Dined at Zum Kropf on our last day in Zurich and it was a good choice! Nice restaurant for its rustic historic feels, and good dishes. We had the veal escalope, boiled beef with clear broth and chocolate mousse. The boiled beef was an interesting dish for me, tastes so hearty! Chocolate mousse was airy, perfect sweet ending. Price? Worth it for the last evening in Zurich

The food was delicious and the interior was beautiful! The price point was also fair considering its location and quality. Definitely would recommend. We ordered the calf tongue and rostbratwurst. The calf tongue was tender and very flavorful, and the sausages were very delicious as well. The side of potatoes with the sausage was also a great supplement to the meat. We had a great meal and would for sure come back in the future!

Traditional Swiss foods, as they told us, are really good! We tried lamb, pork sausages, and chicken breast, which are all good! Prices are acceptable.

We loved it here! Great food and service! Very beautiful historic atmosphere. The painted ceiling was amazing 👏

Quietly Rated

Google
For proper Swiss food in Zürich, this is the place to go Zum Kropf delivered exactly what we hoped for – authentic Swiss classics in a cosy, traditional setting. The Zürcher Geschnetzeltes was excellent – rich, creamy, and full of flavour. Service was friendly and surprisingly fast considering how packed the place was. The interior has a classic charm, almost like a grand beer hall but more elegant. If you’re looking to try proper local dishes in a setting that feels like a slice of Swiss history, this is a solid pick. Quietly rated: worth stopping (especially if you’re hungry for tradition).

A typical Swiss restaurant in the middle of Zurich with cozy and beautiful interiors. The food is absolutely delicious, especially the seasonal items, and well presented. The staff is nice and available, although waiting time could be a bit long due to the numerous tables the restaurant has. Prices are as high as you can expect in Zurich, but the quality of the food and the beauty of the room make up for a lot of it.

Yelp
Great place for a birthday dinner! My friends and I stopped in with a reservation and the birthday girl asked to get moved into the more mesmerizing section of the restaurant (our original table was right in the front) and that was obliged. Reservations are a must for sure. Our server was personable, cracking jokes and giving great recommendations. We all got wines from aperol spritzes to sweeter white wines. They were great! For my main course, I opted for the pork knuckle with sauerkraut and potatoes. Per the waiters recommendation, I tried the mustard that came with it. Definitely heed the warning that you'll feel the mustard's heat in your nose! Overall, a great option for dinner in Zürich. While a bit more upscale, the prices aren't too bad. Great food and vibes!

Yelp
If you're planning to dine at Zum Kropf in Zurich, keep in mind that the most visually striking section, the one with historic, cathedral-like restored art, likely requires reservations in advance. If you walk in without one, like we did, you'll probably be seated in the front or back rooms, which are much more plain in terms of ambiance. The food is lovely, delicious, and well-prepared. The service, however, felt a bit cold. There were no smiles, no check-ins, and everything felt a little rushed. It gave off a bit of a "you should be grateful to be dining here" vibe, even if that wasn't explicitly said. We get it, it's a fancy spot, but a little warmth would go a long way.

Yelp
So we were enjoying our last night in Zurich and decided we needed one final proper meal that gave homage to the local cuisine. The hotel we were staying at recommended this spot and we were able to grab a reservation here (probably recommended as the place did get quite busy). The joint itself is located right near the main street and behind the Hermes shop and down the alley way. We made our way for our 18:00 reservation and were seated promptly for dinner service. The service was very efficient and courteous with good light humor also in the process. After a quick perusal of the menu, we decided to order a bottle of vino for the table and went with the schnitzel, the rosa tschudi style which was the braised beef, and a seasonal salad (basically a cobb salad). The vino was priced reasonably and very tasty. The salad was simple, and good quality ingredients. A bit safe and boring but still good. The schnitzel was breaded quite well and the flavors were good as well. The braised beef with the noodles was also tasty and very tender. I saw a few pieces order wursts also which looked great and everyone seemed pleased. All in all, this is a great spot for dinner and the service was great along with the food. Definitely enjoyed this as our final meal and glad we were able to enjoy this prior to leaving Zurich.

