On the Grid : The Zephyr Pub

"Zephyr is the quintessential Kent bar. While it’s great year-round, it’s best experienced in the summer, when college is out and you can sit out on the patio. They have string lights on the outdoor decks, and you can order Taco Tontos (by phone) and pick it up at the window on the patio." - Each + Every

Absolute banger of a bar and venue. What a great spot! Be sure to stop in, grab a drink, and check out some live music. DO IT!

Google
Love the Zephyr-- Especially Matt <3 I always have a blast when I come in. Love the patio and live music when available. One of my favorite spots in Kent!

Google
I was kicked out for being straight and white even after supporting performers of color and white. I was supportive to every performer but was kicked out for my sexuality

Google
It is a cheap dive bar that occasionally offers live music. The atmosphere here, though, is quite fun.

Google
This is a a great Pub! The patrons are chill and there to enjoy the time there. The night we went was 7/8/23 and there was live music on first floor, dance DJ on third floor and many people hanging out on patio. Returning to visit Kent as an KSU alum, this is a must! There are some patio games if so inclined. The DORA is also right around the corner. The selection of microbrews is excellent. The bartenders are attentive and friendly. They made a special drink for my friend celebrating a birthday. 🍹🥳Also- I literally saw a bartender cutting up a six-pack-can plastic ring holder before putting it into the trash! 🐠🐢🌊❤️ 🌎 It is my understanding that The pub does not serve food outside of chips and the collab with Taco Tonto’s next door.

Google
Fun multi level building with a bar on the first and third floors. A beautiful fenced off patio with multiple picnic tables, giant connect 4 and corn hole. Enjoyed two drinks here and lost two games of connect 4.

Google
Place is run by a bunch of pissed off almost-40-year-olds who still wear all black everyday because they didn't figure to how to match colors after their moms stopped dressing them.

Everything ResEvil

Google
Always meet cool people here. Prices are great! The layout of the place is fantastic and a lot of decent enough music comes through. I'm suprised they still do the alt/punk hipster thing. I thought that scene was dead. Staff is rude as all hell. Would be a great bar if they replaced all of the employees and got some actually decent bands to play.

Yelp
Great beer selection. Great patio. Great tunes. My go to spot in Kent. You can pick up Taco Tontos through a window in their wall.

Mandy M.

Yelp
You'd think being the best bar in kent they'd have the best bartenders. Nope, they're almost the worst. I've never once seen them smile (specifically the ones at downstairs bar). They are not friendly, don't greet you and all they say is "what do you want" with a frown on their face. I'm not coming back until they hire a better friendlier staff.

Yelp
Stopped into Zephyr last night for the first time in awhile. It's tough to find places in Kent who have enough outdoor space to stay socially-distanced during the pandemic, but Zephyr definitely has plenty of space. On top of that, they're really vigilant in ensuring that people are wearing masks when not at their own table. As a previous (pre-pandemic) regular at Zephyr, I definitely felt comfortable coming back with the safety protocols they're taking.

Yelp
This bar has the RUDEST mf's working there ever. Like hire them for that one restaurant that people are paid to be rude to them. My friend (obviously intoxicated) stepped outside the bar he is not from this state or country and the bouncer came out ripped the drink from his hand and splashed it everywhere including on the people around. The bartender ignored me for at least 45 minutes even though I was sitting AT THE BAR. Terrible much better places in Kent to get drunk.

Yelp
Very fun in the summer! They have a really awesome patio and occasionally have some really good entertainment. I don't really go here during the winter so I don't know much about their winter atmosphere.

Yelp
Zephyr is a great bar. I love the crowd, the staff, the atmosphere. They even have a large patio. If you're of the younger crowd, I highly recommend zephyr as a good place to hang out and grab a drink. While they have a smaller collection of beers, they make up for it in mixed drinks and the ability to get your drink fast even in large crowds on a busy night. Rocking 2 bars over 3 floors, Zephyr is the place to go.

Yelp
The zephyr is my favorite bar to go to during the summer! It's like a giant adult playground. It's three stories tall and the outdoor stairs have large areas at each floor to socialize. The outdoor patio is huge and has tons of tables to sit at. It's also connected to Taco Tontos, so you can order some food if you get hungry! The drinks here are very reasonably priced and they have a wide selection. A lot of times my friends and I will get a couple of pitchers and just hangout on the patio! I just have such good memories of our summer nights there =)

Yelp
If I could give zero stars, I would. So my wife lost her ID, they denied her Global Entry card. This particular card requires a background check and an in person interview with a Customs and Boarder Control Officer. This is card is good enough to bypass global customs, but the manager came over and said he didn't recognize it. We asked that he simply google what a "Global Entry" card looks like and he would see this perfectly matches what is produced in the google image results. He refused to do so and said that my inquiries were "annoying." Perhaps the holograms, and two level identification authentication on the card stifled his simple mind and were not sufficient for their establishment. At least the Transportation Security Administration recognize this as a proper form of identification.

