New Business Traveler: For Hotelier Ari S. Heckman, Baltimore Is a Playground

"In terms of vintage, there's a place called The Zone that's about half a block from the hotel. It's a little bit campier and a little bit more costume, but also really good."

Owner was very welcoming! Didn’t happen to catch her name but she’s amazing, very sweet and open to conversation. I did like the variety of clothing. Although cities don’t give you enough room to work with, she made it happen. The jewelry there is definitely worth checking out! The rings, necklaces, belt buckles, and bracelets were all very sick! I didn’t get a chance to buy anything but I would definitely stop by again!

Google
It’s a cute spot and she definitely has loads of vintage pieces that authentic and cute ! I took one star off because I wish there were more curvy/ plus size friendly options. Most sizes I saw were 10 and down. And another star off because the fitting room had a lot of dust in the corner which activated my allergies. I’ll still go back though as I saw some nice leather jackets and jewelry- I didn’t get those as I was on a mission for something else. The shop owner is super friendly and helpful though. She has a great sense of style herself and definitely has an eye for detail

Google
What a gem! Great funky thrift store with a good selection of clothing & accessories for reasonable prices. Got a few pieces and definitely will be back for more! To top it off, Donna is AMAZING!!! Not only friendly & fun to talk to in the store, but she also went above and beyond when we had to go after closing time to recover our house keys (got lost in all the fun). We really appreciate it and cannot thank her enough! Definitely a day of adventures and look forward to coming back!

I almost don’t want to write this review just to keep this place a neighborhood secret, but Zone is EASILY my favorite consignment shop I’ve ever been to! The selection is so wide, chic and fantastic. Donna - the owner - was such a delight and has a truly incredible eye for style. She took the time to really help my friend and I find the exact right pieces for us and made us feel immediately at home.

My daughter and I were visiting Baltimore from NYC. On a whim, we decided to check out this vintage clothing store. From the moment we walked in we knew we hit jackpot. Authentic vintage pieces from the 40’s -80’s- and almost all in excellent condition. Donna, the owner, makes the shopping experience fun. Besides being super patient and friendly (the store was close to closing when we arrived) she passes you pieces she knows will work for your body type. She has an incredible eye for detail so it almost felt as if we had our very own personal stylist. It felt like a dress-up party. We left with everything from authentic flannel shirts, to Tibetin jewelry, tweed blazers, to a cashmere sweater with a mink collar. Thus far, the best selection of vintage pieces. We can’t wait to go back! This is a legit review!

Google
This is a cool shop, but the lack of sizes over 12 was very disheartening. Unfortunately this is not the store to visit if you're plus size, or even "mid size". Cool hats tho!

Google
Loved loved LOVED this place! Donna has an incredible collection of clothes spanning the 50s to 90s with even some sprinkling of 1930s and 40s! It was wonderful meeting Donna - she is passionate about the clothes and finding the right clothes for you. I felt like I walked out with a new friend (and a beautiful, barely worn 1960s dress and jacket and handmade circle skirt). I will be back!

Google
My favorite place to buy clothes! The first time I stopped in I was doing a photo shoot with a friend and we were just looking to take a few pictures in the store. The owner ended up putting outfits together for me to try on and basically directing the shoot lol! It turned out amazing. I ended up leaving with quite a few pieces. I've only been a few times but I can't wait to go back! Coolest place eveeeer!

Yelp
Quaint Thrift Shop out in Baltimore and totally worth the Lyft drive. It's located in a small area with all sorts of random stuff. Like eateries, a tattoo shop, and them! The owner was so nice and accommodating. She was recommending stuff for us to try on the whole time. The prices vary. All of their stuff are gems from vintage coats, blouses, dresses, tops, jackets you name it they have it. I had fun coming here on my trip and it was definitely one of my highlights. I even copped a cute little mood ring and it was cool because I never see those around anymore lol

Yelp
I remember The Zone in the 80s and it's still fabulous - we always find great one-of-a-kind pieces. The buyer has great taste. Can't wait to go back. Wish they were open on Sundays!

