14 Best Wine Bars in Barcelona | Condé Nast Traveler

"“A meal without wine is called breakfast,” declares a sign in Zona d'Ombra, underscoring just how serious the place is about viticulture. Walls are used to display bottles, wine lists are wrapped around old bottles (and not just any old bottles—we’re talking magnums and bigger), and there are maps of wine regions and photographs of vineyards throughout. Although there's a good array of wines by the glass—12 reds, eight whites, two rosés, and three cavas—Zona d’Ombra's real draw is the chance to pluck a bottle straight from the shelves." - Gemma Askham

Google
I read one of the reviews that questioned why this place has only four stars. I ask the same so I am definitely happy to give them five stars. What a great find in the Gothic area! I am in the Wine business in the US, and I have to tell you they’re by the glass selections are amazing, featuring interesting whites that sadly don’t get much attention in the US. Very knowledgeable staff, great respite from the heat, and a very chill place to enjoy some of Spain’s best wine selections by the glass for exceptionally reasonable prices. Go explore and enjoy!

Google
Everything was perfect. They had a great range of wines, but still included other drinks. The food was authentically Spanish, and delicious! The waiters were lovely, people were friendly, and the inside and vibes were great! Absolutely no complaints - would 100% recommend!

Google
To be honest, I don't understand why this place has only 4 stars. Service is very nice, and the staff know wine. The choice of wine is quite good. Atmosphere is great, and very nice location

Google
A great place to stop for a drink. Great wine selection. Great atmosphere.

Whatever I write will be less. We had the most outstanding evening here. Karen is excellent. She gave us wine flights. I had two (both red) and my daughter one (white). Most of the wines were great. The cheese platter she served was excellent. The overall evening was great and it was basically Karen’s knowledge which made it that.

Nice little wine bar in a quiet square. Outside seating is reserved for eating but when it is quiet they will let you sit there just for drinks if you ask nicely.

Google
There is a window seat outside is my happy place. A plate of cheese. A glass (or three) of wine. Its a beautiful experience. I was lucky enough to bring my wife with me for a visit, and she fell in love too. Great prices. great service. I wish they stayed open later.

Google
It’s kind of hidden place in a Gothic area. We had a few plates rather than many. So probably my review is not what you are looking for. But I can tell the atmosphere around this area which I loved so much. The price was reasonable. Can’t say that is cheap but compared to others, reasonable. A bit confused about the table system as more than two restaurants share a plaza area and tables look same. But belong to different shops. Ask your waiter before shifting a table.

Yelp
We were so lucky to stumble upon this place after arriving at another wine bar only to find out that it was permanently closed. The wine and tapas bar is outstanding. I wanted a local red wine with a robust profile and was able to purchase it from their site. They have an outstanding selection of local wines. They also recommend a wonderful cheese platter of local cheeses that paired perfectly with our wine. Wonderful owners and a must stop. We will absolutely go back a few more times during our stay in Barcelona.

Yelp
So as a visitor you might be a little intimidated but give it up! This is a little gem! We enjoyed 2 roses that were superb and picked by the owner. You should come!! He is busy but takes care of you. He learns your tastes and will take care of you. There is a $5 corking fee(boo) but he finds the best wines to enjoy so worth the extra! So those of you visiting stop in. We also saw that reservations for Saturday so we aren't the only ones that know this is a great stop!

Yelp
The friendliest people you will meet in the gothic quarters! Don't be afraid to sit inside this very traditional restaurant-- they will give you the best wine recommendations and the tapas are tasty. If you are a tourist looking for a place off the beaten path- this is it!

Yelp
Came here with my wife on Wednesday and enjoyed a great table outside on a beautiful spring evening. Our server was lovely and recommended a great bottle of white wine. Like many other places they are dog friendly and our dog had a great time. We ordered goat cheese, pan con tomate and chorizo with honey. Everything was excellent and we will be adding this to our regular rotation.

Yelp
The gentleman working here was very rude and passive aggressive. My friends and I had been walking around in the area and happened to stop right in front of this restaurant to Google search cafes to go to. Initially we thought we were standing in front of a wine shop and that it was closed since we didn't see lights on and no one was eating or drinking in front of it. Suddenly, a man came up to us and loudly asked "How can I help you? This area is for customers of Zona d'Ombra. It's not for you to stand here." Although he asked how can he help us, he was clearly being sarcastic because immediately after he said it, he quickly went back inside the restaurant before hearing our answer. The staff was so rude and scared us. He could have been professional about it and simply came over to us to explain the situation and ask us to move away instead of being passive aggressive, petty, and loud to draw attention to us. Looking through reviews on Google and Yelp, there seems to be a common trend with this particular person. I would not recommend or support this business.

