If your looking for 78 rpm records then this ain't the place!!! I have been to this store twice and everytime I am told they don't sell the 78s they have (and they are just lying around in the open). Because of this, the owner isn't very helpful at all when it comes to 78s, and was kinda rude. As a young 78 collector, I didn't feel welcomed! The owner prides himself on helping people with records he told me. However my experiences at Zulu has proved totally otherwise.
I don't know about their LPs or 45s, but the store is generally very disorganized. Prices are ok, but not the best I've seen by any means.
Finally, In my opinion, any store that's been in the business for so long, and still has to look up prices for records is not worth it. There are plenty of other record stores in Metro Vancouver that are superior.
Edit: I would like to respond to the comment made by the owner.
1. While my father may have gotten frustrated and used a swear word, in which I apologize for, the owner was being a bit dismissive. Usually it's a smooth transaction at other places.
2. We/ I didn't do any "crate digging" of the sort, this is a lie. As a rule thumb I only crate dig if the owners of the store encourage it. The 78s I grabbed were litteraly lying on a stack of vinyl in the middle of the store! There were no post-it notes or anything to say these were apart of a trade. Even then, the owner states they wouldn't have been for sale. From just a skim view, these were the only 78s in the store. So basically, no 78s are for sale to my knowledge if they are kept hidden and not out in the open.
3. 78s are pretty easy to price, I even offered to tell you the prices then and there, but you insisted I give you my phone number and you'd get back to me. Btw the owner never got back about prices. I have been to almost all record stores in B.C, and Washington State, and owners can usually price a whole box (100) in maybe 10-20 minutes. The owner fails to take into account that I had brought 5 records to desk! A quick search on sites like Popsike or Gripsweat would've yielded accurate prices aswell.
4. You were very back and forth about if you sell them or not. By saying you don't usually sell them, makes me believe you don't or wouldn't have sold the records I brought up. I am the one with thousands of 78s in my collection. As the more experienced 78 collectors say, "you should never buy a 78 at market price". I frequently price 78s, and even occasional LPs and 45s, it takes little time what so ever.
Another thing to mention is that The first time I was ever at the store, I picked a 78 (Victor red seal, worth almost nothing, due to it being a classical title). The store called back later and said that even though it's not super valuable, that they would like to keep it for a display. When I went into the store recently, I didn't see any display with the record. In this case you had time to price, and still refused to sell me the record.
5. Again the owner states that the 78s weren't for sale, so why tell me you sometimes sell them? I have yet to see that.
6. You state that I was respectful and decent, so why haven't I recieved any help?
7. Being not the best place for 78s doesn't excuse the way we were treated in the transaction. You think Beat St Records is the best source for 78s? No! They barely have any most of the time, but atleast they sell them and price them quick and fair.
8. As I said in the beginning, my father may have used a course word. However, we were pretty civil until you started to waste our time, making it unsure if these were even for sale to begin with. There was no shouting from us that's for sure.
9. You have other people working in your store right? So why not have them price them if your so busy? We are very patient, but don't appreciate the way WE were treated as well. You only offered to take my number when you stated that they usually aren't for sale, but maybe are?
10. The owners response sums it up really. If you aren't after the same old stuff, then they probably can't help you.
