Yelp
Judged as a CA coastal restaurant with somewhat elevated food, it comes up not bad at all, right alongside its neighbor on the same block, the Beeside Balcony. We have visited on Friday, last-moment reservations (by phone only!) were possible.
The place is very good if this restaurant is treated as a place for appetizers and cocktails, many appetizers represent the (much) improved familiar finger food (I particularly liked the fish tacos in its "fried" incarnation). When ordering the main dishes, the kitchen hiccups become visible: long delays, uninspiring results. With main dishes, expect a $70 bill per person for a dinner with a drink (cocktails are in a $14-$18 range).
Ambience is quite good considering the location (on the side of a major throughfare few small blocks away from the beach with no major view). The space is divided into three parts, all classic California coastal chic: true outdoor seating (with glass walls insulating from the wind and the hassle of the street), a large room with roof and glass walls somewhat away from Camino Del Mar (technically still outdoors, but does not feel like it), and a smaller room with the bar, music, and action. The lighting is creative (I would not divulge the details, explore on your own). Level of noise (excluding live music, see below) is just right - it is hard to overhear the other tables, but there is no need to strain one's voice talking to your (small) party.
Tips:
* street parking on the busy days is somewhat a challenge, try the opposite side of the Camino Del Mar (the one closer to the ocean) and side street s there;
* for us, the live music was a nuisance, so I would suggest avoiding these times or at least seat far away from the musicians.
Overall: good for an informal dinner with a small group of friends, casual date.
