When we arrived in Zurich, this was the first restaurant we went to... because we were staying in the guesthouse above.
The guesthouse: we stayed in the guesthouse for 6 nights in July 2011. This guest house has 10 rooms on two floors above the cafe and is an inexpensive option for staying close to the center of Zurich. You check-in and -out at the bar, so you need to arrive during restaurant hours. The bathroom is shared with four other rooms on the floor, and the rooms, toilet, and shower room are all very clean. Our room (Room 10) had a double bed, two chairs, night stands, lights, shelves, water glasses, and towels - no TV or radio. The wireless internet that is available never worked for us when we were in the room - it only seemed to work if you were actually in the restaurant, and even then it was pretty flaky. The beds were moderately comfortable - typical Ikea-like mattress that you can't sleep too long on or your back starts to hurt. Overall, a decent place if you aren't looking for any frills.
Okay, onto the restaurant! They sell savory and sweet Pfannkuchen (thin pancakes) and waffles with ice cream, which was honestly the main selling point of staying in the above guesthouse (other than the price). There is usually another special of the day that's not flat-breakfast-treat-related. You order and pay for food and drinks at the bar, but they bring the food to the table. Food has always been delicious - I mean, who doesn't like waffles?
The cafe is pretty cozy (read: small) and can get crowded as it's very popular, especially on weekends. One thing that has changed since we first went is that they have divided the back room, and added a glassed smoking room to the front half of that room. While I'm sure some people love it (actually - does anyone love an enclosed smoking room?), it's taken away seating and also made the non-smoking part next to it smell like smoke. Not a positive step in my book, but maybe it's extra-appreciated in the winter for smokers.
Bathroom: downstairs from the cafe. serviceable. don't get lost. 3 stars.
