Solid 3 star for the food. We ordered the cod for 2 and got kilos of chickpeas covering the cod which was maybe cooked? We were the first or 2nd after they opened so maybe they were not ready. The waiters had a great time talking super loudly with each other, enjoying their company and maybe planning the world order. Us on the other hand tried without luck to eat the cod in a sea of chickpeas. Credit to them the chickpeas were great just a few too many, maybe for 20 tables worth. Anyway go there but know what to expect. For a 2 star experience try the salad.

Very very good food! We loved the bifinhos with garlic, the portions are huge! And price was great for the quantity and quality. Loved it! Staff was very friendly

This place was recommended by Lonely Planet so I walked all the way just to try it. It’s big a fancy place but it is rightly what I wanted to experience as a tourist. The portion is huge - I took my time and was able to finish half a portion plus a dessert, but I didn’t need a dinner that day. I also tried out green wine, apparently unique to Portugal. I liked everything I had and if you are also travelling in Lisbon you may wanna give it a go of what I had.

We visited this restaurant on Monday, just after 12:00 PM. In the second room, which has tables for larger groups, there was no one there yet. The order was taken very efficiently, and the dishes also appeared on the table quickly. We ordered cod, liver, and beef kebab. We knew the portions would be large, and the waiter additionally informed us of this fact. However, what arrived on the table far exceeded our expectations. The portions were simply gigantic. Probably one portion could feed 4 or maybe even 5 people. We took the food to go, and we still couldn't finish it for dinner, even though there were six of us. The food was very tasty, although quite fatty (olive oil and butter), so not very diet-friendly. We particularly liked the kebab, additionally served with a huge platter of fries. Unfortunately, after such a hearty meal, we were no longer able to order desserts. However, we did order espresso for good digestion, and it was excellent. The place has an authentic atmosphere and is definitely worth visiting.

Overpriced and overhyped. We had a codfish for 42€. The portion was huge but it consisted mainly of chickpeas, there was not much fish. It fills you but it’s nothing special. Go to the Time Out market for a better food.

We arrived at around 1:30pm on Saturday and were seated within 30 minutes which was less time than we’d expected. Our server (Vinicius) was delightful and explained the menu to us very well. You can order half portions of their dishes so we ordered their two most popular ones. After visiting and now knowing, we definitely would have been fine ordering one half portion for two because you get A LOT of food. I didn’t take a photo of the plate of fries that came with the steaks but it was massive… We loved the service and general vibe of the restaurant but the food fell a bit flat for us. The first bites were tasty and then it all became a bit much. The cod is very salty so would pair well with some rice and although the steaks had been recommended and ordered to be medium-rare, most of the pieces we received were medium-well done and quite dry. Others have commented about being charged about the olives and cheese without asking for them but we honestly thought they were the highlight of our meal - they were some of the best olives we’ve ever eaten! The amount of food you get for the price you pay is hard to beat though - make sure you come here hungry!

Google
One of the recommended spots for Bacalhau. I suggest pairing it with wine for the best experience. The portion is meant for 2 people, but honestly, it's more than enough for 2 to 4. The restaurant got quite busy shortly after we arrived. It’s a bit cramped inside, but there’s the option to sit outside if you prefer a little more space. I had mixed feelings about the taste of this dish. It definitely leans heavily on the salty side and has a noticeable oiliness. The flavor leaves a lingering, calm saltiness in your mouth.

We took the fish of the day (Grilled sardine) and codfish, it was excellent and the portions are extremely generous, they take only cash.

Yelp
Small spot with incredible food! If you're hungry, come here for their beef with garlic (or really anything on the menu), you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
This place has HUGE servings. The fish was delicious- perfectly salty and flavored. We really enjoyed the many different vegetables included as well, from the tomato salad to the cabbage and potatoes. My husband loved the salad dressing and I loved the garlic cooked cabbage. Who knew simple seasonings could go such a long way? We also got a bottle of their Electrico Ze de Mouraria- a nice light white that pairs well with the fish. We sat outside; the weather was perfect and the buildings provide enough shade so that there's no struggling to see. We enjoyed our meal a lot!

