How We Pulled It Off: A Relaxed Barefoot Wedding on the Sands of Zanzibar

"The Zuri Zanzibar Hotel and Resort was chosen for its beautiful beaches, thatched roofs, wooden decor, and comprehensive event planning packages. The hotel handled nearly every aspect of the wedding planning, including flowers, music, and makeup artists. It also offered additional perks such as a boat ride, a tour of Stone Town, a snorkeling trip to Mnemba Island, a couple’s massage, and several meals."

Zuri Zanzibar Hotel & Resort

"Set the scene.Ocean zephyrs kick up scents from the nearby spice garden, hammocks swing in the breeze, pendants light the way up winding paths to teak, grass-roofed bungalows that appear out of nowhere, like elephants hiding in thick clumps of jungle and palm trees. But the beach is just steps away, a wondrous private curl of sand facing the Indian Ocean with thatched umbrellas. What’s the story? This opened in July 2018, a personal project by Czech-born Renaissance man Vaclav Dejcmar, whose CV includes a documentary on psychopaths in business and organizing Prague Fashion Week. He asked Prague-based design studio Jestico + Whiles to sort the interiors: It brought in lots of African textures and Sixties-style chairs and lamps to the party. Woven-basket pendants, lights made from bottles and carved wooden tables upcycled from old dhows. In the bathrooms, handmade curtains have been made by local social enterprise Chako Zanzibar, and bath products are from female seaweed farmers—Zuri has set out to support community projects from the start. What can we expect from our room?We stayed in a garden bungalow, which has a private terrace with hammock and an outdoor shower off the bathroom. There’s a sliver of a view of the ocean, but we didn't need more than that—the gardens are so well maintained, it's as if each room is hidden in its own private jungle. The room key is a silicon bracelet that you can wear in the pool (don’t lose this though, as replacements are expensive). Everything that could be considered unsightly can be tucked away behind local art. Wi-Fi is free, but our favorite detail is the eco-friendly air-con—the mosquito-netting canopy acted as a small cooling chamber, so the entire room didn't need to be ventilated. How about the food and drink? Each of the three restaurants and four bars has its own personality and menu but all are laid-back. Upendo is the main place to eat, with views out to sea and sand. Feel free to ask for a meal or sundowner set up on the beach for you. How does it fit into the island scene?Zanzibar hasn't had much of a shake up to its hotel game in some time—hotels nearby are fine at best—which is a real shame, as Zanzibar is the perfect bush-to-beach island to land on. Zuri has everything that places in the Seychelles or Maldives serve up (glorious beaches, palapas that you don't have to fight over, and several creative restaurants), but this is much closer by air. Anything we missed?Don't skip the spa and yoga pavilion, tucked behind curtained pergolas. A deep-tissue massage after a day of sun is pretty unmissable. The hotel map is impressive—the small, gravel-paved paths are set out and named after spices to help you navigate around. The plants are so spectacular you can't really tell how close you are to another room. And anything you’d change? The rooms may have felt hidden behind deep gardens, but they did very little to block sound—things can get a little noisy at night. Worth it—and why? There is nothing else like this on Zanzibar, and shaving off six or so hours of travel time after a hot few days on the African plains is nothing to sneeze at." - Paulie Dibner

The Best New Hotels in the World: 2019 Hot List

"Safari in Uganda and Rwanda has taken off these past few years. East Africa needs a place where travelers can pull off the old bush-to-beach after gorilla-trekking that's on the level of the One and Only by Virunga, and closer than the hideaways of the Seychelles. With Zuri, guests can be atop those sugary sands within two hours of leaving the jungle. This breezy resort is delightfully tropical, even if its profusion of banana palms feels similar to the overgrowth guests would have been scrambling through earlier, to spy on silverbacks. Those who've been to this ancient island will know the second they step out from the open air lobby onto the tiered terraces, overlooking thatched roof yoga pavilions down to the cerulean blue, that this is a game changer. Unlike the fusty ’70s retreats that still serve bad prosecco in swim-up bars nearby, Zuri is incredibly considered. A web of pathways weave through the dense bush, cutting past spice gardens (the source of that lingering vanilla and cumin scent) to the 55 standalone bungalows with outdoor showers of stone and bamboo walls. The indoor/outdoor vibes of the place extends to the dining room, where a selection of featherlight, hand-woven basket and cocoon-like lamps hanging over the tables are designed to catch the breeze off the Indian Ocean, in a sway as gentle and constant as the roll of the waves visible from the table. Zuri instantly makes Zanzibar a bush-to-beach option to rival the level of Mozambique and the Seychelles. FLASH POINT Book a western facing Garden Bungalow to catch the African sunset from the comfort of day loungers on the terrace. +420 226-202-981, zurizanzibar.com; doubles from about $410." - CNT Editors

