6 Relics of Forgotten Fast-Food Dynasties

"In the 1960s, a restaurateur from Columbia, South Carolina, developed a method for infusing a honey flavor into fried chicken. Celebrity restaurants were all the rage at the time and the inventor, Gene Broome, began to seek a celebrity endorsement for his honey-flavored chicken restaurant. He was reportedly turned down by Jackie Gleason, among others, before settling on the cartoon character Yogi Bear (and presumably coming to some arrangement with Yogi Bear owners Hanna-Barbera for the naming rights). The new restaurant’s theme included a roadside neon sign representing a big, smiling Yogi Bear holding a chicken leg. Customers could choose between two-piece Boo-Boo Baskets, three-piece Cindy Bear Baskets, nine-piece Picnic Baskets (or “pic-a-nic,” as Yogi would pronounce it), or 21-piece Jellystone Baskets, along with sides and desserts. The store’s original location in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was a huge hit. Additional locations began to open across the Carolinas. Yogi Bear Honey Fried Chicken seemed poised to become a regional, if not a national, brand. That early success drew the gaze of fast-food giant Hardees Foods Inc. They arranged to purchase the franchise chain from Broome and his partners for $1 million, according to South Carolina’s Post and Courier. Reportedly, Hardee’s primary interest was the intellectual property behind the honey flavor infusion, and not the restaurant chain itself. As a result, future expansion of the Yogi Bear chain was halted. Existing restaurants slowly began to fail under the new corporate ownership. One by one, the locations began to close, with the second-to-last location closing in the late 1990s, leaving the outpost in Hartsville, South Carolina, as the sole remaining location. Diners in Hartsville are still greeted by a beaming Yogi as they pull into the parking lot. The menu remains largely the same and also features Southern staples such as fried chicken gizzards and sweet iced tea. The restaurant and its history are a point of pride for the local population and, despite the presence of modern fast-food chains, the citizens of Hartsville and the surrounding area still love their honey fried chicken and the restaurant enjoys a brisk business." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Ordered a bucket of chicken and a side of chicken livers on a Wednesday evening. They must keep the good folks on the day shift. I was served chicken that was so dry I wanted to put ketchup on it so I could swallow it. The livers were burnt so bad it looked like a box of charcoal. The coleslaw was chopped so finely you could just about drink it.

Google
We were in the area and thought it would be fun to give this place a try. Who doesn’t love Yogi Bear?! The parking lot was full when we arrived and we noticed a lot of folks eating their food in their vehicles. Stepping into the restaurant is like going back in time to the 1970’s. While waiting at the counter to order, we saw the staff was friendly and seemed to know everyone as locals/regulars. I ordered the three piece drumstick meal, which was accompanied by two sides and a roll, and my date had the three piece dark meal. Note that they do not have unsweet tea - or at least, were out of it while we were there. The fried chicken was very good! I didn’t feel it was sweet at all and it is served with honey on the side if that is your preference. The sides were not great. Between the two of us, we tried the mash/gravy, green beans, mac and cheese, and the coleslaw. The green beans were served southern style - which means they basically dissolve in your mouth and you don’t have to chew. The mac and cheese was overly peppered, and the coleslaw was a bit too tangy for me and had a very fine dice. I love crinkle cut fries, and wish I would have tried those instead. It’s hot in SC…and people were probably eating their food in their vehicles because it was 84 inside this restaurant. I would have the fried chicken again, but as takeaway.

Google
The chicken was pretty good, though my boyfriend wasn't too impressed by the fish. Sides were also just ok, nothing to write home about. But the atmosphere was cute, and they were definitely packed for lunch. Definitely worth a stop at least once.

TOMMY B.

Google
I guess I should have gotten the fried chicken, but instead, I got gizzards. They were just OK. The fried corn was not good at all. I took one bite and ended up throwing the rest away because it had a real bad burnt taste to it. The Mash potatoes were like the kind you would get from a hospital cafeteria . The best part of my meal was the sweet tea.