Yelp
Been going here for years. It is THE PLACE in terms of cost and selection to get the best thrift and vintage clothing in any city I have shopped in. Donna, the owner, has an impeccable eye. I have never left a visit to this store without a remarkable purchase and always at a damn good price. Five stars in not nearly enough.

Yelp
Super cool spot for vintage garments. I was looking for a wedding dress; I did find a perfect 20's style drop beaded dress for a good price (I think it was 80$). When I regularly thrift, I'm more of a quick cheap shopper, but this place has awesome period pieces so it makes sense that most of the items are more expensive than goodwill/sally's/etc (but I didn't see many things that were unreasonably priced). The owner was cool too!

Yelp
What a fun & amazing store full of gems!! Donna pulled out items that she thought we would like after we told her what we were thinking of finding. We'll be back for sure!

Yelp
Excellent little vintage consignment shop!! Great deals for the men and the ladies. My wife has scored shoes worth hundreds at a fraction; I got the coolest vintage leather coat that was made in London; all sorts of cool deals await! Nice selection of jewelry, flasks, other cool doodads. Service friendly and knowledgeable too. Great place for high end bargain hunting!

Yelp
I love vintage boutiques! This store is quite small but their selections are vast. They've been in business since 1981 which is cool but they could definitely use a thorough cleaning. I couldn't stop sneezing and my throat was itching a bit. Nevertheless, I still scoured the entire store and tried on a few pieces. Yes, I'm that much of a vintage bug! The woman in the store seemed a bit standoffish but she did pleasantly answer my questions which is well enough for me. I purchased a really cute high waist, acid wash jean pencil skirt and it looks great on me! I also purchased a pair of pink and gold triangle earrings. I saw a few other pieces I'd purchase so next time I'm in Baltimore I'll probably stop by.

Yelp
Located right across the street from Dooby's, the Zone is one of the best, affordable vintage stores in the area. The clothing is neatly organized into jumpsuits, jackets, pants, dresses, etc. I am a big fan of their sunglasses! Unique, variety, and most are only $10!!! Extensive earring section. Got 2 pairs of earrings for just under $14! The owner was so helpful in helping me find jewelry items. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Best shopping in Mount Vernon, hands down. Even better than Killer Trash in Fells, Dubois Textiles is still the best in Baltimore, though, thrift wise. But this store has the BEST accesories, and lesser known cute things that you would not find anywhere else. The owner is hella friendly too. She's had this store for a couple of years. She's pretty much a legend:)

Yelp
Need an ugly sweater for your holiday party? Look no further. This place is a treasure trove! Racks line the walls of vintage everything you can imagine from every era. We managed to find four near-hideous sweaters and sweater-vests to be ultra-competitive in our upcoming holiday party. Additionally, the accessories are commendable - the costume jewelry is extensive and gawdy enough to meet every diva's dreams. Make a statement at a formal event, or just stroll down the avenue on any given day with a wardrobe from the Zone! The best part of the Zone experience came from our interaction with the girl behind the counter. She had short hair, dyed gray and rather spiked, with black rimmed glasses, and the cutest thrift outfit. She was encouraging - and definitely wore the clothes (not vice versa) and walked the walk; she inspired us to take our sweaters to the next level!

Yelp
This store is awesome I come in every time I am in town I stopped awhile ago because there was a pitbull in the store and friendly or not I was not comfortable. But know the dog is gone and the store has to be the best consignment around I travel alot around the world and this store gets me every time. I am not sure if its the owner who works there but she is super friendly and helpful there is no pressure to buy at all and she is very informative. The prices are a little more than most but I must say the quality of clothing are a little better than most!!!! Most of the leather jackets are $60 some $30!!! I would happen to love the $60 dollar ones so Im waiting on a sale!!lololol This place is a place that you go to and you never come out empty handed whoever the buyer is they understand the customers !From formal dresses to dashikis this is the place. The clothes are trendy and they represent every period in the 1900's it seems. I highly highly recommend this to to the world and I am not sure if I like the merchandise or the customer service better!! Long Live the Zone!!!!!!!!lolol P.s I had to make an exchange for a belt a friend bought me the wrong size and Bam no problem at all!!! Customer Service goes a long way its the kind of place you would want to work at!!!!!!!!!!!! Wooohoooo

Yelp
This place is adorable! Came here as a Baltimore visitor based on the Yelp reviews, and can confidently say I wasn't disappointed. It was colorful, there was variety between dresses, styles, accessories, men's and women's apparel, and if I could fit into vintage sizes a little better I probably would've bought everything. :) Jewelry selection was great, with a lot of variety and good quality items. Store owner was also very helpful about recommendations for things to do in the city.

