Great traditional German food. Small seasonal menu with a few other Bavarian staples offered. They had a long wine list that included wines from all over the world. We stuck with a local wine the waitress recommend, it was delicious. Only one pils beer on the menu, it was light and refreshing. It's asparagus season, so all of the specialty menu meals included white asparagus. It was delicious. 100% would recommend.

Google
Serves local wine in chalices and amazing sausages for very reasonable prices. Friendly service and very good local cuisine. Only accepts cash which they have written in multiple places. The outside seating is very charming and peaceful and indoor is full of character. I'd definitely come back and bring guests here.

The oldest building in Regensburg, this old tavern dates to the year 900! The food is amazing, the staff is funny and polite and the atmosphere is really cozy! Celebrated my birthday here with two friends and will gladly come back here when visiting Rothenburg next time. Just make sure to reserve a table in advance!

Google
Restaurant with its own spirit in ancient house. I was lucky to get place outside without reservation, but i would recommend reserve place because you don’t want to miss this place. One of best meal what i ate - hollandaise sauce was divine.

The reviews don't lie! The food is some of the best you will find in Germany. Try the Obatzda as its a starter, if you like cheese you will love this 😍🤤😍 Klauss the waiter was a true professional at his job also.

Zur Hoell (To Hell) is located in one of the oldest poor houses in the historic Old Rothenburg, and there is no better atmosphere to experience the old town like here. The establishment is quirky, and filled with antiques from times bygone. It feels like a tavern, perhaps not from the medieval ages, but certainly a few hundred years ago. The food is excellently executed. We had the fresh spring vegetable soup, which was light and refreshing, invoking feelings of spring blooming in the valley surrounding the village. For mains, the seasonal asparagus is a must. Bavarian white asparagus, or spargel, is a traditionally springtime treat. Generous, daily picked stalks of asparagus were simply cooked then doused in a rich hollandaise. The accompanying sausages, schnitzel, and potatoes were well executed but the asparagus is the star in spring. Portions are generous. The wine selection is also well curated. The dry crisp Franconian whites pair well with the food. Service is excellent. The wait staff are professional and extremely kind. Reservations recommended. Would highly recommend for classic Bavarian cuisine in a historic tavern.

Google
Fantastic little restaurant serving authentic German food in a 1000 year house. Restaurant is small so make sure you have a reservation. Service was exceptional, food generous in its portions but the setting and atmosphere the clear winner. Please note that they only accept cash.

Yelp
So I basically went there last summer in 2019 and never got to review this place, but I basically dreamt last night that I was back in Rothenburg eating at this restaurant I was so fond of. I dreamt. Of this restaurant. After one year. That's how good and memorable the food is there (in case I haven't convinced you yet, here's a photo of me in the back holding my hands in joy while staring at my creamed potatoes topped with shrimps). Just give yourself the favour to have a romantic dinner there. It's well worth your wallet.

Yelp
The resturant was small and quiet, had lots of history and the food was ok. There were too many asparagus items on the menu and we were still hungry when we left and had to eat again at another restaurant! I think we didn't order enough of the main course and should have tried 3/4 platters

Yelp
After all the reviews I had seen, I had to try this place. I got the sausages and kraut plate and I liked it. My wife got the skewer of steak, pork and roasted veggies. Great presentation at the table, and it was very good. Bowl of gravy sat at the bottom of the skewer, and it was very good. Area we sat in was very tight, and was mostly Americans. You could hear everyone's conversation. Servers were very friendly and accommodating. Main entrée menu is very limited. Specials on the day we went, were goose, venison and lobster, and none of those appealed to us.

Yelp
We were referred here by the fine staff at Hotel Herrnschlossen and the ambience, wine and especially our dinner were Exzellent. Fresh Brot too. Can't wait to dine here again.

Yelp
We read up on this place in advance, and knew we needed to make a reservation, but unfortunately couldn't get through to the restaurant by phone mid-afternoon (technical difficulties?). By the time we got into our hotel, it was 7:00 when the receptionist tried to call: no answer. So we went over in person, and managed to finagle a reservation for 8:30. After an hour and a quarter of walking about town, we got a table. Yay! The menu was only one page long (the drinks were maybe five pages long), plus a page of mushroom specials since chanterelles are in season. We both tried the mushroom soup, it was rather mildly flavored, with a thick, kind of pea-soupy consistency, a touch of cream. I had the bratwurst (long, thin, fine texture, grilled, a Franconian specialty according to our waiter) with mushroom cream sauce (whole small chanterelles), side of dumpling. Good stuff. Dessert was a small, round, chocolate cake with two balls of chocolate ice cream and whipped cream and cherry sauce. I thought the waiter knew I wanted the two-bratwurst meal, only one showed up on the plate, but two were on the bill. They adjusted the bill right away. Our waiter was excellent (aside from the bratwurst problem). The bathrooms aren't clearly marked: men's is on the right, women on the left.

