On the Grid : Tung Tung

"Another big hit for Chinese Street food in Toronto. Tung Tung specializes in egg style waffles. Anyone who has ever entered Dragon City Mall can tell you that the first thing you can smell entering the market is the waft of fresh waffles being made right in the entrance." - Tennis

One of the first Chinese Hakka restaurants in downtown Toronto, and it truly delivers! We ordered the beef fried rice, chili chicken on a sizzling skillet, and fried calamari. Everything was delicious. The chili chicken had that perfect Hakka-style spice and came out sizzling hot, the beef fried rice was flavorful and well-portioned, and the calamari was crispy without being greasy. On top of that, the service was fast and friendly. I’ll definitely be back anytime I’m in the heart of downtown Toronto.

I have a ton of respect for the family-owned business and their story, and want to see local businesses succeed. I think if you're looking for some food that's going to fill your belly for ~$20, then this is perfect for you. In my opinion, the food is okay. Stopped in on a Wednesday and decided to try the Wednesday special which comes with an egg roll, pop, and Manchurian chicken. The egg roll feels like it's a Costco egg roll - it actually tastes exactly the same as the frozen ones my family used to buy growing up. And the Manchurian chicken, like some of the other dishes here (I've had the chili chicken in the past) comes drenched in sauce that for me feels like it has too much corn starch. But, the people here are nice and the place seems pretty busy, so maybe it's just not for me! I will say the meat portion is generous.

I came here many years ago (before the pandemic) and I was blown away by the pork belly I finally got the chance to come back again for my mom's birthday for lunch. I am STILL amazed by the food here. The pork belly was still extraordinary! The chilli chicken here has a flavour that tastes authentic. It's the best chilli chicken in Toronto. I know that they brought this cuisine over here and you can really tell that it can't be duplicated! The service was very friendly and helpful. Everyone is really nice and the atmosphere is calm and spacious. I love this place so much! Thank you for sticking around

Google
Really great spot for Hakka food, right downtown. The service here is exceptionally good. The food was amazing and came out very quickly. You can customize the food to suit your tastes so if you want something spicier or more garlic or whatever, they’ll do it. The space is quite large and can accommodate a lot of people easily. 10/10 recommend.

Google
Glad we finally gave this place a try! The food was so GOOD!! The chili fish (dry) was my favorite! The salted fish fried rice was authentic, and the cantonese fried rice was very good too. Will definitely come back

I've been here several times and their food is consistently delicious. I always appreciate consistency in a restaurant. I've tried several items on their menu like their chilli beef chow mein, Manchurian chicken chow mein and chilli chicken in rice. All of them were packed with amazing flavor. The staff is really helpful and friendly, always attentive. Highly recommend this spot for anyone who's downtown and craving some Hakka food. I would even go as far as to say that this is probably the number one Hakka joint downtown. I just wish they were open later on Friday and Saturday.

Google
Authentic Hakka food--that I grew up on, that Mom & Granny used to make. So appreciate all the familiar flavours! Plenty to choose from for Lunch with different daily specials. Friendly & helpful staff. Oh did I say the lunch portions were huge? Look forward to next time!