Yelp
Halloween, Ugly Christmas party sweater, themed party, just for fun, cause you can rock retro! I don't really need an excuse to swing into The ZONE but you'll definitely find me here for all of the above reasons. Today I found 3 awesome hats - a blue one and a pink one for the holidays and a white 1920s style with dark deep blue feathers for a wedding. I also love the silver jewelry and of course they are all semi-precious stones but they also have retro and some gaudy pieces too. This place is great.

Yelp
This place is a super cute thrift store with vintage looks for guys and gals. The curator of their merchandise does a fabulous job of getting good quality items. But this also means they are a little more pricey. I did find the perfect pair of sunglasses here though which I am super excited about because I also have trouble finding sunglasses that fit comfortably while still being stylish. They felt incredibly comfortable on my head and had UV protection. The ladies section takes up most of the store and they have some really cute dresses and accessories and even some cool androgynous looks if that's your style. The men is definitely a bit more limited, but I really liked the ties there and found a few that were fun, fashionable, and that I could wear to work. The owner is very friendly and welcoming and can really help give you some suggestions. There was a hat that I was on the fence about so she knocked a few dollars off which I thought was fair and ended up getting it.

Yelp
Being a frequent shopper at The Zone on Charles Street has always brought a smile to my face. The staff is courteous and they know me when I walk in, so it is somewhat like being a cast member on Cheers, more like NNNOOOORRRMMM. They know my style of fashion - which is always outside of the box. I did not mention the fashion - THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY FANTABULOUS if you love the eclectic feel and love to turn heads and receive plenty of compliments, then you need to visit The Zone. You will not be disappointed. Baltimore Fashion Week

Yelp
We came in to find something to wear to a 70s themed party. Donna found us some great things to wear and everything was very reasonably priced! We had a really fun time looking at things and chatting with Donna. We will definitely go back!

Steffi B.

Yelp
Awesome place. Cool clothing at good prices, and Donna is the best.

Yelp
This is such a wonderful shop. I never leave empty-handed and rarely leave with just one thing. Donna, the owner, and Nicky are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. This place is a treasure!

Yelp
Great little vintage store tucked up on Charles Street! You could easily spend an hour browsing through all of the goodies in here. They have everything from vintage women's clothes, men's clothes, costume supplies, wigs, hats, costume jewelry, fine jewelry, shoes, sunglasses, gloves, jackets, and more. What I like is that there are different price ranges so you can find something no matter what your budget. The woman working here was incredibly helpful since I came here specifically for a punk masquerade costume party. She pulled out some fun pieces for me to try on and I ended up with some great finds that didn't cost a fortune and that I will be able to use again. Everyone at the party loved my outfit. I wish I had more time to look through everything that day, but I will definitely be back to keep checking out the new stuff they get.

Yelp
Just went to the Zone yesterday. First of all Donna the owner is a gem, love her and love her store. You get good threads for your money. The best part about it is that you won't have to worry about being a "Mall Clone" She even has realistic sizes for the real woman like myself who has hips for days. Like the previous reviewer her accessory selection is sick, I just purchased some to die for shades for 10 bucks. Instead of giving the big corporate wigs in the mall rat world your money spend it on the local small businesses.

Yelp
Really a gem of a place! Somewhat hard to find because there's no sign and it's inside a doorway (just look for the street number), but they have really cool stuff. Very vintage, lots of stuff from the 70's and 80's and some more modern items. Most are in great condition and very unique. Really kind and knowledgeable staff as well, my boyfriend and I spent over an hour there trying on fun things and they were always happy to oblige us. Ended up spending about $100 each, not a cheap thrift store but very unique and wonderful. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
This is the sort of consignment store I would go to if I needed an outfit for a 70s-themed psychedelic dance part. Neon colors and embroidered blouses galore! The collection is decidedly eclectic and prices aren't terrible but the clothes are a little too wacky for my every day needs. While it may not be my go-to spot when I need to add some life into my wardrobe it's definitely a fun place to check out and play dress-up for awhile.

