The exterior is Qing-era alteration, nothing like what it looked like historically. But if you pay the extra 10 RMB to go up, you get to see a ton of Song-era carvings and Ming frescoes. Great views, but as is common in China, it's difficult to appreciate because everyone is just there to do photo shoots. If you hike up the extensive hillside park within the complex, there are a lot of scale models of other historic Chinese pagodas (and even one minaret).
