At the time of this writing, Zum fidelen Affen has a 4.5-star rating across 114 reviews and I have to say it deserves every bit of that high score.
Guys, the crispy roast pork. I think it was a weekly special, so I can't guarantee it'll be there if you go, but if it is, order it. It's so tender, served in its own liquified fat and jus, with a hint of garlic and, in the Bavarian style, not too many herbs. I am not a huge Bavarian pork fan but I felt like Elaine Benes eating that first spoonful of soup--it buckled the knee. It was phenomenal.
My wife had the goulash, which was also reportedly excellent. (I didn't try it because I have a thing about braised beef.)
I didn't think it would be possible for me to love anything more than the pork, but then they brought us "Die Mozartkuchen," which is sort of their take on the famous Salzburg candy, the Mozartkugel. It is a ball of rich chocolate mousse with marzipan creme drizzled around the outside. Instant top-five dessert in my book. Now I'm mad at every chocolate mousse I've ever had for not being drizzled with delicious marzipan. Every spoonful brought the realization that I'm going to have leave this place and my next dessert won't be this one. It's hard to save room for dessert when eating Bavarian food, but do yourself a favor and try it this time.
10/10. If you're looking for top shelf Bavarian food, this is the place.
