Frankenmuth Is ‘Michigan’s Little Bavaria’—and It's the Best Small Town for Families

"This Main Street sweet spot claims the world’s largest selection of toffee flavors (milk chocolate toffee with peanuts is a go-to), and they’re known for treats like the Walking Strawberry; in winter months I’d recommend their signature hot cocoa or chocolate elixir." - Katy Spratte Joyce Katy Spratte Joyce Katy Spratte Joyce is a food, business, and travel writer based in Omaha, Nebraska. Google
Zak & Mac’s Chocolate Haus is a must-stop in Frankenmuth! The shop feels cozy and welcoming, and the staff are super friendly. Their handmade chocolates are outstanding – rich, smooth, and full of flavor. I especially recommend the chocolate-covered strawberry and their unique fudge varieties, which taste fresh and not overly sweet. Prices are fair for the quality, and you can really tell everything is made with care. Whether you’re looking for a gift or just want to treat yourself!

Google
My first time visiting this Chocolate Haus. It was so many chocolate covered items to choose from. I kept it simple and purchased 2 dark chocolate peanut butter patties. They were delicious! A perfect blend of peanut butter and dark chocolate. Inside the shop was quaint and it smelled good! I would visit again if I ever go back to Frankenmuth.

Google
First time visitor and will happily return. Lots of chocolate and cholate covered something!! Lol!! The walking strawberries were 🔥!! So much goodness in one cup! Hot chocolate oozing over the other strawberries and then cools down!! Sooo yummy

Kristina P.

Google
We ordered hot chocolate and the chocolate covered "walking strawberries." Everything was delicious! There was a slight wait, but nothing outrageous considering the volume of customers in the store at the time. Great place!

Google
I was so disappointed in my purchase! I bought eight of the sea salt caramel chocolate toffees. The caramel is all crystallized and the toffee is soft. They aren't even worth eating. I would love to get a refund for my purchase. Edit: Thank you very much for sending me a new batch of toffee! I appreciate your prompt action! The new toffee is delicious!

Dairek Y.

Google
Absolutely wonderful experience! The chocolate is delicious, and the fresh strawberries are amazing. The lady working there is super welcoming, always smiling, and makes you feel right at home. The store is spotless and inviting. Highly recommended—I wish I could give more than 5 stars!

Yelp
Plenty of places in Michigan do ice cream and fudge, but not all places do toffee, let alone over twenty varieties of them! They also had chocolate dinosaurs, turtles (not the animal), truffles, and caramels to a name a few. You'd be hard pressed NOT to find something to satisfy your sweet tooth here. Service was welcoming and friendly. The toffee pieces came out to be around $2-3 apiece, but worth it, in my opinion. We ended up getting an eight-piece box of the dark chocolate cherry toffee. Have you ever had cherry toffee? Me neither, which is why I was such a tourist and got them. They had samples at the door to try, so I knew what i was getting myself into. If you're going to get cherry flavored things, get it from the state with the cherry capital of the world.

Yelp
Adorable chocolate shop that sells fudges, truffles, peanut butter cups, toffees, chocolate bombs, clusters, & even chocolate dinos! They sell hot coco as well but the specially made kind is only available on the weekends including Friday. The chocolates are hard in texture. I really had to chomp down on my truffle to get into it. They called it a hazelnut truffle but aside from those thin drizzles on the outside, I don't think there was anything hazelnut about it. The chocolate itself was fine. The peanut butter containing pieces were not overwhelming in PB taste which was good. The toffee was a journey, good or bad. Chocolates are priced $27.99/lb, truffles are $3.25 each, and toffee is $3.12 a piece. The worker was nice, she was quick & answered all questions.

Yelp
I had the walking strawberries with melted chocolate. Delish! The place was packed, the line moved quickly, and the people were friendly. A must visit for first timers and an every visit for chocolate lovers.

Yelp
It's chocolate heaven in here. You'll find chocolate covered Oreos and Twinkies and other chocolate-covered things, truffles, caramel turtles, taffy, toffee, about 20 different kinds of fudge, popcorn and lots more. There was even a gal in the corner making things -- it looked like she was pouring chocolate into molds. Zak & Mac's is located in River Place Shops, a very cute outdoor shopping center in Frankenmuth. You can snag a sample if you ask nicely, but you will probably walk out of this confection shop with something (or lots of somethings), because there are lots of sweet treats everywhere you look.

Yelp
We stopped in to see the toffee and were interested is walking strawberries. Well, we bought toffee and we got walking strawberries! So delicious! The best warm chocolate poured or fresh strawberries. The service was perfect! Thank you April. It's a super cute shop.

