This is our first experience in an Austrian traditional food restaurant Zum Alten Fassl was amazing. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed by very genuine man (waiter) with great English language. Even we do not have any reservation they allowed us to dine and mention that the outdoor garden is reserved, so the only option is to dine inside which is comfortable and we are totally fine with. The food we ordered was fantastic, showcasing authentic local flavors that made our experience even more special. Each dish was a delightful representation of Austrian taste and culinary heritage, and we are very happy with our choice of food. What truly stood out, however, was the outstanding service provided by the staff. They were attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly, enhancing our overall dining experience. Me and my family is very international family, as we are mixed of Maldivian, Chinese and Latvian, and this trip me and my wife travel to Vienna to visit our daughter. We chose this lovely restaurant because it was suggested by our daughter. The best part of our experience was the staff speak fluent English, and it was easy, even we have German speaking with in us. If you're looking for traditional Austrian cuisine I highly recommend Zum Alten Fassl. and i will comeback to explore more options when I return to Vienna.

Great food, but lacking in atmosphere We came to Fassl really looking forward to trying a traditional schnitzel — and the food definitely didn’t disappoint! Everything was well-prepared and delicious. However, the overall atmosphere was a bit underwhelming. The service felt rushed and not very genuine, which made us feel more like we were being processed than welcomed. It’s a shame, because the quality of the food deserves a warmer, more authentic experience.

Always a great atmosphere at Zum Alten Fassl. Busy but in a good way - feels alive and warm, not stressful. The place has this classic Viennese vibe that’s hard to find. The menu is full of traditional dishes and everything we tried was honestly delicious. You can feel they care about quality. It’s the kind of place where you enjoy both the food and the feeling of just being there.

We had the most fantastic dinner here tonight! The food was delicious - lots of Austrian cuisine. Nice big portions, lively atmosphere and good value for money. The staff are super efficient, friendly and welcoming. Strongly recommend visiting this place, it’s so worth it! Make sure you make a reservation, it gets super full.

Great pub with a great atmosphere.. since we first visited it, we don't go anywhere else when we are in Vienna. We even leave Vienna on a later train to have dinner here (unfortunately the opening hours are only from 5 pm). The food is always perfect, selection also for vegetarians, nice staff.

Recommend by my airbnb host. She told me this is the must try spot for the local Viennese food which is definitely true! We only order the Snitzel and it was amazing, and the cranberry sauce make it even more perfect. It was late dinner near to 10pm but the place was still full of people. The lady waiter was friendly and politely. Manage to get a seat even though she told me they do not take it any more order if we didn’t make reservation.

I’ve made it a tradition to visit this restaurant every year whenever I’m in Vienna—it’s consistently been one of my top three dining spots in the city. However, my recent experience fell short of expectations for several reasons: 1. Dish Unavailability – By around 8 PM, the seasonal deer dish was already sold out. Given its popularity, I would have expected the kitchen to anticipate demand better and ensure availability for a longer period. This was, unfortunately, the biggest disappointment of the evening. 2. Disorganized Staff – The team appeared stressed and overwhelmed. There seemed to be confusion around reservations, and the overall friendliness of the staff could have been better. 3. Restaurant Atmosphere – The ambiance felt noticeably less inviting than in previous years. It’s unclear whether there were changes to the decor or if the overly bright lighting was to blame, but the cozy atmosphere I remembered was missing. 4. Indoor Temperature – The dining room was uncomfortably warm, which detracted from the overall experience. A restaurant of this caliber should have better climate control.

They didn't have chicken schnitzel, but the waiter (who speaks in a very cool american accent) somehow convinced me to get "half a chicken" (deep fried). I thought I would regret it, but it was super delicious, and my boyfriend got a veal schnitzel which was also tasty. The service was top notch, the atmosphere is nice as well. The only downside - no AC indoors, so it's hot.

Yelp
10/10 recommend. Absolutely incredible food for really decent prices! This was my first time eating Viennese schnitzel and wow. Mind blown. Impeccable service. Super cozy! Also just seemed super authentic.

Yelp
We had the most lovely dinner at Zum Allen Fassl. This warm bistro is tucked in a neighborhood and was the perfect spot for us to dine with Vienna locals. Our waiter made great menu suggestions when we asked, and there were plenty of staff supporting a really well run dinner service. We dined mid-week, and thankfully we made reservations and if seems like we got the last table because the restaurant was completely full. The food was hearty and delicious, especially their signature tar tar starter. Wow! Strongly recommended.

Yelp
PURCHASED: Original Viennese veal schnitzel with potato and lamb's lettuce Price: €18.50 PROS: - Excellent service: Europeans like a true dining experience (i.e., conversations at length and food to come out in the right order). I wanted to try this restaurant before having to attend an online meeting and therefore had to rush dinner. When the server got the word, all of our food was immediately brought out. I was even able to pay very quickly so that we could finish our meal and leave immediately to catch my meeting. I very much appreciated this. - Far from tourists: The food was original and high-quality (per my Viennese friend) AND it was far from any street that would spawn tourists like me. - Classic interior: The interior was very 18th century-like which helps with the Viennese ambience. (To the owners of this restaurant: you are doing an excellent job!) CONS: - None IMPRESSION: I came for dinner with my Viennese friend. Far from the city center, this schnitzel-serving restaurant is an unassumingly authentic Viennese spot. Food 10/10, service 10/10 and perfect for any tourist who doesn't wish to be a tourist. Tschüss!

