Zum Dürnbräu

A lively, traditional Bavarian restaurant with a similar feel to Hofbräuhaus, though on a much smaller and more intimate scale. Seating is mostly at communal tables, but there are booths available for parties of four or more. Reservations are highly recommended—we went on a Monday night around 6:00 pm and it was already very busy. Service was excellent, and our server spoke very good English, which made things easy. The food was above average with very generous portions. It’s definitely loud, but still comfortable enough to carry on a conversation. One small downside was that the server was a bit pushy about ordering an alcoholic drink instead of just water. The outside Christmas decorations were very cute and added to the festive feel. We probably wouldn’t return for another visit, but if you’re not planning to go to Hofbräuhaus, this is a solid alternative and worth experiencing once.

Food was excellent, beer was delicious, so happy we came here for dinner - we had the pork knuckle and the schnitzel and would definitely recommend! Service was great, Heidi who served us has been there for 26 years - what a hero! She had great tips for wine and food and was such a hoot, we loved chatting with her!

The beer here is great, but the traditional Bayern food is not so yummy as another restaurant I have tried. This pork knuckle has already had its skin and meat separate, and the lean meat is very tough. I don’t know whether it’s fresh or not.

Only had the pleausre of ordering the Kaiserschmarrn, but wow! Besides the enormous portion sizes, the inside of the pancakes was fluffy yet outside had a nice caramelized coating. A lot of other places had apple puree, but the apple sauce here was loaded with apple chunks and several slices. The sweetness combined with the slight sourness is a match made in Heaven - a must try! I'll definitely be back again to try some of their other dishes, from what I visually saw, were also superb.

Great spot with super friendly staff, tasty food, and generous portions. Cozy old-tavern vibes make it perfect for groups of friends. Prices are fair, and the atmosphere feels authentic and welcoming.

Great historical food spot that is off the radar for many visitors in Munich. English menus and staff speaks English. Great food and location just off Marienplatz. We enjoyed our entree choices. Bonus - they will make a small Kaiserschmarrn dessert for 10.90$€. Just ask!

We went four people. I got the first meal.(First pic)Roasted pork and dumpling(potato). We were here to see Germany and we are teenagers. I liked the food. The pork wasn't anything new to me except the dumpling. The texture was weird (something new to my taste) I wouldn't eat it again. I found the waiter there really friendly. His English was really good. He was smiling and we even had a small conversation. Personally, I found the restaurant really welcoming bc of him. He did come check on us too. He stared at us once from far. I count this more as him being curious about seeing people from where we are. The other two people that were with me felt like he was being creepy and didn't like the food. They also stated that they thought the waiter was checking on us because he was afraid that we would leave without paying. I don't see this this way. The toilets were clean. The only problem was that some of the doors wouldn't close and you had to hold them. At the end, I went to the waiter and said thank you for the wonderful service. He smiled and we did a handshake. This was a good experience bc of him. The other waitresses there were gloomy though. The inside wasn't really my taste of place to sit. That's why we say outside. The chairs were okay to sit but not for long.

Very good lunch stop. The bavarian specialties are well executed. The service efficient. There are vegetarian options.

BEYOND AMAZING for so many reasons!! I loved the location. We were able to sit outside and enjoyed all the people passing by. Our server was hospitable and his suggestions were excellent, especially when it came to ordering dessert. The food was served quickly and was hot and beyond delicious. We have been in Germany for a week and I have enjoyed schnitzel every night. This was one of my favorites. The wild cranberry is worth the trip. The entire evening was perfect and a great way to end our stay in Munich. I cannot wait to come back in October because I know exactly where to come for a delicious, authentic meal. Do yourself a favor and avoid the "tourist" restaurant and come here for genuine, delicious and mouth watering food.

Zum Dürnbräu was a fantastic stop in Munich and easily one of my favorite meals in Old Town. I had an excellent experience from start to finish with warm, attentive service and food that really showcased classic Bavarian cuisine done right. I loved the historic feel of the restaurant because it added so much character to the meal and made the experience feel authentically Munich. Everything felt polished but still relaxed, and the vibe was lively without being overwhelming. It is also incredibly convenient to Munich Old Town, which makes it an easy and worthwhile stop while sightseeing. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for great food, great service, and a memorable Bavarian dining experience.

This area of Munich is a rowdy place. Loud. Obnoxiously packed with people. Down a little quit street, around the corner sits this gem. Similar Brauhaus offerings are here and they taste similar. Here it is quiet and peaceful. Service is great. The food was excellent. Low key, low stress, elegantly served faire. The schnitzel was great. The star of the show however was the Kaiserschmarrn. Large portion that was so good. So many different textures and rich almost fried bread pudding flavor. This is the place to go when you've had enough beer halls.