Yelp
We were looking to get ice cream after eating at Zenders. Walked in to one guy making fudge and another helping someone with their fudge purchase. I waited by the ice cream as husband wandered around store. Fudge guy saw me waiting. Counter guy finished up with his customer and walked over to fudge guy. Waited for someone to say something or come over, but no one did. Walked out and will never go back.

Yelp
I Agree Every City Must Have A Sweet Chocolate Candy Store! So here on S. Main St. in Frankenmuth, is Zak & Mac's which will Ah-maze plus satisfy one's Sweet Tooth. After visiting other stores in the area, this chocolatier store will entice your nose when walking by with the warm smell of chocolate making inside daily. The day before my birthday on September 16th, I certainly enjoyed myself walking around Zak & Mac's because of their many homemade confectionery chocolate treats: Toffee Bars for $4.99 - Buy 3 and Get 4th Free... 20 Flavors To Choose Zak Bars - Prices from $2.99 up to $3.50... 10 Flavors To Choose Including Chocolate Spicy, Sea Salt, & Dark Chocolate Turtles for $4.99 - Are created with a original Caramel Recipe... 4 Flavors Fudge Slabs - Prices $9.50 - Buy 2 Get 3rd Free... 17 Flavors 10 Truffle Flavors to Choose... Unfortunately I didn't buy to enjoy, so I'll be back here in October! :-) There is a Confections area with Taffy, Popcorn and of course Ice Cream. They also sell Sugar-Free candy, popcorn, turtles and almond patties. This location has gift boxes of their merchandise to buy or to order and ship to family and friends. Call to order at (989) 652-9331 or Check their website for more details and the different flavors of chocolates. www.zakandmacs.com. There are 5 locations in the state of Michigan. Hours: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM - Monday through Friday Hours: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM - Saturday & Sunday I certainly recommend this Sweet Business when visiting and shopping in the area of Frankenmuth, Michigan. The employee that I chatted with was April who showed great customer service at the counter and Free samples as well. Gloves & Mask on. *Also when walking inside is Herman the German who offers daily his tray with a Free Sample of Chocolate to try before shopping. Lastly, check out the past History and Journey about Zak & Mac on their website. Its an interesting story which started in the 1960's till 2016, new name but the same fantastic chocolates! My Sweet Photos are attached too!

Yelp
Delicious toffee! I live in Arizona and was visiting my uncle in Frankenmuth so I stopped in to buy some toffee, I'd never been here before. Can't wait till the weather is cold here so I can order some!
google avatar

Bob K.

Yelp
Great place to walk in for some warmth and some chocolate on a cold day of shopping. Great service and great staff! Would defiantly recommend stopping by when in Frankenmuth
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
The service was great and there were so many tasty treats that it was difficult to choose which ones we wanted. The shop is adorable and welcoming. We enjoyed ourselves there.
google avatar

Yelp
Tourist trap. It's a candy shop. However they say they have the world's largest toffee selection. I don't know how they came up with that. I have been to many others who say the same.
google avatar

Vincent L.

Yelp
Cute chocolate shop on the main street. Is the handmade chocolate truffles worth the money, to me, No. I try all the dark chocolate varieties and they are too sweet for me. Maybe I am used to Lindt chocolate as a baseline. It is also $2.80 for one truffle if I remember correctly

Larry M.

Yelp
Incredible selection of toffee! We got two of everything for a party and everyone enjoyed all the flavors!!!! So good!
google avatar

Janeen R.

Yelp
Amazing toffee the BEST I have ever had so many unique choices! Friendly and helpful staff too. the smells are free so enjoy looking!

Yelp
First off, I love the aesthetic here! The visuals, the signage, all of it is so cute! It really speaks to me on an artistic level. I think a lot of this rebranding is newer because I haven't been here in a few years and I didn't remember it looking like that before, but I like it! Great job, Zak & Mac's! It looks awesome. But that's not the only thing I like about the place. The area with staff making fudge and other confections made on site are fun to watch and the selection of sweets is delightful. The free samples are dope (OMG THE TOFFEE) and the selection is killer if you have a sweet tooth like myself. They specialize in the the aforementioned toffee but there's also fudge, caramel corn, caramel apples, and other chocolate treats like turtles, chocolate dipped s'mores, chocolate dipped Oreos, and chocolate dipped pretzel rods if you like a bit of salty with your sweet. They also have warm drinking chocolate to order (think hot chocolate meets a chocolate soup) and bottled water and sodas if you need something more thirst quenching. As delightful and tasty as it gets!
google avatar

Yelp
This particular location makes the ice cream cones and if you ask them, they will even give you a taste! Great selections of fudges and toffees, we ordered few to go. We tried the toffees once we got home and they were outstanding!