Yelp
Huge sharable plates for seafood and meats. They are accompanied with good French fries and salad. The place is cozy inside very traditional feel and the service is great. The outside seating area is also very cool. We chose the fish of the day and the flame grilled it to perfection. They accompanied that with grilled sardines and roasted potatoes. We also order the beef with garlic, it was great! I will certainty come back here! They speak English and take credit cards. They also bottle their own wine which very good.

Yelp
When the restaurant tells you the portion is big, listen to them...! * * * EXPERIENCE * * * Super rainy Tuesday and we took subway to this place, it's located in a small alley but not difficult to find. The vibe felt like it's a family owned business and every staff was super nice and smiled to us. We tried to order two dishes but were politely reminded multiple times that the portion of each dish is big so we ended up ordering just one, minus the salad. * * * FOOD * * * Grilled Rib (Tuesday's special): A We couldn't decide what to get so decided to go with the special menu of the day, as when we were walking in we saw how the chef was wooden fire grilling the rib and looked tasty - and it was! It's very crunchy on the outside with just the right amount of burnt skin taste, the meat was super juicy which the juice was locked inside the meat. I just couldn't stop picking up another piece and keep eating... you have to try this dish. Porridge/Rice with beans: A It came with the ribs, the taste reminded me of Mexican food but the spice they used added a bit saltiness, and the watery texture went well with the dry ribs. Salad: A Tomato, lettuce and onion with olive oil, when the ingredients is fresh you can just do simple things with it and it would taste great. It's a pity that I couldn't taste another dish this time, but definitely would go back to try either their duck rice or cuttlefish next time!

Yelp
giving one star because of the cheap management and customer service. I heard the food was very good so I went to try it with my family family. As we came to the restaurant I told the waitress that we are from a magazine and we are going to review about it on Google. She seemed very happy about it . I was wrong !!!!!! First of all we wanted to order some drink and had to wait for 10 minutes. When she brought the drinks she placed one drink wrongly on the table. So the glass fall and broke on top of the main dish, the food was full of brocken glass. She looked at us when it happened and she ignored the situation. After 10 minutes someone came and took the mess away. I thought that she would be grateful for the free advertising!!! But when I asked for the check, although we didn't get a new food or drinks. She didn't take the drinks or the food off, where the brocken glass was in!!! I had to pay for everything!!! I was very disappointed.!!!! The manager needs to understand how to treat the customers.

Yelp
Restaurant was tucked away in an alleyway somewhere and was quite a struggle to find with an inconspicuous entrance. I believe they are only open for lunch but they take reservations. My friend and I walked in around 1:30PM and luckily snagged a table. The restaurant itself is very homey and more of a local place. The family next to us was super friendly as they even offered us a taste of their veal. We were waiting for the waiter to translate the menu to us (the entire menu is in Portuguese but short menu). It was quite difficult to order due to the language barrier. The tomato salad platter was extremely fresh and juicy. My friend and I ordered the beef with butter pepper sauce, which is served in a large bowl (portion for two). Beef was served in cubes with enough sauce and was cooked well (medium rare). But watch out for those peppers hidden in the sauce when you take that bite! Overall, solid local place but a bit difficult to find.

Yelp
It is not easy to get here, but it's worth it! I came here on a Monday around 2:30 PM and this place was jam packed with a few groups waiting outside to be seated. Since we are a group of 2, it was easier for us to get a table. We got seated within 10-15 minutes of waiting. The server was not that attentive but I belive it is because they are just too busy! Some tables look like they are locals and some tables look to be tourists just like us. We went for a jar of red wine. We also ordered tomato salad, beef in a big wok with butter & pepper sauce with a side of fries. It was good amount of food for 2 of us and we enjoyed it a lot. Especially the tomato salad. It was so refreshing, perfectly juicy, acidic, a little sweet and overall a very nice balance for our buttery, savory, and heavily flavored beef. The fries were good as well, perfectly salty and bigger in size and nice and crispy. It was a LOT of fries. Overall an amazing experience but I wouldn't give it a 5 star because I'm happy we tried this place but I don't think it is worth waiting for over 30 minutes here for a table. If you plan to visit, try calling ahead for a reservation. They do accept reservation here (we just didn't know).

