The line for check-in was long because each passenger is required to weigh their carry-ons and check-ins. No screens on the plane. Must have a tablet or phone loaded with games or movies. Internet is barely usable on the flight. You may or may not be able to send messages. Eat something before the flight. Bring a bottle of water and a snack. You'll survive the 10 hours. Zipair is great if you are an efficient traveler. I go with almost nothing. Literally just carry-on a laptop, tablet, charger and tooth brush. When I come back, I buy multiple luggage check-ins for all the omiyages. I also love that buying roundtrip won't give you a better deal. Meaning, if I'm not sure how long I want to stay in Japan, I can just buy a one-way ticket without losing out. Last note, if you're just going to go with check-ins and coming back with check-in luggages, you might be just better off with the bigger companies (united, ana, american, etc).

In-Flight Experience & Comfort: Bare Bones As expected from a budget airline, the base fare covers little more than the seat. Food & Drinks: Complimentary food and drinks are not provided. Any sustenance, including water, must be purchased beforehand or ordered through the in-flight app. The food that was pre-ordered was average in quality. We recommend bringing your own snacks and beverages to save money and ensure a better selection. Seating: The seating arrangement felt cramped. For a long, 9-hour journey back to San Francisco, the seats seemed smaller than typical international economy seats, and sleeping was very difficult, resulting in a restless trip. The Value Proposition: You Get What You Pay For The core takeaway from the flight is that everything was adequate, provided you understood what you were paying for. Having entered the experience without high expectations for the price paid, the flight successfully transported us from point A to point B. It's essential for potential passengers to realize they are paying for a minimalist service. If a cheap ticket is your priority and you are willing to overlook the cumbersome check-in process, minimal English from some ground staff, delayed departure, extra fees for every amenity, and reduced seat comfort, then ZIPAIR offers good value. However, for a more comfortable or premium service, be prepared to pay significantly more with a full-service carrier.

Horrible Experience I had one of the worst experiences flying with this airline. Here’s why: • They only allow 7 kg total for carry-on luggage on a 10-hour flight this includes your personal item. And yes, they will strictly enforce it at check-in. • Mobile check-in was unavailable, forcing everyone to go to the counter, causing unnecessary delays. • The flight was delayed, and they offered a $10 meal voucher barely enough for anything at the airport. • I paid for a seat, but there was a completely empty row next to me. I politely asked if I could move there so a mother and her daughter could sit together. They refused unless I paid again for the same type of seat in the next row. • No complimentary snack’s or water on a 10 hour flight. You have to pay for it and they don’t take cash, only cards. If you don’t have one, you’re out of luck. • They even charge you for a recyclable cup. • No TV screens onboard, so make sure you bring an iPad or something to stay entertained. • On the return flight, I tried to prepay $49 for 8 extra kilos, but the option wasn’t available anymore. At the counter, I was told my 10kg bag would now cost me $100 to check in. Overall, this was one of the worst airline experiences I’ve had. Poor service, excessive fees, and complete lack of flexibility or empathy

Terrible experience. Our luggage’s were 7lbs over weight. They won’t let you pay for extra weight, instead you have to check bag in and pay $94. This should be criminal. Will never fly ZipAir again.

New direct flights from San Jose to Narita, Tokyo. It is the low cost version of Japan Airlines where it is operating direct flights from San Francisco to Narita, Tokyo. The new service from Japan Airlines to catch flyers from the South Bay region where SFO might not be the best option for them. From the line of waiting flyers, it will be a very popular and busy flight for South Bay flyers.

The Zipair website even let me book a flight. It gets partway through the booking process, then either stops loading or keeps redirecting to the same page. I just wasted an hour trying to book through several different browsers.

This is a garbage airline and treats its customers like things not human being and This company seems to let us know that this is an airline that you should never fly on from next time. There is no in-flight service at all. Basically, even though it is an international flight, they should at least give you water, but they tell you to buy it. even cheap and worst airlines in USA, they serve water for the customers. they don't give any information during fly. Took Zipair’s San Jose-Tokyo flight over the summer, and experienced its lie flat seat at a very reasonable price for a last-minute booking. 👍 For people who are considering Zipair flights, please set the right expectation: we get what we pay for! ✅ Do expect zero in-flight service, no free drinking water served, all beverages and meals have to be purchased via Zipair’s extremely slow and poorly designed website during the duration of the flight, a small cup of hot tea costed $3, my pre-paid salmon meal looked terrible and tasted bad, I had to buy a blanket to keep me warm, …… But I’m not complaining about its deficient service because I got what I paid for! Be happy with Zipair’s unbeatable airfares😀 Don’t sweat the small stuff when the deals are this good👌

