Great experience! Delicious local food and wines, we really enjoyed the experience. Plus, the service is amazing ❤️. Food, we had lots of dishes in two days, the beef soup with bacon and pork snitzel, delicious 😋. 100% recommended, super vibrant pub/restaurant, always busy with local people. Proper Austrian experience 👌 Many thanks to the entire staff, they always helped with translation and explained the food. Well done, 5*

Google
Wow! We found this restaurant on a stay near our hotel in Salzburg. The service is excellent, so welcoming. The food is spot on and very well cooked. We had steak, goulash, strudel and plenty of local Austrian wine and schnapps. Special mention to Alex who single handedly managed the smaller restaurant of the same name next door. Great knowledge and so friendly. We loved it so much we ate here for 3 nights. Reasonable price €110 average for 2 with wine.

If you’re looking for a wonderful, near-perfect Salzburg/Austrian dining experience, look no further than Gastwirtschaft Zum fidelen Affen! This cozy, neighborhood restaurant was right around the corner from our hotel. The interior is quintessential Austrian inn culture. While waiting for our table (reservations are recommended!), we enjoyed the surroundings and a tall, local beer. For a starter we shared Beef Tartare vom Premium Rind mit Chilicreme, Butter und Toast. For our main courses we dined on Pinzgauer Kasnocken and Das Wiener Schnitzel Aus Der Pfanne vom Kalb mit Petersilienkartoffeln (Bei uns immer mit Preiselbeeren!).

Google
Excellent Austrian food, great drinks, wonderful customer service and the place to sit for a great lunch while people watching in Salzburg! Highly recommend!

Google
Food was delicious and the service was fabulous. We were a tad early for our reservation but we were politely and warmly welcomed in to wait while they prepare our table. We were always attended to and they made sure all of our food was to our satisfaction. Absolutely enjoyed our dining experience here. Would come again.

We had a fantastic time at this very nice restaurant. Service was friendly, helpful with smiles and best possible care for guests. The food was generous and delicious, a place to go without hesitation.

Google
Very nice and friendly service. We got a table without a reservation. The food and dessert are delicious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Google
Hearty portions, very tasty dishes and good service (hilarious but attentive waiter). We managed to secure a place even though the place was crowded, if we were willing to share a table

Yelp
Let's start at the very beginning, a good place to start -- Maria, The Sound of Music Our first meal after flying in to Salzburg. We had walked for a couple of hours getting our bearings, looked into a few places, and this restaurant had the best outdoor ambiance plus it was a block off the main drag and had more locals than tourists. The locals were right! Outstanding Austrian cuisine! We had dumpling soup, roasted pork and beef goulash ending with apple strudel. All of it was excellent, washed down with a liter of Gruner. Service was friendly and English speaking. Excellent place to start in Salzburg! Highly recommended!

Yelp
We ate here our first night in Salzburg. We all had the schnitzel. The breading was light and the potato "salad" was delicious. In the states, potato salad is usually cold and mayonnaise-y. But this potato salad was warm and slightly buttery with the perfect amount of parsley. The cranberry was obviously fresh, it had small bits of fruit in it and waWe shared the apple strudel and it was warm, flakey and the vanilla sauce was delicious. When we first arrived we were told that the wait would be 30 minutes (they must have told the other three groups in front of us the same thing, as they all left), we said we'd wait. The hostess/server escorted us to a tall top table where we could wait and order drinks. She took our order, brought our drinks, then five minutes later took us to our table. The staff were all warm and kind. The ambiance was fantastic, we sat outside near the small fountain (I'm not sure there is indoor seating). They did not come around after they delivered our meals, but everything tasted good so it's wasn't a big deal. If we ever visit Salzburg again, we will definitely be back to Zum Fidelen Affen.

Yelp
Fast service (especially late at night) and scrumptious food. We had the goulash and the pork schnitzel and both were delicious. Beer and wine menu is pretty good and extensive. The waitress was extremely friendly to our kids which is always a plus for me. It's a bit loud but it's so small. And popular it isn't surprising. The menu seemed a lot more abbreviated than I expected but that could be a holiday factor (we at there between Christmas and New Years). A warm, cozy wooden paneled Austrian restaurant. Highly recommended.

