On the Grid : Zen Vegetarian House

"Zen Vegetarian House serves up the best Chinese food in the neighborhood despite the fact that they don't serve any meat products. It's a small location that's most popular for take-out or delivery, but if you decide to eat in their service is always so sweet. For vegetarians, this place is a haven in PLG, and for the rest, we promise you won't even miss the meat." - Erin Mercurio & Jak Horner

"Late dinner. Edamame, sweet-and-sour vegan chicken, and a slice of carrot cake from Zen. First, people would call avocado a superfood, then kale became a superfood, and this year it’s vegan carrot cake. The frosting is in the shape of a carrot."

Google
Menu is all vegetarian. Seems to be mostly vegan; not sure which items might not be vegan. I got the lunch special General Tsos Chicken. It’s white rice with soy chicken chunks with couple of broccoli. Came with a spring roll. Overall a decent price for the food. Wasn’t able to eat it all, granted I drank a lot water due to the weather. Place is close to prospect park so you can do a after meal walk

Luna Cat

Google
One of my favorite spots! They have great lunch specials and the cheese cake is so good. I usually get the general toas lunch special with a soup and scallion pancakes as an appetizer.

Google
Very highly recommend for any vegetarian or vegan or if you don’t eat meat. Even if you do I would go here. Lunch special is definitely worth it and the mango dishes are so good. Fresh juices are great too and super great and nice service.

11 dollar no beef no shrimps only some mushroom and some fake shrimp made of dough

Google
Two tables, cold inside, all plasticware. Basically Take-out and delivery. We went for the first time and everything was delicious! Service was prompt, polite and efficient. I ordered a meal to take home after we finished eating. Lunch special price was an excellent bargain. We'll definitely return. So many things on the menu I want to try!

Google
Ordered using Postmates and it took around 45 minutes during peak dinner hours. I ordered the Mango Soy Protein with white rice. Definitely enough for two meals as I'm sitting here with half my plate left to go. I also got the Scallion Pancake which came with sauce.

Google
One of the best vegan spots in the neighborhood. The lady at the front desk is always smiling and humorous. The food is incredible (chicken nuggets are my #1) and service is very quick. I usually order take out for pick up, have never stayed for a dine in.

Google
I miss eating here! I recommend it all the time. Those chicken nuggets taste better than chicken and I’m no vegan! Please open another location in Greenpoint/ Williamsburg pleaseeee. And the delevery man was so nice, I think he’s the owners son. Miss you all❣️

Yelp
In the neighborhood for one night and needed a quick and easy vegetarian meal. Popped in and had a delicious order of Gen Tso and spring rolls. Served fresh and quick. Super crispy tofu! I wish there was something as good as this close to my home.

Yelp
Chinese takeout that hits the spot. I had ordered from Zen Vegetarian before and recently gave them another try. Glad I did because this order was much more satisfying. The General Tso's is fiyah. The marinated soy chicken texture and flavor were on point. The vegan goddess stir-fry noodle was tasty. The Chinese broccoli and eggplant chili sauce rounded up the order. Gotta have those veggies. The only thing I'd wish for is to be easier to identify which dishes are vegan. The whole menu could actually be vegan. I am finding contradictory information online. If anyone knows, please share. Generous servings. Cash only.

Yelp
I ordered dinner from Zen via Uber Eats, and, I'm so happy I did! Everything was prepared fresh and to order, arrived steaming hot, with portions large enough to share or save for the next day. The protein fried rice will be a must with every order from now on, and the Singapore Mei Fun (a personal favorite) was fantastic, with flavors extremely reminiscent of the non-vegan version. Also, don't forget to order the Salt & Pepper 'Chicken'! You'll be happy you did :)

Yelp
Super tasty, with nuggets (and nugget sauce) that rival the classic ones from the now long gone Vegetarian Paradise 2. They're about 95% accurate to those, so if you miss those, you'll be in heaven. Really enjoyed the tofu garlic sauce as well. Will be getting from here more often.