It's a bare bones discount airline that gets you to Tokyo. The seats are adequate for a six hour flight; for the 11 hour westbound trip, that much time in those seats can get a little bit brutal. The meals are not good at all so pack your own food. They weigh your carryons at check-in, but it's easy enough to load your bag up with food afterwards. On board purchases of snacks and drinks are reasonably price. Free Internet for everybody but it doesn't really work when you're over the Pacific.

Pretty much what I expected. This is a low cost airline direct to Tokyo. If you're not prepared they will nickel and dime you, but thankfully I knew that in advance. Nothing is included, but their prices are more than reasonable. Straight forward flight and experience. Best way to travel to Japan on a budget.

The a la carte, value airline. The wife and I flew Zipair to Tokyo (Narita International) and saved a *lot* of money. Round-trip airfare for direct flights from San Jose were half the cost of another carrier! Zipair lets you choose whether to pay for things like checking bags, pre-ordering food, and even choosing your own seats. We opted to not pay the fee to choose our seats, but fortunately we got assigned two adjacent seats, perhaps because both tickets were on the same itinerary. The flights there and back were about half full, so we had a row of 3 seats to ourselves. A few notes about our experience: * Online check-in was not available. We had to check in at the airport counter. * Make sure your carry-on weighs less than 15 pounds, otherwise you'll have to check it in at a price starting at $50! * Fill up your water bottles before boarding, because there's a charge for even water on this airline. * Each seat has a multi-configuration power outlet (types A, B, and G) and a USB charging port. * Free WiFi! But it worked only about half the time. It was fast enough for email and articles, but not for streaming music. * Announcements were made first in Japanese and then English. You'll probably get on the flight attendants' good side if you speak some Japanese, but it's not required. Zipair uses a fleet of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. This aircraft has modern features such as electronically dimmable windows, which allows the crew to control the amount of light entering the cabin from all windows simultaneously. Our flight to Tokyo was over 11 hours, while the flight back was just 9 hours. Jet streams FTW!

Flew on ZipAir the other day and it was a decent experience. Booked direct for a lie-flat seat and it was priced 5x an Economy seat. ZipAir is a low-cost division of Japan Airlines. Available add-ons include seat assignments, checked luggage, additional cabin baggage weight, meals, and/or amenity kits. There is no screen on board although Wifi is complimentary. Check-in was easy although the agent require guidance and proof that my luggage has already paid for... Cabin crew on board all wore uniforms and a mask. Some even wore gloves. Boarding began with the back of the plane before general boarding. Plane left the gate on time. After a manual safety demonstration in Japanese, the English version followed. During the flight, prepaid amenity kits were handed out first along with prepaid meals. As meals tend to be tiny, it's best to pre-order multiple meals a few days prior to flying to ensure a full stomach. Ordering is done via the intranet with payment being card only. Started off with the Korean beef which was okay. The beef was well done and had a side of white rice along with vegetables. Opted for the mushroom Orzo a few hours later which was better. It was more like a Western dish with a tomato based sauce and mushrooms over pasta. After the meal service, the cabin lights were dimmed for rest (during a daytime flight) which was odd. The Dreamliner features centrally controlled dimmable shades although one could manually override them. The lie-flat seat was electronically controlled with a recline, upright and fully flat option. Despite being a 10 year old aircraft, the cabin, including the lavatories was in great condition. The lavatories featured disposable poly gloves, paper towels, and facial tissues. In addition, there was plenty of foamy soap and spray hand sanitizer. The toilet even had a motion sensor for flushing.

If I could give zero, I would. Absolutely HORRENDOUS customer service. I needed to get back to Vancouver from Tokyo a day earlier, so I went to the Terminal 1 kiosk and the lady stared at me with a smug look on her face and said no. No options, no asking for details. Nothing. I had high expectations of Japan, and it was all an illusion. The people are cold, indifferent and they have this fake politeness about them that is not hidding their hidden disdain. I'm not just some random traveller, have travelled to three continents. ZipAir is a mirror of what you are going to expect as service throughout Tokyo. Sayonara - NEVER COMING BACK - BUT THAT'S WHAT THEY ALL WANT ANYWAY. WILL GLADLY SPEND MY VACATION DOLLARS ON COMPANIES AND COUNTRIES THAT ARE GRACIOUS.