Paige H.

Yelp
Delicious goulash with knodel was really good. Shared between two people. Wait staff very nice

Sue C.

Yelp
The food, Wiener schnitzel, was delicious, the service very efficient and the local crowd was friendly.

Yelp
Zum fidelen Affen was where we had our first meal in Salzburg. The main reason was that it was the only place that was open on a Sunday night that did not require a reservation. I think we got lucky because the restaurant was pretty packed and got busier throughout the evening. Reservations are highly recommended everywhere in Salzburg I would say. Our waiter was great and so was the food. The only reason I cannot give it a 5/5 is because we definitely had tastier meals in Salzburg, but overall it was great and I would recommend it to anyone passing through the city.

Walter S.

Yelp
The food was amazing, schnitzel and the Chantrel mushroom risotto was amazing. Great service. Nice atmosphere. .

Marian M.

Yelp
We had dinner in this cute place. The ladies were super attentive and friendly and we waited for 5/10 minutes because we did not have reservations. We had the traditional beef soup as a starter. And we ordered the classic pork steak and the prime beef sirloin with mashed potatoes. Food was good too but not as good as the service.

GT W.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner without reservations and managed to snag a table. (Reservations highly recommended.) The food was good, though I thought the braised beef in the goulash was too dry. Their beer selection was not what it was hyped up to be sadly. We did have great service, however, and the ambiance is excellent.

Germaynne G.

Yelp
First place since the start of our Europe trip. Pork Schnitzel with german potatoes are to die for with a beer on a warm day in Salzburg. We enjoyed the ambience, friendly staff and good service

Yina M.

Yelp
Great experience at the restaurant. Tips for future guests: if you want to have an indoor seating by yourself, make a reservation, otherwise, either outdoor seating by yourselves or communal table inside, which is quite fun! We had beef broth with bacon ball, smoked trout with horseradish, fried chicken salad and gullash. Fantastic!! Highly recommend all of the above!

Austin D.

Yelp
Showed up for an early dinner and they made accommodations for us with no reservation. Great service, spoke great English and taught us some German words! I ordered the Goulash which was super tender. The beef was perfectly cooked and the bread ball was a perfect compliment to it.

Samantha G.

Yelp
Excellent place! They are so nice and friendly to tourists! We got the beef goulash and kasespatzle. Both were amazing. We also got wine and the apple strudel for dessert. All this was awesome and our bill was under $40. I would highly recommend coming here. If you come after 6:30 I would make a reservation.

Julia G.

Yelp
Great food and friendly service! We stopped by for an early dinner and were able to sit at a table right away. Our server could speak/understood English well and she was extremely courteous and sweet. My veal schnitzel was well-cooked and came with deliciously seasoned potatoes. My husband's goulash was tender and juicy. They had a $4/glass house wine happy hour while we were there which was awesome! Definitely recommend coming here if you are an English-speaking tourist. You'll have a great time!

Christian R.

Yelp
Great and friendly staff, fresh food, cozy atmosphere. What else would you need after a day in the City of Mozart

Julie B.

Yelp
Wowwww! Absolutely delicious! I had the mixed salad, and it was one of the best salads I've ever had in my life, and I don't know why. Then I had the salmon trout, and that was cooked perfectly. The flavor of the bulgar was so tasty! I would highly recommend this restaurant!

Benjamin G.

Yelp
At the time of this writing, Zum fidelen Affen has a 4.5-star rating across 114 reviews and I have to say it deserves every bit of that high score. Guys, the crispy roast pork. I think it was a weekly special, so I can't guarantee it'll be there if you go, but if it is, order it. It's so tender, served in its own liquified fat and jus, with a hint of garlic and, in the Bavarian style, not too many herbs. I am not a huge Bavarian pork fan but I felt like Elaine Benes eating that first spoonful of soup--it buckled the knee. It was phenomenal. My wife had the goulash, which was also reportedly excellent. (I didn't try it because I have a thing about braised beef.) I didn't think it would be possible for me to love anything more than the pork, but then they brought us "Die Mozartkuchen," which is sort of their take on the famous Salzburg candy, the Mozartkugel. It is a ball of rich chocolate mousse with marzipan creme drizzled around the outside. Instant top-five dessert in my book. Now I'm mad at every chocolate mousse I've ever had for not being drizzled with delicious marzipan. Every spoonful brought the realization that I'm going to have leave this place and my next dessert won't be this one. It's hard to save room for dessert when eating Bavarian food, but do yourself a favor and try it this time. 10/10. If you're looking for top shelf Bavarian food, this is the place.