Yelp
I really do love this place. The wine selections are exceptional and at great price points. The food is very good. It's not a full restaurant, but if you're like me and can make a meal out of cheese and bread, it turns into a full restaurant very quickly. The staff is a bit salty, but they're attentive and efficient. The meats and cheeses are good quality, and the setting is pleasant. I've been here several times already. I'm in.

Yelp
Very friendly, heartfull and qualified service. We got wine to taste and then we've choosen our favorites. The food is awesome. It's simply perfekt tapas. The place is quiet and a little bit hidden - and this makes Zona d'Ombra a special Restaurant in such a city.

Yelp

Yelp
Saw this place mentioned on Eater as one of the must-visit places in Barcelona. It's on a quiet street in the Gothic Quarter and is a little wine store with a bar and a few high top tables. They have all sorts of great Spanish wines and will help you with your selection. There's also a super reasonable wine flight option where for 5 euros you can try 3 different wines. An excellent choice if you're not so familiar with Spanish wine. There's a small menu of tapas and snacks. The staff were super friendly and helpful. This is a fabulous place to stop by for a drink and tasty little snack.

Yelp
Zona d'Ombra was recommended to us by multiple people so we had to stop in for some pre-dinner glasses of wine (or two... maybe three). This is a lovely little spot in the Gothic quarter with a nice, and varied, wine list. They do serve some tapas also, although we did not order any as we were going to an early (8:30 pm) dinner. This was a very nice place to stop in for quick, or not so quick, pre-dinner glasses of wine.

Yelp
Great tapas! Excellent wine selection. Off the beaten track. Nice atmosphere. The owner was a great advisor on picking wines.

Yelp
Our first night in Barcelona, we decided to check out a wine bar and have tapas. Sharon E. was nice enough to suggest it to us. Quick Tip: if you're traveling to a city and need some suggestions, contact a fellow elite Yelper. They'll steer you in the right direction. We ordered a few glasses of wine and were given some sliced salami and crunchy breadsticks. We ordered cheese crochettes, jamon iberico, and had the chocolate ice cream with olive oil & sea salt for dessert. Yum! Not a bad start to our trip to Spain. The service was top notch and the decor was modern. The only weird thing was that there was a lady with her poodle at a nearby table. We were inside! Is this normal? I suspect that she was a good friend of the owners but for me, I know it's not sanitary to bring your dog into a restaurant, the patio perhaps, but not the restaurant. Otherwise, the food was delicious but the place is tucked away along some alleys. There aren't street signs on posts, rather they are located on buildings so keep a lookout for the correct street. Zona d'Ombra is located near a steakhouse if that helps.

Yelp
Bad wine was surprising given the selection. Table service was very friendly but I would want to annoy the passive-aggressive bartender/owner. Cheese plate was nice.

Yelp
Lovely out of the craziness wine and Tapas. Delicious ham plate and cheese plate. The delicious peppers, wonderful cava and gin and tonics. Recommended by a local - and well worth the short walk. Planning our barcelona lives - inspiring!

Yelp
Really lovely little out of the way wine bar in the heart of the Gotic neighborhood. They have a great selection of wine for sale or for a small corking fee you can stay and drink there. The interior is warm and cozy with an alcove towards the back that can seat a larger group. They also have seating in a small square shared with two or three other restaurants. Not busy or noisy but still good for people watching. They have a tapas menu and we had several nibbles which were nothing too spectacular but hit the spot and were perfect along side the wines that were recommended to us by one of the owners. (They have an English menu and most of the staff does speak English but we were the only Americans there the two times we went)

Yelp
Nice place family run apparently, good wine. Spotted glasses, needed to be cleaned. Finished our wine before the the waitress returned for our tapas order. She was pretty busy but apparently forgot about us.

Yelp
Good wine! Open on Sundays and a good spot for tasting wines and selecting some to take home. Nice venue in the gothic quarter especially if you can snag a spot in the sun on a sunny day. They have 4 spots in the back of the plaza and the other chairs are for the nearby spots. Tapas were ok, wine really is the star here! Decent friendly service.

Tina K.