Tommy K.

Google
Great chicken but little atmosphere the sides are good too.

Paula R.

Google
NASTIEST FOOD that I have ever been served. My food took a very long time and when I finally got it to the table it was missing items paid for and the food looked like one big blob of black grease. Over $20.00 thrown in the trash. One and DONE for sure. Now I know why it is the last one! Everything about the place sucks. Don't waste your time or money.

Thomas H.

Google
My wife and I decided to take a little trip from Lake Wylie to eat here and it was worth it. Good prices and good food. We both got the 3 piece drumsticks meal and each got the battered fried corn while she got mac and cheese for her other side and I got green beans. All the food was delicious, the chicken was hot and crispy and that battered fried corn, shoot, that was right good let me tell ya! We also got a fried apple pie, man was it good too. Definitely some good eatin to be had here without needing to take out a second mortgage to pay for the meal.

Ogeid

Google
The fried chicken was good. I would highly recommend it. My only issue were the sides they were pretty average and weren't really anything I would want to try again. The sweet tea was really good, though.

Yelp
Great fried chicken. If you want fish or shrimp order ahead! I waited over 30 minutes for the seafood platter. Everything was hot, which it should have been. Also check to make sure your order is complete before leaving, It's an old drive in, so nothing fancy.

Yelp
Yogi Bear's Honey Fried Chicken was formerly an American fast food restaurant chain popular in the last 1960s and early 70s and zeroed in on the popularity of the cartoon character Yogi Bear and well, fried chicken. The Hartsville location is the very last Yogi Bear still standing in the world and was a nostalgic piece of history that's worth at least an adventure to once. My group and I arrived a bit later on a Saturday night, about 30 minutes before closing. While I loved the quirkiness of the spot and the vintage Yogi Bear decorations, the service and food itself weren't quite a homerun. The staff themselves seemed like they would rather be anywhere else in the world (which as a Saturday night I get it but stiiiilll) but they gave very short answers to our first-timer questions and we ended up missing items in our order that we had to go back up there and get. Also - we were disappointed to find that the fried chicken itself no longer comes with honey. You have to ask for a separate side of honey and drizzle in on the chicken itself. Something staff didn't feel the need to inform of us. We only knew this because a very friendly local who's been eating at this Yogi Bear religiously since it first opened in the 1960s told us that that's what you have to do if you want the honey on your chicken. The chicken itself was very good - not great - and the honey addition gave a great sweet/savory juxtaposition. And I loved the themed boxes that your meal (I ordered the Boo Boo Box) comes with. Definitely check it out for the nostalgia factor but don't go it expecting a fast food fried chicken that stands out from any others.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
I'm giving five stars because it's a nostalgic piece of history and the last of its kind. After driving two hours to dine here we arrived about 30 minutes before they closed so I attribute this to why our food wasn't the freshest . Love the quirkiness of this place . It's Yogi Bear everything from the name of the combos - I ordered the "Boo Boo basket" to the yogi Bear boxes your order comes in . I love a good themed restaurant . We met a gentleman born and raised in Hartsville who educated us on the history of the restaurant and raved about their food. He was so authentic and genuine in his love for this Yogi Bear restaurant and shared it was his second visit of the day to the restaurant ! I was a bit disappointed that the chicken breading was not already marinated in honey but that you have to pour honey on it yourself . I believe this is different from how it originally was back in the day . Either way , we enjoyed our visit and chat with a local fan . Would recommend and I would go back and try again . PARKING: free parking lot

Yelp
Local fried chicken and while it's a chain, it's the last of the restaurants in the chain. I heard about this place from the awesome Atlas Obscura https://www.yelp.com/collection/VTIO7Bny7WQ8nTeD5Jm4yw/ and now I'm finally here. Order at the counter and sadly, they were out of mac & cheese this evening. Instead, it was double cole slaw with my three pieces of chicken. It did not take long for my number to be called and then I was sitting at a table ready to dig in. Chicken was hot and flavorful. A squeeze of hot sauce was a help and then dipping it in their honey. Delicious. The cole slaw was a miss - too much pickle and not very crunchy. It was really good chicken, but if it was a head-to-head comparison, I would choose Bojangles over it. [Review 19359 overall - 933 in South Carolina - 329 of 2023.]