Yelp
A very nice restaurant in an interesting location. Food was good. Limited seating so be sure to make a reservation ahead of time.

Yelp
Amazing food and very reasonably priced! The best sauerkraut I had on our romantic road trip. Be sure to make reservations. The sausages were excellent. The pork shoulder was delicious as well. The staff was so attentive and kind. They even give ask if you want more food!

Yelp
I have wanted to eat at Zur Holl for years. I finally made the visit after four hours on trains, buses and walking. I had emailed the establishment prior to my visit to make reservations for dinner and received a confirmation email back. I have traveled enough in Europe to know that you need reservations to eat anywhere. When I arrived there was a line. When I approached the hostess they informed my that my name was not on the list! I showed them the confirmation email and they still said they my name was not there! I emailed the staff person who sent me the confirmation and she stated that there was a communication error and she apologized. Unfortunately, the apology did not get me dinner and now my trip to Rothenberg is marred by the restaurants inability to communicate to each other. My suggestion is to make sure you reach out AGAIN prior to your visit to reconfirm your reservation.

Yelp
Another great meal in Rothenburg. We reserved the little cellar room where our table was a huge ancient bellows. My three companions got the Potato soup and it was delicious. We shared a charcuterie of local meats, sausages, and cheese which was also good. At places like this I try to avoid the dishes that are common elsewhere in Germany like a schnitzel, so I ordered the lamb. It came as five wonderful little bone-in cutlets served with a ratatouille. With just a little salt and pepper added the dish was perfect! Good local wine and courteous staff.

Yelp
Cheese platter was good with sweet grapes and warm bread. Flavour of the cheese were not very varied though but they were nice with varying textures. Salmon was a bit fishy but cooked well with a crispy salmon skin. Risotto was a bit bland for my liking but it was creamy and comforting to eat. Zucchini was baked a bit too much such that there were some charred bits. Asparagus was good with the hollandaise sauce and the sausage was juicy and tasty. The potatoes were also seasoned well with butter. Lava cake was a bit of a letdown since there were no "lava" flowing out but it was warm and the contrast with the cold ice cream was a good fit. Service was good, the staff were all able to communicate effectively in English, there was also an English menu provided. The food took a bit long though (around 30 minutes in between our appetiser cheese board and our mains). We also did not have a reservation but they asked for us to come half an hour later and we managed to get a table then.

Yelp
This is a rustic charming restaurant. The food was fast & very good. However the very best part of the whole experience was the staff. They are so kind & friendly. Highly recommend. As a heads up it is cash only.

Yelp
Came to Rothenburg with some coworkers on a business trip and decided to Yelp a place for dinner. Boy am I happy we came here! The restaurant is inside the oldest house built in Rothenburg so it was a nice tourist spot to see and the dinner was authentic and overall experience great. To start, our waiter was very welcoming and patient as we took some time to pick out drinks and food. He explained all the specials and brought us samples of wine to try. Usually after a German dinner, I'm stuffed and can barely finish the food. I had wiped my plate clean from my meal and even ate an entire dessert I could definitely have shared. For dinner I got the salmon with Parmesan and potatoes. The potatoes were so well seasoned and the salmon came apart beautifully. My coworkers got a fish with wild boar and veal meatballs. They were all tender and the sauces and seasoning made them taste better than anything I've tried in a while. We each got a different special of the day to try and enjoyed every bite. At the end, I didn't want my dinner to end. I got a homemade apple strudel dessert with vanilla ice cream, apple sauce and whipped cream. It all melted in my mouth. The restaurant has some old German architecture and there are stones and stairs taking you to small spaces like even the bathrooms. It looks like they have a cellar below and I can totally see why people said it has a Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones vibe. I'm really glad we decided to check this place it and now I have a new favorite place to go to when I come back for more business trips!