Yelp
A very solid spot. When we lived in the area, it was convenient for the days we wanted to skip meat. I tried their Chicken Nuggets, Fried Wontons, Vegetable Lo Mein, Sesame Chicken, curry chicken, beyond burger, buddha bowl, sweet potato fries, and ribs. It can be heavy with all the sauces and frying as Chinese can be. Definitely recommend ordering dishes with more veggies instead of soy/tofu focused. My favs were the ribs, sesame chicken, and sweet potato fries, but I would like to try the mango chicken and drinks. A big perk was also being able to order takeout so I could pick it up on my way home. The staff was always friendly and food ready.

Yelp
A great place for vegan food. It's like a moment of zen kind of. Zen Vegetarian House is in Flatbush pretty close to Prospect Park. Had such a big menu for a small place so it's quite a hidden spot for the curious. There's lots of interesting things to choose from that look and taste a lot like the real thing. It has an all vegetarian menu. Seriously there's no need to ask them. The majority of things are also vegan. At lunch they have specials and you save a lot. The specials are about $7.50 and come with a choice of a spring roll or soup. I had the Eggplant With Soy Chicken and the spring roll. She had the Tofu Teriyaki. I thought it was excellent. Lots of the purple eggplant among other vegetables. Big pieces of the soy chicken. The spring roll was crispy and didn't taste like it was frozen like at many places. Eating inside is hard because it's very small so most people get carryout. It also isn't a wonderful area but it's not scary. This is one of the best choices in Flatbush for vegans.

Yelp
Tasty, affordable vegetarian Chinese food with generous portions and delicious seitan! I ordered here for the first time via Uber eats and it was just what I was hoping for: -large veggie wonton soup - very yummy and pretty filling since they stuff like 10 wontons in here. A great deal for $6.50 -black pepper seitan- this is a hefty portion. It's not spicy but has a nice peppery flavor. The seitan was nice and hearty. It tasted like they pan fried it a bit so it was a bit crispy. Note that this comes with Chinese broccoli - not regular- and a lot of it! Also cheap- $13 So glad I finally found a vegetarian Chinese spot that's on point in terms of flavor and value. I'll be ordering again!

Yelp
My vegan friend introduced me to this neighborhood find and I've been a huge fan since! The owner is the sweetest woman who will always provide recommendations if you ask. The "chicken nuggets" are great and the portions are pretty large considering the price.

Yelp
This is my new vege paradise. I will always stop by when visiting Brooklyn. I have never experienced such flavor in a vegan meal.
google avatar

Yelp
I've ordered take out from here a bunch. A great vegetarian Chinese food take out option for pretty cheap prices. Some dishes are a miss but I'm a big fan of the ribs and the lo mein.

Golda S.

Yelp
Pineapple fried rice! Quick good food. Protein based seasoned right. Quick delivery also. Not ideal for eating in.

Yelp
Excellent service! Super sweet folks who work here. Good food--the meat substitute was flavorful and moist. The sauces were a little overly sweet for me.

Yelp
I are from this establishment when they first opened years ago, however my husband wanted to try their food so we ordered online. We couldn't see if the order went through and when we attempted to call, the phone rang and rang and rang without anyone answering. Eventually, we got through after 45 mins and when they told us the food is on its way, the person that delivered the food left it on our porch. Didn't even ring our bell or called our number. If it wasn't for RING, we would have been waiting longer. Disappointed with their respond/service: and food,

K D.

Yelp
Great food but even better service! Always so friendly! My fav is the crispy chicken burger! And everything is affordable

Yelp
The chicken nuggets make my mouth water. Along with the sauce I can eat it all without sharing but I'll get back to the food in a few. 1st off I had to use the rest room badly and ran into this restaurant. No one turned up their face and said customers only which sold me. Inside reminded me of a typical chinese store. Nothing lavishing. However everyone was really kind. Besides the chicken nuggets I ordered the shrimp fried rice and chicken and broccoli with white rice. The food was excellent. I have no complaints. If you're vegan or vegetarian do not sleep on this spot. You wont be disappointed. Even if you eat meat give it a try.

