Delicious latte every time! They just added a tiramisu syrup which is amazing. Genevieve is always so friendly and helpful too! 10/10

Stopped by to grab a coffee over the weekend. The hot coffee was good so I decided to buy a lb to bring home. The girl working behind the counter was unfriendly and turns out didn't even give me the lb. of coffee I paid for. I didn't watch her weighing out the coffee since I would hope that they would he honest. I did notice she didn't add or remove any beans after weighing so I assumed it was maybe a bit heavier or lighter than a 1lb. I got home and weighed it and turns out the coffee with the bag weighed .9lbs. To add to the sting the coffee didn't taste like the one at the shop (it was the same roast and type) it was definitely burnt like other reviewers have said. If you go here and buy beans make sure you watch them because it turns out they will shortchange you on the beans.

Google
Best coffee I have had in the Southern CT area. The cinnamon hazelnut was AMAZING and my friend couldn't stop raving about the Carmel nut. They have limited selections to drink in store (wish there were a few more options) but had what seemed like millions of bean flavors to take home. Will definitely be back :)

Google
This is a classic coffee house roastery and bantering hub. A welcoming spot for neighbors, visitors and friends. For caffeine and carbeurators. babies and dogs, town workers and private equity teams,

Bonnie

Google
We were looking for a cafe, glad to find this local small one. Happy to support small business owners. They have coffee beans on site, do their own coffee. Seating is limited.

Google
My wife and I try to frequent this shop whenever we are near or passing through New Canaan . Friendly informative staff. They roast and sell coffee beans on site. The Matcha Latte, new offering, is a highly recommend. We just got back from Japan and their rendition is on par with the best we tasted.

Charles A.

Google
Great shop and what an amazing community supporter. They sponsor the yearly Caffeine and Carburetors car event in front of their shop. Over the years it has grown to a major event taking up all of downtown. Pictures are 2017

Yelp
This place roasts their own coffee and it's delicious!!! Many coffee choices!!! Seating inside and outside. Efficient & friendly staff.

Yelp
My partner and I stopped by during a Caffeine and Carburetors event and were served in fun, themed cups for the occasion, which was a nice touch. The line was super long, which we expected given the crowd, and the ceiling packed with college flags definitely adds character. That said, if you look closely, the flags are very dusty--it honestly made me think about stepping out of line. I decided to stick it out. My partner grabbed an iced coffee from the "fast lane" set up for the event, and I ordered a matcha latte. Unfortunately, mine was watered down and lacking any real flavor. The payment process was quick and the service was efficient, but overall the drinks were just okay.
google avatar

Zella W.

Yelp
Charging very premium prices for coffee that's stored with exposure to light and air-- I wouldn't be surprised if most of it is stale. The drinks were a bit watery and the espresso was a bit thin. Drinkable but definitely not worth the price
google avatar

Yelp
Great local roaster. An array of different beans available too. I was hoping to work while I enjoyed my oat milk latte but unfortunately they don't have wifi. I went hungry but there were only muffins & packaged scones. (There's a deli next door & a food court (pizza, salads...). It's definitely a spot where regulars frequent which speaks volumes about it being a staple in the community. Friendly service as well. They do offer some outdoor seating too which is nice. I definitely will go back!
google avatar

Brian L.

Yelp
These guys are very serious about coffee and it shows. Tina of different varieties to buy and take home. They roast on site. Have a simple iced latte and it was very smooth and flavorful.

Yelp
Now that I work in NC, my boss introduced me to this gem in town and now I'm addicted. Apparently the drink I order has a special name - the "Diva" latte - skim milk, extra shot and extra pump of vanilla iced. Everyone who works here is lovely and the roasting smells when you walk in are enough sometimes to give me that extra nudge in the morning and focus. Also love that they carry these straws made from avocado pits so I bought myself a box on Amazon for personal use. As soon as I buy those refillable Keurig cups I'm going to grab some their specialty beans - it's really a welcoming place and always fun to either chat with others, people watch or catch up on some paperwork. I love bringing newbies to this spot and sharing in my addiction. Thanks Zumbach's peeps for getting me through every single work day!

Yelp
Just walking in and smelling the coffee. You will be a changed person! A neighborhood favorite this is so conveniently located next to the train station that it gets a good amount of traffic. The place is predominantly coffee and talk about variety, it is variety galore. I have visited it a few times during this Covid era so have not sat inside, but they do have a bunch of chairs for you to sit outside. Enjoy the whistle of the passing train, the sound of a dance or Karate class that suddenly erupts, or just enjoying the New Canaan setting. If you are a coffee person, you will enjoy.