Yelp
Very good fried chicken with many side options. They serve pork chops also. Great desserts
google avatar

Anna T.

Yelp
This place was close to my hotel and I was looking to try local fried chicken. I ended up ordering a seafood platter with a chicken leg on the side. The chicken was extremely crispy which was great! The seafood was all fried. Not that I expected anything different but too much for me. The staff all had their southern charm and were so pleasant. I didn't come close to finishing my food but happy to be able to try it. One comment is that the south loves their sweet tea. I was hoping for unsweetened tea to drink but they had either sweet tea or sweeter tea.

Scottie G.

Yelp
Food is as good as I can remember. The wait time is incredibly long! over 1 hour for a 9 piece box at 4:05 on a Wednesday afternoon. Maybe short staffed. If so, plan a bit better. Really disappointing visit!
google avatar

Edward P.

Yelp
I'm not understanding all the 4 & 5 star ratings. The have decent fried chicken but it wasn't anything that was out of the ordinary. If anything, the chicken was actually a little dry. I'm addition to the 2 piece box I also got a pint of gizzards & livers. It was definitely more than a pint but again, they were nothing special. The people working there are all very nice though.

Tiffanie C.

Yelp
Visiting Hartsville and saw the Yogi Bear sign and said it looks interesting, why not try it. I wasn't aware that it was a chain restaurant and the Hartsville, SC location is the last one standing. Ordered 2 piece dark meat online and the order wasn't quite ready for pickup when arrived 20min later. The chicken thigh was tasty but the wing thing "some-ting" was dry. The green beans were very tasty and the Mac/cheese was decent. Supporting a local non-chain establishment is my goal while travel but I probably will only get the sides, if I visit again versus ever getting a full box of chicken.

Kevin L.

Yelp
The food and the management are fantastic. Also the owners take pride in their employees and are very nice people. The wings are the best in town
google avatar

Britton E.

Yelp
If I could give it no stars I would!! Food not worth the wait. Do not know how to multi task in the front at all. No one should wait thirty minutes for two items. Do better or hire people up front who can do more than one thing at a time.
google avatar

Cal W.

Yelp
Excellent chicken fresh and hot... love the crinkle cut fries.. always stop by when I'm in town great meal
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
Fried chicken is amazing. All the sides are pretty good too. Popcorn shrimp plate was way better than I was expecting. Only downside is it can be a little bit of a wait, even for a small order. But worth it
google avatar

Wes E.

Yelp
The fried chicken was the best fried chicken I've ever had! When I ate it, it was juicy and crisp. The service was excellent they called your number quickly. The scenery was excellent it had pictures of yogi bear from the cartoon everywhere. What a experience I loved it and can honestly say it is the best fried chicken I've ever had! If I could do six stars I would.
google avatar

Jerry B.

Yelp
I really love fried chicken and this it looked like so does everyone else in town. It was packed! We went right after work around 5 pm. It took a while to get our food but being as busy as they were it was understandable. The chicken was small and it was dry to me. I've had better and way bigger pieces of chicken . Wasn't what I expected. The place has indoor seating.
google avatar

Kelvin D.

Yelp
The chicken is crispy, juicy, and packed with flavor. I definitely recommend you go if your in the area. I definitely will be back.
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
I am a native of Hartsville SC and I recall Yogi Bear fried chicken being there for 50 years or more. The food and menu choices are excellent and the service is usually fast. Where else can you get exotic southern dishes like pints of chicken livers and gizzards? When I get back home to Hartsville I always stop by for the Bo Bo box for the dark meat selection. Great place and great food.
google avatar

Michael Y.