Yelp
Probably the best food ever!!! But not for me. We walked in at 1:20 Manager/owner said they were closed. We were upset so he managed give us a corner place indoors with two options to pick. It was quite strange so we left. We went to Gabler Brau next door and got seated right away. Funny enough we see people come in and get seated. That's F...up!!!! They owe us an apology.

Holly F.

Yelp
Recently my family and I visited Salzburg and before our trip, I consulted with Yelp to see what might be good. Found this place, "the merry monkey". Excellent excellent authentic Austrian dining. The ambience is beautiful and cozy. They have both outdoor and indoor dining which we chose the indoor. My brother and I started with the steak tartare and we followed that with the goulash. Both delicious. My mother had the mushroom knodel it was the evening special. My SIL had the salmon. We ended with the dessert platter which other yelpers recommended, definitely a must. Definitely checkout this restaurant if you're heading to Salzburg!

Hollie L.

Yelp
We loved experience here. They have authentic Austrian food and what you would imagine an Austrian dining experience to feel like. Service was great and the food was soooo good. Favorite dinner in Austria.

Diana Y.

Yelp
Great out door cafe. They do have indoor seating, but it's just more fun to sit in the busy corridor to people watch. This is one of the few restaurants in the area that will require waiting to be seated! It's busy and people are roaming around so do NOT just sit down without the waitress knowing. They had two waitresses doing everything for 30+ tables and hosting, so have patience. The food was really good and reasonable in price. Potato soup with bacon crumbles was the best! Roasted chicken and steak were good too. The pretzel is probably store bought and can be skipped.

Yelp
Zum fedelin affen aka The Jolly Monkey Tavern has been serving locals and tourists for 40 years now. They use seasonal products, regional and specially selected ingredients. We didn't make reservations so had to wait awhile. I highly recommend making reservations. We sat outside and there were blankets since it was April at that time, it was a bit chilly. We had some great Austrian wines and for food, we ordered ~ Beef Tartare with chilli creme, butter and toast. Saltzburger Bierhendl : classic Austrian corn-fed chicken braised in dark beer  with steamed rice and vegetables. Gulasch vom rind : traditional beef goulash with white bread dumpling. Service was slow but I learned in Europe, that's normally the case. Such a cozy traditional Austrian restaurant and the food was simply delicious!

Mary Beth K.

Yelp
We ate here late last night. The owners were very accommodating for our party of 6. The food here is delicious! The Duck special was to die for! Beef tartare was our starter and we loved it. Overall, great time was had by all!

Mich D.

Yelp
As a visitor we were taken aback when we tried to have dinner at the restaurant and told there were no openings? We were quickly shown over to the restaurant next door that they owned also. We asked if he menu was the same and told no. Asked if we could wait for a table at this place and told we could but could wait an hr or more. We choice to wait and it was only 15 minutes before we were sat. Potato soup was delicious, pork and veal schnitzel were very good. Deserts were all wonderful. Explained later by our very kind waitstaff they only seat once a night expecting people will stay for a very long time. Very different concept then in north America. Overall food was excellent and we would return again

Sam J.

Yelp
Great food and great friendly service!! Have the shareable dessert- a little bit of everything and it's all amazing!! Highly recommend

Jannean D.