Yelp
I mean everyone was SO NICE TO ME I CANT even. Food was def 3 stars but service and kindness to customers was a 5. The food is good but I've had better vegan Chinese food. I really liked the general tsos chicken but the chicken nuggets were not a win for me. They were a little rough/tough and I wasn't a fan of the sauce at all. On the other hand the deserts are AMAZING!! I love the fact they have soy based icecream and SOY MILKSHAKES. I had the Oreo soy milkshake if your not used to soy you won't like it but I LOVED IT!! I mean I would come back here but not for a little bit as it does bring that oily Chinese food factor surprisingly.. Go indulge I highly recommend if you never had vegetarian Chinese!

Yelp
One of these best vegetarian restaurants I have been too. I have eaten her several times and always enjoy the Mango Chicken. I have also had the Chicken Teriyaki and Beef & Broccoli. The service is amazing. People are super friendly and always ask if there is anything else I may need. Clean restaurant which always makes everything even better.

Yelp
This is a neighborhood rife with vegan Chinese food, and I'm curious to understand the context behind the market for it. My gut tells me this is not a new phenomenon driven by the zeitgeist of today's dietary restrictions, since vegan Chinese food has been around for a long time. In any case, this was the highest rated one in the area, and I walked past several similar restaurants for this one, the "best" one. My expectations were set low, and they were exceeded. I ordered the curry with seitan, potatoes, carrots, and broccoli. I found the sauce a little too sweet, but the portions were hefty and it was a satisfying enough meal, if you like this cuisine. The chicken nugget appetizer was really tasty even for my carnivorous partner who would never choose "chick'n" over the real animal. We also ordered the singapore style noodles, which are hard to mess up and were pretty good. I'm giving them an extra star because of the value delivered. We had enough food to last us two meals, and everything was pretty tasty.

Yelp
This has been our go-to takeout spot for almost two years. Food is always delicious, service is great. This is a very special spot. Last night, my partner ordered carrot cake & chicken nuggets for us but the restaurant was out of carrot cake. They offered to send it out today when they restocked & did! An incredibly generous offer and very appreciated. Thank you, Zen Vegetarian House.

Yelp
I have ordered from here so many times to count. The food is always delicious and warm upon arrival. the white rice and the brown rings are sooo good.
google avatar

Shanice W.

Yelp
Food is always flavorful here. I'm plant-based and don't soy so if anyone reading is like me, here are my favorite things to order: *Salt & Pepper oyster mushrooms (tip: ask for an extra sauce because one is not enough) *mixed veg noodle soup *steamed veggie dumplings *lo mein with veggies (I say no onions cuz that's a bit overwhelming in there for me)
google avatar

Miles D.

Yelp
Literally everything was delicious. The "chicken" and broccoli was the best vegan version ever. I did find the faux meat a bit chewy, so I would recommend cutting it into smaller pieces and not eating it like a feral animal (like I did). Chocolate cake was perfect! Moist and a BIG slice. Lo mein was perfectly cooked and filled with vegetables, but not enough to the point where I felt I had gotten little to no noodle. Food was well packed and served warm.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Bad... general tsos had little substance, only breading. It was swimming in liquid and soggy. Also, far too sweet.
google avatar

Ms. Alicia K.

Yelp
I'm not a vegan however I thoroughly enjoy vegan food at this establishment! The food flavors at this place is SO GOOODDDD!! Prices are reasonable in my opinion. Orders are placed quickly. I usually get the "Mango Chicken (not really chicken) w/ brown rice.
google avatar

Erica J.