Yelp
Reading the reviews, below a lot of ppl suggest making a reservation as it can get busy. They are all correct, I saw ppl get turned away from the restaurant. This was possibly hands down the best meal I had while in Germany. That being said, my husband and I were able to have dinner without a reservation. When we showed up it was still earlier in the evening, but the staff warned us that we would only have the table for 1 hr. We sat in a tiny little table near what looked like an old stove, and the ambiance was just perfect. For dinner I had one of the specials, pork medallions with boiled potatoes and white asparagus. My husband had two sausages with a sauerkraut. Both of our entrees were perfectly seasoned and executed. My pork was cooked medium/medium rare so tender and juicy. I'm not one for soft veggies (as the asparagus seemed steamed or boiled) but they clearly salted the cooking broth. And the butter sauce it came with--divine! My husband and I also both got glasses of white wine for our dinner. And both were really great wines, at a very reasonable price. My husband's dinner was also pretty good, we both agreed that if sauerkraut tasted more like this we might be inclined to eat it. All of the food was tasty and our waitress checked on us during dinner to make sure we didn't need anything. During dinner, they even offered us more potatoes and bread if needed. In short, if you're nearby check this place out!

Yelp
Amazing dinner here. First off, we were SO glad we made day-of reservations. I can't tell you how many people tried getting seats when we were eating and couldn't because they were booked. The ambiance here is wonderful - very old world feel. We learned on our nightwatchman's tour that it's the oldest building in Rothenburg - neat! The staff were super friendly and the food was outstanding. I cleaned my plate and then the server brought me more food (for free) just because. Who does that!?!? I'll absolutely come back here again.

Yelp
Fantastic!!! The moment we stepped into the place... the service was exceptional, the server was thorough and attentive, the food was top notch!! I'm a flight attendant and travel the world.. I absolutely loved this tiny out of the way place. Everything was extraordinary. It fits the walled village of Rothenburg perfect!! Frau Schreiber

Yelp
It is a popular place, so I would suggest either going earlier than 5:30 or making a reservation. I ordered the bratwurst and substituted the sauerkraut for potatoes. It was delicious! My cousin got the venison special, and he loved it. We split the meat and cheese platter and it was very good as well. My cousin ate three helpings of the horseradish and says it's the best he's ever had. The staff was very nice. The place has a good atmosphere too.

Yelp
We learned about Zur Hoell during our Night Watchman tour & not only should you take that tour but you should make a stop at this pub! Lovely beer hall & restaurant that uses locally sourced ingredients The building is over 1000 years old....dates back to something around 900 & is the oldest house in Rothenburg ob der Tauber & is part of the ambiance & history that make Rothenburg ob der Tauber so charming Our tour let out at something like 9pm & we had already enjoyed dinner but I saw they offer homemade soups, delish looking cheese plates & all kinds of meaty dishes like sausages or spare ribs. Their menu is small but mighty & had we been in town another night, we would have definitely made this a meal stop For the devilish nightowls, they offer a wide selection of beer & wine - but alas, no cognac to be found - this was hell indeed! But we got the t-shirt so all was not lost And to quote our lovely Night Watchman, when locals they tell you to go To Hell, it's their kind way of letting you know about this place! You'll thank the heavens you listened!

Yelp
This was absolutely unexpected dinning experience in my traveling. Having thought this is one of the most tourists crammed town so I calibrated the expectation. I did not booked but given 100 mins to finish the meal before the reservation people show up. Smart flexibility the waiter. I was recommended a good dry wine with fruity surrounding in month. Lovely. I ordered the white asparagus with sizzling pork and lamb sausages, siding potatoes in hollandaise. The cooking was efficient. The lamb sausage was definitely the best I've had ever. Asparagus was quite special as this was my first try in German. Very fresh! The waiter even asked if I want some extra potatoes and he was amazing friendly and knew his stuffs. I recommend this place!

Yelp
This was a perfect evening! Even though they were very busy and we didn't have a reservation they happily accommodate us! The food was perfect and the atmosphere was just what we were looking for. I do recommend reservations as they do not have very much space so you will be lucky (like we were) to get a table.
google avatar

Yelp
This is definitely the best spot in Rothenburg. The soup and dark bread was amazing. The meat was absolutely delicious. When I return this will be my first stop. Everything was fresh, delicious, reasonably priced. The decor is wonderful, the waiters spoke great English, were able to give us some great suggestions.

