The Essential Guide to Beppu, Japan

"Set in the forest, Yuyama No Sato is a mountainside onsen that truly feels like an escape from the city—the owner, now 86, created it after retiring and I found its design endlessly discoverable. One minute in the milky bath next to a waterfall convinced me of its restorative power; because it’s an outdoor mixed-gender bath where swimsuits are required, it’s also a comfortable option for first-time onsen visitors." - Kim Kay Kim Kay Kim Kay is a freelance writer with a focus on Japan travel and culinary culture. Great little place really nice family run business. I recommend people to go here if you want to get away from the town and the tourists a little bit more nature well actually a lot of nature!🌲♨️ It’s ¥900 and you should take some swimming costumes with you or you have to purchase some there for additional fee (200yen. For these are throwaway swimming costumes made with very cheap paper like material they don’t last lol they’re one time only use!) Pulling in all the great day, plenty of little different bath to go into some very hot some just right you can even go under the waterfall after you’ve come out the steam room 蒸し風呂☺️

This place is so incredibly rad. Different from a lot of the other onsens you'll find, this place is fairly rustic. You'll stop by the owner's home just off the road where you pay your (extremely reasonable) entrance fee (600yen for us). If you didn't bring a swimsuit and towel you can pay another 300 yen to rent both. From there you'll have to walk through a beautiful bamboo forest to get to the bathing area. Once there it is an incredible little oasis of hot springs with multiple baths, a cold waterfall, and steam room (its really a tent but it fits the vibe). Anyway, extremely worth the bus ride, highly recommend.

A wonderful experience bathing in nature. Wear shoes for the walk. Slippers are provided at the bathing area. Bring your own towel and bathing suit. 900 yen now, but still worth it!

Lovely place, very quiet. The water fall sets makes the atmosphere. Short walk through a bamboo forest from the reception down to where the baths are. Was there completely alone on a Thursday morning.

What a magical experience from first stepping into the property. The owners were working at the house putting Shiitake spot into logs. These people have put so much love into creating this place. The two sisters are married to two brothers and it all work for them. The pools are well placed and to find some it's a treasure hunt. Like the steam room. It's so creatively done. One pool is true hot. The bamboo forest is so beautiful. Bamboo shoots is a side like income too. They harvest and cook them over bricked steam cookers. The couple s are so nice and really happy to have a chat. I didn't want to leave.

Completely outdoor onsen which is basically outside the back of someone’s house and down a hill. 600¥ for entry and 100¥ for a small towel or 300¥ for a large. You have to bring bathers as it is outdoors and mixed bathing, they provide swimsuit for a small fee but I just went in my jocks as I forgot to bring any. Also recommend bringing water as I forgot and got pretty dehydrated and ended up drinking out of the waterfall there since there’s no drink fountain (there is a vending machine back on the road but it’s a bit of a walk) Recommended to me from the owner of Omoloso hostel as a hidden gem Onsen and he was completely right, the mud bath there was also a great experience, ended up finding sand in my clothes days later though 😂

I loved this Onsen. I was fortunate to spend an hour by myself in these springs under the beautiful canopy of the trees with the sun gently shining. Eventually others arrived. I was actually surprised that no one else was there. There were several pools which had different temperatures. In between each pool I would cool off in the river. I think they raised their prices on my last day, but the elderly lady let me keep the same price from my prior visits.

Beautiful onsen in nature. It has multiple pools with different temperatures, and a small waterfall for a cold shower. It's a family business and the owners are very nice and friendly.