Yelp
I really like this place, The Asian lady that usually works the front is really Nice and helpful suggestions. I've tried the Mango chicken, Udon noodles, General tso chicken (which is ok, but I'm not into soy based) teriyaki Seitan with snap peas (good! Pic posted) and raspberry white chocolate cheesecake (only thing I didn't like because, again, soy based made it tase so weird, I prefer cashew nut) I really like the pineapple fried rice too but my all time favoriteeeeeeeee at this place is the " Salt and pepper king oyster mushrooms" omggg!!! I kept this a secret for a while. I usually create my own meal by doing the following order: King oyster mushrooms, Small white rice & General tso's SAUCE only... annnd... whaa-laa... perfect guilt free, savory, sweet, crunchy tasty satisfying meal!

Yelp
Edit: I've been here a few times since my first review and everything I've tried since has been really delicious and convincing. Their lunch special is a great option if you're in the area! *** I was super excited to come here. Can't say I'm disappointed because I only had three things and they weren't horrible, but just alright. I got miso soup which had way too much seaweed, too firm tofu, and no scallion. Also, a strong miso flavor- not the mild soup I'm used to. The general tsos chicken LOOKED extremely impressive. It tasted pretty good too. The sauce was a bit on the watery side but I really appreciated the taste of the mock chicken. To top it all off I got a smoothie, which was good! I wish they added ice though lol. Overall, id come here again to try out some other stuff. My next feat is their chicken nuggets!
google avatar

Marissa C.

Yelp
This is my favorite restaurant! I'm not even vegetarian, but this place is the best. My favorite is the chicken nuggets and mango chicken. Their desserts are also amazing. Highly recommend!!
google avatar

Nakia S.

Yelp
The food was delicious! I'm not a vegetarian and I loved every bite. Didn't even taste like tofu, however, I did notice the different consistency. The restaurant itself looks like a Chinese take out joint. There's small tables to dine but, I noticed most orders where to go. Very dim lighting inside but, it appeared clean and welcoming. The staff was very nice... The chicken nuggets everyone seems to enjoy was blah for me. They seemed rubbery and a bit tasteless. The mango chicken and the curry chicken was ALL DAT!!! Nom nom
google avatar

Patti E.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! Let me start by saying I AM NOT A VEGETARIAN. Many moons ago a friend of mine bought Mango Chicken and white rice from Zen. I decided to try it. Let's just say I have been hooked ever since!!! It's been almost 4 years :) In addition to great food, they have incredible customer service. When I was pregnant I craved mango chicken a lot! I would call & place an order often. They would come to my car for the payment then come back with the food. What restaurant do you know that does that?? ZEN does.... give them a try! You will love the customer service & of course the food.

Yelp
Food always arrives hot, and tasty vegan burritos are the best vegan tres de leche is to die for. Always enjoy their food.
google avatar

Hadassah B.

Yelp
I'm giving this place two stars simply for attempting to provide vegetarian cuisine. I was in the area for a concert and put up a post on FB asking for vegan/vegetarian restaurant suggestions in the area. This was the first place that was recommended. I did not enjoy my food. Correction, the brown rice was edible. I ordered the orange chicken with brown rice. While the portion size is decent, I was extremely disappointed in the hard texture of the soy chicken. The sauce wasn't bad. I'm no stranger to soy products. The soy was overcooked and it was so hard to chew. It really ruined the experience. I wanted to like this place but the meal just fell short. I relayed my experience to the individual who suggested Zen and they told me that they had the same feeling about the orange chicken. She assured me that if I return, I will be pleased with something else like the mango chicken. Not sure that I will go back but i will keep her tip in mind if I do.
google avatar

Aubrey W.

Yelp
Ok. This place is amazing. If you are vegan, veg, or even if you aren't, this place is a MUST. I haven't eaten meat in several years, but my friend who does said the sweet and sour chicken tasted exactly like chicken, and the spring rolls were amazing! They are also so knowledgeable at the counter about what is in the food, and my friend, who often has problems with this kind of food due to her many allergies, felt completely safe and didn't have any reactions at all! And the dessert. That peanut butter bomb, WOW. Go out of your way to get to this place!!!
google avatar

Saba N.