Yelp
I have a weakness!! Well multiple weaknesses but Frankenmuth fudge at Zak's is my #1 weakness. After having dinner we decided to walk around and burn some calories. I had my plan already in motion to visit Zak's and get some peanut butter fudge. Sooo Good!! I knew I had won when we walked by Zak's and I got stopped and asked if we could go inside. I heard her say the words ( It smells so good ). Yes it does I said and the fudge sampling began. The girl waiting on us was sweet and very helpful. She helped us sample 4 different fudges but we both settled and moose tracks and peanut butter fudge. The store is hospital clean and the service was really good. The store is in a great spot in the river place shopping plaza across the bridge. It's the first store when entering the plaza. If your in Frankenmuth try all the fudge Frankenmuth shops have to offer but save your business for Zak's if you want the best fudge.

Yelp
So, in Frankenmuth there are a lot of fudge shops. Usually, it seems that most people stop in at Zak's Fudge because it is near the other shops. We actually stopped into a different fudge shop first for my sister. The line was insane at that one, and I didn't stay in long. Everyone was cutting in front of each other and shoving each other. It seemed like the line was everywhere and unorganized. I am not a fan of tight spaces at all. So, I stepped outside for a breather. I was a little upset, but figured we could stop by later at the shop to buy some. Luckily, I ended up here. We saw this shop after walking around on the street and stopped in. I was excited to see that they sold fudge! It's a much tinier store and it was not busy at all! There was no line. No one inside. It is a chocolate house, so they have a lot of chocolate as well. I got to try a few different kinds of fudge, and I decided to buy my own. By the way, it tasted amazing. One block lasted us a week. It's not something you eat a lot of, so it goes a long way. They didn't have as many options as the other two shops we saw, but they still had popular options that most people buy. So, if you want no line and the same fudge as the other shops, then stop in here. Also, herman the german is a nice guy. Got a picture with him!

Yelp
Stopped in to get some fudge for a few people and had some nice stuff! We sampled a few flavors and bought 3 lbs of fudge by the end. They were all really good and definitely recommended, but it was quite a bit softer than the fudge I'm used to getting. Nothing a little fridge treatment can't fix, and it's more of a personal preference anyway, but just a heads up. They also have a nice selection of candies. I can't comment on the quality but they certainly looked appetizing. The staff were helpful and friendly, and overall we were pleased with our purchases.
google avatar

Amber B.

Yelp
Really below average fudge. Hard as a rock. When asked about pricing, she said they don't have pricing. They weight it, but it's "usually" around $11. Save your money.
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
Excellent products! Their toffee is made in small batches in copper kettles. They had a huge variety both dark and milk chocolates. They also have turtles, Carmel apples and fudge. This is the best place for chocolates in Frankenmuth! Very good pure quality ingredients to make all these items.
google avatar

Lonny B.

Yelp
Nice candy store, not very big, and no one in there making fudge. They have a small variety of fudge, lots of toffee, and some small items, such as truffles dipped apricots, dipped marshmallows on a stick, peanut butter cups....I thought it would be bigger with fudge making in process, but no. this was the Main Street location. the Fudge Shoppe a few doors down had a bigger selection of fudge
google avatar

Billy L.

Yelp
Amazing selection of goodies and they have 2 locations. This particular location is in the River Walk area and there is another along Main Street. I haven't had anything bad here!!!

Mary B.

Yelp
Our first visit to this place of business was mind boggling. Extremely poor customer service !! My husband placed his order while I was still browsing. When I was ready to place my order, the counter person refused to take my order. She said, the person that was making my husband's order, also had to take my order. There was no one else in the shop and this person was not waiting on anyone. She said, it was store policy not to help the co-worker. I asked her, if we had walked in as a party of five, would she have helped her work mate? She said, only if she was buried. What the hell happened to taking care of guests? I have never heard of such nonsense. The ice cream wasn't worth the wait and poor, slack service.

Yelp
Really awesome chocolatier in Frankenmuth, I went in here and bought 2 fudges and 2 toffees. Fudge 1) Michigan pot hole - cleverly named 2) sea salt dark Carmel - ended up being my favorite. I bought 2 s'mores toffees as s'more is one of my favorite things/flavors and they were pretty good. Not AMAZING but good. This seemed a lot more modern and nicer on the inside compared to other places down here, but was also a lot smaller. I wonder if the other fudge shops had more to offer... If it wasn't so hot and I wasn't on a time crunch to get up north from this pit stop I would've looked around more. All in all staff was friendly, and I'd come back!
google avatar

Beth H.