Google
Yueh Tung Restaurant is hands-down one of my favorite The service here is absolutely amazing — the staff are always so polite, welcoming, and make you feel right at home every single time. It's the kind of place where they remember you, and the positive energy is just contagious. As for the food? Incredible. I always order the chilli chicken on steamed rice — it's me and my coworker go-to Friday work meal (which happens to be Sunday for us), and it's the perfect comfort food after a long shift. Flavorful, perfectly spiced, and consistently delicious — I never have to worry about cooking when I get home because I know Yueh Tung has us covered. If you haven't tried this place yet, you're missing out. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Temper your expectations because BlogTO is the equivalent of winning the Oscars LOL. This place is decent. It is your typical average Hakka restaurant. I came here 2 times decades ago when the parents ran the joint. The staff were rude and I had asked about Hakka Sweet Noodles (Foong Mei) but they dismissed me that "we don't do that here" and somehow I just thought I had gotten it wrong thinking this was a hakka restaurant. I did not eat here again for a LONG time. Then I saw tons of social media videos of this place and learned that the daughters had taken over. I wanted to support the business because a lot of Hakka restaurants are closing down in our city because they kids don't want to take it over. I messaged on IG and learned that they DO have Hakka Foong Mei which is called Hakka Sweet Soy noodles on the menu. I went there twice in December 2 weekend back to back. I noticed the menu was revamped which did a much better job at explaining all the dishes and its history. The staff now are also incredibly friendly, care about service and take their time. It is your standard Hakka food with decent portions and in some instances the portion is big. Like the small soup actually serves 4 people. My point is this place will not disappoint if you are a fan of Hakka food but temper expectations with pricing since it is in the downtown core so not unusual to see the price point. You aren't going to get some special Hakka powers or be blown into oblivion with flavours from a Hakka mascot (which I feel like some reviewers had hoped - odd but you do you). Some reviewers saying they don't understand the hype but I am not sure there is any hype around this place. No one said its the #1 Hakka restaurant in the world but it is one of the oldest in Toronto. No one said there is a huge line up of people outside. Where is the hype? Did you hype it yourself in your head just because it was featured on BlogTo? I was a bit surprised at how quiet the restaurant was which I was grateful for - not that it was empty, it just wasn't rowdy like more Chinese joints. Will be back!

Yelp
I picked up takeout. Chili Chicken dry and the Sweet Soy Noodles dish's. They were both good but not great. I feel like there is some hype here. I was convinced to give it a try by some YouTube food reviewers who billed it as ground zero for Chili Chicken in Toronto. I just feel like I've had better is all I'll say. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Yelp
I love the staff here, they are super friendly and nice. If you eat in, they are attentive to your needs. Service is fast and the food comes to you piping hot! I often get take out for lunch and they lunch combos are reasonably priced and you can add on sides for $2.50. My go to is the chilli chicken (without sauce is a must) and rice with a side of Chinese broccoli. The portions are huge and you can easily get two meals out of it. Great deal for downtown!

Yelp
It was such a nice experience at this lovely, well ventilated and spacious restaurant. The waitress who took our order was super nice and accommodating of my dietary restrictions. Then the waiter who served our food was super nice too. He actually served the soup in our bowls. The portion sizes are huge. A small hot and sour soup was a huge portion for all three of us. The soup was a little too much vinegar to my liking but my husband loved it. Then we ordered hakka noodles which the waitress warned us it would be a little sweet. But the flavors were amazing. We ate it along with chili chicken which was not as spicy as we hoped. Overall the food is good, service and portion sizes are amazing. I would come back and try their egg fried rice..

Yelp
This is a well-known restaurant in my family for authentic Hakka cuisine. This restaurant is situated on the 2nd floor of a building in the heart of downtown Toronto, and inside is very spacious which means large parties are welcome. The waiters were really friendly towards us and gave us suggestions to maximize our dining experience. One of the waiters suggested we order the Manchurian chicken with wet sauce and the chili chicken dry so we could try one chicken dish with sauce and other dish without sauce - it was a great idea! The food is delicious, the chicken and beef were so tender and so flavorful and paired well with rice. We will definitely plan to eat here again if we visit downtown Toronto. I want to try other items on the menu, but if I were to eat these same dishes again I would be perfectly content with that too.

Yelp
I think this place redeemed themselves, the manager working there still remembers us we've been coming g there for years since I was 5 years old. If you want authentic Hakka this is the place to come. We ordered chilli fish, chilli chicken and crispy beef. The chilli fish I believe is most popular, it's really delicious, crispy on outside and soft and delicate on the inside, the chilli chicken was really good had a Smokey Flavor, you get that authentic Hakka taste, what I liked it's not as salty as Frederick's, If you have chilli fish make sure you eat it with the white rice, if you like noodles make sure you get chilli chicken with the crisoy noodle I didn't get it because I'm trying to avoid carbs. I wish they would start giving oranges with the fortune cookies their oranges were so good, but maybe covid changed everything and everything is now expensive it's understandable.