Yelp
Excellent service, great food and great prices. Be sure to try the daily specials. The fried chicken is delicious. The seafood plates are great and include fried shrimp, hush puppies and stuffed crab. The fried pork chops are great. The sides are good and the ice cream looks delicious.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
BEST fried chicken in the CAROLINAS!!! Crispy seasoned just right on the outside with juicy tender meat on the inside. I have had lots of fried chicken in my lifetime and prefer my own to most but one bite in and I was highly impressed. Just wish there were more locations. Suggestion: Yogi should put their dinners in cute little picnic baskets.
google avatar

Nancy C.

Yelp
Well, I guess you can't go home again. In the 1970's and 80's I lived in Hartsville. At that time, Yogi Bear couldn't be beat. The chicken and the chicken livers were always delicious. My favorite was the macaroni salad. Recently, in a fit of nostalgia, I returned to Hartsville for the sole purpose of getting a container of macaroni salad and some fried chicken from Yogi Bear. Much to my dismay, they no longer sell macaroni salad. The chicken was good but it just couldn't live up to my memory, especially since they didn't have the macaroni salad. Overall though, if you are just out for a good hot meal with some tasty chicken, this is the place for you!

Donna D.

Yelp
We are from out of town and came to eat lunch today at yogi bear honey fried chicken. First the place was so clean. The cashier was nice. The chicken strips were the best we have had in a long time. If we are back in Hartsville again we will definitely be back.
google avatar

Nancy S.

Yelp
Love Yogi Bear but sometimes there is inconsistency in the number of pieces/balance of light/dark meat in the order. Quality is always great though.
google avatar

Anthony G.

Yelp
Yogi Bear Honey Fried Chicken in Hartsville SC is absolutely delicious and finger licking good chicken. " Iconic" They have been in business for well over 40 years. They serve all pieces of fried chicken including fried gizzards and liver. Whenever I'm in the area. I get me a three piece chicken basket packed with dark meat, fries, cold slaw and little cups of Honey , and a cup of sweet ice tea. OMG It is the best. It's an absolutely must to try it for yourself. You will not be disappointed. My rating for this place is without a doubt 5 stars from me.

M J.

Yelp
I really enjoyed this place. The staff were very friendly and the chicken was unique and tasty. They had the cherry dipped ice cream, which was pretty good too -- nothing fancy, just a cake cone with vanilla ice cream and a cherry shell. A great, casual meal. Definitely will stop in again next time I'm in the area!
google avatar

Tim H.

Yelp
Wow what a great find thanks Yelp! Daughter was playing in a softball tournament right down the street so after a long day and still games to play we went and got take out. Sides were decent but the fried chicken and worth the detour. Such a great find.
google avatar

Lizzy C.

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE!!!! It is terrible and over priced to the max!!! I got livers and gizzards and my husband got the fried chicken. Let me tell you the l&g's were inedible. I have eaten them all my life and have never had them so awful. They were so unbelievably overcooked it's not even funny. My husband's chicken was dry and cold. I guess it had been sitting there for a minute even though they seemed to be busy. The side were bad too. The fries were soggy, undercooked, and unseasoned, the mash potatoes and gravy tasted like mint for some reason, and the rice and gravy wasn't bad. The sweet tea was the only good thing we got. All together I paid 27 dollars for inedible food that will be going to my dog.
google avatar

Reid F.

Yelp
I stop here every time I am in town! I eat at least once while in town and then I ALWAYS take a 15 piece home with me! Chicken salad sandwich is good too. When I eat in I have the livers and gizzards, but I know that is an acquired taste! If you are in Hartsville, and like fried chicken, don't pass up the Yogi Bear!
google avatar

Heather S.

Yelp
Best chicken in the east coast. When we travel back to SC we always make Yogi Bear a stop!!!! It's so good.
google avatar

Phillip A.