Terrible grumpy waitress served us. Made me change my mind about eating there. Got a beer and left. Food is also over-priced. Why is a plain schnitzel more than a pork knuckle (Schweinhaxen). Would not go back.

If you wanna experience how local ppl drink, I think here is the place. I was amazed at how busy they were at a Friday night was. The bavarian food is amazing. The dark beer is my favorite!! I love the local vibe. The service is excellent. Our lovely server Heidi is beyond amazing, she is very sweet and make sure everything is ok. I'm glad I came here during our vacation in Munic

On our last evening we wanted to finish out our 2 weeks in Germany with the local cuisine. We have enjoyed some amazing local dishes but this place really let us down. The best part of the evening: - the beer and wine -sitting on the patio - the Nürnberger sausage plate. The rest was mediocre. The cordon blue lacked flavor and had very little cheese. The pork knuckle was tough and flavorless. The Apple strudel was doughy with not very many apples. The service was poor. A disappointing end to a wonderful trip. We had reservations and sat in the outdoor seating area. The servers were not the best. It was not that busy.

Oh my goodness we had SUCH A GOOD MEAL at this place. We were in Munich for only a few hours so we had to cram in as much local specialties as possible in as few meals as possible. We also happened to be in Munich during Oktoberfest so shit was on the busier side. Fortunately, we were able to snag some real estate on one of the tables inside without waiting. We both ordered a beer hastily and it was good but I do wish the size of the glass was larger. GF ordered the sausages over a bed of sauerkraut and she says "I thought it was very good". I sampled the sauerkraut which was exquisite. I ordered the cheese noodles which were BETTER. THAN. SEX. I wanted to stop eating it because it was so heavy and in the interest of having room for pretzels and other German shit but I just couldn't. I wish I could tell you the names of these things but their menu is not available on the website and I am unable to find it. The vibe is also very German Beer Hall esque. 100% worth a visit if you're in town and want a good German experience.

This place is amazing!! Great food and the service was superb. We had schnitzel and a roast beef with fried onions and a salad- all super good. The place was packed and very good vibes all around!

"We stumbled into town just like a sacred cow" (David Bowie). Ok. We drove into town and at the suggestion of the hotel dude we went to Durnbrau and we were not disappointed. In fact it was exactly what our second to last dinner on vacation called for. Great German beer. Awesome Vienna Schnitzel (veal) and great pork filet. Sitting amongst the locals on the picnic table row was great. If you're looking for an authentic German dining experience look no further. We finished off our experience with their Apple Strudel. Epic! Now on a personal note...I want Tammy The Tornado to know that being with her these last 30 years of my life has been an E ticket ride on the roller coaster of life! Thank you for the ride!

Wonderful dinner at Zum Durnbrau. Our server was gracious and attentive. Our meals were excellent. My husband had the Dürnbräu Geschichten. Tender pork wrapped in bacon with a rich sauce. I had the Leberkäse. Absolutely fantastic with a fried egg on top. We shared the Nürnberger Rostbratwürstl. Delicious sausage with sauerkraut. Our first meal after arriving in Munich and a terrific experience.

This is a great out of the way down a Passage. We went for lunch and the food was outstanding. I had the Altbayerisch Schnitzel with fried potatoes. My wife had a salad and our friends had a vegetable curry dish that was really good!

Came here looking for a spätzle/käsespätzle experience to make sure we covered Bavarian specialties. Zum Dürnbräu did not disappoint!! The most luxurious decadent dish and I was weirdly obsessed with the salad dressing they used. Underneath the salad was a surprise bit of cold potato salad which some may find odd but I'm here for it all! In true German style, service was direct, quick, and to the point but still very kind. Very nice and quiet patio experience for the time of day that we went. Will definitely go back!

One of the best meals we've had thus far in Europe. Food took quite a while to come out and one dish was a bit dry/bland but the cordon bleh and schnitzel were out of this world! Was really glad we had reservations even mid afternoon on a weekday.

We were a party of ten and had a person in a wheelchair with us. No ramp, no help whatsoever from staff. Inside the restaurant nearly impossible to navigate with a person of special needs. About 20 guests had to get up to move two benches out of the way for us to get through. A very unpleasant experience. Aside from that and something we did not realize until later, the clientele was about 95% men and what seemed to us as part of right wing national fractions of Germany. Unpleasant as well, but we had already ordered food. Which brings me to the last point: the food, which was decent. Not fabulous but good.