Yelp
Craved some Hakka food so we UberEats'd this restaurant's top 3 items: Hakka sweet soy noodle, chili shrimp, stir fried kung pao chicken. All the food came in good portions, but for the kung pao chicken, we were disappointed that there were more vegetables than chicken in the dish. The sweet soy noodles were super tasty, not too sweet, and had a wonderful chewy texture. The shrimp, however, was the star of the show. Perfectly spicy and crispy, these shrimp were amazing - definitely recommend it. Last but not least, the kung pao chicken had good flavouring as well: it was salty and spicy, well cooked. As mentioned before however, there were more of the accompanying vegetables in our plate than the chicken. Overall, this place is great for Hakka food! We didn't get to explore many of the other options but we hope to do so in the future :)

Yelp
Came by for lunch and tried the chili chicken with gravy lunch special and added broccoli. the portions here are massive and it was nice to see that they use freshly fried dark meat for the chicken so it was nice and hot. Servers are efficient but not particularly friendly. They are very busy during lunch.

Yelp
Pros: + Good portion sizes and reasonable prices. + Food is tasty and has a lot of 'wok-hei'. + Seating is comfortable (with large dining area). + Good service. Cons: - Food can be a tad strong (oily / salty).

Beth W.

Yelp
Told that this was the oldest hakka restaurant in Toronto, so went to check it out for lunch. My expectations were high - we heard that hakka was a fusion of chinese and indian cuisines and were anticipating really flavourful dishes. After eating at Yueh Tang, we read more about hakka cuisine and realized it's not quite what we had imagined. We ordered the chili chicken which was not particularly spicy and was ok for chinese food. The tofu dish was better in texture, flavor. None felt like fusion.

Wayne Y.

Yelp
I would rate Yueh Tung five stars for the great attentive service and four stars for the food. The server was very patient in explaining the dishes and when he learned of my wife's allergies, he worked with us to come up with dishes she could eat. Food-wise, they might use brown sauce a little too much and the chicken with mixed vegetables, which we had them make in a white, garlic sauce tasted the best to me. They had some traditional Haka dishes that my wife likes so we may go back again.

Yelp
Food is not bad. Chili chicken and Pakoras quite good. Compared to Scarborough places you get less food here and it's more expensive (understandable since it's downtown and not in Scarberia). Perhaps the Scarborough places beat this place in terms of taste but it's close/good enough here. Service is where they let themselves down: Rude staff - waitress of around 45-56 years old - rude, shouting at you (calling you an idiot according to my friend/translator) in Chinese assuming any one who looks slightly asian can speak Chinese! Has happened twice now. Rude old guy - came to pick up food. Says he can't understand what I'm saying then throws the receipt on the floor towards my direction after he sees I haven't given a tip for pick up! I've spoken to the 2 younger ladies who work/own the place and they seem quite civil! Anyway, I'm giving this place a wide birth since I hate the overall service and attitude from the staff I'll just wait and drive to Scarborough to get Hakka food.

Yelp
They sell 3 types of Hakka food: Indian Hakka, Cantonese Hakka & Hakka Hakka. I tried to find out what dishes were which type of Hakka but the staff were very unhelpful. Had Hakka wonton garlic noodles (I think this is Cantonese Hakka). They were decent. There were quite a lot of wantons & they were fresh & bouncy. There was some BBQ pork. The sauce was decent but there was no smoky wok flavour: supposedly it was stir fried noodles but tasted tossed in sauce.

Tracy D.

Yelp
Absolutely fabulous, friendly staff and the food was amazing. Good portions with great flavors.

Greg H.