Yelp
I've been wanting to visit Zumbach's for so long and finally had the chance to stop in recently. This is a great spot not too far from all the New Canaan shops. I loved the warm and cozy vibes in the shop, and the caramel latte I ordered was delicious. They have so many different types of beans for sale as well, so you can pick some up to have at home. They are cash only, so make sure to have cash on hand if you stop by!

Ed K.

Yelp
Great coffee. Great service. Great atmosphere. Sensible prices. Ample parking. ...Fabulous cars in the parking lot many days!
google avatar

Ellen D.

Yelp
There's a lot of options and it smells good in there but the coffee grinds are kind of shaky. I tried a Nicaragua blend and another roast and both were too dark for my taste (the flavors weren't that balanced). Most of the espresso based drinks were okay but seemed to have shaky flavor as well. The coffee left a bitter taste. Overall, the atmosphere was a bit crazy. We started ordering and had them start making drinks and helping other people without finishing and paying for ours. Kind of small indoor space and quite loud, at least there's outdoor spaces.

Frank M.

Yelp
Brazil Dattera, Monsoon Malibar, Kenya AA, Gold Coast Blend, etc. This place serves the finest coffee in the realm.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
So I walk a few blocks out of my way to support the local coffee shop (Starbucks was closer). Get to the counter and was told I can't order a latte because they close at 3:00. I asked the barista what time it was and she said 2:55, and i asked again what time do you close, to which she responded 3:00. But apparently they're in such a rush to get out the door that they clean and dismantle the espresso machine before they close. So I leave, as does the couple behind me. So, not only are the hours posted here on Yelp not kept up to date by the business (says 5:30, it's really easy to edit your business page during this time of reduced hours), but they apparently can't serve people before closing. Doesn't make sense.
google avatar

Kim R.

Yelp
I randomly went in here on a whim and damn. their drinks are dependently good. a donut shop next door would complete the picture :D

Ji L.

Yelp
So I order a large, hot, almond latte. The barista (sic) looks for almond syrup, and then comes back to confirm my order, so I specify "almond milk, no syrup." "Oh." After she makes the latte, she pours more cold almond milk from the milk carton into the latte. I ask her why she did that. She says because the mug wasn't full. I said, Doesn't that change the taste?" She says, "I don't think so." So the owner may want to consider training the baristas and checking that they understand how to make the drinks before letting them serve customers." The latte itself: over roasted beans and no creaminess
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick coffee break on a long drive during the winter... Decor is great, seems like they roast their own coffee beans there. Super cool to see all the different coffee beans for sale! We ordered a skim cappuccino and a iced latte, both tasted smooth and good balance. Seems like there is a outdoor sitting area as well. Overall cool place, I wish I was more of a coffee connoisseur to enjoy this place, I would go again when I am in the area!

Yelp
I recently opened a new salon in New Canaan, and one of the best places I have been to so far is Zumbach's Gourmet Coffee. Two words. Coffee Heaven. Whether you want to buy your own coffee to grind/brew at home or to get a coffee to drink there/on the go.... this place is fantastic. Really cool environment inside with all the different types of coffee beans displayed. They have outdoor seating so it's a great place to sit and have a coffee. They have dedicated parking which is really helpful in New Canaan. My first time at Zumbach's, I didn't realize they don't take credit card. I had no cash on me..... so they gave me the coffee and told me don't worry about it... pay for it the next time you come in. Such a nice gesture!
google avatar

Hannah D.

Yelp
Stopped for a quick cup of coffee....just got a small Hazelnut coffee but it was delicious! They roast their beans and sell them right there....so many varieties! Walking in, the smell was sooo comforting and inviting! A few small tables to enjoy your coffee outside on a nice street. Only drawback is that they only take cash or check but don't have it clearly posted which almost posed a problem....fortunately someone in our group spotted me a few dollars
google avatar

Yasmin A.

Yelp
Coffee, coffee and more coffee! This is a fabulous coffee shop located by the new Canaan Train Station. If you love coffee, this shop will not disappoint you. There are all kinds of varieties. You can purchase fresh ground coffee to take home or choose from many fresh-brewed varieties to go. Or relax a little and have your coffee in the shop. The ceiling is covered with tons of college flags, and there's so much to look at in the shop. This is not a place to get breakfast, although there are some muffins you can get on the go. This is a cozy coffee shop and definitely worth a visit!
google avatar

Howard R.

Yelp
While they're coffee is just average in the world of independent coffee shops they have been always super friendly whenever I've stopped by. They currently have a very relaxing outdoor setup and you can grab a sandwich from Tony's next door. Overall a solid 3.5 star experience that is far and away better than goliath coffee down the street.
google avatar

Gennady K.