Zipair Hands down the worst airline I've ever flown with. This is the greyhound of the skies. 0 humanities. Very limited English speaking air crew. Everything costs extra and I mean everything. WIFI is horrible and with no onboard entertainment you're going to be bored out of your gourd unless you can fall asleep. You can't choose your seat and even if the flight is half empty you won't be able to move couple of seats over without them wanting to charge you. This airline is everything Japan is not. Beautiful country with a money grubbing airline. Do your due diligence and you will find better deals(united airlines). Even southwest trumps them in every category. One word "Horrible".

Roundtrip flights to Tokyo for less than $600. It's a great value and there are even a few extras on top of the flight experience that are different from a normal flight that are super great. Food on demand, Free Wifi, and peace, quiet and dark to sleep are areas where ZipAir excels. Baggage: You are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item, which need to weight less than 7kg (15 lbs) combined. They weigh your items at check-in, and they are pretty strict, so pack carefully. My partner brought his CPAP machine, which was not counted towards the weight limit or bag limit. You can also pay extra for more weight, or to check a bag. We didn't mind the weight limit. It wasn't that restrictive for us. But you do have to pack carefully. Our empty carry-on bag weighed 8 lbs alone. Food: There is a large selection of meals that you can order online in advance, up to 48 hours before your flight. You can see the meals available at https://www.zipair.net/en/service/meal. You can opt to have the meal delivered right after take-off, or pay a few dollars more to have the meal delivered before landing. The meals are all reasonably priced, about $10-$15. I saw a lot of reviews that the food is not good. This was not my experience. I felt the meals were above average for airline meals. I especially appreciated that I got to choose between many options, and that I had more information about what I was going to be served than the usual broad categories i.e. "chicken or pasta?" or "eggs or waffles?" I ordered the Cheese Ravioli w/ Spinach Cream Sauce and the Gyudon. Both were tasty and I definitely would order them again. The flight attendant brings the meal you ordered to your seat, so you aren't allowed to change seats. If you forget to order in advance, there is usually at least 1-2 entree meals available to order inflight. You just won't have as much selection as if you order online. There are also options available inflight that aren't available online in advance. For example, on the flight from Tokyo to SJC, there was a Mini Appetizer Set. Lastly, they have a wide selection of instant noodles that were quite good. I particularly liked the Nissin Foods Donbei Kitsune Deep-Fried Tofu Udon Cup. There's also a wide selection of beverages, including milk tea. However, they do charge for water. On the flight back, I loaded up on Japanese beverages at the vending machine at the airport before boarding. A great way to use up my remaining yen, and much cheaper than purchasing on the flight. Ordering process is easy. There is a QR code on the back of every seat. Place your order and pay online (using the free in-flight wifi). The flight attendant will bring your food to your seat. It's all super fast (sub 5 minutes). I was really impressed with the service. Electronics: There's free wifi and also plugs at every seat. The wifi is slow but definitely useable. I'm really impressed that they offer free wifi on a budget flight. Ambiance: One of the best parts of this flight is that it was quiet and easy to sleep! Most international flights have three meals (one meal right after take-off, one snack in the middle of the flight, and one meal right before landing) where everyone is woken up by the lights and the hustle and bustle. And I feel like I have to eat then, even if I'm not hungry, because that's when food is available. On ZipAir, you can sleep in peace the entire flight. And you can order food whenever you are hungry. It's great. Check-In: This was probably the worst part of the experience. Check-In lines are super long. Arrive at the airport 3 hours in advance. Seat Selection: We paid extra to choose our seats. It wasn't very much ($18 / seat in one direction and $13 / seat in the other direction). It was definitely worth it. The seats in the very last row are the cheapest to reserve. They don't recline very much. But they are the only seats that you can get two people together without another stranger. Overall, would absolutely recommend ZipAir and would fly them again.