Yelp
The food is always good The best hot and sour in the city Only downside the portions are cut in half

Yelp
Really solid option for Hakka food! A friend and I got two classics of the cuisine, the chili chicken and Special Hakka Noodle Soup, which were both great. (Noodle soup had a more sour profile than I expected.) With sides of rice, it came out to $27.50/person after tax/tip, while the portions were enough to provide significant leftovers.

Yelp
I was very pleasantly surprised coming here. It brings back fond memories of Spadina garden which used to be close by and I've been missing it. We had some crispy beef on a hot plate and the chilli chicken in sauce, then also had some baby bok Choy. The beef was so good, so crispy and tasty. The chicken was also really good. Very tasty. The portions of both were very large. We finished off the beef bot that we needed to but it was so tasty. I'm shocked this place doesn't have better reviews, we will coming back as regulars I reckon.. I'm sorry it took so long to find this place.. It's been here for ages too...check it out!

Yelp
This place was my introduction to Hakka cuisine, and it was a pretty good introduction. The food was flavourful and plentiful. My one wish is that the flavours were more bold like Indian cuisine rather than the safer Chinese flavour profile. Here are some reviews dish-by-dish: Crispy beef - 3/5. Good, but a little mundane. Too much sweet sticky sauce. Singapore Noodles - 5/5. I have never met Singapore noodles I don't like. It's one of my favourite dishes to order in Chinese restaurants. If you haven't tried it, you must! Think thin Chinese rice noodles with curry sauce, and some veggies and crispy pork. Yummy goodness. Braised Pork Belly - 4/5. OK so pork belly is about the best thing ever. It melts in your mouth like buttah. This pork belly was quite nice, but I've had better. Fried Rice - 3/5. Meah. Fried rice is fried rice. You've tried one, you've tried them all (I challenge someone to change my mind...) Hot and Sour Soup - 3/5. That's another dish I MUST order at a Chinese restaurant. This one was not bad and the portion was HUGE. It was missing some flavours, and some heat, and some salt. Calamari fritters - 3/5. Pretty nice. We've had a few other dishes, but the theme was pretty much the same. Good, consistent, but shy of greatness. Restaurant is big and spacious, but feels a little like a big food hall. Service is attentive.

Yelp
I would say this is probably my favourite venue for (Hakka) chilli chicken. I usually order their chilli chicken on rice during lunch time for 11$. Sometimes I would go for the rice noodle upgrade (3$). For the rice noodle upgrade they would fry the rice noodle in a wok then bed it with a generous layer of sauce and chilli chicken. Dinner prices are slightly more, but the quality is a lot better than other Hakka restaurants.
google avatar

Rich R.

Yelp
I'm so glad we found this place. Do not let the second floor location fool you as this not your average Chinese takeout place. We ordered fried rice, braised pork belly and garlic baby bok choy and all the flavors were there. No extra oil on the fried rice just the umami goodness. You can't miss the soft, falling apart pork belly! And the clear garlic sauce on the baby bok choy was not overpowering at all. Now that's what I call comfort food at its best!
google avatar

Shefali B.

Yelp
I recently heard about this restaurant and how it was one of the oldest Hakka restaurants in Toronto. So I decided to do a takeout order to try it out. We ordered the Chili Chicken with gravy and the Chicken Fried Rice. I loved the flavour of the chilli chicken, it tasted so authentic to what you would find in Calcutta, India. The fried rice was also really great, it soft and had a good flavour. They also gave a great house-made hot sauce which I really liked! Overall, this place was a little on the expensive side, but since it's downtown, I can understand that. I'll definitely be back!

Nick I.

Yelp
great food, great service, best hakka in the city. go support a great local business!

Yelp
My go to hakka spot downtown for the past couple years. Solid dishes, good quality food, and good deals if you go to the restaurant - but expect a 30% markup if you order on the apps. It's hard to go wrong with anything you order, but a common family favourite is the crispy ginger beef. We also got the crab corn soup, shrimp chow mein, and chicken fried rice. Overall, this is a great spot to satisfy those hakka cravings.

Lucy C.

