Zagame’s House – Hotel Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"What's the vibe here? Once a scruffy motel, Zagame's House has been reborn as a character-filled boutique property that expertly mixes creature comforts and urban vibes. Straddling the border of the city center and Little Italy, the art-strewn hotel attracts an in-the-know crowd that appreciates smart design and proximity to great pizza. What's the backstory? Brothers and Melbourne hospitality heavyweights Victor and Robert Zagame have owned this hotel for decades but only decided to upgrade it in 2019. The top-to-toe renovation—which cost about $14 million—was overseen by a Feng Shui master. Tell us all about the rooms. The sleek guest rooms—furnished with marble, dark woods, and brass fixtures—feel like they belong to a much more expensive hotel. Hi-tech touches elevate a stay here; aside from brand-new Samsung flat screens and Muk hair dryers, there are bathroom mirrors with multiple light settings, plus sensor-operated minibars that charge you if you remove an item for more than 60 seconds. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? Wi-Fi is strong and free. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? Although the surrounding neighborhood is full of superlative Italian food , it's worth sampling the fare at the hotel's two restaurants. All-day brunch is served at 1851 Coffee Kitchen, where chef Michael Tse oversees a European-Asian menu featuring Belgian waffles, breakfast ramen, and flawless flat whites. In the evening, find a spot at Lord Lygon, also overseen by Tse; here it's all about the epic wine list and a tapas-style menu featuring local meats and cheeses. There's also 24/7 room service. And the service? Staff are unfailingly friendly, and the hotel runs smoothly, but there's no concierge; it's expected that guests can look after themselves. What type of travelers are here? Australians too hip for big hotel chains; clued-in visitors from overseas. What about the neighborhood? Laid-back Carlton, also known as Little Italy, lies just north of the city center, and the attractions of central Melbourne are easily walkable. The quality of the food on Lygon Street, the main restaurant strip, varies wildly, so do your research. Is there anything you'd change? Add some wellness facilities and Zagame's House would be unbeatable. Any other hotel features worth noting? There are some lovely little details in the guest rooms; the free hotel-branded socks are a particularly nice touch, and Soho House acolytes will appreciate the Cowshed toiletries. Bottom line. Generously appointed rooms and a fun neighborhood location make Zagame's House a real contender." - Dan F. Stapleton

We stayed at Zagames House for 8 nights and had a fantastic experience. The location is ideal if you want to retreat after a long day in the busy CBD, but is close enough to be convenient. We had an issue with our room (not the hotel's fault) and the manager treated it seriously and had it sorted for us within minutes which was extremely appreciated. Only downside is the floorplan of the rooms, with the toilet lacking any real privacy. It is not necessarily a problem but something to be aware of before you book. Overall I am happy we stayed at Zagames House for our holiday. It felt safe and relaxing, and all of the staff were lovely. Thank you guys.

I’ve stayed here a few times recently while apartment hunting in the area. The team are so friendly and helpful and always welcoming. The rooms are modern and very clean with good amenities and products. Even hair straighteners in the rooms! I think this place is excellent value and a great spot for a short stay in Melbourne, especially if you want to investigate all the cool things in Carlton/Fitzroy. A great choice for solo travellers too, I felt very secure and comfortable.

My husband and I stayed in this wonderful property a few weeks ago. Location is wonderful, rooms are perfect and staff are so friendly. I loved everything about this hotel, and couldn't find anything to fault...they owner has thought of everything. Food at Lord Lygon was great to drop in for dinner after a busy day. Our new favourite Melbourne hotel.

A great last minute find for an overnight in Melbourne. Great location, walking distance to the CBD and all of the restaurants in the Lygon Street precinct. Rooms are all modern, comfortable and fully convenient in terms of amenities. The bed was great and shower had great pressure. Would absolutely stay again.

My partner and I stayed here in mid March 2025 for three nights and absolutely loved it. Super cute interior design, central location, reasonable pricing and the most comfortable bed! The staff was lovely too. Only downside was the weird door situation between the bathroom/toilet and the rest of the room. Not a lot of privacy! Otherwise, fantastic, and absolutely highly recommended for couples and singles visiting Melbourne.

I have to admit. I don't think I'm cool enough for Zagame's house. The venue is the dimly lit alternative to what QT hotels wanted to be. The neatly appointed open plan rooms on trendy Lygon street really deserve high praise and left me wanting nothing. Not loud at all. Quiet and relaxing. The bar across "Lord Lygon" was also too cool for me but very relaxing for a happy hour drink.. I stayed for a bottle. Breakfast in the hotel's reception was excellent. The eggs Benedict perfectly cooked. Coffee was also very satisfying. I will return. Well done.

I want to start with what’s great about the hotel - the women and men at the front desk (Rebekah in particular) are fantastic. We were there for 5 days and she wore a bright genuine smile each time we met her and she helped make the stay so much more enjoyable. We had the corner room and it is decently sized, with a comfortable bed and some space for us to move around. The shower and wash amenities - from Shaw & Co (it says it is made in China) with coconut lime infused shampoo, bath gel, conditioner and body moisturizer is top notch and boasts a lovely, luxuriant scent and feel. Zagame’s House is a hip looking hotel and it has a decent vibe on the edge of Little Italy’s Lygon Street - so there’s food aplenty, but Little Italy has a lot less Italy in in than say, Asia. I suppose we could say that about Rome or Milan as well, but since this Little Italy is just a small area, the dearth of quality Italian restaurants here is a little too obvious. Also - everyday we get a bunch of idiotic drivers and riders with esteem issues revving their modified exhausts to show off how loud their bikes and cars are. This is a psych condition I wished Freud or Jung had the opportunity to psychoanalyze and eventually link to poor self esteem issues. It causes a racket daily - thankfully it is not usually quite early in the evening. Here’s what is not so great about the hotel… the lighting. For some reason, the owners have decided to intentionally make all the rooms dim except for the bathroom, which is too bright and exposed with a Chinese inspired see-through door and glass. Some might feel uncomfortable exposing their silhouette when they are conducting their business. For some reason, we did not get our daily service of water (we had to ask daily), or make up room service (and change of towels and floor mats), or refills of tea. It’s a small thing but the lack of attention is telling. I’m not quite sure if this is a Zagame’s House issue or an Australian hospitality industry issue since I’ve not been down under in a while and have been spoilt silly with top quality Asian hospitality. For example, we tend to overorder when dining out. In most countries, even in Europe, the wait staff will pack it up neatly and sometimes even make it into a silver foiled goose. In Australia, they dump the container or the silver foil on the table and you are supposed to transfer the food yourself. That’s unacceptable in most parts of the world but culturally the norm here. It’s strange because service tends to get better over time instead of degrade. This is why I started with service, especially that from Rebekah, who served us with a smile and she would not be out of place anywhere in the hospitality world. 5 stars to her; 3.5 starts for everything else.

Excellent! Staff (Mohi) were particularly helpful when QANTAS hotels stuffed up our booking (again). We were given a great rate but we need to stop using QANTAS and book direct. The room is a delight with premium fixtures and fittings, really comfy bed in a quiet location with hundreds of restaurants within walking distance. We will definately stay here again.