Yelp
Drove about 35 min from Bishopville because a search for chicken wings turned Yogi up. Got a 3 pc w fried corn and Mac/cheese as sides w biscuit and a drink. My spouse got the same. About $15 for both. I have to say....it was worth the trip. They were steady at 3:30pm when I got there to about 4:15 pm when I left. The entire time there were at least 2 or 3 folks ordering and picking up continuously. Needless to say, you won't get cold, stale chicken w that kind of turn over. This place is busy. The food was awesome and the fine folks working there were friendly. I'll be back!
google avatar

Crystal M.

Yelp
Love Yogi Bear Best slaw in town fast service and delicious food. Great verity to choose from Chicken is good but don't forget to ask for honey
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
I don't get out to drive-in's too often, but then again most drive-in's I know don't have a freakin' giant Yogi Bear sign and theme (+ 2 stars); the option of frying you up liver and gizzards, much less the keel of the chicken (+ 1 star); or serve reasonably tasty food that recreates exactly (e.g. faux mashed potatoes) what my generation survived on throughout the 1970's (+ 2 stars). Minus one star for my sticky table and another star because it's not the 1970's.
google avatar

Henry F.

Yelp
Was in SC for a day and decided to get dinner at Yogi because it was close to my hotel. The decor was awesome and I was excited to try the Cindy Bear box. 3 pieces of chicken, 2 sides and 2 rolls, extremely cheap. 3 stars for the food but 4 stars overall because you cant beat the price!! The chicken I got was a hit and a miss. One piece was on the drier side but the other two were perfectly cooked. The sides were just ok. Overall, for small town Hartsville, this will do!
google avatar

A M.

Yelp
I was intrigued by the great reviews (4 Star Avg) and the seemingly simple and nostalgic decor of this place. I had the 3 piece chicken dinner with 2 sides and 2 rolls (Cindy Bear box). The chicken was actually a little dry, but had a good taste. The cole slaw and the french fries were ok. The roll was just a store bought type but not bad. However, the service and employees were very good and friendly. Overall, I was a little disappointed with the food but mostly probably because reading the other reviews ("the best chicken") had gotten my hopes and expectations up. I would put this on par with a KFC, but I actually personally prefer Bojangles cajun chicken over Yogi's honey fried chicken. Perhaps I should have tried the wings or livers, but doubtful that I would go back.
google avatar

Sara W.

Yelp
Stay away the chicken no good .and sure isn't cook like the old ways just plain chicken. It's bad when our dogs will not eat it. My family when to yogi when I was a teen.well my mom want yogi bear chicken so I when by got some and got home with it mom said if she didn't see the box that the chicken came in she wouldn't have believed that it's yogi chicken. I got 9 pieces and 2 sides well got home just flies and rooms no slaw. But if it taste like the chicken I glad they for got it. It a DNR for my family.
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Delicious and very affordable. Love the convience of ordering online and picking up at the drive thru.
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
Not the original yogi bear chicken. They use to idea honey powder but stopped. I really don't think the chicken is any where close to what it use to be. I'm sorry.
google avatar

William M.

Yelp
I loved this place when I worked at Sonoco back in 86-88. It's not a five-star restaurant, but it's MUCH better than any other chain. I've drive out of my way several times since then so my family can experience a Boo Boo Basket!
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
Drove by one day headed back to Florida and the sign first of all draws you in. How could you go wrong with a neon Yogi Bear? It's a little divey I'll admit. But, aren't some of the next food you ever had like that. We are talking about a place in the heart of the South. It screams it with its side items. This isn't your East Coast fried chicken place. The chicken is just an experience that you will not forget. It's so juicy and moist. It's that fried chicken you think Idela was making in the movie. The chicken has that flavour you won't soon forget or find anywhere else.

Tatter T.

Yelp
The food is usually awesome. But today I decided to try a chocolate pudding. When I opened the top I was greeted with furry mold. Called the restaurant and was offered another. Umm no thanks. Not to mention I made a special trip from out of town just to go there. Disappointed.
google avatar

Daphne C.

Yelp
Love the chicken the gizzards and chicken salad also go for the cindy box... cant go wrong here priced right good food..only thing needed would be more seating
google avatar

Steven P.