Stacy R.

Yelp
My absolute all-time favorite!!!! I come here every time I'm in Baltimore. I love that it's so unique. I always leave with a full bag or two

Rebecca S.

Yelp
I stopped in last week just to see what they have, and there was WAY more in the store than I would have ever guessed from outside. It's not a lot of chic things, but there were a lot of leather jackets and some funky things--I walked out with a vintage dress, a silly party dress and a pair of leather boots... for $40. WOOT.

Yelp
The Zone is the grandest attic treasure trove of vintage that any zany fashion-plate could ever imagine. My 13 yr old daughter and I played dress-up in The Zone for two-plus hours, and could easily have stayed longer. The clothes are simply fabulous, and the prices are very manageable. We left with three winter coats - one fur - for under a hundred dollars, with sunglasses 'thrown in' by the owner, who by the way kept the store open for an extra hour to let us continue our fun. Clearly, exquisite taste goes into purchasing for this store, and I doubt I will ever go back to Nordstrom or Macy's after discovering The Zone on Charles.

Jane V.

Yelp
I love this store!! They always have the coolest stuff, and a great range of sizes. One of the only (maybe the only?) vintage store that has been in Baltimore longer that I have, and it's still going strong. Very helpful staff, constantly changing stock, cool accesories/sunglasses/hair dye -- one of my favorite places to shop!!

Laura R.

Yelp
My husband and I really love this store! The owner is wonderful... very kind, helpful, and friendly. We found some great, unique vintage clothes at reasonable prices. What a gem!

Yelp
Great selection and friendly service. Really enjoyed browsing here and found a well-priced bracelet that I love. The owner gave great tips on what to see and do in the area. Nice place to spend a few on lovely vintage finds!
google avatar

Katy L.

Yelp
Just went there yesterday for the first time, and it was fantastic! The woman who owns it and works there is helpful, friendly and very personable. The prices are very reasonable, and a lot of the items are marked down. Great variety of unique pieces from different eras, particularly the '60s through '90s. I could spend hours there.

Yelp
The Zone is funky, fun and affordable! It was just the place my colleagues and I needed to be in as we selected looks for an upcoming photo shoot. The store is set-up in a way in which you happen upon things. There are layers and layers of terrific finds. Donna, the owner, was our trusted guide through it all. After giving her a sense of the looks we were going for and she gleefully helped us find pieces that fit the bill. It is clear that she really enjoys what she does, which further enhanced our shopping experience. You can see some of the wonderful pieces we selected at http://www.afrohouse.org/

Yelp
One of my favorite shopping spots downtown unlike some of the boutiques near by ....the woman with the glasses is so nice and accomodating. I was just there this past weekend and she was having a FAB jewlery sale. I felt like a kid in a candy store with only $1 but wanting to buy everything....lol

Anie S.

Yelp
Loved this place! I've been a few times and my experience is always delightful! The owner is amazing; very friendly and obviously knew what she was talking about. The store has a huge selection of clothes and accessories ranging from all different prices, but even the more expensive pieces didn't really strike me as overpriced in comparison to several other boutique/vintage stores. I've bought quite a few formal and semi-formal dresses from here and is each pretty spectacular. Can't wait until my next visit here!

Kimberly R.

Yelp
The owner was extremely helpful, kind, creative. She helped me pick out outfits and shared a few stories that made me smile. Loved all the unique pieces!

Srebrina M.

Yelp
I lived in Mount Vernon for a few years and The Zone was my to go place to look for great and unique finds. The owner has quite a talent when it comes to stocking the place with great clothes and accessories. I got an awesome shirt for 16$ which I eyeballed for a while until I finally got it(thankfully it didn't fit anyone so it was still there), I ended up meeting my boyfriend for a first time wearing that shirt so it has been my lucky one ever since. I have gotten a lot of jewelry from there, even managed to loose some of it. Her prices are great, and so is the selection! I love the place and I need to go check it out soon again, just wondering how I'm gonna up the stairs with my baby.