Yelp
Romantic, delicious, well-priced! What else can you ask for?? We came for dinner on a Thursday and it was populated, but not crowded. We sat outside under a massive umbrella. It was lovely! The goulash is fantastic. Yes, I said fantastic! I don't have any other goulash to compare it to, but this was amazing!! My husband had a pork dish that was so good! Fried green tomato, pork, zucchini and prosciutto. For dessert we had their daily mousse, almond chocolate mousse. I wanted to devour a bowl of this all by myself!! Sadly, I had to share! The house wine goes down smoothly. So smoothly I ordered a second glass! Eat here. You won't be disappointed!!!

Joelle K.

Yelp
Amazing dining experience! We ate here on our first night in Salzburg and were blown away. Everything we had on the menu was phenomenal, and the outdoor seating area provided a great evening atmosphere. The waiter was warm, and welcoming, and had us laughing the whole time. We are so glad we found this spot!

Abdullah A.

Yelp
Very good food Nice place to set outside We enjoyed the Goulash and the chicken dishes

Brittany B.

Yelp
So delicious! It took us awhile to find this place (tucked up in a street at the top of the street water fountain) but it was worth it! The patio was full so we had to sit inside which was HOT in summer. If you want to sit outside, I would recommend a reservation. I eat paleo and have to be fairly strict about it for health reasons. This place was able to make me a fully paleo meal (slightly modified boiled beef dish) and it was fantastic! Those who have to eat gluten free and/or dairy free will appreciate this place. The server was very friendly and accommodating. They will let you sit there as long as you want, as will most places in Europe so let them know of you're in a hurry and don't be shy about asking for the check when you're done if you are wanting to leave.

Patty K.

Yelp
Loved this place! Great atmosphere and good food. We got the seasonal pumpkin ravioli which was delicious and the harvest trumer beer. Would def recommend!

Angela H.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the overall visit here. The location was off the beaten path of the touristy food and attractions but within walking distance. The menu had quite a handful of options, they offer small and large portions and the price is a great value. Indoors the location is tiny but there is outdoor seating as well. I really liked the indoor pub setting, it was a great chill spot but in peak hours could be an issue for immediate seating. What is convenient is that there other places to eat next door. A pretzel croissant and regular pretzel was complimentarily served table side. I had a small steak with bacon, mushroom, cheese and a potato hash with a side salad. My entree was great, delish! What I liked the most was the combination of it all those ingredients in one bite. I suppose its something I wouldn't normally see on a menu in the US, but I liked it. The side salad was fresh and dressing was light. We had two beers, mine was the wheat beer with sprite. Service was friendly and offered English menus but the food order was slow.

Sara M.

Yelp
Highly recommend the tagliatella! That's what I ordered, and had no regrets whatsoever. Hubs ordered the das wiener schnitzel aus der pfanne w/ veal, and couldn't have been happier! We had reservations that we submitted via email prior to our visit, which is a good idea in my opinion. We visited on a Wednesday and it was pretty packed. After we ate there, I understood why.

Robert L.

Yelp
Wife and I had dinner here in our day trip to Salzburg after reading great reviews. We had the pumpkin soup and beef soup to start. Wife ordered the schnitzel while I had the chicken. The food was delicious and lived up to expectations. We left happily full and ready to head back to Vienna. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

Mina K.

Yelp
Not a big place. You can be in a quiet corner or next to the bar. Great hostess and friendly wait staff. Loved the goulash -that gravy!- and weiner schnitzel. We were lucky to get a shared table for two on a Friday at 6:15.

Joelle M.

Yelp
Great restaurant! Loved our evening there. Between us, my husband ordered the potato soup, beef soup with bacon ball, grilled chicken with veggies, and weaver schnitzel. All very good. Particularly recommend the potato soup. Dessert was apple strudel- very light and tasty.

Ally M.

Yelp
A great find! Zum fidelen Affen seemed to be a cool, mostly locals place. It has a great structure, but is hidden just off one of the main streets in the city. The staff was very friendly, but we did have a 30 minute wait because the tables were full. Many people it seems come to eat here and just hang out for a while chatting with their friends. That is a great atmosphere I think, but it makes getting a table more difficult. The Weisse Dunkel is a really lovely beer and my group enjoyed it more so than the Weisse Hell. I ate a really great pork Wienerschnitzel with a traditional boiled potatoes and cranberry sauce.

