On the Grid : Zhovten Cinema

"The small but irresistibly charming Zhovten cinema has a unique old spirit, cheap tickets, art-house movies, and, of course, velvet seats. Also, “Dolce vita” hall only accommodates three seat rows and feels like your own personal cinema. Zhovten balances blockbusters with festival screenings and low-budget movies in the original language. Get a bottle of wine in the shop next doors and immerse into yet another scandinavian drama. And, to recover from it, drop in the recently opened Gastro cafe right in the cinema." - MacPaw

Kyiv's oldest working cinema (1911) has velvet seats retaining their original horsehair stuffing. The projection booth still has the 1950s Soviet-era carbon arc lamps as backups. Intermission features live piano - the same Chopin études played since the 1920s.

Really nice and rather average or even small sized historical cinema, located in Podil area - lets call it old town of Kyiv. It was overhauled after fire which took place few years ago and now has both cozy and modern atmosphere in one. I've never been to blockbuster movie here, always documentary festivals, some special premieres, short films etc, therefore it has that special, magical association for me. Cool place with soul.

Zhovten cinema is an old Soviet era cinema famous for it's long history and is very popular now due to renovated halls. The renovation bring a contemporary hint into mostly Soviet planning without disrupting the whole atmosphere, as to me it's a perfect way to manage old buildings as this one. The ticket counter accepts cards and cash as well as the popcorn point. The cinema gas a cafe as well.

Rude and unpleasant staff, they let even dogs inside the screen rooms. People keep arriving even 20 min after the start of the movie. First and last time here.

How can it happen that cupholders in the armrests are too small to accomodate a paper cup with soda that is being sold in the lobby? This is just ridiculous. Another annoying feature is personnel - they have no idea what service is (except the guy in the bar serving popcorn and drinks). Otherwise the cinema is very nice, clean and comfortable. Seats are good enough to seat couple hours. And the place has no parking, so you have to park elsewhere.

A mix of blockbuster and arthouse, frequent screenings in original languages. The rebuilt halls are a huge improvement over the old Zhovten. Ticket prices ridiculously low--typically $4 a ticket--and located in Kyiv's best neighborhood--mine!

Recently renovated Indy-ish cinema, featuring both mainstream and Indy titles. Favourite among locals. Some screenings are in English.

The cinema is good, they show a lot of films every day, the cheesy popcorn is great, the lobby has excellent renovations, friendly staff. There is one BUT - the halls have very narrow old uncomfortable seats.