Yelp
Loved! One of the best meals of the trip! Zur Holl feels like something straight out of a movie. Lord of the Rings, Game of a Thrones... it is where our heroes retire after a long day to break bread and strategize their next move. The food was outstanding. We ordered sausage for an appetizer and it was excellent. Very lean. We ordered screws of pork and beef. The meat was lean and succulent. It was accompanied by grilled vegetables, green salad, roasted potatoes, peppercorn sauce and brown bread. It was a filling meal but not a gut bomb. Everything was lean and as fresh as it gets. I wanted to try dessert but I was too full. There was a huge selection of local wines that were excellent. The price point for Zur Holl is extremely reasonable. We spent 60 euro on an appetizer, two entrees and 3 glasses of wine. It is a steal. The staff is kind and helpful. Make a reservation!!!! I saw many, many people being turned away who did not have a reservation. You do not want to miss out on this dining experience. It is way more fun then any of those places on the plaza.

Yelp
This is a very famous tavern. The food is fantastic and the presentation is amazing! Make a reservation this place is very popular with locals and travellers alike! Always try the specials. You can't beat the steak skewer and the way it's served is so fun! The experience, building and food are all 5 star! If someone tells you to "go to hell" take their advice! (German translation Hell)

Jeff N.

Yelp
Very cool place. Food, feel and staff wonderful. I'm so upset I didn't get to have another meal there! It was a slow week in the town, other places were closed. A lucky find.

Yelp
This restaurant is not just a place for an amazing meal, but an amazing experience. One you do not forget. Went twice in three days.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cute little restaurant with excellent service. We ordered the short ribs and the special of white asparagus with Wiener schnitzel. The ribs are amazing and come with a lovely salad that is definitely enough for two to split. The special was okay, the waiter was generous with the hollandaise sauce and even brought extra potatoes, but I personally wasn't a fan of the white asparagus and the schnitzel was on the smaller side, given this I was a bit taken aback by the price upon seeing the bill of $25 euro for just the special. The ribs are an amazing deal at $13.50 though!

B R.

Yelp
Visited on Halloween without a reservation. The restaurant itself was 'cozy' but warm and well lit. The prices were a bit high but the food was very good. Overall, probably a bit overrated but worth the experience to say you've eaten in Hell.

Yelp
My wife and I waltzed in for a late dinner during our stay in Rothenburg and were warmly greeted by the exceptional staff. After a brief wait (fortunately it was the off-season) we were seated at a cozy table and fed an incredibly satisfying meal that we'd happily eat again anytime! The ambiance was exactly what you'd want in a city as old as preserved as Rothenburg. Tables and rooms were small and cozy with lovely aromas wafting in from every angle. The salads were fresh and crisp. My wife ordered the duck special and I ordered the meat skewers and they were both absolutely delicious! The meats were succulent and satisfying. They served a portion of my skewer dish to me and then took the remainder back to the kitchen to keep it warm until I needed more - just amazing service! The sheer quantity of food was a bit overwhelming as they kept coming by the table to ask us if we wanted our side dishes refilled (a few more potatoes, etc.). If it's the off-season you might get lucky and not need a reservation here, but you should make one anyways...just to be certain. This was the best thing we did in Rothenburg.

Brant S.

Yelp
We stumbled on to this little place while visiting the Christmas market. We walked in and was welcomed with open arms. We didn't have a reservation but they were able to work us in. The hospitality was a 10 on a 1-5 scale, the food was the same. This was the best meal we had while bouncing around Germany. I would come back just to visit this amazing restaurant! Be sure to make a reservation!!!
google avatar

Armin E.

Yelp
This is such a cozy place. Great food and the service is impeccable. The ambiance is great. Medieval restaurant with bavarian flair. Try the 'obatzda' great cheese. We love this place.
google avatar

Derek B.

Yelp
This place was EPIC!!!! You MUST GO!!! Food was insanely delicious. We had a large 15+ party & I sampled every variant that was ordered. Every single dish was like a symphony of delicious melodies dancing across my palate. And- the building was laid in like 900AD. So historical is an understatement.
google avatar

Donna F.

Yelp
Awesome find thanks once again Yelp. We made a reservation and arrived a little early but the staff were extremely nice and got seats for us and the children while our table was prepared. The food was delicious. We started with the cheese with onions as an appetizer and man was it delicious! We had the 3 meat special with pork, ham and sausage. The boys had the spätzle. Delicious and the building itself was really a nice piece of history
google avatar

Peter L.

Yelp
Short and sweet. If you are in town it's a must go. Get a reservation if you can. Everything is great and ask for recommendations and wine pairings.
google avatar

Josh P.

Yelp
Great little wine bar. Typical traditional German food and large wine list especially for Germany. Friendly staff and open late!
google avatar

Bahar E.

