There are positives and negatives for this hostel. We were picked up at the airport by someone from the hostel, but then we had to wait for the other guests to arrive. It wasn't too long before we were on our way. We were driven on a little tour around town and then back to the hostel which is just a few blocks from the airport and town. The tour gives you an orientation of Hanga Roa. The hostel has lots of porch/terrace space with tables and chairs. The open areas have a roof, so it is a nice place to sit even if it is raining. There is a nice view from the terrace. Be sure to bring some insect repellant if you are going to enjoy the outdoor space. The rooms open from the porches, so you get noise from the porches. The rooms are not air conditioned, and many of the window screens have gaps. ....insect repellent. There is a lot of variation between rooms. Our room needed a paint job. In our room there were 2 single beds. The 4-inch foam mattresses rested on wooden slats. They were very uncomfortable. We stacked both mattresses on one bed and slept together in a single bed. Some of the other guests said that had regular mattresses, but one guest said that a spring was poking through his mattress. Lay down on the bed you are assigned before you accept your room. Ask to move rooms if you get in one of these situations. There are lots of free-range chickens and dogs in Hanga Roa. There is little traffic noise, but crowing roosters and barking dogs may wake you up in the night. You could hear them all over town, so I'm not sure you could get away from them. The bathrooms and showers were not clean. There was lots of mildew and mold in the showers. ...flip-flops. The hot water was an off and on occurrence. The breakfast was instant coffee, hot tea, a couple of breads and fruit. They served a slice of melon while we were there. The wifi worked near the breakfast room, but not in the guest rooms. The manager's English is ok, but not great. He was very friendly and tried to be helpful. The help don't speak any English. Sometimes it is impossible to find anyone who works there. The kitchen is small and has limited facilities. There is a small refrigerator and a cooktop that you light with a match. We did not use the kitchen, but other guests said that there was not enough supplies. One guy said they only had two pots for cooking. I tried to wash out a cup in the kitchen, and could not get any hot water. The hostel is close to town and a short walk to restaurants, shops and car rental. They take you back to the airport at the end of your stay. It is reasonably priced considering the other options in Hanga Roa. We have stayed at HI hostels throughout the world. This is the most basic facilities we have ever experienced. If you consider that you are on a tropical island thousands of miles from other places, it helps you understand the condition of the facilities. It is bearable for a few days, and the sights on the island make it worth the effort. Just consider it an adventure and enjoy meeting the other people who are staying there.

I had a fantastic time here. The rooms were reasonably spacious, clean and fairly good value considering. The owners were very friendly and helpful, and took me to and from the airport at no extra cost. The place is in a quiet country lane and there is a good view from the patio area. It's a shortish walk to the shops and restaurants. Nice place with breakfast.

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights. ||||We booked at the airport and received a complimentary shuttle service there and back (the drive is less than 5 minutes). ||||Location is very central - 3 minute walk to the high street and 5 to the beach. ||||Room is basic, as is bathroom - shabby, tatty, but perfectly adequate with hot shower and clean towels. Our largest concern, is the morning noise from all the cockerels and dogs. Throughout the evening and from 4am onwards, you will need earplugs. ||||Breakfast is included in the price and varies day to day. We ate everything from dulce leche pancakes to traditional stone cakes with jam - really delicious and thoughtfully prepared.||||Wifi is free, though fairly slow - but still by far the best we found on the island. ||||The family are very hospitable, location great and price very affordable. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone else, trying to make their budget spread a little further.

I stayed in Kona Tau for about 5 nights this January and had a lovely time. It's reasonably priced considering how expensive the island is and the staff are very friendly and were able to answer all of my queries. I met a lot of nice people there. The location is very central, less than 5 minutes from the main street and my room was clean and cool. The only downsides were that the wifi is only in the common area and the adjacent family home keeps chickens and cockerels who make the most god-awful racket...especially early in the morning.

A great hostel located near the airport. The manager Mau is a wealth of information on the island. She'll pick you up from the airport and drop you off for your flight. Rooms are cleaned daily basis. Tours of the island can be easily arranged from the hostel. The cleaning lady doesn't speak any english but is very sweet. |The only shortcoming to this hostel is a minor one. The breakfast is the standard fare of bread, jam and fruit. Not a deal breaker. I would definitely stay here again.

The owners and their family are very kind and welcoming, and we enjoyed sharing moments with them! Unfortunatelly, despite daily room keeping, the cleanliness is insufficient. The bed linen was very humid and even molded.|The kitchen was equiped but could do with serious cleaning. Breakfast was minimal but alright.

Overall my experience at Kona Tau hostel was mixed, the place itself is nice, but the owners tried to screw people over on the bill, so I´ll list positives and negatives:||||Positive: ||Breakfast is good and a large portion, its bread with butter and jam, some pastry, fruit, juice and tea. The people staying at the hostel were great, it was a lot of fun. The cleaning lady is very friendly and very helpful. The garden is lush and beautiful.||||Negative: ||Almost everyone of the people staying there was screwed over the bill. Sometime it worked, sometime it didn´t. My invoice completely neglected the deposit payment I made upon reservation. A friend got charged one night too many. Another one got an extra charge for having towels replaced by the middle of the week. People paying in Dollars got charged a really bad exchange rate. And so on… Overall it does not give you a good impression and is just unacceptable, as the place is really pricey anyways for the basic accommodation. Moreover the owner gets really annoyed with anyone pointing out that her calculation is wrong.||||It is quite a walk to the center of the town, don´t be fooled, Hanga Roa is bigger than it seems. ||||They also keep chicken at the hostel and the roosters start crowing around 4am in the morning. I know it is normal for people in Hanga Roa to have chicken, but maybe if you run a hostel, you should not keep roosters…||||At around 10:30-11pm, kitchen and eating area are closed down for breakfast preparations. Either you go out or you go to sleep after that hour there is no more sitting and chatting.||||We had to wait a long time for transfer from the airport (last tourists around) and for the return flight, the pick up time for transfer was 11am, although the flight did not leave until 2:10pm (moreover it’s a national flight to Santiago, so going 1h in advance was totally fine). We refused to go 3h early to the airport (5min away) and had to pay for a taxi.||||To sum up, I would not go there again there is plenty of other accommodation in Hanga Roa for that price, with hopefully honest owners!

Awesome little hostel, the staff were great and let us know lots about the island. They also sorted a hire car for us which was really handy. Nice size rooms and good breakfast too.
