On the Grid : Zumix

"Co-Founders Bob Grove and current Executive Director Madeleine Steczynski founded ZUMIX in 1991 as a response to Boston’s worst wave of youth violence. ZUMIX began as a summer songwriting program with 24 youth, $200, and the simple idea that giving youth something to be passionate about could transform lives and elevate communities. Year-round events are organized to provide East Boston residents with access to top-quality arts and cultural events. In January, 2010, ZUMIX moved into the Engine Company 40 Firehouse after a 5 ½ year $4.6 million capital campaign. Today ZUMIX serves over 500 youth per year through after-school and summer programming and 500 through in-school partnerships. Over 10,000 additional adults, children, and families attend our community events and festivals. ZUMIX is an East Boston-based nonprofit organization dedicated to building our community through music and the arts. Holding the belief that music is the most powerful means of developing adolescent self-identity, their award-winning music and creative technology programming is designed to equip youth with the tools necessary to reach their full potential, while creating a safe space for youth to explore who they are and who they want to be. Through community events, ZUMIX provides access to top-quality arts experiences for a low-income, under-served neighborhood." - Nick DiStefano

The effort and infrastructure at ZUMIX is special. The kids benefit from 1 on 1 lessons and off-site visits to places like Gillete Stadium. However, if ZUMIX is truly committed to uplifting families and communities, it's essential that the organization reflect that same care in how it treats the community it serves. That means encouraging inclusivity, reducing language barriers, and ensuring equal access to field trips and special events—not just for new participants, but also for returning and long-time students. Over time, I’ve heard thoughtful suggestions from students, staff, and families—ideas that could enrich ZUMIX's culture—but these voices are too often overlooked. As a former donor and someone who believes in your mission, I would love to see a renewed, intentional effort to build more culturally inclusive and welcoming spaces for everyone who walks through your doors.

Voice classes, classes of different musical instruments, musical groups, plays, radio programs, writing, design and production of videos and music, live shows. Zumix does an excellent job supporting the leadership and empowerment of our children.

I’m leaving a five out of five star review only because I’m not allowed to give 5 thousand out of five. Zumix, for years, has been a pinnacle of East Boston. It’s not only a fantastic way to keep the youth off the streets, but truly is an empowering organization like NO other. I know this because I myself went there many years ago, and the knowledge that they bestowed upon me has granted me the ability to “make it” in my industry. I now live in Florida, mixing live bands every night. I wouldn’t know what to start with when it comes to mixing if Zumix didn’t show me. If I could pick ANYTHING in the world to get unlimited funding permenantly, it would be Zumix. The staff is selfless when it comes to their students. Madeleine, Dan, Corey...you all rock. There are no words to the amount of gratefulness I have for people like Zumix staff. They are doing humanity a favor with every move they make. Zumix is still the greatest thing in the world to me. Thank you all!

Yelp
What an awesome venue! We had my daughters baby shower here today, and I can't say enough about how much we loved it. From the people that work here, to how helpful they are, clean and organized, and it has everything you need! I highly recommend Zumix, and we are looking forward to having another even there soon. Maybe the baby's first birthday!

Yelp
Attended a beautiful baby shower here on a Sunday- the large windows let in plenty of light and there were lots of sweet kids pictures in sidewalk chalk outside. The intact fire pole was a fun feature, and two spacious bathrooms in the back made it ideal. Parking can be tricky, but I got lucky and found a spot. The hostess was sweet and offered to help us clean up after too! Great all around!

Yelp
In the summertime, Zumix holds free outdoor concerts from 5-7 on Tuesdays in Bremen Park and Sundays in Piers Park. Please go and support the kids as they work the mixing boards and continue their interest in music production and engineering. There's a wide variety of entertainment throughout the season so check out Zumix' website for event details.

Yelp
While dialing in a local, commercial-driven, FM station, I happened upon 94.9FM ZUMIX, an arts-based youth development organization. This is an incredibly diverse commercial-free, community station, operated by Boston youth and adults sharing their cultural music, stories, and perspectives. It's also a place for local musicians to submit their music. Check out the Radio Schedule on their website to find a program that interests you. Definitely check out this fantastic radio station that's run by locals for locals.

Yelp
This is the best if you have a hidden talent or your looking for one I mean this will help you sing drum and etc and the best part is it's free. You get to learn stuff since I went there before I know mostly about singing and drumming drumming this taught me how to drum with actual drums and know I know tips from them and they helped me a lot if you like making beats or just like the drums they will help a lot and they instructors are very nice. In singing we go every day at the assigned time and we learn and vote on the song we practice and then at the end ZUMIX brings food that you pay for and you can see the stuff that other people have worked very hard for and you get to preform what you have been practicing in front of a stage #BEST MUSIC PROGRAM EVER

Yelp
ZUMIX is a wonderful, award winning organization that promotes music education to children in and around East Boston. The upcoming Jazz and the Firehouse series promises to be wonderful. I can't wait to go. Here's the link: http://www.zumix.org/community/events

Yelp
An amazing non-profit for kids music school. Everyone here gives 110% of themselves. The teachers and staff are dedicated. The kids all get along. When you walk into the front you hear the musical talents of some many kids just eager to learn. Check out Zumix.org for their school semester calendar and check out the free concerts offerd during the summer. Support the students and support Zumix.

Yelp
My son has been taking 3 different programs at Zumix for the last 2 months. He loves it and I can see a difference in his confidence, social skills and music skills. Zumix is a fantastic community resource!