Yelp
Bad attitude in serving and bad food. We have to pay extra for the replacement dish for the tofu

Yelp
Located upstairs of a building, on a small street, I didn't expect much. Climbing up looking at old grey carpet reminded me of an old Chinese restaurant. This Hakka place looked decent without much decor as two walls are full windows facing toward Dundas street. By 6 pm, I was surprised that it was packed and people were waiting. The waiter's proficiency in English wasn't the greatest. We got four dishes to share with two steam rice bowls to split. I figure they cater more to other race as chopsticks were not on the table or offered. I had to ask for them!! Dish 1- their popular spicy chicken which was actually spicy and it was a good portion. Dish 2- stir fried snow pea leaves with chopped garlic. It was good, but for $13, it was pricey. Dish 3- vegetarian ma pu tofu was the only dish that came out hot (in temperature). However you need plenty of rice to go with it as I found it salty. The tofu at least was soft and melts in your mouth. Dish 4- sweet and sour chicken for my partners craving and I only ate a piece. Two sweet for this Cat. Service wasn't the greatest but at least we were not kicked out quickly as we sat near the entrance. Some Chinese places give you the bill before you ask which is a definitely signal. Verdict: I would only go back with friends to try their other dishes. Maybe ask for less sauce or salt. Or whatever they use.

Yelp
Located on the 2nd floor above the Japango and Kyoto house, this Chinese Hakka restaurant is a great place to stop by for authentic Chinese Hakka food. Service: We were quickly seated and given menus. Servers were good and made sure we were taken care of. Food comes at a good pace (not super fast as if it was pre made but not slow either). We were served water soon after ordering. The place was really clean, fairly modern looking and has a nice view. Food: Chili chicken - came out hot and freshly fried. The breading is pretty thin but still holds crispness against the tender, juicy meat. It's definitely dark meat (which I prefer) and boneless. Has a great flavor and spice level is perfect for those who like the spice but prefer lower heat. You get to choose between dry or sauced chili chicken - we got dry because we weren't having white rice. If you're getting white rice, try sauce-y to make your rice more interesting. 5/5. Hakka sweet soy noodle - this was also made fresh and hot. The noodles are fried in a soya sauce based sauce although with more sweet flavors. It has a small amount of pork and veges but don't expect much. It is pretty large plate of noodles. Tasted good but wished there was more than just noodles - 4/5. Price: Prices are a tad above average for most chinese places but probably average (or even below) given the downtown area. Personally, it was good value based on the portion sizes. Summary: Great place for Hakka Chinese food - recommend getting their Hakka dishes that aren't widely available at other Chinese food places.

Yelp
I have stopped in to pick up dinners during the lockdown and I must say, I still love Yueh Tung. It brings back such fond memories eating with friends and family in the pre-covid times. As much as I love their food, some of my favourites like chili chicken and manchurian chicken are just not the same when you bring it home as that freshly wok fried crunch is gone by the time you get home. However, the flavour is still right on as I remember which is so comforting. On a different note, I find it amazing that some of the staff working there are the same folks that used to serve me in my university days some 20+ years ago. Friendly faces and efficient service is a definite bonus these days. I will continue to eat here every chance I get and look forward to a time when we can return to eat in with friends and family again. I hope it is soon.

Yelp
In October 2019, we had just arrived in Toronto from DC for a work conference. We were excited about Toronto's reputation as a city with great food. We were craving Hakka cuisine and found Yueh Tung within walking distance of our hotel. We arrived shortly before they closed, but they still served us. The food was wonderful! It was just what we were craving. We still reminisce about the Manchurian Fish, and that was 18 months ago! I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
My family and I have been loyal customers of Yueh Tung for over 25 years now. For all those years, we have never ever been disappointed with the quality of food- it's always delicious and consistent. The hot and sour soup, sizzling beef, beef chow mein and shrimp fried rice are staple dishes that we always order. On special occasions, the black bean lobster would grace our dining table as a symbol of celebration. So naturally, I wanted to order lobster for my birthday dinner this year. I didn't pay attention to the restaurant's hours and ended up calling 20 minutes before they closed. The girl on the phone was very apologetic and told me that they wouldn't be able to prepare the lobster in time, which was totally understandable. I thanked her and started hanging up but she heard my husband say "but it's my wife's birthday!" before I hung up. She called me back 3 minutes later to say that the staff all felt bad rejecting the birthday girl's wishes and offered to make the lobster dish for me, afterall! They completely made my birthday! Yueh Tung won my belly years ago but they now have my heart. 5 star food, 5 star staff, 5 star customer service... The absolute best of the best!