Yelp
Everything here is vegan !! which I love literally anything in a regular Chinese restaurant menu you can find it here. I usually get a to go order placement over the phone because the ordering through yelp doesn't show the full menu. It's missing a lot different noodles they offer and appetizers. They even have healthy juices and soy ice cream , pistachio is really good. My order to go is any lo mein veg or chicken, it's pretty good. I once got the Shanghai style curry lo mein was good flavor but after it wasn't warm anymore turned gritty in texture so I'll pass on that. For appetizers Oyster mushroom and chicken nuggets are really good; meanwhile spring rolls are okay not much flavor without the sauce. Overall a solid 4 order to go place. One star less for oiliness of some appetizers. Service is fast even when ordered in the restaurant.
google avatar

Sacha S.

Yelp
So it was fairly good! I'm vegetarian so I'm always looking for options. The soy protein was good. I got it for delivery. I highly suggest this place. My only downside was the lack of salt/flavor. I recommend wonton soup!! So good. The portions were huge and it was affordable.
google avatar

Janie D.

Yelp
100% vegan Asian cuisine in Flatbush. The restaurant itself is very small, seating around 12 people total, with no restroom. It seems most of their business is delivery. Menu is primarily mock meat and Asian fusion dishes like tofu teriyaki, and a variety of plant based protein/rice/vegetable dishes. They also have a selection of vegan treats. Prices are very reasonable, and all credit cards are accepted. My friend and I each got a lunch special, which for $6.50 each was an incredible value. For this price I received a large portion of sesame "chicken", rice, steamed veggies, and hot and sour soup. The soup was not very good-too much salt, and not enough flavor. The mock chicken and veggies were very tasty. I also tried the mock duck and chicken nugget appetizers which were excellent. Highly recommended for vegans and omnivores alike-you really won't know the difference!
google avatar

Emily P.

Yelp
This place is my favorite. I have been eating here for over 5 years and their chicken nuggets are some of my go-to favorite vegan comfort food. They are delicious!! There are several similar Asian-vegan restaurants in the area but none of their nuggets compare to Zen. Some of our other favorites include: sugar cane drumsticks, roast duck, the sandwiches (comes with two!), scallion pancakes, and avocado salad for something fresh. The mains are good too but the appetizers are where it's at. Definitely recommend for vegans, vegetarians, and even our meat-eater friends ask to order from here.
google avatar

Area W.

Yelp
I'm a regular and have never had anything I didn't love! Sugarcane drumsticks, veggie dumplings and black pepper seitan are some of my faves. Always packaged well when delivered.
google avatar

Shawna E.

Yelp
I ate from this place 3 times since going vegan and it never disappoints. The soy protein options are delicious and I always order their veggie spring rolls. The first time we ate in the restaurant which is not too bad. The staff there are really friendly and was very patient with me while I decided what to order. The next two times were delivery. Seamless, grub hub and Uber eats all say they don't deliver to my location but after calling them directly, they came for a small delivery tip of $4.00 (same as those apps). The food is very well portioned, I always have leftovers. I also appreciated the fact that the food was hot each time it was delivered which meant the delivery person did not delay. I wish the pricing didn't go up after lunch time each day but it's still not too bad considering the size. I will def be eating from here again and recommend it to any vegan!
google avatar

Sindi S.

Yelp
My to go...weekend, lazy to cook, takeout food. The "chicken nuggets" and the soy ice cream...Hell Yea I'm hooked!!! I recently ordered the beef, broccoli and brown rice

Yelp
I have been meaning to check out a vegetarian Chinese Restaurant. I mostly eat vegetarian. I have been for about 6 years now. I stopped eating chicken altogether. Usually when I do eat meat, it's usually seafood. I missed Chinese food. Now I can enjoy it without eating meat! The food taste great! I had Orange Chicken. Tastes exactly like I remembered Orange Chicken. I can't wait to try the other dishes. Came with a friend and ate at the restaurant. They were very friendly and provided great customer service. Coming here with a friend is great, but it's more of a take out place than anything. Affordable, but the cost is definitely higher than average Chinese food. Perfect for a take out night on the couch with bae and Netflix (if bae isn't a meat eater of course lol).
google avatar

Ana D.

