How to Plan a Trip to Belgrade, Serbia

"A kafana built in 1823 and known as the oldest in the city, serving as both beloved tourist attraction and local hangout. The rustic interior—complete with red checkered tablecloths—and open gardens piled high with platters of meat, salad, and fresh cheese evoke a time-traveling, homey experience, often accompanied by a roving band playing nostalgic Serbian tunes on request." - Sophie Dodd Sophie Dodd Sophie Dodd is a travel, wine and lifestyle writer.  Travel + Leisure Editorial Guidelines

A cosy old-style restaurant serving classic Serbian dishes. The grilled ćevapi are the highlight — juicy, smoky and perfect with flatbread and onions. It’s a great place if you want something simple, tasty and very local.

If you are looking for traditional Serbian food, this is the place for you. The food is very good, and the selection is large. The interior is that of a pub. There is seating inside, too. I recommend trying the Sarma; I really liked it. The prices are very attractive; you can eat inexpensively. Delicious draft beer. Good, pleasant service. The downside is that the guest toilet is very far away.❤️❤️❤️

We just had a WONDERFUL meal here! The waiter was so kind! He recommended a lovely platter of meats and cheeses for our lunch, and we left full and happy! A wonderful experience from beginning to end!!

We were nearly put off by the reviews, but found ourselves nearby one evening and decided to give it a go anyway, as we wanted to eat in the "oldest kafana in Belgrade". We were actually pleasantly surprised. Despite the reviews, we actually had a very friendly and attentive server, and the food came out in a very reasonable time, and was very nice. Overall we were really happy. The only down side was the garden was closed for some reason so we had to get a table by the side of the street out front. But this was fine, if not as tranquil as the garden.

Few years ago they had excellent baklava sweet and I made a mistake to order it again. No walnuts inside, just sprinkled on the top, no layers only thick dough, full of sugar and not a trace of the real baklava sweet. And it cost me 590.00 each, 5 € per piece. Not worth, not even close. It's a shame that even foreigners won't have an opportunity to taste how excellent baklava sweet should taste. Just skip.

Excellent service, although they don’t know how to pour beer in the Balkans. Too much head, so glass not full! Food was very tasty, good portions & reasonably priced …. beef goulash & sarmer. Great location & story!

A very unfriendly waiter told us (at 6:00 PM, even though the kitchen is officially open until 9:00 PM) that the kitchen was closed. However, other guests were still being served, and the day before, we received food (of average quality) an hour later. In the end, we only drank a completely overpriced glass of wine. Apparently, the cooking and serving here are done at the whim of a specific waiter. The ambiance in the Kralja Petra and the restaurant are very nice, but the service is a disaster. One can only hope for a change in staff at this traditional restaurant. The 2 stars are only for the location; the service deserves 0 stars.