Yelp
Giving this a harsh 3. Probably closer to 4. But Hakka/Chinese in queen west area has gotten really good. Chilli fish was a great surprise. Enjoyed that the most. Then chilli chicken and lastly the sweet soy noodles. That's my order of preference. Latter was a bit too sweet for my personal taste. But I can see others really enjoying the dish. It was one of their signatures items so gave it a shot.

Yelp
Great place for Hakka, everything we ordered was great. My wife loves their oysters. Fast service and good food and price

Yelp
I love this restaurant! I have been coming here on and off for years. Hakka style Chinese food is stellar is now what I look for whenever I'm in a new place. Service is very quick. I think it's better to dine in than order take out as the portions for take out are a little smaller. They have increased their prices a little either due to the pandemic or inflation but still worth the price in my opinion!

Yelp
Food: 3 Stars Service: 3 Stars Ambience: 4 Stars I pass by Yueh Tung often but this was my first time going in to try the food. This place caught my attention as I remember seeing it on TV and know people who have recommended it. Based on what I gathered it seemed their chili chicken is very popular so we ordered the chili chicken with chow mein as well as the Manchurian tofu and Hakka dun tofu. I do not understand the praise for the chili chicken or why it is called chili chicken. There was little taste to the chicken and absolutely zero spiciness. I was a little worried at how spicy the chicken was going to be prior to my arrival but was really disappointed to find that it was not spicy at all. The Manchurian tofu and Hakka dun tofu were much better dishes. Both dishes were very saucy (which is to my taste) and the Manchurian tofu did have a trace of spiciness to it while the Hakka dun tofu is a non-spicy option. The service here was not bad. We had to wait a bit to be seated and for our orders to be taken even though it was not that busy. Other than that the servers were fine and our food arrived fairly quickly. The space itself is large and bright. The seats were comfortable and spaced out well. Just a note that this restaurant is on the second floor so you will have to traverse a set of stairs to reach the restaurant. Our first experience at Yueh Tung was alright. I would not mind trying some of their other offerings at a later time.

Yelp
Man what a ride the last few days with our beloved Raptors. From perennial playoff disappointment to NBA Champions, our boys did not let us down! Not only is it a place where some Raptor players come to dine, Yueh Tung Restaurant is is one of the oldest and most popular Hakka restaurants in the GTA! Serving Chinese Hakka Indian cuisine, this place can get packed during lunch and dinner rushes. From Hakka Soy Sauce Noodles, Manchurian Beef and Chicken Pakoras, the food here is solid. However the true standout is their famous Chili Chicken. Either the saucy version or the dry version is amazing and perhaps the best anywhere! A must order when you are here! . Solid 4/5 for a fantastic Hakka restaurant!