Just got back from Zuri Zanzibar and overall had a great time ! The resort is absolutely stunning — the beach is picture perfect, couldn’t ask for better. Staff is super kind and helpful, and the people in Zanzibar in general are just amazing.||Huge huge huge shoutout to Beral, the head chef — he’s incredible and truly gifted. Some of the best Indian food I’ve ever had. Fresh seafood, great cocktails, food across the resort was consistently solid.||That said, there’s definitely a few things that could be improved. It feels like the place is trying to be luxury but not quite there yet. Little things like the toilet paper in the public restrooms only giving you two squares at a time, or signs around “complimentary” items and tipping that just felt off at this price point — felt more nickel-and-dimey than it should.||The gym needs a full redo. Most of the stuff is rusted out and not really usable — same goes for bikes and lockers around the property. It’s not “rustic,” it’s just kind of beat up and unsafe in places.||Also, the pool was closed for half our stay (maintenance) and we weren’t told in advance. They upgraded us which was appreciated, but we moved flights half a day to stay a little longer given pool wasn’t opened half our stay and were still charged for the half day rate — just didn’t feel great given the pool issue. Again, not about the money, more the principal.||One heads up: the rooms are really dark. It’s part of the treehouse vibe and by design, but just be ready for that.||Turndown service was pretty minimal too — kind of expected more for the price.||All in all, the location and people are fantastic. Would love to see the resort clean up some of these small things — it’s really close to being something special.

Wow! What a place. (Sorry not sorry for the long review) From the minute you enter the gates you are in a serene sanctuary right on the Indian Ocean. From the open air reception area with the eclectic furniture, great selection of books, dvds and pool table. The check in was quick and informative. Then the room, we had a Jacuzzi Suite (Hibiscus 14) and it was stunning, large lounge with beautiful decor, high ceiling, 2 sofas large coffee table tv, dvd, wine chiller, coffee machine, kettle and French press. This lead out to a very large, private terrace with table for 4 and seats all surrounded by lush plants. There are 2 wardrobes with enough hangers, safe and beach bag. Large bedroom, very very comfortable bed with over bed aircon (I want this in my home). Then we had the 2nd terrace with hammock thatched to the garden and jacuzzi, again very private. Bathroom with double vanity, bath, indoor and outdoor shower and the nice touch of closed off toilet. Lots of amenities and nice home made perfume/insect repellent. The grounds are beautiful as you go to the huge infinity pool and down to the amazing private beach with powder white sand. The restaurants and quality of food amazing, one buffet restaurant with changing themes every night, this is where breakfast is served and had a great selection as well as cold room for the fruits, cheeses and deserts, the other restaurant is al a carte and more intimate again food delicious with chefs specials. The beach bars and entertainment are great and the sundowners on the bean bags with a fire in the beach truly memorable. Special shout out to the saxophonist who played, he’s amazing and creates such a vibe. The service is impeccable and the staff are amazing and so helpful, nothing is too much trouble. I must call out our butler Peter (supported by Eric), he went out of his way to make sure everything was great, he was always available and even made suggestions for us. This place is beautiful and a great place to come after a full on safari, i would highly recommend and can’t wait to come back.

