I had previously only visited one zoo (in Wrocław), and I have to admit that Wrocław has a very large number of animals and an excellent Afrykarium. However, the Leipzig Zoo left a stronger and more positive impression on me.
It is designed in a completely different way. The enclosures are continuous, cohesive, and landscaped, without traditional cages. The whole space feels like one large environment rather than a collection of separate exhibits. Animals have the ability to hide, so they are not always visible and I saw this as a huge plus. It clearly signals that animal welfare and comfort are prioritized over tourist attractions, which I fully appreciate.
As someone who is generally rather opposed to the idea of zoos, visiting the Leipzig Zoo was rather spontaneous. I was curious about the rain forest. But Leipzig turned out to be the place where I felt this is how a zoo could actually be. The animals do not feel like exhibits, and the whole experience is calm, thoughtful, and coherent.
Amazing place to spend your free time, especially if you have a yearly ticket like locals do.
