If you are interested in Thai records, Zudrangma Records is an essential stop.
I first visited years ago when I was living in Bangkok, back when my tastes were still very focused on UK bass music. At the time I did not really understand what I was looking at. The shop specializes in Thai sounds like molam, luk thung, Thai funk, and psychedelic music from the 60s and 70s, along with carefully selected reissues and related global music.
Coming back years later with a better understanding of those sounds made the visit even more rewarding.
Maft Sai was not there when I visited, but the guy behind the counter was incredibly helpful. Once he realized I was looking for the rarer side of molam and luk thung, he pointed me in the right direction and helped surface some excellent records.
I ended up walking out with around 50 records, which says everything about the quality of the selection.
The space itself is more than just a shop. It also functions as a small bar and listening space with DJs playing records, which gives it a relaxed atmosphere that feels closer to a music hangout than a typical record store.
If you are digging for Thai music in Bangkok, this place should absolutely be on your list.
I waited about 12 years between visits, which in hindsight was a mistake. Next time I am back in Bangkok I will not leave it that long.