Yelp
Atrocious service. "Barista" not wearing a mask while making coffees. Completely messed up my order, which of course I couldn't do anything with but drink due to covid
google avatar

Heather G.

Yelp
The smell of this place alone is FANTASTIC. Sure, there's not comfy chairs to loll about in like in Starbucks, but the coffee was fantastic. Probably second in my mind to Kaffe 1668 in Tribeca. Same price as Starbucks, but WAY better quality, and I like Starbucks. Too bad I don't frequent New Caanan ever, because this place is GOOD. Cash only.
google avatar

Parker A.

Yelp
Went here today for the first time and the employees were super nice and helpful! Not to mention delicious coffee. Super impressed. It also smells AMAZING when you first walk in through the door, will definitely be back.
google avatar

Mike E.

Yelp
Best coffee I've had that didn't come from a civet's butt. They have great flavors like toasted almond, Hawaiian hazelnut, and vanilla buttercream. It's cash only but they're very cool about letting you not pay if you don't have cash once they've seen you there a bunch of times then letting you repay the next time. The line to pay is sometimes amorphous and that's annoying. Not sure about the customer service complaints others said. Staff has always been nice to me.

Rich S.

Yelp
This is the best place in New Canaan to get consistently over roasted coffee. I am not sure why you would buy their Jamaican Blue Mountain or some of the other high end coffees when they are roasted dark and oily. That's a lot of money to spend on a coffee that doesn't taste any different than a dark roasted inexpensive Columbian which you can buy green at $5 a lb.
google avatar

Hadley H.

Yelp
Although I am a loyal member of Starbucks for their convenience, every time I come home to CT, I always get my coffee at Zumbach's and a blueberry muffin. You can't beat the hometown feel, friendly service and delicious coffee. As you'll notice when they walk in, there's a large selection of coffee beans for purchase (ground or unground)--roasted on the premises, which makes for a wonderful aroma around the store. One thing in particular that I like about Zumbach's is that no matter who's behind the counter, whether it's their full time staff or their part-time high school staff, they're always super helpful and polite.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Totally blown away by the customer service here. I'm visiting for work and came in to get a drink and a muffin. They don't take credit cards, and when I asked where I might find an ATM, they said, "If you're from out of town, this is on us. Don't worry about it." Not only is the coffee good, but you just don't find a place where old fashioned customer service and the big picture is valued like this any more. Nice job, folks. I'll be back, and I'll also be mailing you a check for simply seeing the big picture!

Yelp
I just broke up with a guy from New Canaan that introduced me to Zumbach's Gourmet Coffee. I'm from Virginia, so needless to say, being introduced to Zumbach's is the best damn thing that came out of the relationship. Zumbach's was love at first sight. In a way, Zumbach's is what everyone desires in an ideal partner. The moment you walk into the store, you are greeted with the decadent smell of coffee and get butterflies. Ya know how the butterflies tend to disappear after awhile? Not with Zumbach's. We all know that size DOES in fact matter, so I know what you're thinking. Let me tell you that the serving sizes at Zumbach's do not disappoint!! When your drink hits your lips you never want it to end. Time after time, Zumbach's satisfies. If you take Zumbach's home you're in for a real treat ;) Wanna grind? Wanna go full bean?? Zumbach's aims to please. Most importantly, Zumbach's will not let you down. Were you dropped from your ex's Spotify account? Zumbach's has great tunes. Did your ex have sketchy females/males on his/her social media?? Zumbach's don't play online. Did your ex get angry at you and yell at you for wanting to pursue your passions?? Zumbach's gives you the boost you need to conquer your dreams. Did your ex tell you that he was only afraid of losing you because he didn't want to put in the effort to find someone else??? Zumbach's TREATS YOU LIKE YOU DESERVE: LIKE A DAMN QUEEN. Oh, and the prices are low, the staff is great, and the place is cozy and warm. As I am semi-grieving the end of a romantic relationship, I am more so grieving the loss of the most magical, real love I have ever had: Zumbach's Gourmet Coffee. May we cross paths again.
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
I really want to like Zumbach's, I really do. It's local, reasonably cute, is not an 'unmentionable national chain' and is close to my client. Unfortunately, they just don't cut the mustard. From poor customer service to poor roasting techniques and a complete lack of knowledge on how to pull a good shot this is not a shop worth supporting. Just to be clear I purchased coffee here 10+ times, so the rating below is not based on a one time visit. I break down my ratings into categories and then average my categories into a final rating. Coffee/Process Knowledge: 1 Star There is one barista that seems to have a clue on how to pull a shot. A good shot is arguably 18-22 (~25) seconds. I had a barista here pull at 55+ second (stopped counting) shot. I've had to ask more than once for a drink to be remade as well. This is not acceptable. Another indication of a lack of knowledge was when I asked if they did pour-overs and they had no idea what that meant. As another person mentioned the presence of a lot of flavored coffees seems to detract from Zumbach's as a premium coffee house. Bean Roasting: 1 Star As many others have reported Zumbach's roasts their own beans. Also as at least one mentioned, they over-roast. That burnt/bitter taste you are tasting is poorly roasted beans. Additionally, each time I visited the coffee was roasted very differently. I guess if you add enough sugar/cream/flavor you can hide this but having an espresso made from this roast is a very poor experience. Customer Service: 2 Stars Mediocre at best. There is one guy that is super nice and helpful, the rest of the staff asks as though they are put out having to help someone. I guess the fact they have self-service drip is a good thing. Ambiance: 3 Stars Cute, older brick building. Rustic but nice inside. They lose a star for being a place that I wouldn't want to hang out. Does no one here in New Canaan want to go to the coffee house, get a coffee in a real mug and sit and enjoy the space (reading/surfing)? This is not a good space to do that. Location: 3 Stars The best feature of the coffee house. Great location, close to the train station, downtown. Couldn't be better. Coffee Drinks: 1 Star See above...if you don't have good ingredients and good knowledge you won't have a good drink. It's bad. Drip/espresso/all of it. Nothing else to say. Overall Rating: 1.8 Stars rounded to 2
google avatar

