"Archaeological Site with Beautiful Views On a hilltop adjacent to Monte Alban, just outside the city of Oaxaca , there is an archaeological site that has just recently been excavated. Atzompa was a satellite city of the great Zapotec capital of Monte Alban. The site provides breathtaking views of the valley and is fascinating in its own right. Archaeologists have uncovered three ball courts, two sumptuous residences, several temples and a large kiln here. Atzompa archaeological site dates from around 650 to 850 A.D. Since excavations are not yet complete, very few tourists make their way up here, so you can quietly enjoy the beauty of the spot."

Thought to be where Zapotec nobility lived. Not Mont Alban but worth a visit as it is empty of other people and the views are stunning. Difficult to get to and can be very difficult to leave -- be sure you have a plan for a taxi to pick you up.

It’s a free site to visit and has some stunning architecture and views. It was a suburb of Monte Albán. There is a steep incline to get to the upper level but worth it.

A real unexpected find. This recently reopened counterpart to Monte Alban is smaller but also WAY less crowded at under 50 visitors per day on average. We took a taxi from downtown Oaxaca and back for 500 pesos, the site itself is admission free. Ride up takes about 30 minutes. The site has great views, good signage and is very relaxed without the vendors and tour groups. If you have some time this is a really nice morning spent off the beaten track.

Such a cool & wonderful historically cultural experience . . . and it is FREE & beautiful! Really Interesting how Atzompa tied into Monte Albán, visible & just a few hills away! I had the place to myself! Must 👀!

Very beautiful views and interesting history, with several informative panels in English and Spanish around the zone. I was the only person there the entire time, worth a visit. Took a mototaxi up from Atzompa and walked down (40 mins).

Amazing archeological site of the Zapotec civilization with breathtaking views. We were literally the only ones visiting and we had all the place to ourselves. No fee for entrance!

Getting here is the main obstacle for some. Take a taxi to Santa Maria Atzompa and then from the village take a moto taxi to the site. Once you register with the guard, you have the place to yourself. The site was part of Greater Monte Alban and was built for several wealthy families and to keep a watch on the Etla Valley for intruders. Well signed in Spanish and English. When you are done start walking back down the hill and within 15 minutes we came across several taxis and mototaxis to take us back. Easy to do and well worth the experience.

Amazing place, not the main archeological attraction therefore no crowds and for free. Very good views from the surroundings