Yelp
Zurich, CH. 11/3/22. Dinner with wife. Walked by ZK on way to hotel and it looked interesting. I asked the hotel to make a dinner reservation. Unfortunately they were booked between 7&9PM, as were all the other Swiss Cuisine restaurants within walking distance. Hotel said to go over anyway, they know your name and a table might be available. At 7:30 we walked over and sure enough they did have a table. The hostess was very pleasant and very accommodating. The place is deceiving from the out side. There is a small anteroom with several tables. It opens up to a bar and open kitchen area and a large dining room with vaulted ceilings with museum like painted scenes. Quite pretty. There's another dinning room behind this one. We had dark beers, very good. We had a mixed green salad with an Italian vinaigrette. The greens, crisp and fresh and the dressing light and tasty. Also had an Augustine's K'Salat...a red pork sausage with German potato salad...both very good. The potato salad is genuine and not what you get in the States. We had Frischling Entrecôte ... wild boar medallions with cabbage salad and a side of spatzle noodles. Terrific. We were very full so no desert, just espressos. On 11/4 we returned with two friends. ZK was willing to hold a table for us despite being booked up. We made a good impression the night before. We couldn't get a reservation any place else. We had mixed green salads with Italian Vinaigrette, cabbage salads - authentic German cabbage - terrific. We had the wild boar, venison medallion and two versions of the sausage K'Salat. Too full...no desert. Highly recommend ZK for authentic Swiss cuisine.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. My wife, my baby daughter and I got to the restaurant 2 minutes after it open for the day on a Tuesday (17/5/22), we wanted to have lunch in the terrace, but the waiter said we couldn't because of the stroller, so I told him that it folds and that wouldn't be a problem. However, he then asked us if we had a reservation, we said no, then he pretended to call the chef on the phone and ask him if there was a spot in the terrace, (fake) chef said the terrace was full, so I asked "full of what" (I knew what was happening) but the waiter cowardly turn around and left. Completely childish and unprofessional behavior from this cl0wn. Unacceptable attitude and terribly acting (I mean, at least pretend the phone is ringing and that the chef is busy because the restaurant just open). This is not a family friendly restaurant and I would recommend every parent to steer away from this place.

Yelp
My husband and I received a recommendation for this restaurant on the night of our arrival in Zurich and were beyond pleased. We were able to enjoy the evening on their terrace with not only exceptional food but equally exceptional service. Marisa took care of our table and was simply a joy; making our time there comfortable with pleasant conversation as if we were regular customers. We highly recommend this restaurant and will surely visit again on our next trip to Zurich.

Yelp
I was meeting friends here for dinner. Coming from the other side of the city. The Uber driver said this is as close as I can get you you will have to walk the rest of the way. What? I have never been here before. Disembark in a parking lot and begin to walk through a charming warren of little alleys that have been redone as shops and restaurants. Finally arriving at the restaurant I sit down to one of the most authentic German / Swiss meals in the city. The service is very food and the food is phenominal. Good sized portions. The rosti with veal was very good. Of course the prices are high it is Switzerland. Everything is expensive. I will come back

Yelp
I ended up at this place because Zeughauskeller across this place was completely packed. :-) However, I returned to this place again, as my experience at this place and the food was really good. Tip - Try their bread while you enjoy some Erdinger - very fresh bread. I tried their veal and mushrooms in a creamy sauce with rösti. It was very nice and also the seasonal vermicelli dessert made with chestnut. During my next trip, I tried their Bavarian sausages with rösti (again, yes, because its hard to resist).

Yelp
I'm so stoked to have found a good Swiss all-rounder to cater to my every dinner desire. Restaurant zum Kropf, a.k.a. Bierhalle Kropf, has it all - a skillful mix of reminiscent surroundings, conscientious service and an enticing menu! The nom de guerre 'Bierhalle Kropf' emanates from its earlier personality. There's actually quite some history to these walls. According to the owners, it was originally built in 1444 as a residence and subsequently housed numerous well-to-dos and promis including the mayor of Zürich. Only in 1888 was the ground floor turned into a restaurant and Bavarian-style beer hall. Since then, ownership has changed hands but not much else. In fact, the murals and ornamental wood and marble are mostly original. Unfortunately, I wouldn't call it a beer hall any longer. They only offer 3 beers, all run of the mill. The food, fortunately, is anything but. And the choices are expansive! The menu is mostly Swiss traditional but touches of Kropf's Bavarian roots are still evident with goodies like schweinshaxe, weisswürstel and leberknödelsuppe. The veal wienerschnitzel is known for being one of the best in town and I would agree, served with choice of fries, potato salad or mixed salad. The pumpkin cream soup was downright decent. The ingenuously named 'shrimp cocktail' was delicious, but to my pleasant surprise it wasn't shrimp. I quickly identified these wee invertebrates as crawfish and confirmed with the waitress. She corroborated, didn't explain and I didn't ask. I consider it an upgrade! The Assiette "choucroute garnie", braised beef, smoked pork loin, pork sausage and a thick cut of speck with sauerkraut and steamed potatoes is the 'anytime' metzgete, for truck driver appetites. But it's just as much quality as quantity. It's all perfectly prepared and juicy moist. Because of this dish, I can't "expand" on their dessert offering. Prices are fair, comparable to or slightly above Zeughauskeller. Speaking of Zeughauskeller; their food and service is inferior to Kropf's but their beer selection kicks Kropf's arsch.

