worth the stop.
google avatar

Arie R.

Yelp
Lots of meat and lots of cheese. Prices are ok, expensive for some and reasonable for others. The popcorn stand outside, which they then sell inside their store, is the best kettle corn. So crispy and delicious flavor. They have massive bricks of cheese inside and certain meats in bigger portions. Lots of pickled items too and flavored milks. The cold brew coffee and strawberry were amazing.
google avatar

Dave V.

Yelp
We have visited Shipshewana a couple of times a year for the past 14 years. Our most recent trip 8/21/18, we stopped like we usually do here after visiting the flea market. I took a toothpick to sample the sausage, inadvertently stuck 2 little pieces, and this owner/manager confronted me! Told me to "save the samples for other people"! He was watching people like a hawk! I walked to the cheese side, and he confronted me again! I asked him what his problem is and he said "everyone is tasting but not buying". I told him we buy items and looked at my empty hands. I told him my wife had the purchases. I have been upset about this treatment since Tuesday! We were going to buy a few more items, but I told my wife to put them back!!! Surely we were shocked by this, especially in the warm community of Shipshewana!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
I LOVE this place! They have every type of meet. My husband loves the beef bacon, that's right BEEF bacon. The cheese selection is awesome too. They have so much more than just meat and cheese. Applesauce, noodles, butter and much more!
google avatar

Dara H.

Yelp
Had a great time looking and sampling all of the different kinds of cheeses and smoked meats. So glad we took a cooler with us, because we filled it. They do sell ice packs for $.99. We bought 2 and it worked out perfect. Now if it was a hot summer day we might have had issues. They also have a section of bulk foods. It is pre-package in plastic containers. They have snacks, candy and even hot chocolate mix. Most of the shops in Shipshewana sell these items.
google avatar

Chelsea B.

Yelp
An awesome selection of meats and cheese. Very friendly staff. TRY THEIR BRATWURSTS!!!
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
Yoders Meat Shop is one of my favorite stops while visiting Shipshewana, Indiana. A small community of English, Amish and Mennonite families working together to create one very unique town. Yoders offers a wonderful variety of cheeses from blocked cheese to cheese curds. A wide variety of cheeses from chedders, goat cheese, flavored cheese, and exotic cheeses. My own disappointment is that I am only able to shop during my yearly visit to area to see family. My mother law has purchased her meats and I can honestly say that the steaks have been really good. Yoders has a wide variety of meats.
google avatar

Deke M.

Yelp
Been 3 years since my last visit and review. This place maintains its quality in food and service. They "broke the bank" with the number of goods I brought home. Generous samplings of cheese & meat (with sampling etiquette provided. Thank you). Everyone is knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. This is my #1 stop in Shipshewana.
google avatar

Chris O.

Yelp
Get the bacon! That's really all I have to say about this place. The cured pork was amazing. It was my intention to freeze a pound of this treat and bring it back to Phoenix, but my family had other ideas and we had bacon sandwiches instead. But, man, did that make for some awesome sandwiches.
google avatar

Danielle C.

Yelp
I make a trip here about once a year when everything is opened and running. My favorite part is the huge selection of cheese. All sorts of funky flavors, then you have the frozen meat sections. Oh my. I just can't control myself. They have beef chicken, pork all wrapped up and waiting for your tastebuds. Plus you can sample their cheese and the sausages. It's not enough to fill you up but just to tease your palette so you'll buy block of it. It is usually very busy in here so patience is required but the line to checkout moves fast and you're out the door with all your goodies. It's a def must stop shop before heading home.
google avatar

Ben J.

Yelp
This store had everything I looked for in a roadside stop. An entire wall of refrigerators full of meat to the consumer's delight and rows of home-made candies, snacks, and other treats! This has been my 3rd visit and each time so walk away with something new, innovative, and surprisingly satisfying!
google avatar

Kristie B.

Yelp
I absolitely love this place! Their spices are the best. When we make it here we have to stock up for the next 5-6 months! Based on the crowd, I don't think we are the only ones that have to do this. Their meat is delicious! We appreciate the plentiful variety of samples they have! It makes me want to buy more than we need to....who am I kidding, I do by way more!