Yelp
Great food in the oldest house in town. The hosts were very nice, we had the special which was mushrooms with king prawns and bread dumpling. They give you more mushroom sauce or dumpling if you want more. We did this before the watchman, worked our great with two young kids. Great food!
google avatar

Allie C.

Yelp
One of the best restaurants I've been too! The staff were so friendly, the food delicious, and the atmosphere very cozy. Definitely make a stop here if you can. I had the homemade gluhwein (get the white!), the cheese platter appetizer, and the duck special (amazing!) Our server was the nicest gentleman, offering us more dumplings and cabbage if we wanted and treated us so kindly despite being foreigners. I have nothing but great things to say about this place, as you can see. Thanks for the great evening!
google avatar

Mishra M.

Yelp
Even without a reservation it's worth to wait for a table. The food was really delicious, we shared duck with red kraut and potato dumpling and sausages with sauerkraut. Although the restaurant was packed it didn't took long to be served. After we ate almost half of the dish the waiter asked if we'd like a refill for our sides! That was much appreciated. Owner and waiter were really welcoming and took care of us. Please do not change anything!
google avatar

Yelp
Great german food and the hostess and servers are delightful! Reservations recommended and cash only.

Yelp
Really great food and local wine. Not your typical tourist food. Super cool place. I suggest reservations but they will accommodate. I was impressed by the staff and their ability to speak multiple languages.

Yelp
Awesome restaurant with super friendly staff and super tasty food! Want to come back if any chance

Yelp
I've returning here a second time; that's how good the culinary experience is here! The food was outstanding, the service top notch, and the ambience fantastic. You will feel like you're in the 1400s in this restaurant, but you will be eating like a king or queen. The presentation of the food is outstanding as well! Wine selection is very refined. This place is not to be missed when in Rothenburg, Germany!

Yelp
Small and boutique restaurant with very professional and traditional food. Recommendation from the chef was great.
google avatar

Jake S.

Yelp
Amazing service. We had no reservation, but Maximilian was able to find us two seats and was very attentive to us as we waited, providing constant updates and menu/specials explanation. Food was fantastic. My wife had the beef rolls special and I had the spare ribs. Great establishment with great food, great small town feel, and amazing service. What more can you ask for.
google avatar

Yelp
I came here on my last night in this magical town and left so disappointed. The food was average to bad and the portions were small. I have no idea how this can be considered one of the best restaurants in Rothenburg. My son had the schnitzel for 11 euro he received the smallest portion I could imagine and it tasted bland. I ordered the special it was a mixed grill sample of everything when it arrived I was shocked the plate was tiny it had a single sausage, a tiny pork steak, a sizzler quality small piece of beef, and two soggy potato croquettes. I was so looking forward to a great last dinner it was no where near what I had hoped.
google avatar

Oshrie Z.

Yelp
Awesome food in a building over a thousand years old . Not a huge selection ok otherwise so perfect and the mixed grill was crazy good and the cheese appetizer and desert not on menu . Also night watch man comes in at 9 and at 11

Pat J.

Yelp
Fantastic dinner in a mid evil restaurant in a mid evil town. Highly recommend. Go early, before 7pm and no problem getting a table.
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
Good food and drink. The night watchman told us in the place is been in business since 900 A.D. wow!
google avatar

Timothy B.

Yelp
Only posting this review as an advisory for people with kids - the menu is limited, especially kid options. Sat down and looked forward to eating because I'd seen and heard good things, but with four kids in tow from ages 6 to 14, two sets of parents couldn't find much on the menu that would satisfy them. Also a bit pricey. Food there is probably great, but recommend it be a dinner for adults only.
google avatar

Trea E.

Yelp
Love this medieval themed restaurant. Small and cozy with a very authentic feel. Their food was also delicious. My favorite in Rothenburg ob der Tauber!

Trisha L.

Yelp
Loved it! Fantastic food and service! So much history too. This is the best place in town. Definitely will go back next time we are in town.

Yelp
Highlights: the lamb chops with rot kohl (if you want rot kohl you have to ask them to switch out the regular veg), the schmalzt Brot, and the fried apples with Vanilleeis. This is a popular spot and getting a table may be a bit of an issue as people are walking in and out constantly. The selection of drinks are extensive and the selection of food is a bit limited. I personally was quite pleased with the rot kohl. It was sweeter than my favorite version but still really good. Which brings me to the ambience. It's dark, a bit cramped and reminds me of the Inn of the Prancing Pony in LOTR, so I LOVED it! There is a reason this place is popular.