Yelp
Great restaurant that is a little bit hidden from the Alfama tourist madness. This place was recommended by our tour guide for having delicious traditional food and large portions, and it did not disappoint in regards to either! We had duck rice, their daily special, and it was delicious and satisfying. It came served in a HUGE dish for the table, with at least two pounds of moist and flaky duck meat. Everything was cooked beautifully and the flavors blended together well. We got olives (usually I hate olives but these were salty and amazing), bread, and cheese to the table. Overall WAY too much food for just the two of us. Many have commented on the rate at which Alfama has become a tourist hotspot and lamented the loss of traditional life here. To us, this place seemed to hint at the "old Alfama" more than any other place we ate in Lisbon. There were other tourists for sure, but a large number of Portuguese presumably on their lunch breaks from work. The restaurant itself was not flashy, and it was clear the focus is on the food. That said, the interior was cute and warm. The combination of food and ambiance, against the backdrop of historical Alfama made this a meal I will certainly not forget.

Yelp
Nice authentic atmosphere. Pretty decent food. Great "drunken marmelo" sweet. Not inexpensive.

Yelp
This was the most delicious meal I have ever eaten. The portions are HUGE and are best split by 2-4 people. I ate here by myself and barely made a dent. Many of the people at the restaurant made reservations here for their lunch, but luckily I walked in and got a table. Another patron offered to explain what was on the menu. I got one of the seafood dishes and tried another one. Both were AMAZING. Filled with garlic and cooked perfectly. There were two pieces of bread in the bowl that had been soaked in the sauce, it was the best thing I had ever tasted. I got a carafe of red wine and a meal big enough to feed 4, bread, olives for 23 Euro. I didn't see a single tourist in the place, which makes me think it is a good restaurant that locals pack each day at lunch. I've eaten at a few other places on yelp and haven't found any restaurants or dishes that hold a candle to this one. Unfortunately I don't know what I had, I Can't read their handwriting on the menu, but I believe it was some type of small shark. I also had the Choco, which was delicious as well. Look for the swinging green doors, and take the time to come eat at this place. Lunches seem to last at least 2 hours here. I can't recommend it enough.

Yelp
I am glad I found this authentic Portuguese spot. When we got there, it was lunch time and we were a little taken aback since it was in a small alley and guys were just standing around in the front. We went to the swing doors and tried to peek in. It was empty with only a table of two. We went in and we saw these flies (not the normal kind) congregating in groups. We decided to stay anyway and the waiter asked if we had a reservation. Nope. He had us sit by the entrance at the end of the communal table. As we sat, I contemplated if I made a bad decision to stay. The flies were flying on top of all the tables. The waiter came back again and recommended a special bacalao dish and said all their dishes are big and that one would be enough. We went with the bacalao dish and as we waited for our dish, more people started coming in. Soon enough, the place was filled. When the food came, it was glorious. It was a huge plate of food even for two people. We immediately started to work on it. The dish was rather simple but the fish was flavorful. It's salted but wasn't too salty and the cilantro, fried garlic, and onion infused oil elevates the texture of the fish making it silky smooth. The chickpeas were cooked through enough so that it's firm enough but also mushy tender when you eat it. There were small baked potatoes as well but I wasn't crazy about them. I wish I could try more dishes from this place but with huge family style dishes, we only finished half of the fish and took the rest back for dinner. And the fish tasted even better having been marinated in the oil longer. The best part is that the dish cost less than 20 Euros. Considering we had it for lunch and dinner, it was 10 Euros per meal. Despite the location and the flies, this place has some good Portuguese food and I'd love to return for that bacalao some day!