Yelp
Dive bar with a purple pool table. Good beer selections, friendly bartender. I could tell this was a fun place by how many forgotten credit cards were posted on the wall behind the register. Great location downtown. Dark and dingy, but hey it's a bar.

Yelp
Shit. Hole. If you want hepatitis then use their restrooms. I'll give it 2 stars only because their outside patio. I understand that it's a college/dive bar, but come on... There wasn't even a toilet seat on the toilet.

Dominic C.

Yelp
The staff was extremely rude. They threw my friend out the door and down 4 steps, and she was taken to the hospital and found out she broke her ankle. We went back today (months later) and they refused to serve us, even tho THE STAFF was the one who threw her out and costed her thousands of dollars in hospital bills. (She had to wear a boot for her graduation) The staff here is absolutely horrible and rude and i will never be going back here ever again. Please do not go here.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Kent! Outdoor multi level patio, alot of seating outside! Upstairs & downstairs bar with middle level with booths & bathrooms! Spacious upstairs! Personable bartenders & fast drink service! Love!

Yelp
There is a real us and them mentality here. they skip your music if they don't like it, employees are jerks, regulars have free pass to say racist things in the bar or to be obnoxious because they go there a lot and/or tip well.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Kent. Everything about this place is awesome. I hope you decide to drink here.

Zane D.

Yelp
They have a good selection of beer and a really great outdoor patio. I miss when it was a hippie bakery years ago, but it turned into a good bar nonetheless.

Yelp
Zephyr is easily my favorite bar in Downtown Kent. I don't think anything beats sitting on the patio as the sun goes down, drinking a vodka tonic. I'm biased towards giving this place 4 stars just because I'm so used to coming here over the years. However, I want to write this review with an aim towards people who are not familiar with the Downtown Kent scene. First off, the Zephyr does not serve food. There is a "walk-up" window to the restaurant Taco Tontos...but I hesitate to even suggest it. They are very slow and I have waited 30-45 minutes for food (ie. chips and salsa or a burrito) each time I have ordered. If you are looking for a bar with food, Zephyr is not the place for you. Next, I wouldn't exactly call this place the epitome of cleanliness. Remember..it's a dive bar. If you are meeting someone for a first date, this might not be the best place if you want to impress. Lastly, the upstairs...or "barnia" as it is sometimes called. I don't recommend getting mixed drinks from upstairs. Based off of personal experience, I have had many a vodka tonic upstairs that just didn't taste..."right". Of course when you ask the bartenders, they think you are trying to pull one over on them. But I really think it may have to do with the lines running up to the third floor. Always order mixed drinks on the first level! Alas, I will always be a fan of the Zephyr despite its shortcomings. Check it out for yourself!

Yelp
Multiple bars inside and out. This place reminds me of a treehouse. There are staircases inside and out and many places to sit, from booths and picnic tables to bar stools. If it's not too late you can order Taco Tanto's direct from the bar outside, they have their own window. Highly recommended. If you open up a tab they do hold about $25 on your credit card for a few days, which I wasn't too happy with. Otherwise a great place to hang out.

Yelp
I've had an awesome time every time I have been here. This is usually because it's a home visit and I'm hanging out with a friend that loves to have a good time, but don't let that take away from Zephyr. The place is awesome because it has 3 levels, indoor and outdoor. There are two bars, levels 1 and 3: the 1st floor is more like a sit down and relax bar, the 3rd floor is get your drink and socialize, maybe even dance. The drinks can be pricey if you don't know your way around, but there are always decent specials and unless you are spoiled and picky, you can adapt to these offerings after a few rounds. You can get lots of different vibes going around this bar, so it's easy to find a crowd you like and stick with that one. That's why I like this place so much.

Yelp
Love this place. New to the Kent area, so looking for bars to check out and meet new people. This is usually where I end up during the night. The bartenders are really cool and laid back. Tends to not attract much of the frat crowd. If you want to see a bunch of gorillas beating their chests to attract a mate, I would suggest another bar....or the zoo. Has a nice mix of older and younger visitors.

Yelp
Providing outdoor ping pong in a funky mulch-ridden enclave (do leave the dress shoes at home, dear pilgrim), $5 gin and tonic doubles, a preposterous three floors for drunken roaming, and a pool table with premium felt, Zephyr Pub & Spirits is an excellent spot for college town indulgence. The giant, tiered concrete patio is also attached to Taco Tonto's, home to some of Northeast Ohio's most beloved burritos. Indeed, it has been said that some students choose Kent as their matriculation destination only after trying these humungous, savory affairs. Vegetarians are advised to try something with sweet potatoes, and add a little salt of their own as, freshness and soul-warmth aside, these babies can be a little on the under-seasoned side. The ping pong pit is an excellent, unusual point of interest as it is located amid a grove of trees and is charmingly rustic--even with the odd, hard plastic 'net' erected, one imagines, to curtail damage from any sore loser 'hulk outs.' Service can be a touch terse (these barkeeps are overworked by the thirst horde, it more or less goes without saying), but the beer is nearly cheap as water and there are plenty of places to sit and gab in high summer, with umbrellas and trees and a big metal fence for budding voyeurs to peek through--the rabble flow is ceaseless on the weekends and patrons will occasionally spring up to carry on intoxicated convos through the bars (conjuring up images of conjugal visits in Raymond Carver prison). There is also a cigarette machine, offering a fine array of coffin nails for $9 a pack--though bring exact change if you plan on scoring one. In sum, ZP & S is a swell hangout spot for large booze-ready parties, and cheap enough that the mildly cold service can be easily overlooked.

