Lamp no Yado is situated in a rocky cove surrounded by high cliffs at the end of the Suzu peninsula. It requires some effort to reach if you don't have a car. We took the bus from Kanazawa (3 hours in a comfortable coach), and were met at the end of the line by a taxi, which drove us another 30 minutes to the ryokan. It was worth it. Our standard room was quite large, with its own private bath on the terrace, but we were upgraded our second night to an incredible duplex that was perched right over the waves. The original building is over 500 years old, and the inn has been in the same family for 14 generations. Exquisite, delicious kaiseki dinners and elaborate Japanese breakfasts are included. The staff was delightful, and we had no problems communicating. Especially helpful was Tatsuki, a young man who has spent time in the US and has a good understanding of English. We chose to stay two nights, and we spent the entire second day relaxing in the various baths and staring at the waves. The ultimate spa vacation. We've stayed in various onsen ryokan in Japan, and this was one of the most special experiences.
