Very clean and tidy with Impossiblely friendly staff, great layout and tours, currently have a Harland Miller exhibition taking up all of the downstairs....I know local & famous etc but it's not for me.. but that's personal choice. Exhibition of a lot of plates no title that I could see maybe hosting a traditional Greek wedding. Was it worth £8.50? Absolutely and I will be back

Superb permanent collection of paintings, sculptures and ceramics. We were drawn by the Harland Miller exhibition which is excellent and well worth the ticket price. If we’d had time we’d have returned again that day - which you can with ticket t’s & c’s. The Miller exhibition is playful yet thoughtful and well curated. I’m a typography fan so art that combines traditional skills with words and type gets my vote. Superb and inspiring stuff. There are some interactive sections for adults and kids alike to have fun. Highly recommended

Not being major art enthusiasts, we found some of the painting works and cultures intriguing and of interest. However, there was more modern "Art" then we would have liked and considering we are in a big historic city it was actually quite small and not really value for money.

Lovely gallery. Nice collection of contemporary English pottery and ceramics. Several nice 16th and 17th century oils, notably Procaccini's Annunciation, and also a nice Turner. There is currently a very good installation of digitally created visual and sensory art that is free access. Unfortunately my experience was a bit marred by the fact that children appear to be allowed to run and play freely and noisily through the galleries, and even two gallery employees engaged in an extended and loud conversation in the gallery, apparently oblivious to the quietude required for true enjoyment of the excellent sensory exhibits. Both parents and employees displayed a lack of appreciation for the contemplative nature of most gallery spaces. That said, the gallery is still well worth a visit. Simply be prepared to be annoyed if you are seeking a quiet refuge from bustling York.

I went to see the Harland Miller exhibition which is extensive and brilliant. The other galleries are well curated and it’s well worth visiting for the excellent ceramics including the Anthony Shaw Collection. Lots of child friendly activities in most of the spaces and an excellent shop. The garden is worth a visit in the summer too.

By far the noisiest and most distracting gallery I've visited. There was an activity for children taking place, combined with two staff members walking circuits whilst chatting together. Some superb works of art, though not as extensive as I'd imagined. The ceramics section didn't appeal, but then I was rewarded by discovering the Grayson Perry jars which were a delight, if somewhat risqué. The current Harland Miller XXX had many works dated 2025, prompting the thought, are they even dry yet? All in all, a pleasant hour. If this review was helpful please give it a like below.

This was fantastic, staff were realpy friendly, reasonably priced entry and noce choice of work . A good mixture of artists that kept my hyper attention well considering i was on my own. I'd squeeze in another visit next time I'm in york 👌

Interesting arrangements of paintings and ceramics. Beautiful spaces; pleasant gardens and cafe. We had an enjoyable time here