Amazing Bavarian food and maybe the best schnitzel I've had. Great place to grab a beer and good food and chill out in their vibey outdoor seating area.

Such a wonderful spot for dinner! Very friendly service and a wonderful environment inside or outside. I had the roast pork and potato dumplings and my husband had the Käsespätzle. (Cheesy noodles with fried onion) The portions were huge! We could have easily split one entree. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing meal in the heart of Munich.

I'm not sure why the reviews are so bad - maybe tourists expect something more touristy? Excellent food, standard service. Can recommend!

Long story short: DO NOT COME HERE AS A TOURIST. Our friends were seated five minutes before us, and were threatened to be kicked out if we didn't show up soon. The place was packed. We ordered four dishes: ente (roasted duck), schweinshaxen (pork roast), sauerbraten (pot roast), and saure breznknödel (bread dumplings). I could not stand the bread dumplings, but the duck was not bad. Nothing special. I would have rated a 3-4, but the service was absolutely abysmal. Any time we tried to get any kind of service, we were always told "one moment" as the server rushed off, and no one would ever return. We asked for waters, were offered flat or sparkling, and received sparkling when we asked for flat. Then they charged us for it, along with included tip. When we were paying, my friend was physically pushed to the counter to pay, and rushed to sign for the bill before we could ask about the additional charges. If you can avoid it, DO NOT give these people any of your business.

Hidden down an alley yet very close to Munich's main tourist hotspots. Mostly German speakers were dining there. Had the Bavarian meatloaf and a special kind of Bavarian sausage with sauerkraut. The sauerkraut was excellent. Call ahead and reserve a table in the courtyard. Friendly staff speaks English and there's and English menu. They take American Express.

I booked a reservation online, and when I arrived the woman that greeted me was rude in saying they were closed for a private party although there were people eating outside (clearly not together)

I read about Zum Durnbrau in the NY Times travel section which listed it as better than the average bavarian cuisine, which you can find all over Munich. The restarunt sits on a side street a few steps away from the street crowds of the tourist area. It has a large outside sitting area and an ivy lined backyard garden which would be great places to sit outside on a sunny day. Inside turns into a beautiful dark old restarunt with long wooden benches and tables. The meal started with Spaten helles larger and a complimentary basket of chewy pretzels. The Bread soup was delicious, a large crock of beef consume with a huge amount of crunchy buttery croutons and crisp fried onions garnished with chives. The salad which came with the snitzel was full of fresh greens, onions, shaved carrots, cucumbers and radishes. The creamy dressing was a compliment to the greens but did not overpower it with a subtle taste of thyme. Our mains were tender, juicy wiener snitzlel pounder thin and lightly battered in bread crumbs and fried. I could not resist ordering the calves head, which was different and very good. The pieces of the head are extracted and stuffed into a sausage, before being sliced, breaded and fried. At a glance the calves head sausage looks like 2 thin slices Italian fried eggplant, but once you bite into it the taste is out of this world. The texture of the offal is different with each bite. Chewey, gooey, soft and fim bits all come together in one amazing dish. Topped with a little a dab of creamy sauce and some lemon and this is a memorable meal. Certainly not your standard bavarian fare.

"Wunderbar!" Back in August, my coworkers and I were in the area, sightseeing, and wanted a place to eat. We googled restaurants nearby and this was a short walk from Marienplatz. As we came around the corner we were pleasantly surprised by the ambiance and atmosphere of this local gem. The host asked if we had a reservation - we didn't. They had plenty of space inside for all 8 of us. We inquired if it was possible to sit outside since we saw a table that could fit us. The host inquired with the manager. She told us we could sit there but it would have to be a quick dinner because of another party who was coming later and would need that table. We all agreed and were more than happy to dine and take off. Later on, Fraulein (Ms) Claudia Zink, the manager, told us we could stay as long as we wanted since the group had preferred a table inside. Her and the waitstaff's hospitality, combined with the delicious food, beautiful Bavarian atmosphere made for an amazing evening. I am recommending this to any of my flying partners who happen to be visiting Munich. I can't wait to return next year. Dankeschon, mein freund! (So very sorry for the late review. Our go-to place while in München. I take all of my fellow travelers here and every single person has loved it. The Wiener Schnitzel is some of the best ever, pork knuckle is great and the Käsespatzel is beyond good.