Zuri exceeded our expectations in so many ways on our recent trip. From the moment we stepped feet in the property, we were welcomed as valued guests by every single one of the staff we encountered. There was attention to detail in each interaction. Rukia was the first member of staff to greet us (by name). We knew within a matter of seconds that we had made the right decision in choosing this hotel, essentially due to the welcome she gave. The resort is nothing short of paradise, and there is not one aspect we would have changed about our stay... The food, the restaurants, the beach, the beautiful hotel grounds, the spacious and luxurious rooms (and beautiful, comfortable beds), the level of cleanliness, the vibe and the energy of the entire resort, were all outstanding. The guests were all great, all seemed so happy - I think this brushed off from the staff. We really appreciated and enjoyed the varied and vast choice of activities available, mostly at no extra cost - we stayed in the resort for 9 nights and could have easily stayed for longer - we were in fact incredibly sad to be leaving when it came to our last day. Despite all of the above attributes of the physical hotel and resort, the people that work here are the reason we truly fell in love with Zuri. Each one of them was friendly, attentive, informative, inspiring - we are seasoned travellers and I cannot think of a hotel globally that rivals the level of unmatched service we received; from the garden staff, to the cleaning staff, to the Masaai working on the resort, to the management - every single member of the Zuri team plays their part in making this place exceptional, first class. We encountered so many people that made this such a happy trip, on a daily basis. Special mention goes to Jackline, Amina and Pia, who put a smile on our face daily at breakfast, with their excellent service, memorisation of our exact orders, and their wit and humour. On the beach, we became accustomed to speaking to Francis, Juma, and Ali (as well as a few other members of staff who we saw less frequently, like the excellent barman who made my daily Pina Colada - exceptional). I miss our daily, late morning coconuts - always fresh and cold. We loved the beach and this was a result of their care, great banter, and the huge efforts they made to make us feel looked after. Equally, Peter, Prince, Malik, and Ernest were the best dinner hosts, in Upendo and Maisha - each one superb at their individual role and dedicated to making everyone's time with them the best it could be - we also very much enjoyed speaking to all of the cooks and kitchen staff - each one of them was so happy to see us and made our meal times so special each night! Special shout to Sunday from Maisha and to one of the lead chefs in Upendo (who made sure I avoided nuts each night). Beral was the most professional, welcoming, and friendly sous chef we have encountered in all of our travels - showing genuine care for his guests and their enjoyment of the food that he and his wonderful team put on offer, greeting each table personally each night to gather feedback on what they could do better (nothing, in our opinion). Kelvin in the Pepino bar was great fun, we had several great evenings (and some special cocktails) in his company - what a great guy - we wish him the best wedding later in the year and miss his drinks! Amnala at the front desk was helpful to the highest degree when we needed anything, and such a friendly face, alongside Rukia, and the rest of the reception team, all equally amazing. Mohammad's spice tour was superb - and I learned so much in the hour I spent with him - one piece of advice is do the tour and take note of the words of wisdom he offers - one of my favourite parts of the trip. Last but by no means least is Eric... Ever present, this gentleman could not do enough for us, and many other guests in his care. The utmost professional, incredibly personable, extremely knowledgeable, funny, a huge football fan :-), but most importantly, a credit to Zuri, and someone we count as a friend (having only known him for over a week)... We miss him very much and thank him for helping make our stay an incredibly memorable one - he will always hold a special place in our hearts! In fact, we miss this paradise and will remember it fondly. We tend to travel to new places each year, new countries, to have new experiences - this is one hotel that will buck the trend - we will be back one day, and hope Zuri retains the magic that made our stay so special! If you are considering this hotel - or weighing up whether it is worth the price, don't hesitate - the only regret you will have is not staying for long enough!

We loved our bungalow tucked away in the Zuri's lush garden, from the deign to the amazing deck with hammock and outdoor shower. The beach is also one of the island best for swimming which is what brought us there in the first place. Paradise! I would avoid on Full Moon unless you love to party!

This is our second time staying at this hotel, and it’s the only one so far that has made us want to return. In my opinion, it has the best beach in Zanzibar — peaceful, beautifully close to the water, surrounded by palm trees, and completely relaxing. What makes it even better is that it’s away from the areas where locals constantly try to sell you something, so you can truly unwind. The rooms are incredibly comfortable, and the bed guarantees a perfect night’s sleep during your holiday. Every evening, there’s a magical sunset celebration with a bonfire and different programs that create unforgettable memories. The staff is extremely polite and always focused on making you feel pampered. To me, this is one of the best hotels in the world and should be on every traveler’s wishlist. For sure will come back here every time will return to Zanzibar.

Our entire stay at Zuri was absolutely amazing. The resort itself is a paradise—I travel a lot, but I have never experienced such a breathtaking environment. The staff was incredible—friendly, always smiling, and endlessly helpful. They truly took wonderful care of us. The services were exactly what you would expect from a 5-star luxury resort! The food in all three restaurants was simply perfect.||I read some previous negative reviews, but based on our experience, they do not reflect reality at all.||A huge thank you once again—we will definitely be coming back!