Yelp
The Zephyr is definitely my favorite bar in Kent. The drinks are generally better priced than other places nearby and the bartenders are only rude if you are. The bottom floor has a bar, pool table, jukebox, bathrooms, and a large outdoor area. The second floor has a patio, tables, and bathrooms. The third floor has a bar and patio. Whoever said there are 3 bars must have been too drunk to remember the night correctly.

Yelp
Huge patio. No meatheads. My kind of place. Who won the game? Nobody here will likely no the answer. I first started visiting this place when I my ID said that I was 25 years of age, kind of like I finally am now. There was a fellow there who truly despised my frequenting this place because his ex-lady took a liking to me. So, he had decided to expose the fact that I am not actually the age my ID claims me to be. Unfortunately for him, I was there to celebrate my 21st birthday. Fond memories of time spent at the Zephyr. This place is a great piece of counter-culture.

Yelp
Rude staff, overpriced drinks, and a really cramped first floor. It gets 2 stars only because their patio is pretty awesome.
google avatar

Krystal D.

Yelp
I don't love the Zephyr. Many of my friends do, and I really don't get it. Yes, they do have an awesome patio, I will give them that. And there is a significant lack of undergraduates and DBs. But my praise pretty much ends there. Their drinks are overpriced compared to nearby bars and their bartenders aren't the most amiable. The inside of the bar is uncomfortable- there's little seating, but it's not the type of bar you go to to dance. The music is too loud to hear what your friends are saying, so you can;t actually have a conversation if you're inside. When I find myself out and about in downtown Kent, I'd much rather go elsewhere for a good time.

Yelp
I really liked this place. The bartenders were really nice, and I was able to get a drink quickly. The crowd and atmosphere were good as well. The bathrooms were clean, and it was a really fun bar to go to in kent.

Yelp
I came about a week ago and received some of the worst service I have ever met with. The bartender was completely rude to me and would not listen any time I tried to order something. To top that- their selection of crafts wasn't that good, which is what I prefer. You can definitely find a better craft somewhere else in town. I understand that they cater to an older clientele, but that does not mean you must be rude to someone who is younger. I will not be returning.

Yelp
One of the better spots to hit up while your in kent with 3 stories of music and dance or hidden booths for chatting 3 bars and a 3 story full deck outside! !!!!

Yelp
Fun and huge patio never had a problem here and bartenders always treat me very good! A fav

ruairidh c.

Yelp
3 pinball machines. The Dark Knight - in OK working order. while i think all of the bumpers, jets, pads, and the 3 scoops operated well, the crane is broken. Monopoly - was turned off. when i turned it on the bartender told me that i could drop money in it, but it would just piss me off. so i didn't. Austin Powers - I didn't play this machine because it was in use by a hot chick who was rolling it. It appeared to be in all working order, but I'm not exactly sure. In between balls she said that there were no problems with it outside of it being Austin Powers.

Yelp
joel is the best bartender ever. a++++++ grade. ask him to tell you a joke.

Yelp
The Zephyr is a great bar with 3 levels of pain! I would suggest avoiding the second floor bathrooms but definitely do recommend this bar to anyone going to Kent.

Andrea M.

Yelp
I recently moved to Kent and wanted to find relaxed local bar to hang my hat on occasion. Much to my surprise there were three pinball machines. I like the eclectic crowd and selection of spirits. Its is nice to get away from the college bar scene and feel like a grown up. I am able to enjoy a Cavs game, play pinball and listen to great tunes all in one night. I won't ever complain.

Kaitlin K.

Yelp
My favorite spot in Kent! Great prices, strong drinks, cool atmosphere, and awesome patio! Highly recommended!

Patrick B.

Yelp
Awesome bar with great atmosphere and amazing three story outdoor patio.

Jason K.

Yelp
The "Indie" bar in Kent to go to. Little to no frat boys and good music. They always have good $5 or $6 pitchers and other specials. The best part? The patio is where a building was torn down long ago and now it is a huge open place with room for probably 100. They even added a 3 floor covered patio with heaters for the winters which helps with Ohio's no smoking ban. If you hate the frat party this is your place to go!

Tiffany B.

Yelp
we've always had good times at the zephyr. can't complain. it's a good summertime hangout and you won't have to worry about obnoxious frat guys hanging here.