Yelp
I had been to Yueh Tung many years ago and was blown away by their Chili Chicken, so when I found myself in the area on a recent Friday, I figured I'd see if the dish was as good as I remembered. It kind of was. We ordered the Chili Chicken and I chose the saucy option and the sizzling plate. (The latter never materialized but at least I wasn't charged for it.) The sauce is certainly as tangy and spicy as I remembered, and I certainly enjoyed combining the sauce with the side rice I also ordered. It was a gloriously saucy mess. The chicken, on the other hand, wasn't great. I don't know if it had been sitting around or what, but it was actually quite soggy by the time it got to our table. Also, there were a number of inedible pieces contained throughout the generous helping, so that wasn't great either. We also decided to try the Hakka Wonton Garlic Noodle, and it was really disappointing, to be perfectly honest. The predominant flavor was garlic, which is fine, but the noodles were slick with grease and the wontons were tasteless and soggy. The one-note flavor profile got really tiresome really quickly. I would return to Yueh Tung to maybe try some of their other options, but I definitely won't be going out of my way to get there.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times after hearing they had great lunch special deals. And indeed, for $8 you get a massive plate of food. You walk up a flight of stairs (or take an elevator?) and you'll find yourself facing a huge room. Someone will greet you eventually. The place can get busy during lunch rush, and if you're coming in a small group (say, 2 or 3) you might be seated at a large round table with other small groups. But this isn't unusual; lots of chinese places do it. Of course, they will ask you whether you are willing to sit with strangers or continue to wait. Choice is good right? Lunch menu comes with plenty of options that should satisfy most tastes or needs: lots of chicken, beef, pork, seafood, and vegetable dishes to choose from. There are spicy options and non-spicy options. You don't necessarily have to order off the lunch menu either; if you need some wonton soup or whatever just let them know and they'll make it for you. Lunch specials come in a huge plate with rice covering half the plate and meat covering the other half. It's quite a generous portion of meat. One thing to note is they tend to drench your dish in sauce, but you can ask for less or no sauce if you want more crunch on your meat. The food is pretty average to me, but it tastes good and there's plenty of it so what's there to complain about? Perhaps lack of vegetables in a lot of the meat dishes, but if you're getting more meat in exchange for vegetables, not a problem, I can just bring my own bok choy.

Yelp
I've been going to Yueh Tung for years now and they have never disappointed me. I usually go here when I have a craving for Hakka food. There a rent many options downtown. The lunch menu is great - big servings for a decent price. Most items are around $10 to $11. If you want to change the plain rice to egg noodle/fried rice/ etc there is an $2 surcharge. But honestly it's so worth it because the fried rice is great! My go to order is usually the shrimp with lobster sauce on fried rice. The only downside to going during lunch is that it can get extremely busy and you may end up having to share tables with strangers! Even though it got super busy, the servers were still attentive. Just don't be surprised if they give you the bill as soon as all the food is out. During dinner, most of the items don't come with rice and you'll have to order rice on the side. It's not as busy as lunch because most people tend to do take out. But the portions are big and everything is yummy! We got 4 items and it worked out to be $23 between 3 people. We were super full and very satisfied. The service was great and they were very attentive. Make sure you bring cash because there is a surcharge is you use credit/debit under transactions of $20! Yueh Tung is a great place when you're craving Hakka food. I'll definitely be back again!

Yelp
Our go-to Chinese restaurant for years! This place has delicious food and a really great selection. They have great service, both over the phone for take out and in person in the restaurant. The chili chicken is so good! They're also really helpful when ordering for vegan guests, and have a good selection of vegetarian options.

Yelp
This is my favourite Hakka Chinese restaurant in the downtown area. I've been here several times. I've always ordered the chilli chicken chow mein. This time was no different and as always it was very good. The chicken is cooked perfectly and is very tender. The sauce isn't too salty and has just a slight hint of spice. I should have specified super spicy. The other dish we ordered was the Cantonese fried rice. Very tasty too. It had a nice mixture of bbq pork, shrimp and chicken. This is a place I would recommend to anyone that is in the downtown area. I will be back...!

Yelp
A run of the mill Hakka restaurant located in the middle of downtown next to eaton mall. The restaurant is located upstairs and you will be seated immediately. The menu has a combination of cantonese and hakka dishes. I ordered the popcorn chicken with rice for $10. The price was just about right and I know how much rent must cost downtown. The food came quickly and the servers were attentive. The owner works there everyday and he makes his daughter the cashier. However, one thing that I did see is that one guest had something on his food. not sure what it was but it appeared serious like some kind of bug. the owner told the customer that his meal was free and very apologetic. So there are some hygienic issues here.