Yelp
This place is in a quiet tucked away alley, difficult for typical cruise-line tourists to easily stumble upon. Staff speaks English and is happy to recommend a wine tasting to expose you to Spanish Catalonian wine. *i didn't realize wine tasting was an option until another couple next to me asked about it* Of the tapas, my friend and I enjoyed most the (1) tapa de tartar de salmón noruegon (tapa of Norwegian salmón), and (2) croqueta en copa (croquette in a cup)... specifically the spinach. Would def recommend coming to this place (I came twice because it wasn't as much of a tourist trap as most other places) and would also suggest just coming to check out the little court yard where this place is (because there's also another VERY highly rated tapas place next door... Be warned though, the place next door has abnormal hours of operation)

Yelp
This place has a love-hate relationship with tourists. There are two menus for tapas - one in Spanish, one in English. The prices on the Spanish menu are significantly cheaper. But if you are smart enough to decline to be ripped off, prepare to be treated poorly by the staff. They have a huge wall of wine, but not much else as far as decor. It felt a lot more like California wine country than Spain. My guy and I came in looking for tapas and a little wine (though we were taking it easy on the wine, having overdone it lately). We sat down, I used the restroom, came back, looked over the menu, and were dismayed to notice the difference in prices. We were looking for something a bit more substantial as well. We decided to try a different place. The server then gave us a hard time about using the bathroom without buying anything. It wasn't done intentionally to trick him into letting me use the restroom, but giving me a hard time about it certainly isn't going to change my mind about wanting to patronize this place. I might have come back another time when I wanted to try some fancy wine, but now I'll make a point to avoid it. See some of my other reviews for better options. (hint: La Alcoba Azul is just two doors down and the service is much friendlier!)

Yelp
A lovely wine list in a remarkable location. More wines by the glass than any other Enoiteca that we visited. This place also doubles up as a wine shop for you to swing by and a home a bottle or two for your hotel/home for the evening. You can choose to either sit inside or on their outdoor terrace in the middle of the quiet Jewish Quarter. One of our favorite visits was when a local quitarist played for the small group of patrons outside while people were sipping on their wines. A great place for anyone looking for a quiet getaway for a glass of Spanish wine right in the heart of the city.

Yelp
The food here is so-so, and the owner acts like he has a stick up his a**. My gf and I came here for tapas during the evening. We were seated by the owner who never said a word nor made us feel welcome. She orders a wine and I asked for tap water. Without saying a word, he came back with a glass of wine and a little bottle water. I clarified again I wanted tap water and he said "we don't have tap water". I look around, I see our next table with a different server has glasses of tap water, and La Rambla street nearby has plenty of public water fountain. I asked that waitress for a glass of tap water and she got me one without hesitation. Of course, the dick of an owner sees this and starts yelling at her then comes yelling at me for ordering tap water from her. I really should have just left right there and then in retrospect, but we were tired. If you like being treated like crap, be his guest.

Yelp
Very romantic interior with a lovely wine selection on display. Food was good. Service was great. It was a lovely stop for tapas.

Yelp
We stumbled onto this place by accident and were treated quite well. We made a point to drop in again a couple of days later. We only had wine - no food (other than the little snack plate they provided, which was welcome). If what a poster said about there being different prices on the English and Spanish menus is true, that's b.s and ought to change. I didn't notice it, and actually I can't remember which language was on our menu.

Yelp
The food is delicious and the owner was incredibly nice. We otdered baked croquetas, padron peppers, cheese, olives, anchovies tapas, sardines tapas.

Amreena A.

Yelp
They just kicked us out because we said we don't drink wine. We asked if we could order food and they said 'no, our food is all paired with our wines. We are a wine shop.' Um, we always eat a tapas bars in Spain. We don't drink, but love the food. This place pretty much refused to serve us. And they were not nice about it. This place is tucked away in the alleys and we spent 20 minutes in pouring rain trying to find it. Not cool!!

Yelp
I was here on a visit to Barcelona last year and was just looking up the place to recommend to someone and felt compelled to write a quick review. As a single woman traveling alone on business, I felt very welcomed as I sat at the bar by myself. I'm in the wine business in California was super pleased with the careful selection of local wines and passion of the owners about the various bodegas. And the wines were terrific. I'll admit I didn't have much to eat and I wasn't there to dine but to learn about the wines, but it did not disappoint. I plan to return on a future visit.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick glass of wine and was treated to a real expert on Spanish wines. Expect to go back for more wine and tapas. Great atmosphere tucked away in the Gothic Quarter

Joe D.

Yelp
This place is a great find. Old Barcelona and great tapas. Croquettes are atypical and amazing. Prices are so good and food is even better. So glad to have stumbled on to this hole in the wall.
