Zerohotel was a pleasant find. This was a last minute trip for us to celebrate the New Year. I had heard the fireworks in Valparaiso were quite large and well-known as being one of the best. We traveled to Santiago and took 2 days to stay in Valpo. This is a boutique hotel with about 9 rooms. We booked a single, queen bed room and landed on the first floor by the street. The room was simple, but quite lovely with high ceilings. The hotel has 3 terraces and is situated high on a hill overlooking the ocean and port bay. The staff were very accommodating, pleasant, helpful, and just enjoyable. Kudos to the whole team.
Gabi was especially helpful and gave me water upon our arrival where my boyfriend somehow commandeered me to walk from el estacion de buses to the hotel. DO NOT DO THIS! (There are many uphill streets and stairs and the roads are cobblestone and semi-steep.) She recommended a great restaurant to have dinner on NYE - Olichen - and secured a reservation at the last minute for us. I can’t say enough how delicious and enjoyable that dinner was.
The hotel is PERFECT for watching the fireworks without being in the fray and craziness. Unfortunately, it was cloudy and there wasn’t much wind so the display was not as grand as in previous years. Nevertheless, we had a fabulous time with the other guests, staff, and our complimentary bottle of champagne.
My one negative was that we were not prepared for the level of festivities that would ensue. Valparisianos (?) and their guests/visitors LOVE to stay up all night and ring in the new year - until about 7am to be precise. I didn’t get much sleep. So be forewarned!!