Yelp
-Hot and sour soup: mushroom, bean sprouts and tofu in a gooey/gelatiney broth. Seems like a thickening agent was added to simple broth to give that consistency. Mild "sour" flavor, not spicy (if that was what was meant by hot). Not sure if this is how hot and sour soup is supposed to be but I didn't care for this at all, mostly due to the consistency of the broth. - general lunch special comment: if you like the hot and sour soup or the spring roll then it's a good deal for the price. I dont care for either so it's not worth it for me -Eggplant soy chicken: okay. Comes tossed in the "classic" Chinese food take-out oily brown sauce (though a little less oily); if that's what you are going for then you'd like but it's not my thing hence my rating of just okay. - 2 scoop soy ice cream (butter pecan): was hesitant to get delivered as I was worried it would melt but many others on seamless didn't complain so gave it a whirl. Good texture, not really dense (like Haagen dazs for example) but not half air like store-brand ice cream. Flavor was pretty good and the size was good for $4. Would recommend.

Yelp
The phones are down, but the online ordering still works! I love this place so much that I walked all the way here to make sure they were OK. Grab some cash at the 24 hour bodega next-door and support this incredible establishment. I've been coming here since 2008. Fan favorites are chicken nuggets, salt and pepper mushrooms, and mango soy protein/chicken!!!! I'm not even a vegetarian!
google avatar

S. F.

Yelp
First time trying this place. Wasn't bad. Had the teriyaki seiten with mixed vegetables & brown rice. I'd say average Chinese food.
google avatar

Etaniel B.

Yelp
I've been to this place several times. I have ordered a few mock meat dishes, miso soups and noodle dishes. My favourites are miso soup and scallion pancakes. Zen is pretty standard for Veg Asian cuisine.
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
This photo is supposed to be their general tso's soy chicken. This is the first and last time I will order this. This soy chicken are squishy balls of flavorless chews. I don't even think they tried with this dish. The miso soup is good. Other dishes are way better too.
google avatar

Christian A.

Yelp
This place is awesome for trying to wean yourself off of meat. I'm not a vegetarian but I was amazed by how much the chicken nuggets and ginger chicken tasted like actual poultry. If you never try it you'll never know you have tasty alternatives all around you. Your overall health is counting on you to make better choices.
google avatar

O S.

Yelp
I was told by a friend that the food at the Zen was good, but it was Great!!! The sesame chik'n was very tasty and the spring roll was as well. The zucchini pancakes was kinda greasy but still good. The staff was nice and the place is clean. Overall, I had a good experience and I will come back to eat here with my family again.
google avatar

Yelp
I haven't stepped foot into the actual restaurant in years, but for delivery Zen Vegetarian is one of my go-tos. I generally get the spring rolls or avocado salad with a non-soy entree, but I have found lately that the brown garlic sauce used for the sauteed broccoli or sauteed mixed vegetables sauce is a bit too heavy for me and pops up on my skin. Unable to resist today's craving, I decided to order the sauteed broccoli with the instructions "Please cook without soy sauce" (because I am also plagued by food allergies, including soy and wheat), and was pleased to find my broccoli in a light/almost watery but flavorful garlic sauce. It was perfect. Take my advice Zen.... Add this "naked vegetables" entree to your menu with the option to make spicy. And provide a link to this review in case anyone considering it is on the fence.

Yelp
Tried several items based on other reviews but was mostly underwhelmed to disappointed. The chikn nuggets & General's was overcooked & difficult to chew. Mangos in the mango chikn were undercooked and was light on the chikn. Bland Chikn Teriyaki & Beef broccoli were almost indistinguishable taste-wise. The fish nuggets were slight improvement re: taste & texture but the Sesame chikn is what I'd recommend to most. Malaysian pancake (roti canai-ish except not flaky) was a greasy guilty pleasure. It came with a side sauce that reminded me of green pea soup/sauce that may be better suited with rice & veggies.