Dale K.

Yelp
Awesome food and location! I definitely recommend this as some of the best food In Salzburg.

Laura L.

Yelp
If you want to eat inside then get a reservation. Otherwise, get there for dinner outside at senior citizen time. It's cool. Don't worry. The ravioli and the lemon cake were - literally - the best I've had globally. Potato soup- yummy. Steak - yummy. But the warm lemon cake....deserves global recognition. Better than the strudel.

Liesl S.

Yelp
The food was excellent, the location idyllic, and the dessert heavenly. Everything we ordered was prepared perfectly, with fresh ingredients, excellent seasoning, and lovely presentation. The service was warmer than elsewhere in Salzburg, though not 'attentive' by US standards. The dessert has a tasting. You get a small bite of EACH of the desserts they offer. Just do it. Order it at the beginning, You will thank me later. This meal was half the price of Blaue Gans and equal in quality.

Todd P.

Yelp
"The Jolly Monkey" was a highlight of our trip to Austria as the space is small and intimate (call to feeling, the service helpful and attentive and of course the food is a deliciously lighter take on traditional Austrian cuisine.

Carl J.

Yelp
Nice restaurant serving Austrian food, yes including a very tasty traditional veal Wiener Schnitzel. Decent prices and very good service. You can sit outside on the street if the weather permits. Recommended!

Kirsten M.

Yelp
This place was bomb.com. We had a little bit of a wait but it wasn't a big deal because they have these stand up bars where you can wait with a drink. They put us in a communal table which was great because the couple we sat with were really cool. The food: excellent!!! I had the classic chicken dish while my sister had the weiner schnitzel. Even the mixed salad was fantastic. If you want an authentic place with a lively feel and great service, come to this place!

Joseph B.

Yelp
#1: Have reservations! You can do it by email as we did. Zum fidelen Affen was on our list of "must eat" restaurants as we traveled across Austria & Germany. I had the RICOTTA-SCHNITTLAUCH TASCHERL which is raviolis filled with ricotta and chives, served with brown butter, Austrian cheese and oven tomato. Superb! The other entrée was the LACHSFORELLENFILET. It was a salmon fillet with red lentils and mashed sweet potatoes. It was a very large portion that was simply delicious. We also ordered bread rolls which were excellent as well. I finished with a traditional APFELSTRUDEL dessert with a slight Zum fidelen Affen twist.... Outstanding! The other dessert ordered was a ZITRONENKÜCHLEIN IM GLAS which was a lemon cake served in a clear baking glass with yoghurt ice cream. The lemon cake was warm and when eaten with the yogurt was a delicious blend of flavors. The service was impeccable and our waiter extremely engaging and funny. The outside tables are very picturesque and it's a great place to people watch.

Timo L.

Yelp
Loved the food and ambiance! We had soup, "Affen-Schnitzel" and Goulash. All three dishes were delicious!

Brynn B.

Yelp
Excellent service and delicious food in a quaint, friendly environment. Definitely worth the visit as a tourist or as a local favorite. The beef soup with bacon dumplings are delicious. The pretzels are fresh and slightly chewy and tasty. The veal schnitzel is fantastic; squeeze on the lemon and add a little cranberry sauce and it's perfect.

Tom V.

Yelp
Found this wonderful restaurant on Yelp. Had a great dinner with our whole family. The service was very friendly and excellent. Ask for Christian aka Cheese and Nina and let them know that you read about them on Yelp by the family from San Francisco. They will take great care of you! The food is authentic and delicious. Located near Mirabelle Gardens.

Anna B.

Yelp
Eating at this restaurant you feel more like a local than a tourist. Great food and service. Highly recommend it.

Ashley D.

Yelp
We had a great experience enjoying traditional Austrian cuisine for dinner and lots of good beer. The staff is very friendly and attentive. We enjoyed every dish we ordered especially the wiener schnitzel and the amazing lavender goat cheese salad!

James G.

Yelp
This was an amazing restaurant with a very solid menu. The food presentation was elegant and the quality was top notch. Very tasty! Highly recommend you try this spot. Michael, the owner, is very accommodating.