Shnagga D.

Yelp
Mediocre at best. I had high hopes visiting Zumbach's for the first time. Unfortunately, the quality didnt deliver. First off, upon approaching the shop, you are hit with the distinct smell of beans being over roasted. After walking in, you are immediately let down seeing the coffee being dispensed by a gas station styled pump press opposite of the register. Behind the counter is a plethora of flavored beans, a tell-tale sign of poor coffee. I honestly went next door to Tony's Deli (highly recommended) for a second cup of coffee and enjoyed it just the same, and half the price. This shop is a prime example of people with money who like to believe they know what quality is, and are quick to shell out top dollars for coffee they are told is "high quality." There is nothing quality of the coffee provided here. The beans taste cheap and are masked by the array of poor flavors. I can at least commend them for at least roasting in-house. If you are in this part of CT/NY, I would suggest either Redding Roasters in Bethel, Blue Bottle in NYC, or Dave's Coffee in Rhode Island.

Keith M.

Yelp
Coffee snobs dream! Great house roaster with large selection of beans available for purchase. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Cost effective. I come here daily when I'm in town and bring back beans to tide me over till my next visit. Cash only... don't let that mess up your visit.
google avatar

Alexandra C.

Yelp
The quality is very good, the aroma terrific, the prices high, but that's what you get with high quality. Great coffee aside, the 5 stars go to the ownership/management of this place who have been supplying the powerless people (and volunteers) in town all week after the storm with free coffee. You guys ROCK!!! Blow Starbucks away in fact. Thank you.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that I cannot speak to the quality of the brewed coffee, which is rumored to be exceptional. However, I visited this afternoon for a simple latte and wasn't impressed. I walked in and found no comfortable seating options, which bummed me out because I was planning on spending my lunch break. More importantly, my latte was essentially warm milk. There was little trace of espresso and almost no foam. If you're in a rush and need a quick cup, this could be fine. But if you're looking for the cafe experience with a nice espresso-based drink and book, I wouldn't recommend it.
google avatar

Deborah H.

Yelp
Very much a great place for coffee (and I don't like coffee unless it is extra smooth) I had a cafe au lait of decaf Sumatra and it was lovely and sitting outside admiring a cherry tree in bloom in the sun was great. Way, way better than Starbucks-I wish we had a place like this in Ridgewood. An the prices were great.

Taylor V.

Yelp
There's decent coffee and the staff is really friendly. I would just be warned that they only take cash and don't advertise it anywhere. They were very nice, however, and gave us an IOU so we could run to the ATM.
google avatar

Your F.

Yelp
Awesome coffee and you support the community by shopping here because it is LOCALLY OWNED!!! The staff is hip and make a mean cup. The cute older man who owns the place brews the beans on site.
google avatar

Rick N.

Yelp
This is a proper coffee house! Beans roasted in the store for the extremely refreshing smell. Courteous staff, tasty coffee and great little bites to eat. Feels like a real neighborhood place...because it is! Keep up the great work!

