Wonderful place, wonderful experience! I’m so happy I chose Yoshiike Ryokan for my stay in Hakone. It’s pricey but worth it!
It was honestly so much bigger than I expected, it has 3 wings. So it’s more like a resort rather than an inn. It can be harder to navigate and you might have to spend some time wandering the hallways to get to dinner/onsen/reception.
The garden was the absolute highlight, it’s honestly a work of art. So much respect to the gardening staff for maintaining such a big and beautiful garden. It was unlike anything I’ve seen. Definitely put some time aside to explore this garden.
I chose to have the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast. It needs to be booked in advance along with the room reservation. I’m very glad I did, it was an absolute treat. The dinner was basically many courses back-to-back. The dishes were carefully crafted, an authentic taste of Japan you can’t get anywhere else really. Along dinner, you’re given a menu for drinks and their seasonal recommendations. I got the recommended sake. Please keep in mind that the meals are not customizable. Especially if you prefer Western food, it’s best to not get kaiseki dinner and book another restaurant close by in advance.
Breakfast was also very traditionally Japanese. It was served only until 8:30 which was very early for me personally but it is what it is. Seems to be a standard practice to serve breakfast so early in Ryokans.
Room was very comfortable, my futon was laid out by the staff while I was out for dinner. The views out my window were breathtaking. The provided amenities could be improved though, there were very limited.
The onsen was great, with the option of both indoor and outdoor baths. Water was a very comfortable temperature and silky smooth. Again, the amenities could be improved.
There is a nice lounge nearby reception, where they provide many types of drinks, which you can also take up to your room. I thought it was a nice touch.
All in all, I was very happy with my stay. My only problem with it could be the time I had to spend walking around the hotel. But it’s not that big of an issue given the sheer size of the hotel.
