Where to Eat in Tokyo According to the Owner of Wise Sons Deli - AFAR

"A celebrated example of old-school yōshoku (Western-influenced Japanese cuisine), serving nostalgic dishes like hamburger steaks with demi-glace, omelets, and spaghetti. The setting channels a classic feel with chefs in matching uniforms and tall French-style hats, a cool bar for whiskey highballs, and a reputation as one of the top spots for this style of food in the tourist-friendly Osakusa area." - Danielle Walsh

After a few weeks in Tokyo I was craving some comfort food and came here. Got the beef stew with rice and it nailed it! Dark rich gravy like grandma used to make (well, maybe yours but sadly not mine) with chucks of delicious fork-split beef and super tender carrots and potatoes. Mated with rice it made for the perfect comfort food and certainly better than anything I ever had back home. Make sure to grab a counter seat next to the stove to see the action up close. This Showa era diner is not to be missed!

It’s on the expensive side, but the place is cozy and nice for the experience. The food wasn’t really my thing, but it wasn’t bad. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and I really liked the service. They also have a daily-changing lunch menu.

Lamb steak was medium, no pink whatsoever (I suggest you ask the customer) Beef stew was okay. Strong taste but not very balanced flavour. Mostly tasted like marmite. Although the beef was extremely tender and nice. I don't recommend eating here if you're familiar with western food. Maybe it'll be more enjoyable if you're not from Europe or a western country :)

Good food good service. I came on 3pm no any queue. This restaurant very old school Japanese western food. Highlight is omurice (fired rice with egg) and beef stewed. You can choose rice or bread.

We saw this restaurant in a book and decided to try it. We were lucky to get a seat right away when we arrived. The food has a Japanese–Western fusion vibe. I had the pasta — it was sooo good — and the beef steak was amazing: juicy and tender!

Nostalgic, old-school delicious flavors for Yoshoku (Japanized "Western" dishes). The Omurice, Doria/Gratin was excellent comfort food at hefty portions. My favorite part of the experience was the "Retro Feel" - not just the tastefully appointed "time-travel" decor, but the wonderful very attentive service. The staff and the chefs pay a lot of attention to you (without being intrusive) and it seems like they really want you to have a good time. Don't miss the Showa Era style Pudding - one of Japan's best, IMHO. Good location between Asakusa's Sensoji complex and Kappabashi Kitchen Tool Street, beside a shopping mall.

The most tender beef stew and hamburg steak I have ever had! The ambience is very warm and inviting. Was mainly locals, but they still had an english menu for us. Overall was a 5/5 meal for us and I have a feeling I will be thinking about this place when I get back to the states.

It was purely by chance that my family and I found this place to have an early lunch at Toyama, after we visited Toyama Castle. The owner of the restaurant, a very charming lady (but I have unfortunately forgotten her name), was very friendly and hospitable, and recommended fantastic and delicious dishes for us! Immediately after we ordered our lunch, a string of people came in and some had no place to sit! Food was delicious, unique and highly recommended!! Thanks for the wonderful lunch experience!! 🥰