DO NOT FLY ZIPAIR! I flew to Japan from SJC and checked a ski bag with them. I checked it in as early as they would let me. Not only my bag but all ski bags were not loaded onto the flight. After being delayed an hour for "loading cargo" They couldn't tell me why they were left or how they would get it to me. I've tried to call them but SURPRISE they don't operate a phone line. Because they know if they did people would call to complain. Currently they have given me a shipping tracking number that doesn't work and told me it will arrive in 3 days, five days after they lost it. They have also refunded me & $73, why that amount? I don't know. Did they offer to cover the incurred expenses? Obviously not. Zipair is a joke of an airline that offers zero customer service.

Whatever you do; don't fly on Zipair! I booked 2 flights to Japan. I was charged separately which I didn't notice until I couldn't find the second reservation. We leave in 7 days and I was told there never was second reservation. Now I'm paying $504 dollars more than the original amount and my son has to fly out a day later because there are NO seats available. Although I was able to speak to a human being; they were no help. It's worth paying more money to another airline versus dealing with Zipair. Avoid this airline at all costs. I should've listened to all of the bad reviews!!

I just flew round trip, mid August 2024, from San Jose to Narita. The 5 members of our group had done extensive investigation regarding previous experiences using this particular service. So that being said, we paid a little extra to "carry on" a few more pounds. We made sure or luggage and carry on luggage fit the strict requirements in terms of weight and size. We paid for VIP check in (or something similar). Check in at San Francisco. Fast no problem. The actual Boarding of the plane was a little chaotic. It was not clear who should line up when. Once on, The flight attendants had all seated and compliant and we treated to a very smooth flight with arrival 1 hour early in Narita. Tips: bring your own water and snacks. Bathrooms were kept clean during the flight. Check in Narita (back to San Jose). No problems. We pre weighed all of our bags prior to arrival at the airport to make sure that we met zip air specification. I should note that the actual boarding of the plane was chaotic. No actual announcement was made. People just started lining up.

Do not book zip airline! They are the worst! I missed my flight window by 10 minutes and they wouldn't let me in. 2:45pm flight and I tried to check in at 1:55pm. I had to rebook a flight for $1,500 back to the United States because of them! It's tough enough traveling in a foreign city, however, they made it much worse for me! Spend extra money on your flights to avoid them at all cost!

First experience in ZIPAIR from San Jose to Narita. Not enough staff, poor control capability, slow process, no kiosks, no mobile check-in. Consequently, super disorder. Very disappointed

Wow what a great gem to find when flying to and from Japan! The flight is economical with no frills (no entertainment screen built into the head rests) however the Service is top notch with everything from checking in, in flight service and exiting the plane. A word of advise: check their website regularly as their pricing is extremely volatile and can fluctuate like crazy. Great Service, Great price why fly to Japan with anyone else?

Zipair was really poor with customer service. We reserved emergency row seats, without any notice that these seats had unmovable arm rest and smaller than usual widths. My husband and I are bigger people and were miserable in them. They charged us to move to a less expensive seat and the flight was only 1/3 full. On our return flight, a woman and her young child had one of these seats and she complained that she couldn't even lift the armrest to hold her child. They refused to let her move and were nasty about it. I'd never fly with them again.

Zipair is a relatively new reduced cost airline (I won't say low cost as there is no such thing). It's owned by Japan Airlines, ( JAL ). If you can get past the very very difficult website process in which you will likely fail and have to begin all over and over (5X for me), you will eventually be issued tickets to a crowded but clean new airplane with not much legroom (like most economy seats). For a family of 4 round trip SFO to Tokyo we saved about $1800, but still cost over $4000. Good luck with that awful website!

Horrific experience, booked a trip to Japan but my mother broke her spine resulted in emergency surgery. I called and wrote to the company submitting all medical documents explaining that I am the main caregiver and unable to go. I asked if they can make an exception to either change the dates, get a credit or a refund. They said no exceptions are made under any circumstances. Would never book with them again.

Paid over $694 for tickets, had a death in the family and had to cancel. They offered $64 back, no flight credit. Couldn't accept the offer on principle alone. F**k zipair

Zipair fucking sucks. Its a nightmare trying to get a refund, IF you can find some kind of customer support. 1 month in and cc has yet to be refunded, they state that it takes 1-2 months for a refund?! You going to pay interest on my cc Zipair?