Yelp
The front stoop was still under construction when I stopped in, but nothing was going to keep me away from a toffee shop! Oh my favorite candy. They have so many flavors to offer! Cute little shop that focuses on toffee bars, but take a good look around - I missed the caramel apples until after I had already checked out. I bought three boxes of assorted bars for myself and two friends. The attendant was so sweet, she was on a sugar rush for sure. Toffee shops are rare and there is one in Frankenmuth, right on Main Street, across from the visitor center. Make a point to stop it. The candy is amazingly good.
google avatar

Ruth F.

Yelp
Sells fudge, brittles, chocolates, truffles, taffy and candied nuts. The truffles are of the giant American type, larger than a golf ball and to my mind too sweet. The chocolates include giant 2" x 2" squares of caramel. They sell Frankenmuth Fudge Kitchen fudge (as does everyone around here) , and cones of candied nuts (walnuts and pecans). I haven't seen candied pecans lots of places and candied walnuts aren't that common either. They were tasty, a bit more on the chewy than crisp side. $5.99 for the smaller cone, which is a bit steep but worth it; the spouse and I devoured them in an evening.
google avatar

Janna N.

Yelp
Fudge was so soft, it was like eating chocolate frosting. Not good for $20/lb!!! It was $10 for one slice, which I assume is 8 ounces but it might've been 4 ounces.

Katherine J.

Yelp
Bought fudge (3 flavors), assorted chocolate, and toffee. The fudge was very stale. We ate some but ended up throwing it away. The chocolate was below average. The toffee was the only item I actually enjoyed. I mean my kids wouldn't even eat the fudge... The shop itself was very cute, but next time I'm in Frankenmuth I'll be visiting a different fudge shop.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
Excellent chocolate! Very smooth, sweet and addicting. The young man behind the counter was friendly, helpful, and gave us a sample of each of the many toffees. The toffee, by the way, comes in giant bars, melts completely in your mouth, and they provide a huge assortment of flavors. This place has ruined me for toffee elsewhere. My husband got a peanut butter puck... and it's exactly as advertised. Rich, smooth peanut butter enrobed in that awesome chocolate. It took him a few days to finish it off. Don't let the mediocre ratings of other Yelpers who don't understand how the rating system works fool you... this place is worth a try.
google avatar

Janis W.

Yelp
Had stopped in Frankenmuth for lunch on our way north for vacation. Anything called "Kandy Haus" gets our attention, so we had to stop. Right when you walk in you see people making candy and fudge which is neat, plus they have free samples right there by the door. We bought some seafoam candy and some toffee - both were excellent! Would stop here again!
google avatar

Can I.

Yelp
Great chocolate shop. All kinds of different style chocolate items. Big portions. Very friendly and nice staff. Central location. Must stop here if you are in town.
google avatar

Katie F.

Yelp
Drove all the way to Frankenmuth and bought hard fudge from Zack & Mac's. What a disappointment. The classic fudge was the hardest of the three that I bought. You would think it would have been the freshest since it's a popular flavor.
google avatar

N N.

Yelp
This is the first time coming to this fudge house. They had a special buy 3 slices and get the 4th free. All together I spend about $22 which is not a bad price. The lady helping us was very nice and pleasant. I would definitely go back and it's not too far from Zender's restaurant.
google avatar

Liz M.

Yelp
I've been to Frankenmuth dozens of times and I don't know why but this place is my chosen fudge shop. I usually grab a couple slabs of fudge, I get my husband one of their yummy and huge peanut butter buckets ( it's like a Reese's cup ), and I get myself a piece of chocolate covered toffee. Yummy!!
google avatar

levramosis H.

Yelp
Best chocolate peanut butter fudge in Frankenmuth.

Dave W.

Yelp
I continue to tell my friends... I can't keep a figure like this without eating Zak and Mac's Toffee. The customer service is amazing. Oh and have you tried the chocolate covered espresso beans? Oh man!

larry c.

Yelp
We purchased the Peanut Brittle on a recent trip to Frankenmuth. It was the most horrible and foul tasting candy I have ever eaten. We were already many miles from the store when we opened it and thus unable to return it. It tasted as though it had been on the shelf for years and was totally inedible. What a waste of money. Stay away unless you can ssee them making it.

Timothy B.

Yelp
Purchased 3 slabs of different flavored fudge, each one was hard, found out when we returned home, wouldn't buy from again

Rita H.

Yelp
I Was in Frankenmuth July 30th,2011 on vacation with my daughters. We went to Zak's because we wanted to bring some candy home with us. I bought their Pecan pattie covered with carmel and dark chocolate. This is the best chocolate I have ever eaten. I wish I had bought a lot more. Their dark chocolate fudge is also the best. I have eaten a lot of candy, but this tops all of them