Yelp
I'm a pretty discerning eater so when the guide book led us to the restaurant across the street with its menus translated into 6 languages I refused to go there. I turned around to find a menu that was authentic Bavarian and Swiss which was what this visitor needed. The prices were a little bit less than some of the other restaurants in the area. Vaulted ceilings and painted walls really give the ambiance of the old style, and reading the other review proves that there is much history here. The service was good. She didn't speak English but knew enough to give us Te English menu and had very good gesturing skills. We got the Calves liver and Pork knuckle. I asked for Roesti instead of noodles because hey, I'm in Switzerland and need to eat the famous potatoes in its rightful place. Calves liver was excellent but covered in the same sauce as my Pork knuckle which was a little dry. The drink selection wasn't amazing. Just a light or a dark beer and a long wine list. The Cabernet I got was mediocre. We decided to skip dessert and get chocolate down the street. I really enjoyed the meal and happy we found the place !

Yelp
Best restaurant in Zurich! Hundreds of years old and excellent at making traditional Swiss dishes, like Rosti (with veal in a white wine sauce). I travel to Zurich quite a bit for business and always look forward to visiting this restaurant. I have come to Kropf so much over the last few years, that they know me by name and give me the same table in the main dining hall with the murals on the ceiling. Can't beat the customer service. You get to have a wonderful dinner while looking at famed artwork!

Yelp
Lovely restaurant with beautiful interior and good service. I had the vitello tonnato for starters (on seasonal specials menu) which was excellent, and the selection of meats with saurkraut for mains which was ok. My partner had the Cordon Bleu which was superb. We shared a dessert of apple fritters, which was also scrummy. This is a good restaurant if you're in Zurich and fancy some local cuisine.

Yelp
Kind of sad. Had the Wiener schnitzel, which I was pretty excited about, but was quite disappointed by. Came as a single filet with a side of French fries for 38CHF. I've had better schnitzel at food stalls. The breading was poorly bound, and separated easily. The meat was low quality and gristly, the fries were what you'd expect from Burger King... sad.

Yelp
I ordered the Zurich special which I recommend and my partner ordered the sausage platter which was okay. I give the food four stars. Nothing exciting about it but the meals where quite good and portions were large. I have to give 1 star for service. We spent over thirty minutes paying for our meal and we had to get up from our table to chase down the waiter to pay. Also the waiter didn't pay attention to small details. When he poured my coke in my glass he was so careless some of it splashed out of he glass and onto the table. Also when I ordered coffee with my meal he repeated it as if he was shocked I would order coffee with the main course. I felt like I did something wrong. Anyways it was a really bad experience and left frustrated after paying almost 100 USD for lunch.

Yelp
Our tour guide recommended this restaurant to us for an "authentic" Swiss meal. We really wanted to try to veal, mushroom, and hashbrown dish. I did not disappoint! Of course, the cost is around 30-40 francs for a meal. Since my friend and I are on a budget, we split a portion and had more than enough. We were lucky to squeeze in without a reservation since we are only 2 people. However, I recommend making a reservation! Definitely a great meal!

Yelp
We stared out at this restaurant wondering if anyone was around or if they were open for business. It was around 6:00 pm. One of the locals came in, searched around and manage to get the business going. Sweet old lady and very friendly. I ordered the boiled beef with potatoes and could not find one thing wrong with this meal! Very good, tender and almost home style cooking. My husband had the cold plate of salami, ham and cheese. It was a typical German dish and very good.

Yelp
solid, swiss cooking. bürgerlich. fantastic setting, come here instead of the more obvious zeughauskeller next door. if possible, ask to be seated in the centre room. unique for zurich, always worth a return visit.
