On the Grid : Zwack Museum

"Located in the Zwack factory, this museum introduces visitors to the history of the Zwack family and their famous invention: Unicum, a bitter liqueur, produced since 1790. When registering in advance, you may also visit the old distillery. And yes, you can buy a bottle of Unicum. Or two." - Budapest Design Week

38 Museums Devoted Entirely to Food, From the Delicious to the Disgusting

"Sometimes referred to as the Hungarian national spirit, the Zwack family’s signature liquor, Unicum is over two centuries old and the history of this wince-inducing tipple is on display alongside Central Europe’s largest collection of mini alcohol bottles right in the Zwack distillery. Unicum was originally invented in the late 1700s by King of Hungary Joseph II’s royal physician, Doctor Zwack. The super secret recipe which famously contains more than 40 different herbs was passed through the family line, becoming an unofficial national drink. Even when the family was exiled under Communist rule, the recipe was given to a confidant so that the drink could continue to be produced until the Zwacks could return, which they eventually did, founding the large distillery that stands today. The drink itself, a thick digestive, is known to be an acquired taste due to its (generously described) hearty flavor. Its bottle shape which is not unlike that of a cartoon wizard’s potion bottle, is yet another of the drink’s distinctive features.   Inside of the museum located on the distillery grounds there is a video telling the story of the Zwack family and a tour through the history of the drink. Along the way the gallery walls are covered in display cases filled with a massive collection of mini liquor bottles numbering over 17,000, making it the largest collection in Central Europe. The tour finishes out in the basement where bold tasters can sample the varieties of Unicum straight from the oak barrels in which they are still aged for half a year. Unicum is no longer sold straight in the United States, instead a watered-down version simply called, Zwack is the only version imported. Whether this is because Americans can’t handle the ultra-bitter medicinal taste or just because Hungary is simply protective of their beloved aperitif is not explained during the tour." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We didn’t know in advance that the museum visit included a guided tour. When we arrived, the English tour had just started so we were able to join in right on time. The tour began with an extensive introduction video. Unfortunately, the subtitles weren’t fully in sync with the video, which made it a bit difficult to follow at times. After that, we headed down to the cellars where we were given detailed information about the liqueur. We got to taste five different varieties, we liked the orange and coffee flavors the most. After the tour, we were free to explore the small museum on our own. Big compliments to the tour guide, he was very friendly and patient!

An interesting place where I learned a lot about Unicum – a unique Hungarian herbal drink I had never heard of before. I tasted it (not really to my liking!), but the museum and short film were excellent. Very informative and well presented. There’s also a big shop at the end. Definitely worth seeing if you’re curious about Hungarian culture and history!

Good to hear about the history of Unicum and how it contributed to the Hungarian history. Loved the tasting sesson. Unicum Barista and Plum are my Favourites 😁

At first we thought that there is not much to see and as was wrong! This was an impressive museum, lot's of things to see, history, related, how the business expanded, old products, new products, how war influenced things, this was like an encyclopedia and history museum.

Recommend booking a tour at this historic museum to learn about the Unicum story and history! They offer a regular tour and a premium tour and as of this writing in March 2025 both tours offer a visit to the cellar. The only difference is that the premium tour allows two more additional tastings of the Reserva and Barista versions of Unicum. The regular tour offers the tastings of the original Unicum and Szilva. It’s really neat to taste straight from the barrel as it is pre-filtered so it’s a bit stronger and even more herbal. Story summary: Zwack Unicum is a liqueur distilled from over forty herbs from all over the world. It was invented in 1790 by one of the family's ancestors, Doctor Zwack, royal physician to the Austro Hungarian Emperor, "Das ist ein Unikum!" Joseph II is said to have declared, thus giving this herb liqueur in its distinctive round bottle its name. The Zwack Company was founded in 1840 by Josef Zwack and in 1892 moved to its present headquarters on the banks of the Danube in Budapest. Apart from a 45 year hiatus during the Communist regime, the Company has been in family hands ever since. The fifth generation heir, Peter Zwack, returned to Hungary in 1988 and together with his partner, the Underberg family, repurchased the factory and the operations continue.

A great insight into the liquor and the family history. We basically had a private tour of the place due to being the only English speakers booked on at the time. Highly recommend the tour, lots of history in this brand. Kind and friendly knowledgeable staff. A great morning was had.