This review is regarding their dishonest cancellation policy. Their website says that cancellations made within 24 hours of the reservation are given a full refund. If you go to the "Manage booking" link on their website, there is a cancellation button, but it does NOT give a full refund. Instead, it only gives a $32 tax refund! So how do you get the full refund? Their customer service representative told me that you need to cancel over the phone, email, or Live Chat to get the full refund. It's horrifying they consider it acceptable to have a button on their website that doesn't give a full refund, and we have to use other communication methods to request to full refund... However, there is actually no phone number listed on their website. I don't see a Live Chat option either; I've checked on my laptop, my iPad, and my mobile phone. I also emailed contact.en@zipair.net but nobody responded. Eventually, I did get ahold of them. If you search "zipair inquiries" on Google and then click the first link and then select "Changes and cancellations" from the dropdown, you can fill out a form to request a cancellation. I don't know how anyone is supposed to find this... They did reach out to me after I filled out the form. To provide some additional context, I clicked the cancellation button on their website 26 hours after the reservation. However, their customer service representative explained even if the cancellation button was clicked before 24 hours had passed, I would still only get a $32 tax refund. In order to get the full refund, you have to fill out the Inquiry form or phone, email, or Live Chat with them. You won't get the full refund using the cancellation button on their website.

I've flown using ZipAir several times, but after this latest experience, I will never fly with them again. I was flying from Bangkok to Tokyo. I was harassed by a Japanese Flight Attendant named Amy the entire flight. First I told her my power charger was broken. She kept saying it was my cord, even though I had multiple cords, and all my cords worked with another plug. Like I don't know how to charge a phone. I had to get other attendants to confirm it was broken before she accepted what I was saying. Then she had a complaint every 5 minutes. First my carry on bag wasn't perfectly flush under the seat in front. Then my sandwich wasn't perfectly flush on my tray. Then she complained I was reclined when others were reclined. I started to notice a pattern, I was being singled out for being white, because she wasn't doing this to the Japanese passengers. Then she started to move me around, into different seats. During this time, she kept tripping about my seatbelt, while ignoring the Japanese lady next to me, who had an infant and was standing up. She said she didn't need to wear a seat belt, but I did. It was absurd, because she was more concerned about a grown man having a seat belt than a newborn baby. Then she got angry I was put into the emergency isle, she didn't think I deserved the extra space so she ended up moving me back to the original seat. By the time she served the disgusting TV dinner, I told her to trash the food, because I would not trust any food she had handled. She was the most rude flight attendant I've ever encountered, so rude I will never fly with ZipAir again. Maybe she was just having a really bad day, and wanted to take it out on the Gaijin, but it seemed more like she is just racist and was on some sort of power trip. Don't fly ZipAir, it's not worth saving a few bucks to be harassed the entire flight.

UNTRUSTWORTHY. 24 hour cancellation period. We cancelled at less than 16 hours later. No response until AFTER the 24 hour period had lapsed. They kept our $3,500 and returned the $128 in taxes. Absolute predatory company. No way to contact them, as is their wish. Find a number on their website and call it. If they answer, book a flight. They won't. They are opportunistic SCAMMERS dressed in Japanese trustworthiness.

do not fly zipair. they delayed my return flight for 2 hours for aircraft maintenance which is in their control. i missed my connection in lax and had to pay for hotel and new flights. i cant get ahold of anybody. no phone number, just a terrible ai bot. the price is not worth the risk of ruining your vacation. just trust me!

Just a bit too budget-oriented. Check-in at SJC was OK. Returning at Tokyo was a mess. You can lose a good hour at check-in while staff walks around carrying tablet computers trying to sort out computer system malfunctions. One employee was coughing and struggling to breathe so much that she collapsed a couple of times. I found the lie-flat seats too small for comfortably lying-flat but they were nice when angled like a recliner. There's no in-seat entertainment system. The in-flight WiFi has a few movies that you won't want to watch. WiFi to the outside world is very slow but you can eventually open news articles. The in-flight WiFi system is also the only way you can get water on this long flight, and you need to buy it. No, they won't fill a cup. There's no free checked in luggage but you can pay for a higher weight allowance. Make sure to pay for luggage days in advance or you'll hit one of the check-in malfunctions.

my best flights I have ever had. prefer over business class in British Air. fast check in. clear on prices and all charges upfront. Free wifi and if you want ANY drink or food if not preordered you order from your phone and they bring right away. otherwise not up and down the isle keeping you awake on the long flight. Zip lie flat was above the others airlines which are considered high quality. wish they flew more places!!!!