Yelp
This is my favorite Hakka restaurant; not just in Toronto but in general. I can't say enough, and most of it is due to one dish: Chili Chicken Dried on Fried Rice. This place is always busy at lunch time but whether I've come for lunch or dinner, the consistency is always the same: Amazing. When you order the chili chicken you can get is saucy or dry (which still has sauce, it's not actually dry!) and then you can order just the chicken, or have it on a bed of rice. It's not written but you can ask to have it on fried rice; this combo is ridiculous!

Yelp
I go here for lunch every now and then. The price is pretty good. I usually end up with a bill of ~$11 before tip. Their chili dishes come with the option of saucy or dry (a lot less sauce) and steamed or fried rice. I find that the saucy option is overly saucy; almost soup-like. My regular is the Chili Beef, dry, with fried rice. The chili is mildy spicy; nothing over the top. Don't expect to take amazing IG photos. It's more about taste than presentation here. The service tends to be quite good and the environment can get loud. But, that's mostly a patron thing. If you're coming for lunch, you should ideally arrive prior to 12 (before the lunch rush), as this place can easily get packed. If it's a diet cheat day, and you're looking for something with a bit of a kick, try this place out!

Yelp
I came here with friend for dinner on a Tuesday night at 5pm. The place was pretty much empty but a few families came during the time that we stayed. We shared the chili chicken(saucy)($13) and mixed veggie chow mein($11). Both dishes were big portions. Chili chicken: 8/10. It tastes like a creamy and spicy soy sauce with spices giving it a Sichuan flavour. The only problem was that the chicken was not very meaty. Veggie chow mein: 7/10. What I liked about this was the crunchy and chewy texture of the noodles and the veggies on the side, but the sauce was a little too oily and lacked could use more flavour. The restaurant was very clean and the waiter was kind which lead to an overall great ambiance and experience. That's why I'm giving this place a 4 star review. I'll likely come back to try some other dishes.

Yelp
I never knew this place existed but glad to find a Hakka place in the downtown core. I've always liked Hakka food and decided to give this place a try. We had the braised pork belly, salted fish fried rice, chicken pakoras and chilli fish. Overall, I thought the food was decent and portions were generous. My favourite dishes were the chicken pakoras and salted fish fried rice. However, my boyfriend enjoyed the pork belly a lot. It was flavourful and cooked perfectly tender. Just a tip - they do need a bit or preparation on the pork belly so order that first when you are seated. The servers were nice and food came out quickly which made the experience pleasant. I will definitely be coming back again for a Hakka food fix!

Yelp
Yeuh Tung serves up Toronto Chinatown classic dishes that I've grown to take for granted. The different chili chicken options and Cantonese favs alongside that beg for a good shot of soy sauce and that thin orangy-red hot sauce. The lightly battered peeled shrimp has always been a great memory for me, and the bitter melon stuffed with pork and shrimp was a treat. Located on the second floor, this is clearly an upscale restaurant decked out in efficient and friendly and attentive servers in their smart black and white uniforms. Long a favourite of Cantonese ex-pats in the city, you can tell it's run with care when the servers go out of their way to please. Interior has an updated old-school layout, sedate and relaxing, letting us settle in and get comfy in the medium-sized dark booths along the view out onto Elizabeth Street near the core of the city. The time capsule is real for me here with great flavours and textures from a Toronto institution. A significant part of my love affairs in and with Toronto involved this food and it continues to bring me joy. Next time I'm going to try the sizzling chili chicken on the platter, and as well some of the pakora chicken wings. Then there are some Manchurian items to check into. The menu is plenty long to have lots of variety to share. Worth a visit!

Yelp
They definitely gotten more busy but increased all their prices! The chili chicken used to be $10, it is now $14 The egg fried rice used to be $6, it is now $10 The portions have gotten smaller with prices moving higher. They are doing great though, more busy then normal! I understand that the business needs to make money but for cafeteria like food, that's cooked ahead of time, not worth the price!