Deb J.

Yelp
Good value for high quality meat. Definitely recommend. We got some jam and baked goods too all very good and nice people.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Great selection of cheese and various sausage and bologna's.. deli meats looked decent and a good variety of unique crackers and stuff
google avatar

Sam R.

Yelp
Along with the Blue Gate Restaurant and Bakery, Yoder's Meat Shoppe is the #1 reason we come to Shipshewana anymore, since the shopping isn't as good as it once was. The main thing here that deserves endless praise is the CHEESE! They have a variety of meats and other Amish grocery goods that are usually pretty good as well, but the cheese is the main draw for me. They have several varieties and, if you go in the afternoon, they have samples. You might find me aggressively wandering around, toothpick in hand, searching for the right cheese to sample. Some highlights include the white New York aged sharp cheddar, the Farmer's cheese, butter cheese, smoked gouda, and many others. I wish we could take home more from here! Always a fun time stopping by and bringing home some snacks from Amish Country!
google avatar

Deb T.

Yelp
Thank you Lord for the Amish. I would give both arms and legs just to be near Yoder's. Not only is the cheese delicious, but my mouth was watering as I saw all the prime cuts in the freezer. Along with the cheese and meat, there are other goodies they sell like nuts, dried fruit, candy, AND CHOCOLATE! If Whole Foods or Trader Joe's could learn a thing or two then Yoder's is the place to start. I can't wait to come back as I had a blast at the Flea Market.
google avatar

Alisha W.

Yelp
Such an amazing little shop that most don't know exists. So many fun spices and salts. I have a hard time resisting all of the chocolate covered goodies in the candy area. The meat and cheese is delicious. My husband (Canadian) loves the cheese curds and my son can't get enough of the fun beef stick flavors. I personally love the meat section. They have Lamb, beef, chicken, pork, and Buffalo. You can also choose from the standard grain fed to a more natural grass fed meat. Don't forget to stop over at the butcher's counter so you can drool over the bacon!

Stacy M.

Yelp
The meat cutters give out grilling suggestions, very friendly. Have every type of cheese you can think of.
google avatar

Shyam S.

Yelp
There is just about everything to like about this shop(pe). The meat selection is great, but in my opinion, the cheeses are the big winner here, as are the free samples in abundance. They have tons of jams, jellies, sauces, seasonings, jerkies, chips and other foods, that you might find in any country store. Not everything is local or Amish-produced, but much of it is. What is great about this community is that everyone feels warm and welcoming when it's obvious the customer is not Mennonite or Amish. I think everyone shop stop here and pick something up before heading out of town. I am dying to try the FROG jam I picked up (fig, raspberry, orange and ginger).
google avatar

Pat M.

Yelp
Soooo much to take in! Lots of delicious cheese samples, spices, mixes, jams and jellies, meat cases, fried pies. Don't miss this place!!!
google avatar

Alicia O.

Yelp
Note to visitors they take take down all their samples an hour before they close. I highly suggest that you try before you buy it because I honestly was not impressed by their sausages. However I was impressed with their lemon snap cookies and the options for popcorn and seasonings. The prices on their cheeses are actually really good so I wish they would offer more samples of items that are not as common. The four-star is aimed more at the prices of their seasoning and cheeses not the sausages. If you can go on a Friday it's much better than a Saturday afternoon and less crowded.

Steven H.

Yelp
If you have never been, you are in for a treat. The Disney World of Meat and Cheese shops. (I say that because I used to work at Fort Wilderness in Disney World in the trading post and it was very similar.) It is an amusement park for your taste buds! You can sample the jerkies meat sticks, and cheeses and you will leave uplifted and excited to get home to partake of your treasures. We just tried the new Chipotle Pepper cheese and it really adds depth to whatever we put it on. I just made an egg scramble with smoked pork and Chipotle Pepper cheese shredded on top and I just can't get enough. We love their different flavored jerkies as well. They are softer and more flavorful than the shoe leather you get in stores. LOVE the Black Pepper and Cajun Jerkies. Be careful though, this stuff is more addictive than crack. Once you start eating it, the bag will be gone in no time. Yoder's is a bit expensive, but, for the taste, it is definitely worth it!