Yelp
This is very good fast food fried chicken, juicy and flavorful, but not the best fried chicken ever. Not really even the best fast food fried chicken. Perhaps if the batter wasn't quite so salty...? A tip for first-time customers: the menu board on the wall can be rather overwhelming, and the staff wasn't particularly helpful. Grab one of the paper menus and choose your options before stepping to the counter. The onion rings were well prepared, very thinly sliced with a light batter. They had good seasoning but, again, very heavy on the salt.
google avatar

Brendon O.

Yelp
Dont get me wrong, yogi bear chicken is great especially when dipped in honey, but it's a little pricey. We got around 40 pieces of chicken for a big family and paid almost 80 dollars. The chicken is almost always crunchy and slightly sweet while keeping the taste and texture of fried chicken. The food also isn't greasy and drippy, but it has a taste of freshly fried in good oil. It is almost always hot and cooked well, and is always gone before 20 minutes in the house. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Zoe J.

Yelp
This chicken is delicious! Lightly battered, fried to perfection, not too hard, not too soft, just right. The rolls are the perfect compliment. Similar to a previous reviewer, I have enjoyed this chicken for over 40 years, so they've got to be doing something right, including giving excellent customer service. I really wish they had more locations nationally. I tried to fry chicken with with honey in the seasoning, but it never turns out right and I can cook! Furthermore, we live in Washington, DC and have family in Hartsville, so we only can get Yogi chicken when we visit. Sometimes I feel like driving there just to get the chicken! I have travelled to many parts of the world but have not found any fried chicken that compares to Yogi's. Thank you for the experience!
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
This chicken joint is for you if you enjoyed chicken that has no flavor and size better subpar. Bitter coleslaw and instant mashed potatoes and the place was dirty and it does need to be and it does need to be remodeled badly.this is the worst chicken joint in the state of South Carolina please do not waste your hard earned money on this joint run fast in the opposite direction of this place your taste buds will thank you
google avatar

Tamara H.

Yelp
I think this place can be summed up in one word: ehhhhhhh. We got a dark meat box with fries (undercooked) and cole slaw (anemic, brown, and funky in the worst way). The thighs were cold, and the leg was pretty hot. It tasted ok, but was chewy and just generally unimpressive. My husband got an order of fried chicken livers, also. The order was huge, but they were totally overcooked and kind of bitter. Basically, I wouldn't say it was gross, but it definitely wasn't good, and I won't be back.
google avatar

Ashli T.

Yelp
Great chicken! I love the coleslaw too. The mac n cheese is a little bland. Usually a long wait especially at peak lunch and dinner times.

Austin G.

Yelp
Yogi's was a place I kept hearing that I needed to try. I stopped in at lunch one day, and the food was okay. Atmosphere is average for your standard fair fried chicken place. May give it a second visit in the future.

Yelp
I suppose I'm a bit biased because I'm from Hartsville and there's a big nostalgia factor involved in my perception of Yogi Bear's food but I really will miss this place if it ever closed down. I've eaten ALOT of fried chicken all over the southeast and I keep coming back to this place. When I was a growing up in our small town Yogi Bear was a staple for mine and many other families. We have KFC and Bojangles but they may as well not exist. The food used to be higher quality before new ownership. The sides especially have suffered a flavor downgrade which is a bummer. However, I don't go to this place for the sides, nor the ambiance. I go for the juicy crispy fried chicken which they have been serving up for years. It's still great, it's crispy and juicy, and has a great flavor. It's southern fried chicken, therefore it's not too salty. You just like bland food if you complain the about the sodium level. The mashed potatoes are also great! Mac and cheese is meh and cole slaw is hit or miss. I also highly suggest the fried gizzards and livers. There's a reason there's a line out the door on a Sunday afternoon after church. So put away your health consciousness and try it sometime, you won't be disappointed if you order the right thing. It's seriously the last one of its kind and a Hartsville institution!