Yelp
Best duck rice I had in my life! This "hole in a wall" place was recommended to us by a fellow traveler and it's definitely worth a visit (or several ). The prices are for 2 persons. Duck rice was 17.50€ - the portion was easily for 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 kids. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Sergio G.

Yelp
The food was great but they over charged us 20 euros extra for sea bass for no reason. They just said it was an error but in the menu the fish was 20 euro cheaper. Tourists be careful

Brynda M.

Yelp
The place is literally across the alley from our ab&b, and was highly recommended by the guy who provided our laundry service.

Yelp
I can't talk about the food because I never got to try it, but I can talk about my experience trying to eat here. When I arrived the place was super crowded, there were people waiting outside, this was a Friday at 3pm. I told the waiter that I needed a table for 2 and he proceeded to write my name on a list and told me to wait outside and that they will call me when they had my table. So I waited outside for about 20 min and they start calling people that were before me on the list until it was just me and another 2 person party. I waited for about 10 more minutes and a Chinese couple stood behind me in front of the door so I told them to go to the waiter so he would write their name on the list, so they wouldn't wait in vain outside. To my surprise they entered the restaurant and where seated immediately, so I went inside and told the waiter that I was on the list and that I should be seated first he told me I can get you a table but I have to clean it, I said ok, but he proceeded to give menus to the Chinese couple, bring a beer to another table and attend to other people while I waited. Finally I seat down, he sets the table and instead of giving a menu and taking my order he proceeds to attend to other tables. I call his attention and he says just a minute and continues doing other stuff, to his defense he was the only one attending customers but still I should have had a table and a menu in my hands long time ago. There was another lady that came out but went directly to where the Chinese were seated and didn't look serve anybody else, meanwhile a couple of guys who are regulars there and arrived after me got their meals in a few minutes. Anyway I got tired of waiting and the bad service and left without saying anything. Maybe the food is good but not worth it to beg for food no matter how good it is.

Yelp
Must be one of the best restaurants in Lisbon, hard to find in a local neighborhood but worth the effort. Not a tourist magnet.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a delicious hidden gem in Lisbon. We came here twice in our short visit. The garlic steak is amazing I am going to try to recreate when I get back to US but I doubt I'll ever get there! The French fries and salad are also delicious. Make sure to get the bread, chorizo, and cheese first- sooo good! Can't say enough good things about this spot.
google avatar

Eddie I.

Yelp
Really great food! Very good value. Has a very authentic Portuguese feel. It is tucked away in an alley so it is pretty easy to miss. Order one dish for two because the portions are so large that they are more than enough for two.
google avatar

C S.

Yelp
The food was good, not great. We had the special of the day: ribs, which were a bit salty. They gave us bread and cheese without telling us it was NOT part of the meal. We were charged extra. The owners and staff were sitting down for lunch and all were smoking! I find it rude and odd to smoke inside restaurants. Finally, we asked for to-go (take away) boxes and looking at the final bill we saw they charged us for those too! The waiter did not tell us there was an extra cost for containers. We asked they owner about the charge, he was rude and said too bad essentially. Overall, I won't come back and you're not missing anything.

Yelp
So good! Davide was awesome. We had the Plate of the day.. which was served with bread, cheese, olives, a sausage appertivo and then the main course of grilled pork. Huge portions, one plate for the two of us could of probably served four. Don't be embarrassed to ask for to go. They will happily box up. The Port was a great start and white wine flowed. Place gets packed. Wonderful little restaurant tucked away in the alleys of Mourmaria.

Yelp
Great stuff, both locations. Order the local specials. We always ask for a bit less salt, otherwise fantastic food and wine. Great job.

Yelp
This was an incredible place. No sign, just the green swinging doors and a packed restaurant inside. Full of locals, we were told the special was calamari or duck rice- we took the duck rice. It was delicious, and 15€ for two people. A bottle of green wine for 10€, two coffees and olives to start, our total was 29€ for a wonderful meal. A bit tricky to find, but totally worth it.