Ate here our first night in Munich and boy was it awesome. We wanted some authentic German food and beer, and that's exactly what we got plus a delicious apple strudel. They have English menus and our waitress spoke decent English. It's tucked off the main drag so it isn't full of tourist which was nice. Needless to say it was our best meal in Germany and I would go back in a heart beat. Literally 10x better than HB. (Ate there the next night)

This is a tourist trap. We were on training and were with a group, and were directed here by the hotel hosting our meeting. We got to sit at the big table and were served in a friendly way. Then, a basket of pretzels (a specialty from the area) was placed on the table. I ordered vegetarian, the semmelknödel which is like a meat dumpling, with mushrooms as I am vegetarian. I found a bone, in one of the dumplings. Fortunately I found it with my knife while cutting, otherwise it would have been in my mouth and I could have broken my teeth over this ! The servant explained it could be a bone from the animals they cut next to it. Way to go for a vegetarian dish to explain it like this.. I was compensated with a cup of tea, if it were up to me I would have taken it off the bill because repairing teeth could have been a very expensive problem if I chewed on it. Moreover when we paid they asked us if we had the pretzels. We thought they were on the house, like a bread basket in normal restaurants. Unfortunately we had to pay every pretzel we ate, apparently they rip off tourists like that everywhere in this city. Overall the food tasted nice but these two issues makes it only worth a 3-star review.

I really enjoyed my experience here. Great customer service and the food was delicious! I had the roasted duck and it was perfect. Interesting vibe here. I will definitely come back next time I'm in Munich.

I really, truly enjoyed by time at Zum Duernbraeu. I just sort of stumbled upon it in a hunger, having just flown in from the US. It really was a wise choice, and I highly recommend skipping past the mediocre Hofbrauhaus to come here. I ended up, as a solo person, at the long table with many strangers. My German is decent, and I enjoyed speaking with some of them. Many were beyond drunk, which to me is just a sign that the beer is good! I had a potato soup, which was good but unnecessary given the main dish I ordered - schweinshaxen. Yes, that typical Bavarian dish that is amazingly gigantic. I made it about halfway through before calling it quits. I wish...I wish I had been able to finish it. Oh so good. The beer came quick and was tasty. The service was surprisingly awesome. Would return no doubt!

Really disappointing food. The sauerbraten was tough, dry cardboard. The sauce put the "sour" in sauerbraten. The red cabbage (Rotkraut) was bitter and sour. I had to mix a packet on Splenda into it so I could eat some. The bread dumplings were like tennis balls. And all for 40 euro! Pricey. For a much better meal go to Spantenhaus.

Came in for dinner on our last night in Munich. The service was good and the food was okay. I really enjoyed the asparagus with hollandaise sauce. The potatoes that came with it were also pretty good. The pretzels were just okay though. My friend ordered these meat cake things (they looked like a crab cake). She said they tasted like a meatball and we're just okay. The German potato salad that came with it was good but I have had better. If you're looking for traditional Bavarian food in Munich I would recommend other places.

Excellent! I came here for the Pork Knuckle and Apfelstrudel and both did not disappoint. The service was quick and polite which made this place even better. I will definitely be back as the Wiener Scnhitzel looked very good.

This is one of my favourite places in Munich. Small and tucked-away, Zum Dürnbräu feels like you are escaping the rest of Munich. There is even quite a lot of space to sit outside, but normally I just sit inside. This time the service was a little gruff but efficient. Actually hat doesn't bother me - I find it quite amusing really. The food is quite pig-oriented so if you don't like pork the menu is not for you. That being said I had Käsespäzleso no pig. The beer however was very good. I'm usually not a great fan of Spaten beer, but this was very good.

Second time there in 2 years - spent a half hour hunting it down this time around, as I didn't remember the name nor the address. It was worth it! It's tucked away from the mainstream and has an authentic Bavarian flair. You better like meat! my friend and I loved it. It's definitely not subtle, but also not touristy. Try it.

A bit of a disappointment. Mentioned in a couple of tour guides as a good place, but was perhaps the least impressive meals on my trip. I got the duck; meat was NOT "fall of the bone" like I would expect, was a bit dry and boring flavor. Service was good. Will not return. :-(

Very good little "German" pub food. Pork Knuckle was very good, and more affordable than others. The other menu items looked just as good. Reservations recommend, but they have plenty of tables outside in the front, and a private area in the back. The waitress was very nice, and the food was quick, even though they had a full house inside. Wish I was told about the place years ago. Definitely will go back the next time in Munich.

Great place to get away from the crowds found in the typical touristy beer halls (aka Hofbrauhas). Food was great and staff were attentive. Would definitely go back.

Tried to find something off the beaten track and Durnbrau was recommended to us. But it s still a tourist spot with the typical german Food. Nothing special and we have had some better "Schweinshaxe" in other places. Waiters are a little bit stressed but still friendly.
