As the starting point of the Matterhorn-Gornergrad Railway, this popular tourist destination in Switzerland is also a fascinating town with beautiful shops and the surrounding mountains. At around 4pm, there is a sheep parade and Matterhorn music is played at appropriate times. The park near the Pfarrkirche St. Mauritius Church and the view of the Matterhorn from the Japanese Bridge are also beautiful. Prices are high everywhere in Switzerland, so I often used the Coop in front of the station.

📍 Zermatt 🇨🇭 Car-Free Alpine Town & Hiking Paradise beneath the Matterhorn ⸻ 🚗 Arrival & Car Drop-Off We parked at Matterhorn Terminal Täsch, then took the 12-minute shuttle train into Zermatt. The system is efficient, and entering the peaceful, car-free alpine town instantly sets the mood for a nature-filled retreat. ⸻ 🌄 3-Night Stay in a Hiking Paradise We stayed in Zermatt for 3 nights, and honestly, I wish we had more time here. We skipped Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, choosing instead to explore the hiking trails that immerse you in nature at your own pace—no crowds, no rush, just pure alpine beauty. ⛰️ Hikes We Did: • 🥾 5-Seenweg (5 Lakes Trail) – This beautiful half-day hike connects five alpine lakes with Matterhorn reflections, serene scenery, and well-maintained paths. A definite highlight. • 🌿 Furi Trail – A quieter route with gorgeous views, lush green meadows, and perfect picnic spots. We did not visit Hörnli Hut or take the Gornergrat route. Our goal was to truly hike and enjoy the trails—not rush through viewpoints. ⸻ 🧺 Picnic Is a Must! Before hitting the trail, we grabbed sandwiches and fresh fruit in town. Having a picnic with Matterhorn views is a memory we’ll always treasure. The air is crisp, the views unbeatable, and there are plenty of scenic spots along the trail to sit and relax. ⸻ 🌥️ Weather & Timing Tips • ✅ Hike early: Cloud cover starts to roll in after 3PM, so we made sure to finish by then to catch clear Matterhorn views. • 🌄 Sunrise is magical: To experience a truly breathtaking sunrise, we recommend staying somewhere with a Matterhorn-facing view. ⸻ 🐏 Unique Sights Don’t miss spotting the Valais Blacknose Sheep and Zermatt’s black-and-white goats. Finding them grazing freely was one of the most delightful experiences—a must-do! 🐐 Tip: Ask the local tourism office where to find them or when the goats walk through town. ⸻ 📌 Final Reflections • 🛏️ We stayed for 3 nights, and I’d gladly stay longer next time. • 🧭 Zermatt is perfect for hikers, not just sightseers. • 🥾 Trails are well-marked and accessible by cable car or on foot. • 🍃 The car-free town feels like a hidden retreat—clean, peaceful, and stunning.

Zermatt HB isn’t very big, but it’s perfectly adequate and located right in the center of the village, making it easy to reach. In front of the station, you can catch the train to Gornergrat — super convenient! Zermatt is a car-free village, but don’t worry, the public transport here is free and efficient. If you’re lucky and the weather is clear, you can even see the famous Matterhorn. I’ll definitely come back again in a different season! 🏔️🇨🇭

Great town without cars only electricity cars. Easy to take a train in the station.

What's a beautiful village. It is a gasoline free place. Only electronic vehicles can drive into here. Most people visit here via the train.

Zermatt is an absolutely stunning destination, surrounded by breathtaking alpine scenery. The journey to Zermatt by train was smooth and convenient, with tickets costing around 18 francs. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to experience Switzerland’s natural beauty at its finest.
