Yudanaka Onsen Pudding Honpo – Yamanouchi, Japan - Gastro Obscura

"Yamanouchi is a small town found in the Nagano Prefecture, part of the Japanese Alps. The area is mostly visited for two things: the Japanese macaques, informally known as “snow monkeys,” and the abundance of public baths formed from hot springs, known as onsen. Yudanaka Onsen Pudding Honpo is a quirky dessert store situated in a vacant traditional Japanese resident building, which combines both these local favorites. They have created two characters Snonkey, a local monkey who is said to love the onsen hot springs, and Yukko, a local chicken who provides the eggs to make the deserts. The shopfront tells the lighthearted story of the creation of these characters. The puddings for sale are made from local free-range eggs and milk from the local cows and the range of special flavors includes apple caramel, coffee jelly, and organic matcha. The products are available to buy 24/7 from an unmanned vending machine inside the shop. Know Before You Go Yudanaka Onsen Pudding Honpo is a short walk from Yudanaka Station. There is parking outside. It is well worth visiting the Jigokudani Monkey Park to see the wild Japanese Macaques." - linkogecko, Obscuravibes, AFJAGExplores

Really cute monkey themed 24hr pudding self service shop. Important tip is to bring cash as the self service payment requires exact payment unless you are generous with the tip. A variety of flavours, favourite being the coffee pudding. 3 for 1000 yen, or buy individually at 400+ yen. There is a little table for 2 inside, but space feels tight and limited. Best for takeaway.

Every time I go to Japan I find at least one special taste I have never experienced before. This time it’s the Pudding from this shop. Absolutely amazing taste! Must buy, when here. I am not sure if there’s staff at some time of the year - currently is just a vending machine

Self-service local pudding shop themed after famous Snow Monkeys. Worth breaking your diet to try this local delicacy. Remember to bring cash.

Very delicious dessert spot in Yudanaka onsen village. They are open 24h : if you come late at night, there is a vending machine. The pudding was super silky and smooth and the flavours were great !

Self serve pudding store. I love love love the puddings here. It was a shame I missed out on the onsen egg pudding but the original and the apple one were absolutely beautiful, soft, creamy, not overly sweet and it just melts in your mouth, each spoonful was such a delight. Make sure to clean up after yourself and sort the trash correctly. There are English instructions around so you just need to read them carefully. Keep the place tidy for the next customers!!

Tiny little shop with counter and vending machine selling pudding in a jar. No one was at the counter, so we used the vending machine to get 3 flavors - coffee jelly, hot spring, and caramel apple. All 3 were very delicious!

What a wonderful quirky shop to visit while in Yudanaka. The shop is unattended and kind of in an honor system to pay. But what makes this place phenomenal is the custard pudding they make. I don’t know who makes this stuff since we never see them. Could be elves for all we know but every day the vending machine is stocked with all kinds of silky goodness. My daughter and I stopped by 3 times in 48 hours. If you need to pack a snack or just stop in for a bite it is a must.

We loved this place so much we went three times! We tried most of the flavors. Absolutely delicious and such a cute place. Only in Japan can you have an honor system that lets you enjoy a pudding stop anytime of day!