Courtney M.

Yelp
The BEST (and REALLY freshly-roasted) coffee beans ANYWHERE. There is no substitute, I take a bag when I travel. (I love the Kenyan Dark and Guatemalan dark) The ultimate coffee joint ...even newspaper around to read, it's on a lovely corner in lovely New Canaan, with a relaxed, very local feel. It's what a coffee place would be, if you could dream one up.

James A.

Yelp
Absolutely terrific coffee spot with a huge variety of coffees from all over the world at extremely reasonable prices. Highly recommend.

David L.

Yelp
Gotta love this wonderful local coffee roaster and retail coffee shop. Not only is the coffee VERY good, but it's roasted on site - several batches/day with beans imported from coffee growing areas around the world - and thus extremely fresh! And Will, today's roastmeister, was unbelievably kind to our 5-year old Andrew, teaching him all the ins and outs of roasting coffee beans - and letting him help with the process. Andrew's batch will surely be the best ever! Thanks to Will and all the rest of the Zumbach crew - you're the best!
google avatar

Kait M.

Yelp
The coffee was delicious. I wish they had a bagel or some small food options. I was able to grab a muffin so that was nice. They do not have a bathroom. I was in town for a business trip and the flight time left me about 2.5 hours to kill. It was tough to work without WiFi and tough to last 2.5 hours drinking coffee without a bathroom. But they are busy had great coffee and seem to have many regulars!
google avatar

Nolan B.

Yelp
Best coffee place around! This neat little shop has better prices than Starbucks and 10x better coffee. Whether you're looking to grab a pound to bring home or a specialty drink, they have a large selection. I make it a point to go here because the service is so great! The only down side is that it's cash only... with that being said, when I went it to grab a latte, I didn't have cash and I was all embarrassed and swore to come right back with cash. The kind people at Zumbach's told me to come back whenever I came back next and pay for the last drink. This kind of trust in clients and constant smiling faces keeps me coming back. I highly recommend making the trip :)
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
Best coffee in the whole area. Best service! Really good prices. Is an amazing experience! Also, best iced coffee, hot chocolate and cappuccino. Just for people that enjoy real and good coffee!!
google avatar

Gennifer D.

Yelp
Where do all the cool kids hang out in New Canaan? Right here - along with cops, old-timers, coffee breakers, moms on the go, and everyone else about town. What I find so charming about Zumbach's is that on one hand, they are so intent about being all about the coffee: a roaster and bins of single-origin beans are front and center when you walk in, and purchasers of a cup can choose between several varieties. At the same time, they cultivate a decidedly down-to-earth atmosphere where anyone can feel comfortable sitting with friends or reading. The folks behind the counter are always so friendly. As all the locals know, it's cash only!

Daniel J.

Yelp
Excellent coffees with complex flavors. It's just as good if you have them grind beans for you to take home. They keep things simple. They basically only serve coffee, and I like that. Their self serve coffee station has 8 different varieties to choose from. There's no food except for a basket of muffins, which are actually pretty good. I have only two minor gripes that keep me from giving it 5 stars. First, they are cash only. I know card companies charge a fee, and it sucks for small businesses, but I hardly ever have cash on hand. Otherwise I'd go there more. Second, the self serve coffee is hotter than a nuclear reactor. They either need to cool down the coffee or give you a cozy for your cup. I have to grab a fistful of napkins to protect my hands. That said, if you like a simple cup of black coffee like I do, this is an awesome place. I go as much as I can, especially when they host car shows in downtown New Canaan.
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
I had great expectations when I went in, based on the range of coffees and the fact that they roast them on the premises, but the coffee I ordered was really mediocre at best.
google avatar

Nunya B.

Yelp
The fact that this place isn't reviewed yet is amazing in and of itself. The giant coffee roaster, the wide selection (of both type of bean and price...), and freshly brewed coffee to go all day, this place is great. Sometimes it's packed by everyone from kids to cops, other times it's truly a peaceful place to enjoy some coffee...a New Canaan secret for sure.
google avatar

Drew M.

Yelp
Zumbach's is a town treasure, as evidenced by the vast array of coffees roasted and served onsite. The perfect place to meet friends or read the paper. Doug and the crew run a great, friendly operation.
google avatar

Nicolas D.

Yelp
#1 coffee shop in Fairfield County CT with wide variety of organic, fair trade, free range ........f$%#*kin' incredible brews. Great cup of joe
google avatar

Lauryn S.

Yelp
very cute!! they don't serve you if you're looking at your phone which is such a nice change of pace! the hot chai is so good