Yelp
When I first return to Vienna, I always have a couple of Viennese meals to celebrate being back in The Imperial City. One of the best places for me to go is a local Beisl (think Viennese bistro) just a few minutes walk from where I live. That Beisl is 'Zum Alten Fassl" and it is simply one of the finest and most popular Beisls in all of Vienna. Not only is it successful because of its tasty Viennese cuisine (Wienerküche) but also because it is so friendly to residents and regulars as well as being engaging to visitors and people outside the neighborhood. Every restaurant in Vienna offers up various pumpkin dishes in October and Zum Alten Fassl is no exception. I recently enjoyed a delicious Kürbis-Erdäpfel Strudel (pumpkin & potato strudel) in a cream dill sauce. And for dessert I ordered a favorite Topfenknödel (soft cheese dumpling) in a fruit sauce. A Schwechater Zwickl beer was the perfect accompaniment. That my friends is indeed a tasty meal in my still-going-strong friendly local Beisl "Zum Alten Fassl!"

Yelp
CASH ONLY. Outstanding Viennese food. My bnb host recommended it as a place locals would go for Austrian food. I showed up solo on a cold November Monday night, and believe it or not they were fully booked. But they offered me a table if I could be finished within an hour, which I could. I ordered a dish called "Fasslpfandl," a chicken breast stuffed with ham and cheese and served atop dumplingy-noodley things in a creamy sauce with some veggies. OMG it was divine. Also enjoyed a 1/4 liter of the house wine. The service was efficient; neither friendly nor brusque. The space feels like old Austria without being kitsch. Overall excellent, and I will return.

Yelp
This hotel was recommended by our hotel concierge as having traditional Austrian fare for a good price. The decor was not fancy, but it was comfortable and warmly inviting. I opted for the Vienna specialty of Tafelspitz, a boiled-beef dish in broth. I was pleasantly surprised at how great it tasted, considering that boiling meat doesn't seem like a sure-fire path to a successful meal. Service was attentive and exceptionally friendly. I'd definitely recommend this spot if you're within a few blocks.

Yelp
I had dinner recently at Zum Alten Fassl. I was searching for a restaurant that served game meats, and Zum Alten Fassl had several game dishes on the menu. The host and server were very friendly. I started with a very tasty pumpkin soup, followed by bacon-wrapped venison medallions, served with potato croquettes and brussels sprouts with other vegetables. The vegetables were pretty good (I usually hate brussels sprouts, but I liked theirs). The small portions of venison, though, seemed overcooked -- very tough and too dry, as was the bacon (very salty, dry, not very smokey). Given my limited experience with Austrian food, I can't say whether the venison was cooked perfectly according to tradition and I don't like that style of cooking or, alternatively, the cook just overcooked the meat. The other diners in the restaurant, which was moderately busy, seemed to be enjoying their meals. I'd return to try more dishes if I were spending an extended period in Vienna. But I wouldn't go back if I were just visiting for a short trip.

Yelp
I guess your mileage may vary with this place. It seems that people who mostly eat home style cooking really love it. One can also see that based on the average kind of customer (above 40, frequently overweight). And maybe it really is high quality for that type of cuisine. I can't really tell because for me, it's all a bit bland. Fried this, fried that. No lighter options. Vegetarian things are heavy on e.g. fatty cheese. Or e.g. fried rucola. Really? Fried salad? To me, it's alright for what it is. Meat is certainly tender and even though everything is pretty hearty, at least stuff is not swimming in fat and it's not overly salty either.

Yelp
Best dining experience in Vienna! The food was amazing. Everything I had was cooked and prepared perfectly. the dished were presented beautifully. I had deer carpaccio for appetizer and deer roast for main course. Even how the vegetables were cooked made them taste amazing. The whole staff was very friendly and attentive. The environment was very cozy and homey. The walls are covered with old posters. All the rooms were candlelit which created a warm ambiance. From beginning to end it was a breathtaking experience.

Yelp
I have eaten here twice so far! New to the neighborhood, I was looking for a quaint out of the way place to eat, and I found it here! Both times we have had good service and amazing Austrian cuisine. The decor is very rustic and homey. Falco actually lived in this building and probally ate here, so if your looking for a great spot out of the way... make a reservation!

Yelp
Did not like the atmosphere nor the service. The food was average. The waitress did not have the patience to explain the menu. The inside of the restaurant was extremely dimly lit - not in a romantic way, but a dingy place sort of a way! Not recommended.

Yelp
Delicious way to start our visit to Vienna. Cosy atmosphere, great local cuisine, lovely service. We had our baby with us and they arranged some milk for him. Wish we had a chance to go back.
